October was a busy month for Comet athletics with lots of successes to celebrate. At top, the volleyball team won the Vermilion County title for the second year in a row in front of a supportive home crowd. At left, junior Brandon Rowe is shown with his 5th place medal from IHSA State golf, the highest finish in school history. For information about the cross country team, look on page 4.

2 2 Comet Courier FFA attends National Convention in Louisville Seven members of the OHS FFA organization attended the National FFA Convention in Louisville, KY, on October The seven that attended are Josh Bartlow, Mackenzie Bartlow, Kira Conklin, Noah Ruch, Blake Shelton, Cameron Wise, and Emily Wise. The FFA Greenhand officers were recently chosen and they are: President - Mackenzie Bartlow VP - Rachel Cyphers Secretary - Jericho Anders Treasurer - Dalton Stimac Reporter - Kenzie Mowery Sentinel - Zach Beld Historian - Gage Thomas Parliamentarian - Evan Frerichs Social worker -- same face, different name I wanted to let everyone know that my name has now changed from Ms. Mitchell to Ms. Esteves. I am at OHS Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and spend Tuesday at OJHS. My is mitchell-estevesa@oakwood76.org. I can help with counseling, agency referrals, special education information and social/emotional issues. I will be uploading a website link on my teacher page very soon that will contain hotline numbers, as well as agency contact information within the surrounding areas. Please feel free to contact me by phone, or in person. Halloween 5K for Post Prom is tomorrow Help support the Oakwood Post Prom Committee by joining them for a Halloween Boo 5K walk/run that will start at Oakwood Grade School on Oct. 31 at 8 a.m. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. Registrations will be taken up to race time but you will not receive a T-shirt if signed up after October 16. Thank you for supporting Post Prom as it provides a safe drug and alcohol free environment for the students after Prom. No School -- November 11 Veterans Day

Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Come and mingle with the cast from Sleepy Hollow. The ghosts from Sleepy Hollow will be there, too. The menu for the evening will be salad, spaghetti, breadsticks, h o m e m a d e desserts, and your choice of lemonade, tea, coffee or water. Ticket reservation prices for dinner are: Adults $7 -- ($8 at the door) Students (1st thru 12th grade)$5 -- ($6 at the door) Children under the Age of 6 - Free Tickets for the show can be purchased at the door before every performance Adults - $5 Students and seniors - $3 Children under the age of 6 Free Please make your dinner reservations by November 5 to receive $1 off your meal ticket. 4 4 Comet Courier Sectional qualifiers! Cross country team competes in Sectional The Comet cross country team is wrapping up a successful season with the Sectional meet tomorrow and the State meet next weekend. For the first time in three years, the entire boys team qualified for the Sectional meet. Senior Shaina Andrews also qualified for the Sectional as an individual. Jon Davis won the Regional The Sectional meet will begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Forsyth. Below, five cross country runners were named All- Vermilion County and All-Vermilion Valley Conference. From left, they are Lucas Vasquez, Shaina Andrews, Jon Davis, Josalynn Smith, and Cameron Helka. Helka earned the award as the County s best freshman and Davis was the County champion. All-County! If so, we have the event for you. On Thu., Nov. 5 OHS will be hosting a Financial Aid Night from 6-7 p.m. in the library. Representatives from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission will explain the financial aid application process to senior parents and/or students. What is the difference between a scholarship and a grant? What are subsidized and unsubsidized loans? What is an Estimated Family Contribution and how does that impact financial aid for college? 5 5 Comet Courier Comet Madness coming The boys basketball team will be hosting Comet Madness at 6 p.m. on November 13 in the OHS gym. The evening will include introductions and a preview of the winter athletic teams. The wrestlers, cheerleaders, Comettes, and girls basketball teams will be introduced. Both of the basketball teams will hold a scrimmage that night. Admission price will be $2 per student and $3 per adult. No passes will be accepted. The schedule for the evening is: 6:00 -- Wrestling Introductions 6:10 -- Comette Performance 6:20 -- Girls Basketball Scrimmage 7:00 -- Cheerleader Introductions 7:10 -- Boys Basketball Scrimmage Lending a hand! Seniors Austin McArty and Lee Mascari are prepared to lead the Comet boys basketball team this year. The boys and girls teams will hold a scrimmage on November 13. The OAP football team spent a recent Saturday morning at the VA in Danville helping out. Nearly 30 players were in attendance on that day. Herff Jones to be here Nov. 4 Herff Jones will be at OHS from 3 to 7 p.m. on November 4 for Graduation Order Night. This is when you can place your order for all graduation items. Caps and gowns will be delivered to the school at a later date. A deposit of $80 is required for all orders larger than $80. 6 6 Comet Courier Co-op program makes a successful return to OHS The Cooperative Education program is proud to announce it s return to Oakwood High School. Students now have the opportunity to venture out into the work force during the school day. Not only are they gaining real life experience, they are making real money! Money that they can use to help fund their current and future goals. Alongside their regular coursework for graduation, they also take a cooperative education class where they develop the skills they need for their current and future jobs, as well as how to budget and save for the things they need or may want in life. Honor Society collects socks National Honor Society is collecting socks to help the Danville Rescue Mission. They This program offers students the opportunity to explore their career interests now, rather than later. We have students employed at various business in the Vermilion County area. Some students are currently holding positions as bank tellers, carpenters, landscapers, child care workers, and graphic apparel technicians. If you are interested in possibly joining us this spring or the school year, contact the Cooperative Education Adviser, Mary Lovejoy, at lovejoym@oakwood76.org. Comet Classic basketball action returns to OHS are looking for new, or gently used, socks for men, women and children. The Sock Drive will run until November 13. If you have socks that you would like to donate, you can have your student bring them to the school and put them in the box outside the library. The Comet Classic girls basketball tournament will return to OHS this November for the 29th consecutive year. The tournament was started back in 1987 and has gone through a variety of formats over the years. The teams in the tournament continue to change and evolve, this year s teams are: Oakwood, Blue Ridge, Chrisman, Hoopeston Area, Georgetown- Ridge Farm, Judah Christian, Rantoul, Tri-County, University High, and Westville. 1:40 Dismissal on November 25 No School on November 26 and 27

7 2015 Oakwood High School Boo 5K Run/Walk 5K Run or Walk Oakwood Grade School EAST Parking Lot Saturday, October 31 th 8:00 a.m. Wear your halloween costume if you would like. $25 Entry Fee Register on Race Day starting at 7 a.m. Race Packet pickup at Oakwood Grade School on race day starting at 7:00 a.m. The race will begin and end in the EAST parking lot at Oakwood Grade School. You may register by completing an entry form and mailing it along with a check for $25 to the address listed below. Entry forms will be available at Oakwood Grade, Junior High, and High School or by contacting Amie at **You will be able to sign up on Race Day, but please note NO T shirts will be available with late sign ups.** Parking: Runners/Walkers: Parking will be available at the Oakwood Grade School on the south and west side. Volunteers: Volunteers will be allowed to park in the East parking lot of the school by the buses. Post Prom is an annual event that s after Prom and draws the Oakwood High School Junior and Senior students and their dates together for a safe, yet memorable experience by providing food, entertainment, games and prizes to them in a monitored environment. Post Prom is a drug & alcohol free event that is sponsored by the Junior & Senior Parents. Post Prom is paid for ONLY thru generous donations from our local businesses, fundraisers like this 5K Run/Walk and parents involvement.

9 OAKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Class of 2016 Graduate Important Facts Wednesday, November 4th 2015 is cap & gown and senior product Family Order Night from 3:00-7:00pm. Cap and Gown Rental Fee is $28.50 plus tax and handling Ordering Options. You can order by 1 of several convenient methods. In person during the above order dates. You may mail your orders with deposit to P.O. Box 532 Monticello, IL You can order over the phone by dialing or you can go online to and shop from the convenience of your home beginning November 5 th Pre Delivery: Place your order with Herff Jones during your schools scheduled order times and the following products will be pre delivered at the order table with your deposit: T-shirt, Hoodie, Sweat Pants, Tassel Frame, Premium and Senior Memory Albums, Memory Album Sticker Sheets, Jelly Wristbands, Spinner Key Chain, All Tassel Combinations, Senior Leather Bracelets, Tag Bracelets, Dog Tags and Heart Necklaces. Accepted Methods of Payment. Cash, Check, Money Order, Visa, Mastercard, Discover or American Express Announcement Quantity. The number of announcements that each senior will require varies from student to student and school to school. Your individual requirements will depend on the size of your family and the number of friends with which you wish to share this accomplishment. The Average is 50 per household. Payment Plan & Ordering with your Class. Ordering with your class on the main ordering day will assure you of worry-free delivery. By placing the order now, a convenient interest free payment plan may be used or use the web site to make payments. This allows you to reduce the balance by making small installments rather than paying the entire balance on February 1, Deposits: Any order under $80 needs to be paid in full at time of order. All orders over $80 dollars requires a minimum of an $80 dollar down payment Tax: The Sales Tax Rate for Oakwood High School is 7.5 % All orders must be paid in full on or before February Senior Packages. By far the most popular method of ordering graduation supplies is to select one of our packages. The Comets Package is the most popular package chosen by high school seniors across the country. Home Address Labels. The address that the student prints on the order form will be used for the return address labels. Changes in your address must be made to our office within 72 hours of the receipt of your original order. A charge will be incurred for corrections after the 72 hour period. On-time delivery of address labels that have to be reordered is not guaranteed. However, we will do everything possible to make the delivery of your order complete. Late Orders. This form is valid until January Effective February a late order program will be mailed out to all those who have yet to order. Cancellations. If the student does not participate in the graduation ceremony for any reason it is the student s responsibility to notify our office. The student must submit a letter of cancellation along with verification from the school stating that he/she did not or will not participate. Year dated products are not transferable from one year to another. If this order is cancelled after November 20th, 2015, the student will be held responsible for all personalized and pre-delivered items. If the student takes possession of the Senior Supply order and does not graduate, all items are non-refundable. The student has 2 weeks after the graduation date to request a possible refund. All refunds are processed after June 15 th and will be mailed to the student s home address no later than July 15 th. Some products are subject to availability. This order is subject to audit.
