In the front row are Abby Foster, Sadie Edwards, Preslie Fletcher, Delaney Durst, Amelia Burke, Brittany Hargrove, Madison Denhart, Matte Wangler, Lacey Clark, and Miriah Carnahan. In the back row are Austin Green, Lane Bennett, Tristan Cox, Liam White, James Cornett, Kyle Girton, and Jeremy Watson. Art students travel to Indy The OHS Art Students will be going to the Indianapolis Art Museum on Tues., April 15. This is an annual trip to allow the students a first-hand look at famous art work that has been talked about and studied through-out the year. The students will leave at 7 a.m. and return by the end of 7th hour. This year there are special exhibits by two unique artists. Julianne Swartz, an American sculptor, has an interactive installation titled How Deep? and Camboian artist Sopheap Pich has an installation titled A Room which consists of about 1,200 strips of real and artificial bamboo that is over 40-foot tall and creates a space about 26 feet in diameter. This is along with the permanent exhibits that the students have come to enjoy over the past few years. About 35 art students will travel to the museum.
2 2 Comet Courier OHS Post Prom committee to host scrapbooking day The OHS Post Prom Committee will be hosting a scrapbooking day on Sat., April 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the OHS cafeteria. The cost to participate in this event is $10 per person, with all proceeds benefitting the 2014 Post Prom event. All crafters, including scrapbookers, stampers, paper crafts and more are welcome. We supply table space to work on and some tools. You bring your own pictures, supplies and creativity. Nicole Lee, a Stampin Up demonstrator, will be there. She will do a make and take project if there is interest. PSAE Plans Juniors all around the state of Illinois, including OHS, will be taking the PSAE test on April 23 and 24. We encourage all the juniors to get a good night s rest and have a healthy breakfast before taking the test. The tests will begin around 8:15 and will last to around noon both days. Juniors MAY be allowed to leave the school following the tests on both days. Because the senior class met AYP last year, the seniors will be excused from school on Wed., April 23 as a reward. They will run a regular schedule, including College Express, on April 24. The freshmen and sophomores will run a regular schedule on both days although we will operate without bells and without using the Junior-Senior Hallway. We will hope to run the school that day with a minimum of interruptions so that our juniors can do well on their tests. Good luck to the Class of 2015! This will be a great opportunity for parents of seniors to work on scrapbooks for graduation parties and for all crafters to gather with others and indulge in a fun day of creativity. Participants may choose to stay for the entire event or come and go. Light snacks and drinks will be provided or you may bring your own. You may find an event page on Facebook by searching for OHS Post Prom Scrapbooking Day. For more information, or if you are a vendor and would like to sell products at this event, please contact LuAnn Grimm at (217) To register, please mail payment (checks made payable to OHS Post Prom) by April 7, to: LuAnn Grimm Newtown Road Oakwood, IL Guidance Corner Information about the ACT The ACT is given six times a year. Although the state of Illinois requires public school juniors to take the test as part of the Prairie State Achievement Exam, anyone can take the test. Many students take the test multiple times. Scores are used for college admissions, college course placement and scholarships. The NCAA requires scores be sent to them for potential Division I and Division II college athletes. The NCAA Eligibility Center code is Cost of testing is $36.50 (no writing) or $52.50 (writing). Juniors testing as part of the PSAE will take it at no cost. The last test of the school year is June 14. Register before May 9 to avoid a late fee. Next year s test dates can be found on the ACT website. You may register online at
3 3 VVC Art Show tomorrow The Vermilion Valley Conference Art Show and Competition is being hosted this year by Westville High School. It will be held on Sat., April 5 and will be open to the public from noon until 3 p.m. The winners will be acknowledged at 3 p.m. for Best Of Show, Best Technical Skill and Best Design 2D and 3D. There are 45 categories awarding 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention for each category. The VVC Show will have work from all 10 schools in the VVC and will be judged by area artists. The show has been a spring event since the formation of the conference. OHS Art students from all levels will have work on display prepared for judging. OHS has dominated this show for many years, taking over half of the ribbons given and two of the four medals. The Art Students will be taking a bus to the show on April 5 and will stop at Monicals for pizza before going to the show. Engage Comet Courier Students honored for improvement The OHS has started a new tradition every quarter to recognize improvement in specific students. On March 13, students were recognized with a breakfast. These students were nominated by teachers who saw the student improve in the classroom during the third quarter. The students who were honored were Jessica Alpers, Dakota Bartlett, Coltin Buckley, Greyson Carpenter, Lexi Clark, Arian Dodge, Jared Goetzelman, Mason Harding-Brown, Rylan Harrison, Lukas Hoshauer, Darian Hoskins, Thomas Hundley, Cherokee Jackson, Nick Leonard, Shane Moll, Kinzie Sullivan, Brock Wendell, Kahlon White, and R.J. Wyer. The OHS French 3-4 students recently completed a unit on the environment. Students learned in the target language about what countries and organizations in America and Europe are trying to do to prevent waste, and studied different way companies and non-profits are fighting the water crisis in Africa. For this unit, students participated in the Google Doodle contest with this year s theme of If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place. Senior Honors Night OHS will host its annual Honors Night for graduating seniors at 6 p.m. on Tues., May 13 in the gym. Seniors will receive scholarships and be honored for athletics, academics, and attendance. It is a special night for the seniors, so please put it on your calendars. French students use Google to study environment The student s google doodle ideas varied from cars that could run on food waste, domes that could be placed over houses to filter out chemicals in the air, and water purifiers that could create water from the chemicals in the air. A few students have decided to submit their doodle into the Google competition. Good Luck students! Encourage Educate Empower

The tryouts will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. each of those nights. The tryouts will be for the 2014 football cheerleading squad as well as the basketball and competitive squad. An informational meeting about the squad and tryouts was held on March 31. All interested candidates and a parent or guardian should have been at that meeting. If you have questions Green ready for WYSE State No School -- Friday, April 18 about the team, you can contact Coach Kacie Wilson at kjwilson5@gmail. com. Davis takes indoor State title in 1600m Sophomore Jon Davis ran in the prestigious Illinois Prep top times meet at Illinois Wesleyan University on Fri., March 28. This is considered the Indoor State Championships and only the top times in the state get invited to participate in the meet. Jon ran a 4:28.93 in the 1600m and finished first. He was ranked 4th out of 15 runners entering the race. His previous best in the indoor mile was 4:32.5. Jon ran a very good race and out kicked rival Nick Hess of St. Thomas More the last 100 meters. This is Jon s first Indoor State Championship. Jon was very excited after the race but he felt he could have posted a faster time. Heading into the outdoor season, Coach Black has very high expectations for Jon. He thinks Jon will be able to compete for a State championship in not only the 1600m but the 3200m as well. Senior Hailey Bennett also competed at the meet in the 60m hurdles, finishing in 11th place. Congratulations to both! Junior Austin Green will advance to the WYSE State competition for Computer Science on Mon., April 7 at the I Hotel in Champaign. Green took first place in the EIU Sectional competition, after finishing third in the Regional. Good luck, Austin!
