1 RGS Junior School Bulletin Thursday 14th February 2019 Spring Term: Volume 6 ASSEMBLY NEWS In Assembly on Friday we had a triple whammy of interesting themes: First up were the Year 9 boys, Daniel, Daniel, Adam and Laki who came to show us their incredibly professional mini film clip about the chemicals we find in everyday life and to celebrate the 150 th year of the periodic table. It was a very proud moment for JS teachers to see such fine young men coming back to enthuse young minds (and some older ones too!) Secondly, the main event! Grace, Meghna, Hannah, Anna and Tanvi (6L) gave a passionate and enlightening presentation on animal cruelty and what we can do to prevent or reduce it. Perhaps the most staggering fact they gave was that if the human race slaughtered themselves at the same rate they do animals, we would be extinct within 17 days. I m hoping to go skiing at Easter so I hope we don t start! Finally, I gave an introductory presentation on the Cancer Run and handed out some flyers and stickers to prompt children to think about signing up. We usually have a wonderful turn out. Let s not let Miss Gravely down as she is the driving force.shall we aim for a record breaking entry this year? I m signed up and ready to go come and join us and have some fun getting fitter! For details of how to register, please see Miss Gravely s Cancer Run article on p.2 of this week s Bulletin. Mr Miller CONGRATULATIONS to Nicholas L (6M) who was swimming the Northumberland and Durham Championships at the weekend. He swam 50 back and 100 back and did really well, coming 12 th and 11 th, respectively. He missed the final on the 100 back by 1 place (and about 1/10 th of a second) which was a shame but maybe next year! Well done, Nicholas! CONGRATULATIONS to the U10 Morpeth Hockey Team, including Frankie F, David W, Peter H, Caitlin C and Bethany C, who won the tournament and will now represent Durham & Northumberland in the Borders Finals on the 17th March! Well done, everyone! DATES FOR YOUR DIARY (sports fixture timings as per letters) Mon 25th Feb Tues 26th Feb Wed 27th Feb Thurs 28th Feb Fri 1st March TERM RESUMES. 3 Rugby News Year 6 Sevens Rugby at Durham School - Friday 8th February We decided to split the teams equally for our participation in the Durham 7 s with positive results. The All Blacks skippered by Nicholson, also included Robson, Udawatte, Colbeck, Riccalton, Wilson, Clark and Prichard. I must say they performed with aplomb!! Undefeated throughout the entire day. An early win against Terrington Hall was followed by victories against Bow 2, Mowden Hall, and Barnard Castle, in this game our defence particularly was magnificent. We topped the group and entered another league against the vaunted Aysgarth and Red House from Stockton, who had also won their groups. In the Aysgarth game we played exceptionally well, handling effectively, finding space and contesting possession, resulting in another win. A convincing performance against Red House rounded off a great day of rugby. Well done boys!! Mr Pollock The second half of our Year 6 Sevens team were the Springboks skippered by Ben Ponton, also including Reddy, Salim, Wayman, Emmerson, Sahadevan, Beale, Jones, and Tulloch. Drawn a tough group, the boys fought every game to the final whistle. A great start beating a strong Austin Friars team, followed by close losses to Redhouse and Cundall Manor. A draw against Bow 1, again a game we could have won finished the group stages. Coming third in the group stage put us in the tier 3 finals against Kings and Terrington Hall. In the Kings game we played very well, defending strongly and contesting possession, but losing closely. The Terrington Hall game proved a game too many for us, with Beale leaving with illness, we looked tired and unfortunately lost again. The boys left with their heads held high though, knowing each game could have gone either way! I am very proud of everyone who played! Mr Blackburn Ski Race in Sunderland - Friday 8th February RGS were invited to the inaugural inter-schools ski race hosted by Argyle House. After driving through high winds and torrential rain, we arrived at Silksworth to beautiful blue skies and gorgeous sunshine. Around 80 children hit the slopes for some free skiing before they were sent down 1 by 1 through the slaloms and across the finish line. A roaring reception from parents and staff welcomed each child across the finishing post. We had such a lovely afternoon. We have some very talented skiers in our school. Well done to everyone involved! Mr Cragg and Mrs Clappison Swimming Gala v St Olave s Last week, over 60 RGS children were involved in a swimming gala against St Olave s, here at RGS. These fixtures have traditionally been very competitive and this one was no exception! There were some very close races and all the swimming coaches were impressed by the standard shown by both schools. Some of the results were very close, with RGS girls winning at Under 8, Under 9 and Under 10 and RGS boys taking the win at Under 8 and Under 10. This meant that the overall result went to RGS, with a score of 299 to 269. After the gala, we all enjoyed lunch with the opposing team, before heading back to afternoon lessons. It was a super event many thanks to all the swimmers and parents for their efforts and support. Mrs Baker
4 TECHNOLOGY TOM On Monday 11th February both Year 3 and Year 6 took part in DT workshops with Technology Tom. Year 3 spent the morning designing and making their own bridges. The children considered how certain shapes and forces can affect the strength of a structure. Year 6 spent the afternoon designing and firing their own rockets and pupils took part in various challenges including target accuracy, delivering a rescue message and distance recording. We certainly have some engineers in the making. Well done everyone! Mrs McCulloch Year 3 Bridges: Y3 Quotes: I loved how we found out how strong paper was - it was an unforgettable experience. Anna F (3S) I loved how he showed us how to make the bridges and the fact that the Tyne Bridge is made out of triangular prisms. Kimaya R (3S) I enjoyed learning the different steps to make a bridge. I learnt that paper is not weak - it is strong. Sisi Z (3S) Year 6 Rockets: Y6 Quotes: I loved Technology Tom! We made rockets and had to try and send a message with our rockets. We used an air pump and got points for making our rocket hit a box or go in the tramlines. Harman G (6W) We had a good experience with Technology Tom, launching rockets. My favourite part was the rescue rockets. Suyash D (6W)
5 Year 5 Science Day Monday 11th February Quotes: It was really interesting learning about things we hadn't learnt about before, like crystals. Emily F (5W) It was really good. I liked making the crystals and watching Andy doing Fabulous Flames, especially when he set his hand on fire! Luke C (5S) I liked it when we looked at the sheep heart because we got to see all the different chambers. Anay P (5B) I liked the fire - you got to see things you wouldn't normally see in school and it was really dangerous! Alyssa M (5B) YEAR 3 VISIT THE GREAT NORTH MUSEUM Year 3 had a yabba dabba doo time at the Great North Museum learning about the Stone Age! (hopefully some of you parents remember The Flintstones with fondness!) We attended an interesting workshop where we saw artefacts and then explored the gallery. Many thanks go to Mr Corrigall and Mrs Baillie who accompanied us on this trip. Mrs Stairmand
6 CHESS NEWS The EPSCA (English Primary Schools Chess Association) local qualifying round took place in our Fenwick Hall on Saturday 2 nd February. RGS had 6 teams, with 3 in the U11 section and 3 in the U9 section. There were 6 players on each team, with only the first 5 boards counting. I am delighted to say that RGS won both sections. In the U9 tournament, RGS A won with 27/30. Congratulations to Arun M and Archit U for scoring a perfect 6/6. Frankie F, Jinfan C and Kaipo W all finished on a very good 5/6 and Daylan D also did well, finishing on 4/6. RGS B also qualified for the semi-final in Prestatyn, scoring 20/30 and winning the silver medals for second place. Raffy B and Liam B both performed really well, finishing on 5/6. Gabriel B scored 4.5 points and Jack A finished on 4. RGS C won the bronze medals, in third place with 11/30. In the U11 section, RGS A did even better, winning with 27.5/30. Yichen H, Bhuvan J and Prachi A all scored a perfect 6/6. Henry R scored a perfect 4/4, as one of the other teams had a player missing. Krishen K finished on 5/6 and Ray L on 4.5/6. The B team also qualified, with 21/30 in second place. Lyege P scored an excellent 5.5/6. Craig L, Suyash D and Will W all scored 4/6. Unfortunately, RGS C finished in fourth place, managing 4.5/30. Everyone enjoyed the day, and our young chess players are looking forward to the annual trip to Prestatyn over the weekend of 7-9 June in the summer. The Dame Allan's individual chess tournament will take place at their Junior School on Saturday 2nd March, from 10am to 4pm. Parents please go to to enter. There will be U9 (years 3 and 4) and U11 (years 5 and 6) sections. Mr Eggleston
