The beginning of the year at GW has been a busy one! The PTA organized our Fall pictures and for the first time in several years were able to take photos outside. Our first PTA meeting was very well attended and many initiatives were outlined for the year. We are looking forward to offering parent workshops that will focus on instructional practice and at home supports to encourage academic success. Our Dad s Bring your Child to School breakfast, co-sponsored by the Youth Bureau and PTA was attended by over 200 families and was featured in the White Plains Patch. Thank you to all who played a role in making it such a huge success. I continue to be impressed with the commitment and support of the GW family. We certainly have the makings of a strong partnership. I am looking forward to our journey towards excellence. From the President's Desk The cooler weather is creeping up on us and so are two of our fantastic Fall events - the Fall Book Fair and Halloween Bash! Our Fall Book Fair kicks off on Monday, October 24th and is open for shopping during the school day as well as during Family Reading Night on the 25th and Halloween Bash on the 29th. Come stop in and shop with your children! Our Halloween Bash on the 29th will be a great family fun event with crafts, a magician, and "Trunk or Treating"! Be sure to watch backpack mail for information about both these October events. I hope you can join us! Sincerely, Deidre Kimble STUDENT DIRECTORY FORMS ARE OVERDUE!! If you would like to be included in the Student Directory, which provides names, classes, and phone numbers for all your GW friends, you must return the Student Directory form ASAP! 2 El Mensaje de Mungin Principal El Verano ha terminado oficialmente y estamos comenzando a sentir el friecito del Otoño. Cordialmente, Deidre Kimble The Fall Book Fair is Here! To the Book Fair and Beyond! Reading is Out of This World! is the theme of GW s Fall 2011 Scholastic Book Fair, to be held during the week of October 24th through October 29th. Get ready to blast off for a great week of out-ofthis-world books and giveaways as well as some great new surprises! No matter what planet you re from, we ve got your books!! Everything from the Milky Way and planets, to patriotic texts, the Bad Kitty series, pro wrestling, the 39 Clues series, Judy Moody and Fancy Nancy!! Waiting for the new Wimpy Kid book to arrive? Jeff Kinney s latest title, Cabin Fever, will be released on November 15 and Book Fair shoppers can get an exclusive opportunity to pre-order the book for delivery in November. Of course, we ll be taking prepaid orders for all books as usual, so no worries about our running out of your favorite titles before you get to shop. There will be a wide variety of space themed books, seasonal books, as well as other fiction and nonfiction titles for all reading levels! Go to to search for available titles before you hit the Fair!! There are endless shopping opportunities available this year. The fair will be open to teachers only on Monday, October 24th for Teacher Preview Day. Every teacher who attends the Preview on Monday, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, to complete their wish list, will get a $10 gift certificate, as well as entry into a raffle for $50 worth of books or other materials. The Fair hours for Tuesday October 25th through Friday October 28th will be 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. In addition to our regular scheduled class visits during the week, the Fair will be open during Family Reading Night on Tuesday, October 25th, from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Make sure to attend this fabulous event as our guest readers will feature books from the Fair. The Fair will also be open for business during the Halloween Bash on Saturday, October 29th, from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, so come and shop in costume! Completed teacher wish lists will be available during all of these events so please consider buying books for your child s classroom or specials teachers libraries. We will be holding the Fair on the stage in the auditorium again this year, which made for smooth traffic last year, as shoppers enter through one backstage door and exit through the other, via the adjacent hallways. Those of you who shopped with us last year experienced Scholastic s new electronic scanning cash register that really helped to speed up sales and provided printed receipts for Page 2 all purchasers, regardless of method of payment. The One for Books program will continue this year. Please keep an eye out for flyers and pledge slips coming home in backpacks the week before the fair. Your generous donations to this program allow the PTA to provide vouchers for books to children who may not otherwise be able to make a purchase and ensure that everyone gets the opportunity to bring home a new book that they love. Volunteers are needed to help make this event a success. Please make sure to fill out and return the flyers that are sent home, or check out the GWPTA website for a copy. Come be an intergalactic star and help make reading blast off for all of our shining GW stars! 4 DAD'S TAKE YOUR KIDS TO SCHOOL DAY On September 20th, GW was happy to welcome our dads, granddads, and other relatives and friends to Dad s Take Your Kids to School Day, which was organized by the White Plains Youth Bureau. GW had a great turnout for the event, with more than 200 students and their dads attending. Mrs. Mungin read What Daddies Do Best, by Laura Numeroff and asked the children to draw and write about what their own dads do best. Frank Williams, Executive Director of the White Plains Youth Bureau spoke to the attendees, as did Mayor Tom Roach and Dr. Chris Clouet, Superintendent of White Plains Schools. The message of the day was that dads and other male role models can help kids realize the importance of education by getting involved in their children s school. Page 4
