1 RGS Junior School Bulletin Friday 30th November 2018 Autumn Term: Volume 12 CHESS NEWS The Ponteland individual chess tournament took place on Saturday 17th November. Massive congratulations to Pranav C (3N) who won the U9 section with a perfect score of 6/6. Well done to Gabriel B (3N) who scored 3.5/6. Due to a lack of numbers, the U11 section was incorporated into the Senior School section. Craig L (5S) scored 4/6 and was the joint U11 champion. Well done! Henry R (5S) scored 3.5, and both Lyege P (5B) and Naman B (5B) finished on 3. Please note that the last Chess Club of the term will be on Friday 7th December, as I am going to a tournament in London. Mr Eggleston Tremendous Tour Guides! A BIG thank you to Charlie W (6M), Eleanor I (6M), Grace S-G (6L), Nomin U (6L), Anish G (6L), Nye P (6L), Nicholas L (6M), Sophia A (6M), Charlie M (6L), Tanish K (6L), Alesha A (5S), Ben C (5S), Toyah B (6W), Oliver C (6W), Krishnan B (6W) and Krishen K (6W), Sam N (6W), Arish S (6W), Maanvi M (5B) and Misheel M (5B) who all acted as excellent tour guides recently. Mr Miller MANY HAPPY RETURNS..to Ellie M (3N), Freya W (3C), Alice D (4C), Aaron N (4W), Tanish K (6L) and Julian S (6W) who all celebrated their birthday this week. Miss Noble, Mrs Evans & Miss Gravely MORE CHESS NEWS! Yichen H (6W) has been away from school for 2 weeks, competing in the World Junior Chess Championship, U12 section in Santiago, Spain. Unfortunately he missed his flight on the way there, due to an excessively long security queue. This meant he had to stay at the airport overnight without food, and missed his first game, and was given 0 for it. He then did incredibly well, scoring 7.5 points from his next 8 games to leave him half a point off the lead, with 2 rounds to go. The wins in rounds 7 to 9 were fantastic, as he was a massive underdog in each game. The round 7 opponent has a similar chess rating to mine, and the round 8 and 9 opponents were lower rated than me, but not massively! In the tenth round, Yichen was playing the top seed. The position was even for the first 3 hours, but sadly he made a mistake in the end game, and lost. A win in the last round could have given him a silver or bronze medal, but sadly he also lost this, to finish in 15 th place with 7.5/11, or 7.5/10 out of the games he played. It was still a fantastic success, as his international chess rating has increased to 2157, which means he is now higher rated than our best chess players in the Senior School! Mr Eggleston London Trip: 2 nd Payment Just a reminder that the second payment of 100 for the Year 6 London Trip is due to be paid through ParentPay by Tuesday 4 th December. Many thanks. The competition was really tough. Tyesha (height 141 cm) was the shortest one in the group but she fought valiantly and made everyone very proud. She lost the final round with 3-1 votes (4 judges). Well done, Tyesha! Maths is such a kahoot in Class 6L! Mr Lloyd Y6 County & Regional Hockey Tournaments On Tuesday 20th November, the Y6 hockey A team qualified for the regional Hockey tournament in spectacular style, winning all their games without conceding a goal. Playing in some horrendous weather, wind, rain and hail, the girls battled through each game tremendously and stayed positive the whole time! Well done, girls! Miss Sunderland On Friday 23rd November, we went to Barnard Castle to take part in the Regionals. We played extremely well and drew with the unbeaten team. We came third overall but only the top two teams qualified. We won 2 games, lost 2 games and drew 1 game. As this was a regional semi-final, the opposition was strong, with some impressive play in our last match, we certainly showed what we are capable of. Well done to Beth H, Ayesha P, Alice W, Tabitha A, Tanvi G, Felicity M, Hannah C and Megha T. And thank you to Alice for her tasty cupcakes! Elena B (6M)
