2 ZINGER! Some pretty famous people have made the fabled journey from Lismore to Geelong, not the least a bloke by the name of Reg Hickey, who if we can digress for just a moment - also has strong links to Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club. And every time someone smashes the ball to the boundary, perhaps instead of the normal cry of SHOT! we all say together, ZINGER! Sixth XI premiership players John and Ryan Hickey, are direct descendants of Reginald Joseph Hickey, GFC s coach of the century. After that gentle digression, we can now move smoothly from GFC to KFC. The football and cricketing Hoskings followed the Hickey path to Geelong and thankfully, Craig and his son Tim have found their way to Queens Park. Tim is a fine batsman and occasional wicketkeeper in the ones. When he kept in the first game out of Bell Post Hill when the Pom was late, someone said he had hands like buckets, KFC buckets, and thought themselves a bit clever. Pity the Pom didn t have hands like buckets when that first catch went high into the Australian sun and ended up on the turf instead of his hands, but that s another story, even if he was crying foul! So, on and off the field, the Hoskings are tremendous supporters of our club. Tim s father Craig, in partnership with Tim s uncle, Scott, is the key KFC franchisee in Geelong. KFC is a major sponsor of Newtown and Chilwell, and as part of that deal, Two Blue folk with a penchant for deep Southern fried chicken with an Australia flavour (and we hear this includes the coach) are encouraged to key an eye out for special offers. Our club is grateful to the Hoskings and to KFC for their support, especially those special offers, said president Phil Morgan. I know Craig is a big supporter of cricket overall. He has been the cricket convenor at Geelong College, a school with which our club has a special relationship which has extended, of course, to Tim playing with us. So I encourage everyone to give Craig and KFC their full support in return, because that s the way sponsorships in sport should work a two way street. It s about promoting your business, using sport as the medium. Part of that promotion in N&CCC s case will be and not surprisingly - signage. When you have a logo that is recognised all over the world the be-whiskered Colonel Harland Sanders you know instinctively its importance. So keep an eye out for that familiar face on the boundary at Queens Park.
3 Newtown & Chilwell player/member profile Frank Tuskes who passed the 4000 run mark with the club last Saturday. D.O.B: 18 th December 1970 City of Birth: Melbourne Nickname/s: Red, Rhino, Useless, FT, Tuskes, Champ, (DK lately thanks to Carso) Favourite Food/s: Souvlaki at Stalactites in Lonsdale St Melbourne. No garlic but extra chilli sauce. Celebrity Lookalike: David Koch Name of First Girlfriend: Sunshine Sally Interests outside Cricket: Stirring up Sehwag and Biscuit on any given day, two most gullible fools. Crystal Ball Prediction for Season 2014/15: Post Christmas Carso & Jacko to become the leading wicket takers in the GCA competition with the Pom and Biggsy to record match winning opening stands Jack Royce and Oscar Hill to make there senior debuts by seasons end Russell Mitchell to seek clearance to play with Leopold as his wheelchair won t make it all the way to Newtown there are many more but if I told you all then I d have to. Batting Style: Right Arm Grafter like Larry Gomes but he was a left hander. Mirror images Bowling Style: Right Arm Slow Wobblers with occasional heat. Number of Years at N&CCC: Too long, closer to the end than the beginning. Previous Cricket Clubs Played at: N/A Favourite N&CCC Memory: There are lots, probably when Pezzy made a double ton against BPH but in a broad sense this is it. People don t like to talk about the glory days but I remember back when every team expected to play finals. The club rooms used to be the hub of enjoyment with great story telling and boy did we celebrate in each other s success. Funniest Moment on a Cricket Field: 1. Purcy filling in to wicket keep for us in the thirds a few years back when Pezzy & I were in the slips. The first two balls of the match sent Pezzy and I into meltdown. You had to be there Purcy did a great job by the way. 2. When Batesy ran out Stokesy last season at St Josephs and then the very next ball had his stumps blown apart to have Stokesy waiting for him on the boundary line. It was gold Favourite Cricketer: Steve Waugh & Devon Royce Least Favourite Cricketer: Anyone who plays for the opposition and of course Batesy, Stokesy & Biscuit because they all have over inflated opinions of their cricket ability. You could probably chuck in Carso for that matter also and the Pom. Greatest Sledge Heard/Used: Once when I was umpiring the thirds an opposition player asked me to update our scoreboard when we were 3 for bugger all. I ll never forget who Most Annoying Teammate & Why: Russell Mitchell (Biscuit), Jamie Pescott (Champ) & Phil Twaddle (Sehwag). You can t find three bigger useless pr**ks anywhere in the whole wide world. AFL Team: The Pies of course Favourite Music Artist/s: Mumford & Sons

The tears and emotions follow following the passing of Phillip Hughes. The numbers 408 (his Test number) and 63 not out, ( his last Sheffield Innings ) reverted correctly by Cricket Australia as not out rather than retired hurt will leave lasting memories of Aussie cricket fans for many a long time to come. In the Geelong Cricket Association 1st XI, the 408th player was wonderful Bill Eason who played 220 games for Geelong Football Club between but in GCA his record was remarkable. They say records can be broken but Eason s only sits behind Greg Wells all-time record of However Eason s wickets included an incredible 20 times he captured 10 wickets in a match for Belmont, Geelong B, East-Geelong (PreWW1) and current North Geelong CC. No player since 1971 in the modern era has come close with St. Josephs Adrian Kelly achieving the feat just 3 times. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Last week this columnist was proud to be invited to the world premier of The Art of Bradman artworks created by artist Brian Clinton (who painted all AFL clubs Team of the Century paintings) at the National Wool Museum in Geelong. Cricket Victoria, Geelong Cricket Club and Geelong Cricket Association Life Member, former Cricket Australia Chairman, Bob Merriman opened the exhibition. The wonderful 52 paintings by Brian Clinton are simply magnificent. Apart from Clinton s superb works, this column was requested to supply not just personal memorabilia from The Don but also local GCA & GCC memorabilia which includes the bat first used by Lindsay Hassett (his dads bat, Edward which he won in 1900 playing for Fyansford CC for winning the batting average), Jack Baker s silver one foot tall coffee jug and many other GCA & GCC items. The exhibition is open daily at the National Wool Museum until 15 February The owner of the exhibition, Mr. Russell Allen plans after Geelong to transport the collection world-wide so cricket fans you must find space to see the exhibition ASAP! XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX DID YOU KNOW? Stephen Wells, the wonderful recruiting boss at GFC was a most talented cricketer also. He played 137 GCA 1st XI games for Newtown & Chilwell accumulating 4627 runs at an average of He hit 5 centuries his best a GCA all-time record of 237 for Newtown & Chilwell against East-Belmont in
