1 RGS Junior School Bulletin A NOTE FROM MR C This is the penultimate Bulletin of our school year and, at the time of writing, it goes to press just before the school production of Mary Poppins. There is immense excitement and rather a lot of tension as the cast approach their big first night. We are anticipating two wonderful performances, with packed audiences and memorable moments. But, just in case it makes a difference, I have to say to everyone, Break a leg! Now, what a terrible thing for a Head to suggest to his students - he clearly has gone cuckoo after all - or has he? Just what is the origin of that theatrical saying? An HMM to all who find out. Next week s final edition should have some photos from the Big Show, perhaps classes from Induction Day and news of the final rounders, cricket and even an aquathon event to report on. In Junior School we don t say roll on the holidays, we just keep going from one great event to another and then, after Prize Giving, we just might book that flight or ferry crossing! Mr Craig Friday 22nd June 2018 Summer Term: Volume 9 Calling All Parents On Wednesday 27th June at 6pm the staff v parents hockey match begins. The parents currently hold the trophy but are light of a player or two. Without your help the staff will win by default...and you would not want that to happen would you?! All abilities welcome...please frederikvandelft@hotmail.com for more information. Mr Miller Pottery Café at The RGS Summer Fair A pottery café will be taking place during this year s summer fair. We have ceramic sheep, elephants, piggy banks and trainers to paint. Prices vary between 5 and 7. The price includes all glaze paints, the ceramic item itself and bisque firing. Arrive early to avoid disappointment as once they are gone they are gone! 3 IAPS National Finals Last week, Thomas Newton from 6L travelled down to London to take part in the IAPS National Finals at the London Aquatic Centre. This was the first time the event had been held there and it was a fantastic opportunity to swim in the pool that was used in the 2012 Olympics. Thomas was the only swimmer to qualify from the RGS in the heats, which were held back in February, so it was a great achievement to make the finals. In the 25m butterfly, Thomas swam very well against some extremely tough competition and finished 16 th overall. He should be very proud of himself I know that we are all very proud of him! Miss Bolam STEM EVENT AT MOWDEN HALL On Tuesday 19 th June a group of seven mathematicians (Sam Wardle, Zuhair Abdullah, Thomas Newton, Tobias Smith, Sulemaan Haque and Rory Linkleter) went to Mowden Hall for a STEM event. The author of 'Murderous Maths' series, Kjartan Poskitt, showed us how fun maths and science can be. He showed us maths tricks that seemed like magic and explained to us how big the solar system is. Throughout the presentation he put in loads of hilarious jokes making the presentation much more enjoyable. We then completed a multiple choice quiz with questions that were comedic but also challenging. Everyone enjoyed it and thought it was great. Sam Wardle (6L) CONGRATULATIONS... to Daisy Cumpson (6L) who passed the audition and has been offered a place on the Royal Ballet Mid Associates Programme in Newcastle. She also completed the Junior Associate programme and recently received a certificate for this. The Royal Ballet Associates programme provides top quality professional ballet training to a small number of talented dancers around the UK. Daisy is looking forwards to joining the Mid Associate class from September. Well done, Daisy! ROUNDERS MATCH REPORT On Tuesday 12th June, some Year 6 girls played in a rounders tournament. First we played Durham High, fielding first. There was some great fielding from everyone! Going into bat, there were some great hits! The end score was 5½ to 6. Well tried, girls - it was so close! Then we played Dame Allan s and we showed some great batting and fielding skills. We only won by one rounder (6½ to 5½). Then we played NPS - there were some great hits from the opposition and some good fielding, ending with a score of 4½ to 6½. We came 4th overall. Well played everyone! Ava Humble (6W) NEWSPAPERS NEEDED, PLEASE! If you have any old newspapers at home that you no longer require, please could you hand them in at the School Office and they will be put to good use during art lessons. Thank you. Mrs McCulloch MANY HAPPY RETURNS!..to Krish Nayyar, Klara Young, William Hutchinson, Beth Hill, Ravi Grellscheid, Zuhair Abdullah and Madeline Watt who all celebrated their birthday this week. Miss Noble, Miss Gravely & Mrs Evans
4 PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION WINNERS Thank you so much for all the photo entries received this year. I have been truly amazed by the pupils talents behind the lens. Katy Read, Year 9 photography expert, who judged the competition for us this year found the decision incredibly difficult and spent over an hour and a half picking the winning entries. Do not dismay if your photo wasn't selected by Katy as you still have one more chance to impress! All Junior School pupils and staff took part in a 'People's Vote' last Tuesday where a large selection of highly commended photos which didn't make the cut for Katy were displayed over lunchtime for everyone to admire. The results of the People s Vote will be revealed in Monday s whole school Assembly. With great excitement, Mrs Wall came to talk to me on Monday to tell me Countryfile has just launched a photography competition for its 2019 calendar. I strongly believe many of the photography entries I received are worthy of entering. Please visit the following website to enter: Keep snapping everyone and I look forward to launching a new photography competition again next Summer. Mrs McCulloch Year 3 Year 4 1st Place: Tess Parr (3C) 2nd Place: Akshara Saranga (3N) 3rd Place: Fraser Hall (3S) 1st Place: Luke Cadamy (4W) 2nd Place: Sai Srikailash (4T) 3rd Place: Bobbie Doe (4W) Year 5 3rd Place: Nye Pritchard (5S) 1st Place: Hannah Cutler (5S) Year 6 2nd Place: Charlie Wilson (5W) Staff 1st Place: Zuhair Abdullah (6L) 2nd Place: Daniel Read (6L) 3rd Place: Holly Brooks (6L) 1st Place: Miss Gravely 2nd Place: Mr Craig 3rd Place: Miss A Noble
5 HMC CRICKET REPORT Last Friday, six very talented and committed Year 5 & 6 cricketers travelled to Bronte House to compete in the annual U11 HMC 6 aside competition. A combination of powerful stroke play, accurate bowling and energetic fielding allowed us to reach the quarter finals of the 'cup' competition, where we were beaten by a very strong and organised St Olave s outfit. The outstanding individual performance goes to Daniel Rajiv for his dominant batting performance against Bradford GS (20 not out). Mr Cragg BABY NEWS Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Cragg who welcomed their baby son, James Ray, into the world at 4.16am on 10th May, weighing 8lbs 9oz. Congratulations also to Mr and Mrs Towers whose baby son, Lucas, was born on 3rd June at 5.11am, weighing 8lbs 12 oz. Congratulations finally to Mr and Mrs Barlow whose baby daughter, Emmie Rose, arrived on 10th June at 9.14am, weighing 7lbs 8 oz. Enjoy your bundles of joy! YEARS 5 & 6 Hawaiian Party! RGS Fenwick Hall Wednesday 27 TH June pm 5:00pm Dress code: Beachwear! Tickets: 3 (includes snacks) HEADMASTER S MERITS Merits were awarded in assembly this week to: Suyash Dhull (Eldon), Hana Dennison (Horsley), Alyssa Mee (Stowell) & Krishen Kashyap (Horsley) - The Cuckoo Suyash Dhull (Eldon) & Hana Dennison (Horsley) - The Helter Skelter Daisy D Agostino (Collingwood) - The Grebe They found out that the cuckoo was thought to be a silly bird because it doesn t know how to build a nest, lays its eggs in other nests all over the place (another sign of being foolish!) and its sound is monotonous and boring. We now know it to be a skilfully selective bird that mimics the colour of other birds eggs. It is rather clever, not silly. Interestingly, in the USA an early TV advert had the sales pitch, He s gone cuckoo for sugar puffs! And so, in the States, to be cuckoo means to be wildly excited with enthusiasm. A rather different view of being cuckoo. Our researching Meriteers also discovered that to go helter-skelter comes from an old English expression for being confused and acting with disorderly haste. So it was natural to name the funfair ride with such a name because that s what happens to its riders as they spiral rapidly back down to ground level. Mr Craig
6 Donate Your Boots And Trainers to Africa! One of our Junior School families is collecting football boots for children living in the poorest areas of Uganda. Please donate any football (or hockey) boots you are growing out of, or have found forgotten at the back of the cupboard, and put them into the marked collection boxes in Lambton and Brandling House. Then Suubi Africa will ship them directly to Wubalensi village in Uganda. These children live in extreme poverty, most have no shoes at all, but having the chance to play football in your boots will bring a huge smile to their faces! There is already talk in the surrounding villages of setting up a football league. For more information see or Suubi Africa UK on Facebook, or Anne Bonner (3S). At the end of term, children will also have the chance to donate any unwanted school shoes, after the final assembly. These shoes will protect the children from diseases they pick up by walking bare foot.
