The JROTC will be hosting a 5K Run/ Walk this Saturday October 29th! chosen for their excellent academic standing this year and swore in Thursday to uphold all the morals and value of Beta club. The National Beta Club is an academic honors club that requires students to go out into the community in order to better our world through volunteerism and compassion. Each year, the members collaborate to run service projects that will help benefit the community. Many times they even help with Senior Projects. We are proud to have these sixteen new members as part of this great organization and look forward to their work the next three years of their high school careers. Join me in congratulating our new Great Falls High Senior Beta Club cohort! Beta club will have their second meeting Thursday, November 3rd. This is a MANDATORY meeting. 2 October 28, Volume 2, Issue 10 Written By: Corey Roof Great Falls High October 28, 2016 The History of Halloween wasn t originally celebrated in the United States. It hasn't been called Halloween forever either. Halloween was originally a Celtic holiday in which the Celts celebrated Samhain which was the celebration of the spirits of the dead returning to Earth. On the Celtic calendar, November 1st was the start of their New Year so on October 31st they would celebrate the returning of the dead. With their return they brought damage to crops, cold weather, and it was even believed by the Celts that the presence of spirits could help the druids (priests) see into the future. Although the earliest form of Halloween was brought on by the Celts, England had a form of their own. Called All Souls Day In which the needy would beg for food and money and it would be given to them in return only for them praying for the deceased family of the giver. Eventually All Souls Day turned from adults to kids. The kids would go around the neighborhood from door to door for food, money, and drinks. The difference between Halloween now is that the spirits or ghosts are seen as malevolent or bad. For the Celts and England the spirits were seen as spirits of family and loved ones. People would set out candles and cakes for the spirits. The candles were set out so the spirits could find their way home. Now children dress up for Halloween. Shann Roberts said The most embarrassing character I have ever dressed up as was Peter Griffin from Family Guy. Luke Spires said I dressed up as Woody from Toy Story, which was embarrassing.

3 T H E D E V I L S D A I L Y S T O R Y B Y : C A M R Y N P A T T E R S O N G R E A T F A L L S H I G H Halloween treats Halloween treats in this edition: boo nanas dirt Halloween chocolate bark 3 quick fall treats for this Halloween How to make Halloween chocolate bark Ingredients: 6 miniature Kit Kats 1/2 cup of fall M&M's 1 cup of small pretzel 1/4 cup of nuts 2 cups of milk chocolate chips Steps: 1. Break the Kit Kats and pretzels into smaller pieces and set aside, 2. Melt the milk chocolate chips and spread on to a sheet pan lined with wax paper, 3. Spread the M&M's, pretzels, nuts and Kit Kats over the chocolate, 4. Place pan into the freezer for chocolate to harden, 5. Take pan out and break bark into pieces. Eat and share with friends. Boo nanas (banana) Ingredients: Bananas 1 cup of white chocolate Mini milk chocolate chips Popsicle sticks Steps: 1. Cut each banana in halves, then half the halves down the center, 2. Insert a popsicle stick into each banana then freeze, 3. When the bananas are frozen, melt the white chocolate chips in the microwave in 20 second increments, 4. Dip each banana into the melted chocolate, scrape the excess chocolate off, 5. Quickly add the miniature chocolate chips on to the bananas as you place them on the wax paper, 6. Place the bananas in the freezer to harden. Eat and enjoy. "Dirt" Volume 2, issue 10 October 28, 2016 Ingredients: 1 box of brownie mix (and the supplies for the brownies) Chocolate pudding cups (pack of 4) One bag of gummy worms Steps: 1. Make the brownies as the box follows, let cool and crumble full brownie pan into small pieces, 2. Get a bowl or cup and spoon half of the chocolate pudding into the container, 3. Put two gummy worms on top of the pudding, 4. Spoon the remaining pudding on top of the worms, 5. Place two more worms on top, 6. Put two heaping spoonful's of brownie on top. You now have "dirt" 4 10th grader, Sumer Hinson says, I like eating pumpkin pie, but I just don t ever get it until Thanksgiving. Breanna hunter, sophomore said, I know people eat pumpkin seeds, I don t like them though. Go home and try these quick and easy treats that will make your taste buds go crazy. 4 3 Fall Fashion Story By: Kayla Coleman-Great Falls High School-Photo and Editor-October Summer/Fall Mixup? Volume 2, Issue 10 Sandals and shorts are out, but boots and long pants are in. At Great Falls High school, the fall season has begun. However, the weather lately has been cold in the mornings and hot in the afternoons. Junior Artez Blackmon is seen wearing a jacket with jogging pants and slides. have been seen with jackets on and scarfs as well. Fall weather can be tricky. Here in South Carolina, it can be hot one day of the week and cold or chilly the next day. This is why it is best to prepare for any type of fall weather. For some students, this may be a problem because they can be unsure of what to wear. It could be cold in the mornings with temperatures around 50 degrees. Students may think to dress in long pants, long sleeved shirts, and boots. In the afternoon though, it warms up and can be up to 77 degrees. This is when students debate on what they should wear. Despite this abnormal weather, students are still choosing to wear fall clothes. Many students Camouflage has also been spotted in the hallways of the school being worn by students. Corey Roof, a senior here at Great Falls High School said, I think it is aggravating, because I wake up with jogging pants on and in the afternoon I m sweating. Her favorite food is macaroni and cheese because "who doesn't love mac and cheese?" She loves listening to emo music and describes it as "very entrancing." Her favorite musical artist is Troye Sivan and says his music just speaks to her. Her favorite school subject is English because "It's the only thing I'm good at." When she finish school, she would like to be lawyer or doctor because she loves helping people. Great job Charlee and way to stay on the devil level!! Jarrett Hinson is a golf and basketball loving sophomore at Great Falls High. His favorite food is chicken because "It's delicious." His favorite music genre is rap and his favorite musician is Futuristic because "he's a great rapper." His favorite subject in school is chorus and describes it as " not that difficult for me." When he grows up he wants to be golf instructor because he loves golf. Keep up being a RED HOT red devil Jarrett!

6 The Devils Daily Entertainment VOLUME 2 ISSUE 10 10/28/2016 Last Minute Halloween Costumes Published and Edited by : Hunter Litzenberg Great Falls High school 10/28/2016 Halloween is a fun time of the year for people of all ages. October is also a busy month, and can become overwhelming. Halloween is right around the corner. In this article, I will be talking about last minute Halloween costumes. There are several things you can do, but mostly you can make them from home or go to the store and pick up some cheap supplies. First is the classic Ghost with the white sheet. Just take an old white sheet and cut eye holes out. The Cereal Killer is a simple and funny way to show out for Halloween. For this one, you just need an empty box of cereal, and red paint or fake blood. Then you cut holes in the front of the box and put the paint or fake blood around the edges of the holes. Thing One and Thing Two from the cat and the hat is a classic last minute costume. You will need a red shirt, white paper, and some type of adhesive. Take the white paper, cut a circle out, and write Thing One and Two in the center of the circle. Then use the adhesive to attach to the shirt. The Copy Cat is another great pun costume. Take a white shirt and a thick black sharpie and write "Copy" on the shirt. Then use black face paint on your face to make whiskers and a cat like nose. Kylie Grant, junior at Great Falls High School, told me about a last minute costume she had used a couple years ago. "I was a zombie. I used make-up, I tore up a shirt, and frizzed up my hair." Breanna Burchett, also a junior at Great Falls high, wanted to share one of her last minute costumes. "My last minute costume was a nerd.
