1 THE TIGER ROAR Vol 10 Edition 2: October 2016 Official Website: President: Stephen Oliver MENTONE CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER Editor : Lachlan Quinn Contact: mentonecricketclub@yahoo.com.au (M) Welcome to the October edition of the club s newsletter, the Tiger Roar. I d like to welcome everyone to the start of the season, and let s hope the weather can turn and give us a clear run at some cricket. Our juniors have all started in earnest last weekend, and I urge all senior players if you get the chance to get along to a junior game over the coming weeks and have a look at our promising batch of junior cricketers. there is a lot still to come in the next fortnight we hope. Annual Subs this year: Player Sponsor $300 Senior $250 Student/Apprentice/Unemployed $160 Junior player $140 Social Member (non playing) $50 This newsletter has been sent to both Senior and junior addresses, one of the club s major focus areas moving forward is to integrate both the junior and senior players and families to create one club. This is established through a number of pillars, including: Junior/Senior points trophy, which accumulates points from Junior and Senior players paired together at random Senior players Jordan Young (Under 16s), Steve Oliver, Eddy McGarry, Liam Anastasio (Under 12s), Lachlan Quinn (Milo T20 Blast), Tommy Smith (Under 12s and Milo in2cricket) and Mike Waller (Academy) all coaching junior sides Tiger of the Month awards evenings every month at Mentone clubrooms By doing so we hope to encourage Junior players and parents new to the club, to feel comfortable in the environment and make the transition to senior cricket much easier when they do get a bit older. We also play senior matches every Saturday, and each second Sunday at our main Mentone ground, and would love to see as many families come along to support the club. To read more on the junior section, head to page 5. Subs payment As a reminder all players subs are now due. We have a lot of our expenses at the start of the season like affiliation, insurance and council fees, not to mention match balls and bar purchases. It would be appreciated if you could pay these as soon as possible, or speak to our Treasurer Chris O Connor about a payment plan. We have 5 senior people paid, and 3 player sponsors paid up, so with 8 people financial you can imagine If you organise a player sponsor, you will not need to pay yearly subs, additionally all players who are sponsored will get their photos up on the clubroom wall along with their sponsor s name. All subs can be paid through the club s bank account, through cheques payable to Mentone Cricket Club, or in person with cash or EFTPOS to Chris O Connor (Treasurer) from now onwards. Remember to notate your name for all internet transfers & Chris (coconnor@gpcasiapac.com). Payment can also be made on the EFT machine which will be at the bar. Name: Mentone Cricket Club BSB Acct Number Weekly subs are again set at $13 for seniors, $8 for players under the age of 18. These are payable each week by all players and help cover the costs of balls and umpires, please pay your team manager/vice captain or captain prior to play. Senior Clothing A quick summary of clothing requirements this season: All 2 day matches players will wear whites as per last season. All 1 day matches Firsts and Seconds are wearing black pants and MCC Tiger one day shirt. Thirds are wearing white pants and MCC Tiger one day shirt. Any player playing Firsts, Seconds or Thirds, or a combination of, will need white playing shirt, white pants, black one day pants and MCC Tiger one day shirt for a combination of 2 day and 1 day games.

2 - 2 - Any player playing Fourths will need white pants and the MCC Tiger one day shirt. A number of players still do not have the MCC Tiger one day shirt which everyone will need as all teams are scheduled to play one day games. Please see Cam or Dan Young to place an order. Club Umpire needed We are looking for a 'Club Umpire' who would officiate each week in the lower grades. You can choose to do Mentone games at Highett, or neutral games. Umpire would receive $130 per week and would get uniform and training. Similarly we are also looking for a nomination for a Tribunal member from our club to serve on the hopefully (rare) occasions a Tribunal is called. Anyone interested should contact Lachlan or Steve Oliver. New Players Welcome to our new players who have joined us this season. Simon Cormie, previously Old Mentonians CC, who will Captain the First XI and bat in the top order. Jake Bloomer, previously Old Mentonians CC who is a left hand bat and right arm medium bowler. Mike Waller, overseas player from Tunbridge Wells CC in the Kent area (plays at the same club as Dave Smith), is a top order bat and spin bowler. Tommy Smith, overseas player from Ashley CC in Manchester (plays at the same club as Jack Snelling) is a middle order bat and wicketkeeper. Kevin Dahl joins us, who has moved into the area from Spotswood (originally Canberra) and we welcome him. Kev is a right arm medium pace bowler. Mark Henderson trained with us last night and is straight into the Seconds, Mark is from Scotland and spending the summer here working at Royal Melbourne, a left hand bat, Mark is a great addition. We also have a few junior players stepping up to play their first senior matches. Tom Ingmire and Lachlan Jones both enjoyed promising debuts in the Fourth XI last week. Overseas Players We have two overseas players this season. Mike Waller is a right hand top order bat and spin bowler, who plays with Tunbridge Wells in the Kent Premier League. Mike plays with Dave Smith who we want to thank for assisting Mike in getting here, and for recommending us as a club. Tommy Smith is a right hand bat and wicketkeeper who has joined us from Ashley CC in the Cheshire Cricket League, where past player Jack Snelling now plays. With a lack of wicketkeeping options at the club, we reached out to Jack who recommended Tommy to come across and spend a season in Australia. Tommy has immediately been involved in training, working with Christian and Dan Young on their keeping, and most importantly has taken on dual coaching roles with the Friday Milo in2cricket program, and with our Saturday Under 12 Rookies team. We welcome both Mike and Tommy to Mentone, and hope you thoroughly enjoy your time at our club over the next 6 months. Please make them feel welcome as you see them around the place. A big thankyou to Ty and Tania Edwards for their generous support with loaning them a car. Whilst Mike has some work sorted, we are still looking for some casual work for Tommy, who is available most days, and has a working Visa. If you know of anything, please speak to Tommy or let Lachlan know. Social Committee Duff is chairing our Social Committee again this season and is looking for some willing helpers to help make our social scene run smoothly. Please get in contact if you are able to help. Our first function is the Sports Night, Saturday 19th November at the club. Details below: Saturday 19 th November 7.30 pm TICKETS $40 Includes light food from the kitchen Hosted by EON Digital s Jack Heverin

3 - 3 - Cancer Council Trivia Tomorrow Night This Saturday (22 nd of October) the club is hosting a Trivia Night for the Cancer Council to fight Breast Cancer. This is being run by Erin Quinn and is the 4 th year we have held this event, Mentone CC is proud to provide our clubrooms free of charge and will be donating all proceeds from the bar on the night. All Mentone players and supporters are welcome to attend, there are still spots available and you can turn up on the night as we are still trying to fill a player s table. Tickets are $20, there are auction items, bake sale and a major raffle, all proceeds raised will go directly to charity. Raffle prizes 1st prize- TCL 65" 4K Ultra HD LED LCD Smart TV, RRP $1898 2nd prize- Kas Richards Photography Session, RRP $600 3rd prize- Cleveland Golf Pack, including Cart Bag, Driver, Putter and 1 Dozen Srixon Balls, RRP $560 4th prize- Endota spa voucher, RRP $100 5th prize- Essential Beauty voucher, RRP $50 Tickets can be bought online HERE Fantasy League Only 19 teams entered this year which is a bit down on last year, but we push on and look forward to an interesting season with over $80 cash on offer to the winner. Great to see Dandenong Premier star Dane Heverin staying involved with a team, and Eddy McGarry who has entered two teams. The President, Steve Oliver has placed a team and will be watching the progress of his players very carefully. Senior/Junior Points Trophy We will be resurrecting the Senior/Junior Points Trophy this season, which places a senior and a junior player together, awards points for on field runs and wickets, and off field support. Everyone will be notified shortly of their pairing. Some key points to remember: The basic 1 point per run, 5 points per catch, 10 points per wicket will apply. In terms of support, each time the Senior player watches his Junior play, they receive 20 points, and likewise for Juniors. Pairings will be announced over the next week. Upcoming Milestones There are some milestones approaching that are worth noting: Andrew Peake (playing game 198), Lachlan Quinn (197), and Stuart Scullin (196) are all approaching the 200 game milestone. Leigh Jones (149) and Jason Gumbleton (145) are closing in on 150 games, whilst Darren Skadiang (94) and Jordan Young (91) will play their 100th games this season. Jason Gumbleton (1811) is another good season away from passing 2,000 runs; whilst Josh Fisher (when back from Fiji, and recovered from his corkie) is on 892 runs, Cal Fryer (886) and Andy Ware (872) are also within the 1,000 run mark. Tom Barker (92), Chris McCready (81) and Liam Anastasio (76) are all approaching 100 wickets. Peter Duffy, on 445 wickets, is approaching Stan Hogben (449 in 11th spot) and Matt Lalor (459 in 10th spot). Andrew Peake (4,220) is just 123 runs from entering the top 20 run-scorers of all time. With only one game completed, the Faz has made an early start worth noting with 77* and 2 wickets in the 4th XI first up win. Whilst he s unavailable until December, with plenty of 1 day and T20 games to follow, he looks a great pick up for the one coach who backed him in Dan Fyfe. In terms of popular players, First XI trio Simon Cormie (15), Lewis Oliver (15) and Mike Waller (14) have been picked in the most teams. John Bamfield looks the value bet this year, and after starting off with 47 runs in the 4ths win, the 14 people who picked him will be very happy. Opening bowler Chris McCready is in 13 teams, whilst Jordan Young, a traditionally consistent Fantasy League scorer, is in 11 teams. Coaches were split on wicketkeepers, with Christian Harris in 8 teams, Tommy Smith in 7, Wally Tedde in 2 and Dan Young in 1. United Fuel Offer We are pleased to be partnering with United Petrol to offer our members a compelling fuel discount offer. The offer simply fill up your tank at any United petrol station, swipe your card and receive 2c discount per litre for you, 2c per litre donation for the club. 4 - 4 - Vale Betty Edwards We were saddened to hear of the passing of Betty Edwards, Mentone CC supporter and mother of Premiership Player Dean Edwards. All at the Mentone Cricket Club wish to pass on our condolences to Dean and family. Around the Grounds Great to see Dane Heverin start his season off where it left, in great form, with scores of 70 and 41 for Dandenong Premier Thirds Mentone overseas player from 2014/15, Will Hale, will spend the season playing in Shepparton for Mooroopna, and started round 1 with a hundred in a winning side Congratulations to past Mentone Overseas players, Dave Smith and Rich Hudson, who announced their engagements recently, and to Simon Watkins who was married last month. We eagerly await news on Jack Snelling and Sam Eaton s impending nuptials And of course, congrats to one of our own, Luke Beveridge, on coaching the Western Bulldogs to their 2016 AFL Premiership. Luke has played a number of seasons with us in between football commitments, and we were delighted to see his success. Ryan Bignell Cup The Ryan Bignell Cup is in its 8th year, and is a light hearted, fun way of giving votes to players who do the silly and strange things on or off the cricket field. Votes have started to come in and we ll have an update for October, in next month s edition. If you have any suggestions for votes, send them through to Lachlan. Season Launch A big thankyou to Steve Oliver, Brian Quinn and the numerous Mums and Dads who helped out at the Season Launch on Thursday night. It was fantastic to see so many junior families along, to Cr Geoff Gledhill for attending, and Bendigo Bank Branch Manager Peter Woolf who was there to support and provide a cheque to the club as part of the Bendigo Bank s support to community sporting organisations. Classic Bats You ve probably seen around the club a number of players with fresh looking bats and new Classic stickers on these. Club Legend Peter Duffy is running a bat restoration business that is really taking off. Classic Bats is not only active on Twitter but are providing Mentone players with repairs to their current cricket bats. Pete has been extremely generous donating restored bats for training purposes, for our junior teams, and donated a bat for our Season Launch raffle won by the Provenzale s. If your bat needs some TLC, speak to Peter on Social Media Remember to follow us on Social Media to stay up to date with everything that is happening around the club. Facebook: Mentone Cricket Club To be added to our distribution list, please Lachlan on lquinn@mdlz.com Faz top scoring in the 4ths last week

5 - 5 - Junior Section Our junior program continues to grow and with such a promising group of young players we are well set up This season we have an Under team, 3 Under 12 sides, 2 Milo T20 Blast teams and a Milo in2cricket Friday night program. La Porchetta are again on board as the Junior Sponsor and will support us. A big thanks to our coaches this season without whom we simply could not operate our junior program. This season we have 4 teams, 1 x Under 16 and 3 x Under 12 sides, with Brian Quinn leading the program as Junior Coordinator. To our coaches - Jordan Young (Under 16s), Steve Oliver, Eddy McGarry, Liam Anastasio (Under 12s) and Tommy Smith (Under 12s and Milo in2cricket) a big thankyou from everyone involved. Having had the chance to attend the Rookies first game last week it was terrific to see so many parents and family members cheering the kids on, helping with tasks such as scoring, umpiring, practising with the kids, your help is much appreciated! A reminder if you have not yet paid your registration fees, these need to be paid as soon as possible. Unfortunately if you have not paid, your child is not registered or insured, so please get in contact if payment is a concern and we can work out some options. These should arrive in December and will be mailed to the address provided on your registration form. Junior Helmets Requirements Cricket Australia recently announced changes to regulations for helmets use, particularly around juniors. Key points are below: - all juniors under the age of 18 must wear helmets when batting and wicket keeping, including when playing senior cricket; - helmets will become compulsory for all senior community cricketers by the season; - helmets are strongly recommended for all seniors when batting, wicket keeping up to the stumps and in some fielding positions; - helmets must be compliant with the British Standard BS , as prescribed by the ICC Juniors requiring equipment Mentone CC have joined with two prominent local sports stores to provide our members with a discount on purchases, and the club with a 5% rebate on all purchases.
