1 THERAPEUTIC RECREATION NEWSLETTER O W A T O N N A P A R K A N D R E C R E A T I O N W E S T H I L L S C I R C L E O W A T O N N A M N Viewable on line: September/October 2017 Therapeutic Recreation News Recreation Supervisor Therapeutic Programs: Wendy Reller Dani Bakken, CTRS Night Club Staff: Teen Club Staff: Justin Thiessen LIFE Staff: Wendy Reller Leisure Swim Staff: Tim Schiltz Program Cancellations (Rec Office) Owatonna Bus Company On the Road Again... Wow! Time sure speeds up when retirement is on the horizon. I have mixed emotions about leaving the job I ve loved, like many people do. I look forward to having time for myself and doing whatever I choose, but I will really miss the job I ve had for over 20 years. I love the work itself, the planning, organizing, and the office work involved with managing adaptive recreation. But most of all, I love the people in our programs. I ve learned so much from so many who help to make our TR programs successful. The Park and Rec staff & TR staff over the years, people in the community I ve networked with, service providers, volunteers, parents, support staff and most of all, our program members. I ve been blessed to know all of you. I'm leaving the program in very capable hands. Dani Bakken will take my place. She has lots of energy, enthusiasm, and ideas for future programs. I m confident she ll be a great new Recreation Supervisor. Thanks for your support and kindness over the years. I'm sure I ll see you again when I come to volunteer! Wendy Reller Meet The New Staff: Meet Dani Bakken, our new Recreation Supervisor for Therapeutic Rec programs and Senior Place. Dani attended Winona State University and graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor s degree in Therapeutic Recreation. From there she pursued and obtained her Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist certification. After completing her schooling she moved to Albert Lea where she gained direct experience working as a Recreational Therapist before coming to the City of Owatonna. Dani currently lives in Albert Lea with her husband Corey and their dog Ivy. Dani and her husband enjoy taking their dog for walks and camping in their free time. They also stay very busy participating in numerous other activities with their family and friends. Dani looks forward to learning her position as Wendy moves on to enjoy her retirement. Dani can be reached at or danielle.bakken@ci.owatonna.mn.us. Meet Justin Thiessen, the new group lead for Teen Club! Justin is originally from Okoboji, Iowa, but has lived in Minnesota since 2005 when he moved to Minneapolis to work for Al Franken at Air America Radio. While in the Twin Cities he also worked for Senators Sharon Erickson Ropes, and Vicki Jensen at the MN State Legislature. Justin attended graduate school at Oregon State University and currently works for Rice County, in the Community Corrections Division. Justin Lives in Owatonna with his fiancé Anna, her daughter Emma, and their 2 dogs Olivia and Fiona. Justin has a passion for working with teens with disabilities and has experience in that area. His hobbies include hosting a 90 s themed internet radio show, playing Mario Kart with his stepdaughter and watching Seattle Seahawks football games.

2 TR Programs for Kids Inclusion Youth with disabilities or special health concerns are welcome and encouraged to participate in existing youth sports, aquatics, and seasonal programs. The inclusion policy of this program provides all children registered to participate with an equal advantage. Therefore, adaptive equipment, program modification, and other accommodations are considered to assist the individual as needed. Consultation with parents and coordination with the coach/instructor helps make the transition possible. In addition, all coaches, instructors, and summer staff receive a brief orientation to working with the child with disabilities in their training sessions. Requests for one on one assistance will be considered when available. Registration: When enrolling your child in sports and other youth programs we request that you indicate any special needs or health concerns your child may have. We must be aware of any condition that warrants medication or special attention from Parks and Recreation staff while your child is in our care. Information shared with staff is confidential. Leisure Swim This aquatic group is designed for kids with disabilities who would like an opportunity to swim or enjoy some weekly exercise in a supervised pool setting. We ask that the group be limited to 8 registrations, and that parents provide an assistant for their child if needed. Our swim staff for fall session is Tim Schiltz, qualified in water safety and experienced with the swimmer who has special needs. Tim is the local Special Olympics Aquatics Coach. He will provide group supervision and use games and water activities to help the kids develop socialization skills.
