2 2 Comet Courier Andrews, Davis, repeat as County champs! Shaina Andrews and Jon Davis repeated as Vermilion County cross country champions, putting Comets on top of the County for the third straight year. Andrews, a junior, ran a personal best on the Kickapoo course and finished in 21:29. She was followed by two other Comet All-County runners freshmen Autumn Laski (3rd) and Josalyn Smith (9th). Davis, a junior, cruised around the course in 16:59 and retained his County crown for his third straight year. He will have the opportunity next year to become only the second person to win the County all four years in high school. Sophomore Lucas Vasquez also earned All-County honors as he finished in third place. Andrews, Davis, and Vasquez also qualified for the Sectional meet which will be held on November 1. OHS to host financial aid night in library On Wed., Nov. 5 OHS will be hosting a Financial Aid Night from 6-7 p.m. in the library. Everyone in Wonderland, including the Queen (Jazmine Rodriguez), is turning into a zombie. As they investigate, Alice (Annie Machin) and her friends, discover Oz s Wicked Witch (Savana Barabas) of the West casting spells. Comet Classic returns for 28th year This year is the 28th year of the Comet Classic Girls Basketball tournament, The tournament was started by former coach Mike Waters who started with six teams. Former coach Rick Bough expanded the number of teams to its current format of 10 after Westville cancelled their Thanksgiving tournament. Not only is this a great tournament to watch and participate in but it has been complimented by almost every school and referee to have one of the best hospitality rooms of any tournament in the area, and this is the work of our own Juice (Lynn Anderson) who has cooked and organized for many years. The last few years the teams that participate have changed some. Last year. we introduced Paris and Salt Fork as newcomers and the championship game of Paris (who brought their own radio station to broadcast their games) and Shiloh turned out to be one of the best attended games we have seen. Shiloh won the tournament for the second year in a row. This year, Salt Fork has dropped out, so we bring two new teams to the tournament, Judah and Tri-County (coop of Kansas, Oakland, Shiloh). Blue Ridge, Chrisman, Georgetown-Ridge Farm, Hoopeston Area, Paris, Westville, and Uni High will join the host Comets. Engage Educate Empower
4 FFA Notes Land Use team take 1st place The Oakwood FFA Chapter's Land Use CDE team competed in the Section 18 CDE on Thursday, October 23. During the Land Use CDE, competitors judge soil characteristics to determine the best use for the land in relation to crop rotation, tillage requirements, and building needs. The team placed first overall, and many students placing in the Top Ten Individuals. The Basic Ag Science class, which has been studying soils, made up the team. Members included: Kyle Bott (3rd place), Josh Bartlow (5th place), Kamron Jackson (9th place), Damen Lane (10th place), Chelsey House, Dylan McConkey, Blake Vinson, and Lukas Wright. The Oakwood FFA Chapter would like to thank Bruce Musson for allowing the use of fields, and Rick Townsley for digging the soil pits. FFA will be selling popcorn The Oakwood FFA Chapter will begin selling popcorn and poinsettias on Mon., Nov. 3. The popcorn is coming from Not Just Popcorn in Edinburgh, Ind. Flavors are: Chicago Cheddar, Cara m e l, Chicago M i x ( C h i - c a g o Cheddar & Caram e l ), Red Velvet with C r e a m Cheese Frosting, Dill Pickle, Hot Wings, and Bacon & Cheddar. Two sizes are offered: large (approximately 1 pound), $10; and small (approximately 1/2 pound), $5. Poinsettias come in a 6 1/2 pot with a foil cover. Colors are: Premium Red, Premium White, Premium Ice Crystal, Cortez Burgundy, O r a n g e Spice, and S o n o r a W h i t e G l i t t e r (red with w h i t e s p o t s ). They are $10 each. Contact an FFA member or Mrs. Nekolny if you are interested in supporting the FFA Chapter through this fundraiser. Students learn about Ag safety The Oakwood FFA Chapter spent October 17 teaching the students of Oakwood Grade School all about agricultural safety. Younger students enjoyed the petting zoo, where they learned animal safety and awareness. Students were able to get up close and personal with animals including a llama, horse, goats, and chickens. Older students participated in mini workshops put on by the FFA and Oakwood Ambulance. Workshops included Grain safety, Water safety, ATV safety, Halloween safety, Chemical safety, and Tractor safety. The goal of this event is to allow the FFA members to share their knowledge of agriculture safety to younger students in order to prevent accidents before they happen. Congrats! Congratulations to James Morse, winner of this fall s Oakwood FFA Hog Raffle. Thank you to Shepherd Farms and Allen s Farm Quality Meats for donating the hog and processing.
