MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello Osceola Parents, February was an amazing month! We have experienced the joy of spending Family Math Night together, having college students, football players, coaches, community leaders, authors and others read to our students during the African American Read In, having Dr. McDonnell/Dr. Barnes come speak to our children about oral hygiene, integrating technology on Digital Learning Day, having nutrition education and many other awesome activities going on here. This month we will continue the great fun at Dr. Seuss Night with the Cat in the Hat himself! We are pleased to share this evening of celebration and book giveaways with all of our Osceola families! We will be selling food and drinks; Schmancy Pops (a kid owned company) will be sold too! March is also the dawn of testing, with our Writing Florida Standards Assessment beginning on the 1st. We will be providing complimentary breakfast from 7:30-7:55 for our students that day and will continue to do so throughout the entire Florida Standards Assessment. It s time to start thinking about middle school for our 5th graders. Fifth grade students will begin meeting with middle school staff to learn more about 6th grade this month, more information forth coming. This Spring Break, 03/18-03/27, I ask that all students take time to find a way to show kindness. Students finding ways to show others kindness helps them increase their self-esteem and confidence. Please plan opportunities for your family to show kindness together over Spring Break. Then send your students back to school with renewed confidence! Report cards are coming out near the end of the month. Have you checked Gradebook online to see how your child is doing? If you have a question or concern, please contact your child s teacher. Finally, I want to thank everyone that supports Osceola Elementary! There are so many dedicated parents, staff, students, community organizations and especially volunteers that serve our school with selfless hearts. Thank you! You all are Awesome! Kevin Flassig

KEEPING UP WITH KINDERGARTEN Spring is coming, and kindergarten is a busy place! We are continuing our mastery of 81 sight words; review them nightly as the end of the year is right around the corner. We are looking forward to learning about plants in science. In math we are working on those tricky missing addend word problems. Practice makes perfect. FUN IN FIRST GRADE First graders have been going on exciting Motion Missions in Science! On these Motion Missions, students are demonstrating that the way to change the motion of an object is to apply a push or a pull. We are using pinwheels, bouncy balls, toy cars, marbles and ramps to really help us learn the tricky science vocabulary. Ask a first grader to teach you about force and motion! SHARING FROM SECOND GRADE 2nd grade has enjoyed reading and learning about Famous African Americans, each class made a "quilt" to be displayed for the day of the Read In. They all turned out amazing! We have been learning how to write friendly letters, it's been a lot of fun. If you have a relative that does not live near you ask your child to write them a letter using all 5 parts of a friendly letter. We are also learning how to tell time on an analog clock so please practice this with your child. As you can see we are busy, busy at work in 2nd Grade!!! FIFTH GRADE S FOCUS (SEE REVERSE SIDE) THIRD GRADE THOUGHTS Third grade is reviewing and introducing new skills weekly in preparation for our next VLT (Volusia Literature Test), VMT (Volusia Math Test) and the big FSA (Florida State Assessment). The week we get back from Spring Break, we will begin the FSA in reading. So every teacher in third grade would like to encourage your child to continue to read over Spring Break at least minutes a day. Whatever time your child reads during the regular school week would be best. Keeping to your normal routine will be beneficial for your child s reading comprehension. In addition, we are very proud of our students. They continue to amaze us with their learning. This year we are asking more why questions; which is what critical thinking is all about. Try this strategy with your child. You will be amazed at how they are beginning to become amazing critical thinkers. Some examples: Student, 10 x 5 = 50. Mom or dad, How do you know that? Student, The character in my story is nice. Mom or dad, Why are they nice? What are they doing that makes you think they are nice? Third grade teachers say thank you for trusting us with your most precious child. FOURTH GRADE FACTS Fourth grade is honoring Great African Americans with video biographies. This is part of our activities including, readings and pairing up with Mrs. Interdonato in creating illustrations with famous quotes of Martin Luther King Jr. This is a nice break from all our testing that we are involved in this month. We will also be getting up close and personal with our garden. Our spring garden will be totally planted and maintained by the students. WELCOME INTERNS Ms. Gunn Osceola would like to welcome several interns we have on campus from both Daytona State College and Bethune Cookman University. Mrs. Via s kindergarten class welcomes Mr. Torano, Ms. Gilbert s first grade class welcomes Ms. Gunn, Ms. Byrd s third grade class welcomes Ms. Williams, Ms. Todman s multi-grade class welcomes Mr. Martin and Mr. Hollingsworth s music class welcomes Mr. McCall. Mr. McCall Mr. Torano

FIFTH GRADE S FOCUS ELA: We are practicing this quarter with all our work online. Students are identifying the standards in the question, then thinking through their strategies. Check out our weekly sheet sent on Mondays, for tips to practice. Also coming up soon is the FSA writing. Students ELA grade is made-up of a writing component and reading component. Students should know how to create an organized essay with evidence and elaboration. We have been practicing all year! Math: We are moving into volume and coordinate planes. We are using online tests to prepare for the FSA. Parents, please put your child on learningfarm.com daily. Fifteen minutes a day can do wonders! Science: We are preparing whole groups on Friday for FCAT. We are reviewing 4th grade standards on rocks, and 5th grade standards on science process. In addition, our curriculum will be covering the human organs, flower parts and jobs, and adaptations. Social Studies: Students are working on a lap book about the government. Students will look at the Bill of Rights and ways our government works. Science Club- Science projects are in process for the upcoming School Science Fair on Wednesday, March 30. All projects need to be completed for March 28th. FIFTH GRADE WHOLE GROUP SCIENCE On Friday afternoons, all fifth grade classes have been meeting in the cafeteria for some whole group science lessons including creating circuits, demonstrating force and motion, and discussion on rocks and minerals. MATH NEWS 5th grade are in the lead! One of the 5th grade classes will receive a pizza party to celebrate how many times they logged onto their Learning Farm Math Account at home and at school for the month of February. The challenge starts over for the month of March. The class with the most time on Learning Farm doing Math will receive a class pizza party! Check out how much time each grade level is logging into Learning Farm! WAY TO GO 5th GRADE!!!

WORDS OF Congratulations to the ten students whose artwork was chosen to be judged for the 44th Annual Volusia Students Create K-12 Exhibit: Landon Klarich, Reese Armour, Ethan Hauch, Hannah Little, Chase Drane, Jenny Torres, Noah Bellon, Phoenix Perego, Ashlyn Anton and Abigail Greene. Adjudication took place on Monday, February 1 and Noah s piece, Space, was chosen to be on display for the exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. The show opens April 3. Another show, Art is the First Language will also showcase student work and will be opening March 10 at the ArtHaus in Port Orange. Specific artwork has not been chosen yet, so check here next month to see the artworks selected for display. Meanwhile in the art studio, kindergarten and first grade students are learning about mixing paint colors to create new colors while second graders are beginning a pop art portrait project based on the art of Andy Warhol (ask them about his life!) Third, fourth and fifth grade students have been trying out a new choice-based format in the art studio. They are free to select their subject matter and materials and are responsible for behaving like artists. Students are learning valuable problem-solving skills as well as persistence and creativity. PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS Hello Osceola families! The month of February has flown by! Students have been having a ball in P.E. learning new and effective ways to increase cardiovascular endurance and building muscle strength by being introduced to Tabata workouts. Tabata is a series of 20-second workouts with 10 seconds of rest in between each circuit. Of course we follow up with stretching to increase flexibility, which creates a total workout in our short warm-up before our skills and drills or game of the day. Spring weather will allow a more consistent outdoor schedule. Dressing in athletic clothes and shoes is important on P.E. days, as always. Getting strong to live long is our motto in P.E. class here at the greatest school, Osceola Elementary! MUSIC NOTES Peyton Fitzgerald and Maya Cosme represented our school with pride and honor as All County Chorus Members. FROM THE CLINIC Flu season is upon us. Please remind your child to practice good hygiene and cover his/her mouth when coughing or sneezing. Also, remind students to wash their hands regularly with soap and water. The BEST thing you can do to help prevent the spread of the cold and flu viruses is to keep your sick child home until they are feeling better.

SKYLER S PLACE WHAT S UP IN MEDIA? What s happening in media you ask? How about this Hit the Books, Social Studies Fair, African American Read-In, Computer Lessons, Sunshine Reading Charms, Science Fair, Award Winning Authors research, Black History videos Oh, wait, let me slow down a little and tell you about each one. The Hit the Books reading program began March 7th and will run through April. This incentive reading program challenges every student to read at home and record their reading on their Hit the Books bookmark. Complete the bookmark and receive tickets to a Daytona Tortugas baseball game. Keep reading! With our Feature Island topic being Award Winning Authors and February being Black History Month, we ve been using laptop computers to do research on some award winning black authors. Do you know who Kadir Nelson and Eloise Greenfield are? If not, ask your child. Also, some of our upper level students have used apps on the ipads to create video biographies that have been shown on our morning WONN student-run news broadcast. During the last week of February the school s top Fourth grade Social Studies projects were put on display in the media center. The theme this year was Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History. District competition was held at Mainland High School on February 27th. We had some great projects created by our Osceola students. Get your SSYRA Charms NOW! If you are in 2nd through 5th grades, you can build your Sunshine State Young Reader Award charm keychain by simply reading! For each SSYRA book that you read, take the Reading Counts quiz and then fill out one of the yellow sheets on Mrs. Keck s checkout desk. See if you can collect all 15 charms. The fifth grade science club has been busy working on their science fair projects which are due to the media center on March 29th. Judging will be done on March 30th and the winners announced on the WONN news on March 31st. Good luck to all participants! Remember, the sky s the limit, Skyler
