4 CURNOCK NEWS At our last assembly it was lovely to welcome back Mr Mike Hart, in his new role as a trustee of The Newbury & District Cancer Care Trust. Mr Hart came on their behalf to accept a cheque which represented all the money raised during the School academic year 2012/2013 by Curnock House. The total amount came to 4, which was a great achievement and everyone who worked so hard to raise this money should feel justly proud of themselves. In his acceptance speech Mr Hart mentioned that Curnock House remains one of the Trust s biggest contributors and expressed their gratitude for everything we do. Cancer is no longer the scary disease it once was but it will still touch the lives of most of us at some point. The work of the Trust in supporting people during their illness is invaluable and can only continue because of donations by well wishers such as ourselves. Curnock will continue to work towards matching this figure, and maybe even bettering it, during the coming academic year. The House Council are working on a scheme that will involve the whole House and we have already had sponsored cake sales, a sponsored silence and a fudge sale. Well done everyone and keep up the good work. It is clearly much appreciated! Mrs Mounsey and Mrs Kempster BOYS PE Y8 Football St Bart s vs Lord Williams We kicked off and immediately Lord Williams were pressurised. Eventually there was a free kick which Jake Pemberton took. The ball was surging towards Jamie who then volleyed it in. Shortly after, Lukas Rollett tapped it in passed the keeper. However, another volley was slipped past the goal keeper by Lord Williams number 6. Then another shot was taken, and Lord Williams scored again. Archie Awford then picked up the ball and the halfway mark then dribbled it to become one on one with the keeper then the ball was fired in to the bottom right corner. Halftime was called then, St Bart s came on with a different formation which was However Lord Williams took an out of range shot which swooped past the keeper and the scored was made 3-3. Both sides were attacking the ball going box to box but the game drew to a disappointing conclusion. Report by Archie Awford 8C1 GIRLS PE Netball Sixth Form v St Gabriel s In the first league match of the season St Bart s quickly took the lead against St Gabriel s setting a large goal difference after just the first quarter. However, the difference in goals narrowed briefly towards the middle of the match. This only made the team more determined to win leaving a successful score of Player of the match went to goal attack Emma Seymour. Netball News Well done to our Year 10 and Year 11 netball teams who both beat The Willink in their latest round of league matches. Scores and players of the match were: Y10 won 12-7 Elvia Clark-Morris Y11 won 10-4 Lottie Woodley - 4 -
5 Lacrosse Y8 v Heathfield The Year 8 team had a tremendous win against Heathfield on 11 January with everyone contributing. The defence managed to clear the ball every time it came into the fan, and the attack timed their cuts very well, helping us beat Heathfield Congratulations to player of the match Lauren Bell and everyone else who scored. Team Davina Emetulu, Alice Points captain, Harriet Atherton, Izzy Lainsbury vice captain, Lucy James, Katherine W-B, Courtney Renouf, Hannie Makant, Millie Pope, Sophie Harrop, Finola Mangan, Thea Manton, Alex Earl, Lilia Norman, Emma Greenslade, Lauren Bella and Niamh Watson. Lacrosse News Last week there were home fixtures against St Mary s Calne. Despite the weather the matches went ahead and there were some exciting and close games. Results and players of the matches were: 1 st team lost 6-8 Amy Hodgson 2 nd team lost 2-9 Lizzie Dunmore Y10 lost 5-15 Annie Taylor Y9 lost 4-14 Georgie Sanderson Y8 drew 8-8- Sophie Harrop Y7 lost 5-12 Sophie Stancombe Y9 v St Mary s Calne The team was missing two players and this showed; the girls were disappointed with a 4-14 defeat. Amber Layton and Abi Graham scored in the first half and Abi and Annabel Mangan scored in the second half. Our fourth goal was a brilliant move with a great pass from Georgie Sanderson and dodge from Annabel to receive the pass and put a great finish past the St Mary s goal keeper. Training is fully underway to prepare for the next fixtures. Squad Freya Eva, Alissa Thiel, Rebecca Shaw, Laura Kirk captain, Izzy Sanders vice captain, Abby Graham, Georgina Sanderson, Annabel Mangan, Frankie Twyford, Amber Layton, Beth Daly, Mia Drury Miss Ostinelli Y10 v St Mary s Calne The team approached the pitch ready to go after a long warm up and motivating team chant. Jo Kirk started the game with one of her consistent, determined draws sending the ball to St Bart s and we scored within the first few minutes. Attack displayed beautiful passing and catching using wing, middle, wing later followed by an amazing goal from Amy Bowen. Ruby Horsnby threw several powerful shots at goal and performed some lovely work in front and behind goal as the opposition fought to gain possession. Despite some errors we kept player our best until half time when Mrs Leach gave an inspirational team talk to get us focused for the second half. The team spirits were lifted by an amazing goal from Sam Jarman, an interception from Saffron Langley, bringing the ball back to attack and very good stick work from Harriet Denton beside goal. We missed our goalie Jenny Alston, however Freya Eva bravely stepped in and she made superb saves and clears. Thank you to all the parents for their brilliant support from the side lines. Team Freya Eva, Cait Prendergast, Saffron Langley, Suzie Winsor Grace Porter-Brown, Sophie Steele-Childe, Annie Taylor, Bobbie Lainsbury, Jo Kirk, Ruby Hornsby, Sasie Spencer, Sam Jarman, Alex Jarman, Harriet Denton, Amy Bowen and Lauren Manton.
