Sponsors UQAFC The UQAFC would like to thank its major sponsors for the season: Volunteers A huge thank you must go to all the volunteers who made the UQAFC tick in. We rely on the work that these people put in the club and are sincerely grateful for the time and commitment they have shown. Most of our coaches and all of our managers fill those roles on a purely volunteer basis. These are extremely time-consuming roles which are critical to allowing our club to function. Thank you to Darren Pfeiffer, Phil Lovett and Dave Macciocca (QAFL Seniors), Josh Hanek and Ray Foy (QAFL Reserves), Peter Rosengren (QAFA(B)), Brenton Crilly and Lindsay Collison (Colts), Michael Swann, Sharni Webb and Sinead Hastie (QWAFL), Jess Wiggan and Tom Molloy (QWAFA). A lot of people put their hands up to help in various roles at various times throughout the season, but particular thanks must go to a couple of regular contributors. Chris Burgess and Ben Coombs tirelessly ran messages for our QAFL squads all season. Our canteen was expertly managed by Suzanne Boyle and Mandy Philp, whose friendly faces welcomed visitors to Oval 7 every Saturday. Thank you all! 1

President s Report Peter Herring The club has evolved rapidly from the three team, Division 2 level participant that we presented in In just a handful of years, the club is now playing elite QAFL football, has a highly regarded QAFA outfit, fields an exciting and talented Colts group and, in the blink of an eye, has established an elite Ladies program boasting Queensland representatives and prospective AFL draftees. With the planned total re-development of Oval 2 on campus to be dedicated to the AFL game, now more than ever we need the wider club, every player past and present and every supporter to get behind the UQAFC. AFLQ have overseen strong growth in participation at all levels of AFL across the state. The club has benefited from their desire to see us compete at the highest level, seeing a bright future for the club with UQ a traditional focus of elite athletic performance. Their support of the club's entry into the QAFL league, the QWAFL competition and with the planned redevelopment of Oval 2 is greatly appreciated. A specific fundraising account has been established with UQ Advancement to receive donations for the development. Please visit UQ Giving to make your contribution to ensure our place on campus as a premier sporting club endures. After a second year at QAFL and also QWAFL level, the club has progressed tremendously on field and, to be fair, is struggling to keep up to support such progress. The QAFL squad this year were led by first year playing coach Darren Pfeiffer and his very capable playing assistant Phil Lovett. With the assistance of Daniel Archer, Tim McKinley, Josh Hanek and Travis Warren, the group were recognised by all the other QAFL clubs as having made excellent progress during both at Senior and Reserves level. 2

Despite a tough start to the first half of the season, It is testimony to the leadership of this group that through the last 6 weeks of the competition, the club registered solid wins against Sandgate and Broadbeach and led Morningside and Labrador after half time. It would have been easy for the group to surrender yet the entire squad enjoyed their time together, trained hard until the very last session and finished the year strongly. Things haven't changed until you win and now with wins occurring on a more regular basis, the 2016 season is an exciting prospect. Darren Pfeiffer leaves us after a single season with so much in prospect. Congratulations are absolutely warranted based on an impressive first year as coach and achieving membership of the QAFL Team of the Year honours. We wish him every success with his future endeavours, confident that even if he has been a Blue or from Port, a Shark or a Bomber for only a brief period, he will now be a Red Lion forever. The only team to play finals this year were the Colts and deservedly so. In a season where the Colts comp was split into regional leagues (as opposed to a dedicated QAFL Colts competition) and the Colts returned fulltime to the care of the UQAFC, Brenton Crilly, ably assisted by Lindsay Collison steered our lightest and brightest to the pointy end of the season. The Colts program has blossomed under Crilly's leadership and we thank him for his contribution to the future playing talent of the club. Jono Macanawai had a fantastic year for the club and was rewarded with the league s Best and Fairest, a tremendous achievement. 3

Michael Swann and Sinead Hastie have conceived, created and delivered the ladies program at the UQAFC. Both have tirelessly recruited, coached, managed, administered and played to ensure the UQAFC is successful. At QWAFL level, the team has progressed dramatically from its inception in 2013 with the QWAFA group stepping up when required to fill any gaps in the senior ranks. Our Ladies program is highly regarded with opposition clubs routinely recommending new players explore UQAFC as a playing option. As this part of the AFL landscape continues to win support at the highest level, the UQAFC is well placed to attract the female athletes arriving at UQ to our game to be part of an exciting and enjoyable club. Congratulations to Breanna Koenen for her sensational year, winning selection in the Queensland team and receiving a Half Blue from the University. Looking forward the club celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2016 and there is much to celebrate. From it's humble origins in 1956, the vision of some determined AFL types a long way from home to the elite squads that represent the UQAFC today, the club endures as an amateur club full of professionals, aspiring to upset the professionals in a very amateur way. Most importantly, it is still very much a place where shared experiences based on respect and a purely amateur ethos, both on and off the field, allow Red Lions young and old to forge life long friendships. There is much work to do - challenging seasons on field ahead, state of the art facilities to develop, bills to pay! It has been an honour to represent the club again this year and thanks to Pete Rosengren and the committee for their ongoing support. 4

Financial Report UQAFC Financially the club continues to struggle to keep up with the costs of offering our members such premier sporting experiences. With AFL league participation fees over $60,000 per annum for the teams we field and the increasing costs of equipment, medical services to the playing groups and first rate coaching and player development, funding the club's day to day activities are a constant challenge. Add to these expenses ground hire of over $30,000 a year charged to us by UQ Sport and it becomes even more difficult. Thankfully, long term supporters like the Norman Hotel and ICL (Aust) Pty Ltd, as well as other sponsors in kind and the loyal playing group who pay some of the highest fees on campus help us defray these costs however without our share of any of the student services fees and a huge annual UQ Sport bill, the financial future of the club remains uncertain if we continue to maintain our place in the Queensland AFL hierarchy. Description Amount Income Membership Fees $63, Sponsorship & Grants $56, Fundraising Activities $56, Total income $176, Expenditure AFLQ Fees $77, Facilities Hire $44, Physiotherapy $25, Equipment $24, Coach & Player Recruitment $14, Total expenditure $186, ANNUAL TOTAL - $10,

Colts Brenton Crilly UQAFC Colts finished the season going down to Maroochydore in the Preliminary Final after winning comfortably against Wilston Grange in the first week of the finals. The season will be remembered as an improvement year for the Colts. The standard of competition lifted a gear and so too did the young bucks at the UQAFC. From round one until the final siren in the prelim, the boys gave it their all, and it showed with consistent performances week in week out. Jono Macanawai backed up his 2014 season with another best and fairest ahead of Ben Glover and Sam Hodgson. Jono s ability to win the 50/50 ball and clean disposals saw him also take out the AFLQ Colts North Best and Fairest. A true testament to a humble and hard working young man. The seniors are looking forward to seeing what he has to offer next year. Other awards went to Nick Rosen leading goal kicker, Dylan D Roza most improved and crowd favourite Zandar Petrovic Coaches award. The majority of Colts will be available again for season 2016 with a handful already asking about off-season plans. There will be a few new individuals that have made their intentions known to play for the UQAFC Colts in With end of year exams kicking off in a few weeks, many of the boys are focused on studies and are expected to make an appearance to preseason earlier than in previous years as there is unfinished business to attend to in If you or anyone you know is interested in joining the UQAFC at the competitive Colts level in 2016, please contact Brenton on POS TEAM P W L D B F A % PTS 1 Aspley Maroochydore University of Queensland Wilston Grange Morningside Sandgate Mayne Redland Coorparoo Colts North League Medal Winner: Jono Macanawai 14

QWAFA Jessica Wiggan After only entering the competition in 2014, the UQAFC s QWAFA team has improved immensely over the past couple of seasons and will, no doubt, be a force to be reckoned within the coming years. The principle aim of the QWAFA competition is to encourage women to get involved with AFL and to gently ease them into the sport. As a result, the emphasis this season has been on creating an environment where the QWAFA ladies can really develop their skills and have a lot of fun playing the sport. As with any development side, the results this year have, at times, been inconsistent as we struggled to field a consistent side week-to-week. Despite this, the ladies managed to rally for 4 very impressive wins, including nail-biting 2-point and 1- point wins against Bond University and Jindalee respectively. It would be remiss not to mention the improvements made across the squad as the season progressed. All of the senior players in the side showed great commitment to not only improving their own games, but also to helping POS TEAM P W L D F A % PTS their less experienced 1 Moreton Bay teammates do so as well. 2 Zillmere Eagles Special mentions must go to Hannah Curran, Shannon 3 Bond University McCartney and Rebecca 4 Jindalee Barnes, all of whom demonstrated phenomenal 5 University of Queensland dedication and improvement 6 Burleigh throughout our pre-season and who, as a result, ended up regularly playing QWAFL games throughout the year. A number of other girls from the QWAFA group were also rewarded for their hard work with a game at QWAFL level when the opportunity arose. Particular mentions should also go to Harriet Yeates - a returning player, emergent QWAFA stalwart and deserving best-and-fairest winner for - and Ellen Hutchinson, who came into the side this year, never having played the game, and came away from her first season as the QWAFA Most Improved Player. A big thank-you to our captain Felicity Angliss, who consistently led from the front both on and off the field, to the remainder of the QWAFA leadership group (Kate Harvey, Ally Priest-Tasker & Shannon McCartney), to Tom Molloy for being part assistant coach/part club umpire, to Michael Swann for always being available to offer advice when needed, and to all the boys and girls around the club who came down to lend a hand or simply cheer enthusiastically from the sidelines. 16

QWAFL Michael Swann The UQAFC Ladies program has rapidly grown to stand on the verge of becoming a powerhouse of female football in Queensland. Just three years ago a number of committed individuals threw their time into pulling together a very social team that quickly earned a reputation as a fantastic group of girls who simply love playing football together. Each year since, that group has improved beyond belief slowly adding more skill and experience as they have learned the game. The QWAFL league steps up a notch in competitiveness and professionalism every season, but the Red Lionesses have matched that development and then also significantly closed the gap to the rest of the competition. The only thing really holding us back this year was an inability to put a full-strength side on the field. Nonetheless, we were able to register a few big wins and seriously scare some of the top sides. Another pre-season under our belts and just a little lift in commitment will have us challenging for premierships in both grades in the very near future. saw us welcome some very skilful first-year students who will become the foundation of a very successful side in years to come. Many girls transitioned from other sports to notch up their second or third years in the game, rising through our QWAFA ranks to become regular contributors at State League level. And at the top end we are blessed to have a handful of very experienced, but still very young, leaders teaching their newer team-mates. A particular mention must go to Breanna Koenen for a tremendous year of football at both club and State level. A thoroughly deserving club best-and-fairest winner, Bre is as committed to her football as they come and lives and breathes being a part of the UQAFC. Annie Shewring and Marley Beaven should be congratulated for amazing debut seasons, coming 2 nd and 3 rd in our B&F, with the latter also winning the league s Rising Star award. A big-thank you to our captain Sharni Webb, who stood up a number of times to pull the group together and pass on her experience as a playing assistant-coach, to the remainder of our leadership group (Jess Wiggan, Hannah Curran, Marnie McGorm & Belle Baldock), to Tom Beagle Molloy for always being around to assist, to Sinead Hastie for managing the side, and to all the boys who came down to lend a hand or support from the sidelines. 23 QAFA(B) David Campbell was always going to be a year of adjustment, with the club opting to field only one team across the QAFA divisions. This shift saw a number of players from our group push up at QAFL level. Despite these changes the team finished in 7 th place, only two wins away from a finals spot. We competed against some genuine senior outfits, many with ex-qafl players. Our prospects are bright at QAFA(B) level, however, with many current players committing to 2016 and a number of new arrivals wanting to give AFL a crack. For the QAFA B lads, the season was a mix of results. Our surplus of numbers assisted the Ipswich Eagles under a loose joint venture. Constant changes to UQ line-ups led to rather inconsistent performances. Some highlights, however, came in a number of solid victories and only minor losses to finals contender Zillmere (10 points) and undefeated premiers, Kedron (10 points). These show what UQ are capable of in the coming years. Under the guidance of Peter Rosengren (Coach, Manager. Everything!) and Gareth Wilkinson (Assistant Coach) the boys POS TEAM P W L D B F A % PTS continued to develop and enjoy the game. 25 QAFL Reserves Josh Hanek UQAFC After a baptism of fire in joining the highest level of community football in Queensland in 2014 the Red Lion Reserves consolidated their strong improvement throughout. In the previous season a young, inexperienced and immensely raw talented side was subject to a couple of hundred point hidings and five narrow losses under a 12 point margin. With only two wins for the 2014 season, the first coming in round 12 and the second in the last round of the season, it would be a true test of character and spirit for these young charges to stick together and cement a foundation for success with a full pre-season of fitness and to develop an attitude to overhaul the choking culture in the clutch games. The boys came out of their corner swinging hard in the first five rounds to be four wins from five games with only the one loss to local power club Morningside. A top three ladder spot was held onto for a couple of weeks until the inevitable University holiday break, injuries and bad luck took its toll. Eight losses in a row, including a two point heartbreaker to the previously without a win Western Magpies and a seven point stinker to Palm Beach Currumbin both at home, cost the Ressies dearly in their first realistic run to a QAFL finals series. Despite these disappointments the young squad responded to the Red Lion Spirit after some exceptional role modelling of club culture, stirring speeches and football ferociousness from our elder statesmen Jimmy Day, Disco Doherty, Big TC Kleverlaan, Reyne Hondow, Tommy Gherman and Captain Courageous Nick Mayes. The younger players lifted both individually and as a unit with 3 wins from the five last games including a convincing win over Broadbeach, who had us beaten by 220 points last season, and an execution of revenge on a heavily NEAFL and QAFL stacked Western Magpies Reserves side in the last round. The Red Lions Ressies only missed finals by a game and a half and were leapfrogged by sides that were only better than them on certain days. In the ten team roster there were only three teams that beat the Red Lions Reserves and the margin against one of the Grand Finalists was only four goals in both encounters during the home and away regular season. The Red Lion Reserves finished in sixth position with seven wins POS TEAM P W L D F A % PTS and eleven losses. 1 Labrador Morningside Wilston Grange Surfers Paradise Mt Gravatt University of Queensland Western Magpies Broadbeach Palm Beach Currumbin Sandgate The most satisfying success of the season was not so much the improvements in home and away wins but more so in the amount of young players that made their Senior Debut after transitioning through the Reserves Programme. This situation sits us in fine form for future seasons as we continue to grow our football professionalism and winning culture. 22

QAFL Seniors Darren Pfeiffer The season was a year of transition and learning for the QAFL group in understanding what is required to be a strong team in this competition. After an up and down start the season, and an injury-riddled middle third, the playing group found some consistency and showed what our capabilities are in the last 6 games of the year. The journey started Pre-Christmas with us getting back to basics and the players getting to know the new coaching group of myself, Philip Lovett and Tim Mackinley. The tempo picked up after the break with players keen to get fit and learn a more disciplined style of play. The players really started to gel at the Pre-Season Camp down at Tallebudgera which was not only a chance to improve on fitness and skills, but also bonding and getting to know one another on and off the track. The group performed well in the Pre-Seaon Comp, albeit against clubs from other divisions. However the players learnt what was required when going down to Mayne in the final at Yeronga. An admirable performance again Mt Gravatt in Round 1 and an exciting victory again Surfers the following week gave the players confidence that the job can be done. However from here, after a big loss to Morningside, the group struggled with consistency within games and from week to week. Captain Al Carlson was a pillar down back in this period along with Ross Wilkinson and Dustin Tebbutt providing run through the midfield. POS TEAM P W L D F A % PTS 1 Labrador Western Magpies Wilston Grange Morningside Broadbeach Palm Beach Currumbin Mt Gravatt University of Queensland Sandgate Surfers Paradise

The hurdles continued into the middle third of the season with constant injuries, NEAFL & state representation as well as players being unavailable due to holidays. This last point hurt both grades in stability going from game to game and an area that especially the playing group can rectify in moving the club towards the QAFL level. This gave us the opportunity to blood some games into young players like Jono Macanawai, Harry Marshall, David Yabsley and Luca Mason with each showing their ability at the senior grade. The group stuck fat with high training numbers during this period and a close loss to Surfers rejuvenating the group. After a tough tussle with Morningside just before the last bye, the players looked forward to showing their improvement in the last chunk of the season. With some returning players such as Nicholas Kent, Philip Lovett, Rick Dolphin, Tom Crameri and the rapid improvement from ruckman Paddy O'Shaughnessy, we got over the line with a grinding win against Sandgate on Old Boys Day at Oval 7. A tough defeat to Wilston Grange in an open game the following week showed the rest of the competition that the players can match it consistently with all teams. The next week, a victory against Broadbeach was an example of the players implementing the structures that the coaching staff had put in front of them. We let one slip again eventual premiers Labrador showing what it takes to be at the top despite Harry Milford delivering a bag of 6. A disappointing effort in the last game was an unfortunate ending to a fantastic finish to the season. Congratulations to Brodie Tebbutt and George Hannaford with finishing in the top 3 for the Best and Fairest. These 2 players were a big reason for our improvement over the last 6 weeks of the season. Well done to Harry Milford and Luca Mason on being nominated for the league Rising Star award. I would like to thank Phil Lovett, Tim Mackinley, Travis Warren and Chris Burgess for their week to week support and on game days. The biggest thank you from the coaching staff, and especially the playing group, goes to Dave Macciocca. Dave was there at every training and game making sure that everything was looked after for the players and the coaches. I know the boys loved having Dave around and look forward to seeing him down at Oval 7 this season 25

Pre-Season Camp Close to 90 guys and girls from the UQAFC embarked on a weekend of training and team-bonding at the Tallebudgera Sports & Recreation Centre early on in February. Lots of running and core strength was the order of the day on a huge Saturday, with everyone getting together for drinks at the surf club afterward. Each of the UQAFC groups were able to get a lot out of the weekend away, with all heading home sore from throwing everything at the sessions. The Tallebudgera Pre-Season camp has been a staple of the club s preseason preparation over the past couple years. All are looking forward to heading back in 2016 to kick-start the upcoming campaign. 27

Red Lions Gala Ball Hillstone St Lucia hosted Red Lions young and old on 9 May for the annual UQAFC Gala Ball. Players, partners, coaches, administrators, friends and family all gathered in the magnificent grand ball-room for a great night celebrating the club we all love. Nick Davis and Bec Barnes were fantastic MC s for the evening guiding us through the formalities and into the fun. President Peter Herring welcomed the revellers before each of the current club coaches provided a quick summary of each team s season to date. The crowd was keen for a good time and spent most of the night either taking silly snaps in the photobooth or cutting shapes on the dancefloor to a fantastic live band led by former-player Nick Foxcroft. Millie Read teed up a bus, a venue and drink special for the kids to kick on to and not much is remembered from there! A special thanks to Lauren Mengotti from Hillstone for overseeing the event from the host s end, and to Sinead Hastie (our secretary/social coordinator) who poured hours into organising such large-scale event. All attendees are biding their time for an even bigger and better ball next year as we celebrate the club s 60th anniversary. 28

Old Boys Day A different approach was taken to this year s annual Old Boys Day, with former players invited to book a table at the Norman Hotel to reminisce on their glory days. From there the crowd piled into busses over to Oval 7 to cheer on the current crop of Red Lions. In a remarkable outcome for the club, the UQAFC won five out of five matches in the one weekend for the first time ever! The QAFL Seniors impressed the assembled alumni with a smart win over Sandgate with earlier wins to the Reserves and Colts getting the day off to a flier. Thanks to all the past players who came along, we look forward to seeing you again next year. 30

Find A Red Lion Campaign UQAFC The UQAFC is on the hunt for our past-players! We have launched a Find a Red Lion Campaign this year, designed to track down as many former Red Lions as possible to help re-engage our extensive Old Boys network with the club s current activities. With tremendous growth over the past few seasons, and massive plans on the horizon (which will soon see us develop a new purpose-built AFL facility - not seen on campus since the days of the famous Rec Centre ), we need our Old Boys support now more than ever. Whether that s lending your vocal support at a home game every now and then, contributing financially to our exciting infrastructure projects, assisting the current crop of Red Lions with career opportunities, or simply keeping an eye on the club s on-field results is up to you. But to stay in the loop, we need a list of our current and former members so that we can keep you up to date with what is happening around the club! A sincere thank-you to the 150+ members of the UQAFC community who have joined our database already. If you haven t already joined, or know someone else who might like to receive an update every month or two, jump on our website through the link below to add your name to the list: 31
