1 Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club Celebrating 107 years TWO BLUE TRIBUNE The official organ of the Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club November 16, 2017 Vol. 45 No 5 Two Blues, One Club, Respect It! Spec s Boys on top of the ladder by Warwick Hadfield Specs Devlin s side continues to be the most successful Two-Blues team after another resounding win over South Barwon last weekend that put them on top of the ladder in their competition. The skipper, Sav, Mule, Simmo, Purc and Blissie all made double figures in a 40 over total of Then Sir Genius and that Spartan bowling action of his went to town 4-30 from eight overs. THE GLITTER GANG IS BACK THIS SATURDAY 18TH NOV AT 7.30pm We welcome back THE GLITTER GANG and Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club s very own Charlie Mitchell with his band SMOKED AND OVERDUE on November 18th. Tickets available on the door, Adults $20. The results elsewhere weren t as happy as a reality check hit the club. The First Xl was well beaten by last year s premier team, Grovedale, at Burdoo Road. The Second Xl had their chances at Queens Park and Grovedale was able to chase down healthy totals in the Third and Fourth Xls, a clear sign of that club s experience and depth. Willem Sanders turned in the all-round performance in his old man s side, a handy 29 with the bat to go with his two wickets, as a master blaster from the past, Col Cunliffe, whacked a half century against Highton. Theirs is no doubt that across the club, the emerging talent is there, but nurturing it require a lot of patience and a lot of dedication at the nets.

3 Celebrating a decade of the Gooch/Insole scholarship and the arrival of F.I.N.K! Steve Winwood and Will Jennings, no doubt unwittingly, penned an anthem for all cricketers when they wrote While You See A Chance, Take It. One such chance occurred in early 2007 as Ricky Ponting s Australians completed their 5-nil obliteration of England in the Ashes series in the Sydney Test. Sigh, remember the days when we beat England by those sorts of margins? Doug Insole, the then president of the MCC, was in a foyeur of the Observatory Hotel in Sydney s Rocks, eviscerating the English players for their lack of toughness. It was suggested by one person listening in to this doleful English lament that Essex, the county Doug served up until his death this year, might like to send out to Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club one of its younger players to toughen him up. Eight months later Jaik Mickleburgh play as a shy 17-year-old, then left in March tough enough to play for England Under 19, and to make his first-class debut. He has been followed since by a number of young Essexians Michael Comber, Sam Arthurton, Jonno Carpenter, Daniel Lawrence, Chris Pepper/Dominic Manthorpe and now the latest, the ferociously skilled Feroze Kushi. He s a very talented lad and will score lots of runs, I am sure, Dan Lawrence said of his county team-mate. Jaik Mickleburgh concurs: He is a very good player and will make a lot of runs. Like Mickleburgh, Comber and Lawrence have gone on to play firstclass cricket, Comber just the one game against the touring Pakistanis, Lawrence to the level of playing the English Lions and a full England cap is not far away. His first-class average is a tad over 42 and his still incipient career features seven centuries, including the one he made on debut at The Oval after which he received the generous handshake of Kevin Pietersen and Kumar Sangakarra welcome to a very special club. The son of a London policeman who was himself a good cricketer until he sustained serious eye accident, Feroze Isa Nazir Khushi (hence his nickname, F.I.N.K) has yet to play at the firstclass level, but has already great success in Second Xl cricket including last August an unbeaten century against Middlesex s Second Xl. When I was young, I tried to hit the ball out of the ground too much, but these days, I have a hunger to stay at the crease and score runs, he says. I am very lucky to have my father as my coach. He has a level 3 coaching certificate and understands the game very well. As well as his batting, Feroze s offspin bowling with an action described by no less a bowling factotum than Phil Twaddle as that of a praying mantis, will be a worthwhile addition to the club s talent pool. The Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club wish F.I.N.K. a summer of success here in Australia as he sets out to add his own narrative to the story of the Gooch/Insole scholarship and then returns home to follow in the spikemarks of Mickleburgh, Lawrence and Co. At the coin toss Captain Harry Rushbrook decided to bat first on the theory that if showers intervened at least we had our bat, we also had a couple of our players held up in traffic so fielding first would have been a challenge. Our opening pair of Ted and Adrian put on 21 without losing a wicket and finding singles where others would be forgiven for leaning on their bat at the non-strikers end, running between wickets was a feature of this partnership. Harry and Nate followed up consolidating the middle order adding another 13 and providing our lower order with a solid platform. Brothers Baxter and Fraser were next to the crease, the scorebook indicated they made 9 runs each. Fraser played a great hook shot but unfortunately knocked his own stumps out of the ground with the follow through. Eoin and Archer added another 18 runs mainly in singles and without losing a wicket. Next in another brother combination of Tom and James, fresh out of a long journey to the match these two added another 20 to the teams mounting score, our first win for the year after two narrow losses seemed to be within our grasp. Our last pair, Oliver and Ted added another fifteen to see us reach 118. With runs on the board and sausages under the belt we took to the field with some confidence and plenty of non-compliant jumpers and hoody's to survive the elements. We had control for the majority of Guild Saints innings, Harry Rushbrook kept admirably for his first try behind the stumps.(he said his try last also) Fraser got his first ever wicket ending the match with two. Our fielding was much better this week which contributed to a few run outs and many close calls. We ended up winning the match by 20 odd runs which after losing the previous two matches by a handful of runs was a good reward for all involved.
