1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club since 9. January, 6 Vol. No 9 First and Fourths win the close ones as Charlie comes home The Firsts and Fourths pulled off thrilling wins over North Geelong on Saturday while three other sides, the Seconds, Thirds and Eighths turned in highly competitive performances as the Charlie Pearce/Denis Hynes Trophy came home. Hodge twice knocked back the stumps, the second of those poles drawing one of the better responses from the balcony in many a century: That d have to be close! At arvo tea and the compulsory closure, North Geelong had reached 8-9, competitive the balcony said, but we should get them. Shanahan and Hodge thought that too as they shaped - in their languid ways - a partnership of before the former was run out for 8, those ancient knees not able to respond to the appointments being made by that still very sharp cricket brain. Hodge pushed on to 8, a dismissal that un-nerved the balcony, and the eminence gris in the various paisley and purply coloured shirts assembled over near the netball courts. It was going to be tight from here, and it was. Will Simson produced a cameo, the skipper was as resourceful as ever, but at the start of the last over it could go either, way, and might have gone North s way when Jordan Tegelhuter was dismissed. That d be close, too! But Harry Christie got the single to put Marc Carson on strike and with two balls left, he manfully glided the ball through mid-wicket, past a despairing dive or two, the umpire signalled four and around the boundary the cheers and car horns and funny bits of jiggling by the eminence gris in purple and paisley all got started. The Fourths had an even closer win after dismissing North for Ahmer Jalil ( no) and last man in Jack Hastie got the final precious runs after the skipper was dismissed with the score on. Grant Whiteside and Tom Levick also compiled important s in the smallest run chase of the weekend brought about by evenly shared wickets, and four run-outs. North Geelong President Colin Millard presents the Charlie Pearce/Denis Hynes Shield to Phil Morgan and Marc Carson. first at Stinton Oval, the Firsts let North get away to a fly before tight bowling from Damian Shanahan, Marc Carson, Nick McGuane, Chris Pepper and most notably, Dylan Hodge got the Two-Blues back into the game. The Seconds were set 8 after Shane Franklin got a tidy -. He then made equal top score with Sam Jefferies () as the Two-Blues recovered well from a wobbly start, but still fell short. The Thirds had a mountain to climb and although they set up a decent base camp, didn t reach the summit, Brendan Twaddle top-scoring with 68. continued on page

2 First and Fourths win the close ones as Charlie comes home.from page. It was literally and otherwisee anarchy in the t Sixths 68 in reply to Anakie s -6, Xavier Tras top-scoring for the Two- Blues. The Eights endedd up just wide of the mark in their run-chase after East Belmont got away early on an opening partnership of 6 and eventually making. A half century to Aaron Croft and good contributions from Ben Mitchell, Simon Martin and James Hadfield got the Two-Blues to the point where they needed to tie off the last ball, which Peter Stanton whacked for six. The wins in the Firsts means that this summer, the Two-Blues have knocked over both of last year s grand finalists, another sign of growing competitiveness. That victory, combined with the titillating effort of the Fourths, meant the Charlie Pearce Trophy would come home. It is just wonderful to have the trophy back at Queens for the first time since, said club president Morgan. Park Phil Charlie Pearce was an outstanding servant of club, serving for years as the First XI scorer, and hee was also a big supporter of Country Week, as a manager and scorer. He was as famous for having his almost permanent cup of tea beside him as he was for scoring in so many premiership wins for our team. Players of many generations just loved him and a symbol of thatt is the bollard that standss in our club rooms with many premiership medals around it. So many of our players have dedicated their medals too this wonderful man. He was made a life member in 98 and in, thee club created the bollard in honour of his moree than years of service to the club. He is also immortalised on the front coverr of Barnso s Bible in the year, surrounded by the premiership winningg First and Fifth XI players. Having the trophy back at Queens Park is a great way for new generations of players to learn more about this extraordinary many who just loved our cricket club! 7 FIRST X Two Blu ue Scoreboard /6 round 9 XI defeated North Geelongg on Stinton Oval by Josh Barnes courtesy of the Geelong Advertiser. Newtown & Chilwell captain-coach Marc Carson has called on the GCAA to look at changing the fixture to make the draw fairer for all clubs. With round seven lost due to the heat, Carson believes there should be thought about reworking the draw so each club plays each other once. I would have thought the common sense thing going forward would have been that the last game of the year when everybody plays the same side as they did in round one should be the heat day when we got g heated out, which would be the fair thing to do from a club championship perspective, Carson said. I don t know if the GCA is looking at changing it but that would bee the fairest thing t for everyone in the competition I would think. As it stands now, the final round is a reverse of the first, with teams playing each other twice. Carson s side managed their second win of the season on Saturday against North Geelong thanks to all-round performances from Dylan Hodge (- and 8) and Damian Shanahan (-8 and 8) ). Hodge,, who has averaged 6 in three outings this season, combined with Shanahan for a -run partnership as the Two Blues chased down 8. Carson said it was a fair representation of what his side can do when theyy hit top form. If we play our best cricket, we re good enough to compete with anybody, Carson said. Our two wins have been against the two grand finalists of last year soo our good cricket is very good.
