1 The Hartefeld National Weekly Update From Bill Brown s Blog for course conditions is Turf Grass Melting Pot Arriving at Hartefeld over a year ago and taking inventory, the turfgrass melting pot that exist across the property quickly became a top priority. This exists across the entire property, from greens and tees to fairways and native areas. The fairways particularly had a wide variety of turgrass species. These species were Perennial Ryegrass, Creeping Bentgrass, Poa annua and some Kentucky Bluegrass; the predominant species is Ryegrass. Managing a melting pot of turfgrass can be expensive, particularly managing a population of Bentgrass and Ryegrass in the same fairway. Each of these grasses have their own management nuances which doesn't make them favorable to populate the same turf stand. Poa annua being the easiest to control with an aggressive growth regulator program along with proper water management, we started there. We have had great success with our Poa erradication! The next step was Creeping Bentgrass. This was going to be a bit more difficult. Our IPM and BMP programs developed to manage towards the P. Rye is also favorable to bentgrass. In order to eradicate our bentgrass we need to use specific herbicides and we need to use them when the bentgrass would be under stress, summer time. Last week we made the first of three herbicide applications to eradicate the bentgrass. This herbicide also controls several broadleaf and annual weeds, crabgrass is an example. The pictures below are of 13 fairway. You can see the bentgrass has begun to decline after only 6 days. 13 and 17 fairways have the highest bentgrass populations, therefore will not visually be favorable, but playability will not be disrupted. We overseeded these fairways last fall and will continue to overseed the worst areas of bentgrass decline throughout this entire process. Close up of bentgrass decline from herbicide.

5 Hartefeld National will proudly be hosting the work and the artist, David Grafton on Thursday, July 16 th at 6 pm. We will feature the artist for a showing of his work at a complimentary cocktail and hors d œuvre reception. Samples of David s work will be hanging in the Founders Room hallway and other pieces will be featured the night of the reception including an original he is currently creating of the Hartefeld National course. Below is some information about this talented artist and a link to his website. I encourage you to visit his site at: and to come visit him and view his work at the reception in July. Maryland resident, David Grafton is truly elegant in several media. His contemporary art rendering of classical landscape subject matter creates images of universal appeal. Grafton has the insight to pull out the essence in the landscape so that it has its own sense of place. In addition to being accepted into 2008 and 2009 Plein Air Easton competitions, he has placed in private and corporate collections in over twenty-five states, England, Germany, Canada, and Norway. You can view and purchase David Grafton's current art works in his gallery, found in Easton Maryland. ARTIST S NOTES: I m a landscape painter. Like many of my contemporaries, past and present, I am constantly searching for the perfect painting. For me the physical act of painting has become the most important part. Certainly the end result is always something to look forward to, but I m most interested in the journey. Classes, Workshops and Symposiums are offered to the public. In addition, Mr. Grafton is now available for Murals and has also just completed a Mural for Carolina County Rehabilitation Center. Please contact the artist to schedule arrangements. Please enter and exit the fairways in areas that are not roped off. Ladies Open Play Tee times are set aside for the ladies on 9am, and again on Thursday evenings, 6pm. As a reminder most ladies playing in the open days gather at the Pub for a little food, beverage, and conversation after the round. So ladies if you would like to meet more members this is a perfect opportunity to do so. Hopefully this will encourage more women to come out and play together (even those working ). Tee-times will be given on a first come first serve basis sign ups will begin the day of

8 one half hour before the first tee-time. Hi Ladies, On Tuesday, July 14th Hartefeld National will be hosting a Delaware Women's Golf Association tournament. The format for the event is a 2 person team "Ryder Cup" Medley. The 2 person team will play 6 holes as a Scramble with 35% of the course handicap to the lower handicapped player and 15% of the course handicap to the higher handicapped player. The next 6 holes will be a Chapman Event with the lower handicapped player receiving 60% of their course handicap and the higher handicapped player receiving 40% of their course handicap. The last 6 holses will be a Better Ball of Partners with both players receiving 95% of their course handicap. I think it would be nice to have a good showing of Hartefeld players at the tournament. Their will be both gross and net prizes awarded (gift certificates to HNGC pro shop). The cost is $70 per person which includes carts and lunch after play. DWGA's gift certificates are usually very generous. You must be a member of DWGA to be eligible to play in the tournament. (You can go to the website for information about registering as a member.) As of now, I think there are two teams representing HNGC registered for the tournament. I have not registered yet. I work full time but am willing to take a day of vacation if anyone is interested in being my partner.
