She led all scorers with 18 points in the game and helped the Red Foxes erase an eight-point halftime deficit. Senior guard Erica Allenspach joined Yarde in double figures with 13 points on 6-for-12 shooting. Following Yarde s layup with 27.7 seconds remaining, Fairfield had two opportunities to win the game. Three-point attempts by Brittany MacFarlane and Katelyn Linney were off the mark. After Brandy Gang collected the rebound and was fouled, she missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Taryn Johnson took a desperation heave from half court as time expired. RANKED! For the fifth time in program history, Marist is ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll in the same week. After receiving votes in both polls since they won the Duel in the Desert Tournament in December, the Red Foxes cracked the top- 25 in the Associated Press and Coaches Polls on Monday and Tuesday respectively. In the Coaches Poll, Marist came in ahead of St. John s. The teams met in the season-opener for both squads on Nov. 12. Marist has been ranked as high as #20 in both polls once each. The Red Foxes have compiled a record of 15-2 when they are ranked in either of the top-25 polls. PLAYING SOUND DEFENSE In its last 11 games, Marist has not allowed more than 52 points to the opposition in the game and has held its foes under 20 points in the opening half in four of the last five games. Additionally, the Red Foxes have allowed fewer than 20 points in the first half in seven of the last 11 games and in seven conference games. During the stretch, Marist has set its season-low in points allowed twice - 34 points against Saint Peter s on Jan. 8 and 30 against Siena on Jan. 31. Over the last 11 games Marist has allowed 42.7 points per game. Since MAAC play began the Red Foxes have allowed 44.6 per outing. STREAKING TO THE TOP With its current 17-game winning streak, Marist has the second longest string of wins in the country. The Red Foxes trail #1 Baylor which has won its last 18 games. The stretch is the second longest streak in program history and surpassed a 16-game stretch in Erica Allenspach and Corielle Yarde have averaged 15.0 and 12.7 points respectively to lead the Red Foxes to 68.8 points per game. Allenspach is shooting 53.5 percent from the field (85-for-159) and 89.4 percent (59-for-66) from the free throw line. Brandy Gang has made 23 out of 24 free throw attempts. The Red Foxes have won their games by an average of 20.1 points per game and 12 of the 17 wins have been by at least 16 points. In the first half, Marist has outscored its opponents and average a halftime lead of 11.4 points per game. SAME STARTING FIVE EVERY NIGHT The Red Foxes are one of seven teams in the country to use the same starting lineup in all of their games this season. Brian Giorgis has used the combination of Elise Caron, Erica Allenspach and Corielle Yarde at the guards and Brandy Gang and Kate Oliver at the forwards. Of the teams who have used the same lineup every game this year, three are nationally ranked - #20/21 Miami, #21/24 Marquette and #25/24 Marist - and three are receiving votes in either the Coaches or Associated Press polls - Gonzaga, Iowa and Louisiana Tech. LEADING THE NATION, AND SPOTS IN THE TOP FIVE TURNOVERS PER GAME Marist leads the country in fewest turnovers per game, averaging just 10.9 giveaways per outing. The Red Foxes are ahead of second-place, Michigan by 2.3 turnovers per game. Marist has defeated Vermont (76-49), Villanova (71-60), Hartford (57-40), Loyola (59-43), Canisius (59-40), Niagara (95-48), Manhattan (75-52), Rider (70-41) and Fairfield (54-52). Eight of the nine wins have been by double digits. During the nine games, Marist has had three players average over 10 points per game. Corielle Yarde, Erica Allenspach and Brandy Gang account for 34.2 points per game. The Red Foxes average 68.4 points per game on the road. The group accounts for half of Marist s road scoring. Yarde leads the way with 13.0 points per game, Allenspach adds 11.1 and Gang contributes In addition, the Red Foxes have amassed an 14-1 record in games away from the McCann Center this season. Winners of its last 17, Marist s lone loss on the road this season came in the seasonopener against #14/16 St. John s in Manhattan, Kan. to open the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic. A LONG HEAD-TO-HEAD WINNING STREAK The Red Foxes have won the last 23 meetings between Marist and Iona dating back to the series. The string of wins ranks 14th actively among conference foes. The longest such streak in the country is held by Stanford who has defeated Washington State the last 51 times in Pacific 10 play. LAST TIME OUT VS. IONA - MARIST 73, IONA 43 - JANUARY 4, 2011 Marist opened the game on a 24-1 run and held the Gaels without a field goal for the first 12:29 of the contest. The Red Foxes won Four players posted double figures including seniors Erica Allenspach, and Élise Caron, and juniors Brandy Gang and Corielle Yarde who scored 15, 13, 12 and 11 points respectively. Marist scored the first 18 points of the game over a span of 9:26. During stretch Allenspach scored six points, Caron added five, senior Maria Laterza hit her only triple of the year and sophomore Kate Oliver and Gang each netted two points. MARIST-IONA - THE SERIES Since the season, when Marist became a Division I program, the Red Foxes have amassed a record of 26-9 against Iona in head-to-head meetings. Head Coach Brian Giorgis has never lost to his counterpart at Iona, Anthony Bozzella. Both coaches took over their respective programs at the same time, and in the 22 meetings between the two teams since, Giorgis is undefeated. The teams have met in the postseason in four out of the last five years. SCOUTING THE GAELS Iona stands at sixth in the MAAC standings with a record of 5-7 and 9-15 overall. The Gaels have played three overtimes in the last two games in losses to Fairfield at home and at Rider. After his first season in the league, Marist has never lost more than five games against members of the conference. Additionally, during the season, Marist became the first school to go 18-0 during the regular season since the league expanded to 10 teams in At the right see Marist s year-by-year record during conference games since the campaign. 56 AND COUNTING During regular season conference play, Marist has held at least a share of first place for the last 56 weeks. The Red Foxes have been atop the MAAC since Jan. 30, 2005 and remained there for the final five weeks of the campaign. Since that point in time, Marist has held at least a share of the top spot in the conference standings for all nine weeks of the conference season from through the first six reporting periods of the campaign. In the 56 consecutive weeks of MAAC play, Marist has compiled a record of DOUBLE VISION Sophomore Kate Oliver s first career double-double marked the third this season by a member of the Marist Red Foxes. Junior guard Corielle Yarde notched back-to-back double-doubles against Boston University and Louisville. Yarde finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds against the Terriers and 25 points and 10 boards against the Cardinals. Oliver completed the Siena game on Jan. 31 with 10 points and a career-high 10 boards. On the active roster, Oliver, Yarde and Erica Allenspach have all turned in double-doubles in their careers. Allenspach s came against Oklahoma State with 10 points and 10 rebounds last season. HOMETOWN HEROES In her first career collegiate game in her home state of Vermont, sophomore Kelsey Beynnon scored a career-high 10 points and set career-best numbers in six other statistical categories. Marist defeated Vermont at Patrick Gymnasium. Beynnon hit two three-point attempts and went 4-for-5 from the free throw line. She also added three rebounds, two assists and a steal against the Catamounts. Junior Corielle Yarde also put fourth an outstanding performance in front of her hometown fans as Marist defeated Villanova on Sunday, Nov. 28. Yarde scored 26 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the floor and netted an 11-for-12 mark from the free throw line. She went 10-for-10 from the line over the final 10:30 of the game to secure Marist s fourth win all-time against a Big East team. Yarde was named MAAC Player of the Week. Freshman Leanne Ockenden scored a career-high 11 points and shot a perfect 3-for-3 from distance in Marist s win at Niagara, near her hometown of Syracuse, N.Y. Ockenden has come off the bench in all 17 of Marist s games this year and averages over four points per game. A TEAM EFFORT... Marist holds the lead in the MAAC in 11 statistical categories. The Red Foxes lead in scoring offense, scoring margin, free throw percentage, field goal percentage, field goal percentage defense, rebounding margin, assists, turnover margin, assist-to-turnover-ratio, defensive rebounding, defensive rebound percentage and three-point field goals made. Senior Elise Caron ranks third in the MAAC in free throw percentage with a mark of 83.8 percent. Senior Erica Allenspach leads the conference field goal percentage with a mark of 51.3 percent. She also leads the league in free throw percentage with at a clip of 87.5 percent. Allenspach stands at fifth on the scoring list and averages 13.2 points per game Junior Corielle Yarde ranks third in field goal percentage and shoots at a clip of 47.4 percent from the floor. Sophomore Kate Oliver is tied for fifth in the MAAC in blocks averaging 1.1 per game. GIORGIS NO STRANGER TO WINNING STREAKS Under head coach Brian Giorgis the Red Foxes have put together a double-digit winning streak every year since the campaign. Of the 2,292 points scored by the Red Foxes last season, the team returns 1,267 points to the lineup a mark of 55.27% of the team s scoring output from a season ago. In addition to the 10 letter winners, Marist returns four starters in Erica Allenspach, Kristine Best, Kate Oliver and Corielle Yarde. CLIMBING THE RUNGS OF THE ALL-TIME LADDER Senior guard Erica Allenspach is ranked in the top-10 in program history in nine categories. She stands at sixth in points with 1,252 and passed Diesa Seidel at Fairfield on Feb. 6. Allenspach stands fourth in three pointers made (164), sixth in assists (334), eighth in steals (182) and ninth in free throws made (282). She is the programs all-time leader in three-point field goal percentage (.418) and stands eighth in field goal percentage (.469). PRESEASON PICKS For the fourth straight season, the Marist women s basketball team was the unanimous choice to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference as selected by the league s 10 head coaches. The Red Foxes were awarded 100 points in the poll. Marist had two players named to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team in Erica Allenspach and Corielle Yarde. Allenspach was named the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year. It was the fourth straight year a Marist player was named Preseason Player of the Year and fifth time in the last six seasons. Iona was picked to finish second, while Loyola and Fairfield rounded out the top four spots. MORE ON THE PRESEASON AWARD WINNERS Allenspach, who began the year 52 points from 1,000 in her career, was a First Team All-MAAC choice a season ago prior to and following the season. During the season, she averaged a careerhigh 12.9 points per game to go along with 4.4 rebounds per game and 59 steals, en route to a Second Team All-Met selection. She has been named to a Preseason All-MAAC Team in each of the last three seasons. Yarde was a Second Team All-MAAC selection as she set career-highs in 15 statistical categories a season ago. Additionally, she scored a career-high 32 points against Boston University on Dec. 12, She was twice named the MAAC Player of the Week and following her sophomore season, Yarde was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team. WELCOME TO THE 1,000-POINT CLUB ERICA Senior guard Erica Allenspach became the 17th player in Marist women s basketball history to score 1,000 career points and second straight guard to accomplish the feat. Julianne Viani was the last player to score her 1,000th point with the program. She eclipsed the mark on Nov. 23, 2008 in a win over Harvard at the McCann Center. On Dec. 11 Allenspach was presented with a ball commemorating her 1,000th career point prior to tip-off between Marist and Boston University. Allenspach has been with the team for the three previous 1,000 point scorers as well. Meg Dahlman, Rachele Fitz and Viani all joined the 1,000-point club with Allenspach as a teammate. IT FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME With its win over Nebraska on Dec. 19, Marist defeated a nationally-ranked opponent during the regular season for the first time in program history. Nebraska was ranked #21 in the ESPN/ USA Today Coaches Poll. Prior to the win over the Cornhuskers, the Red Foxes dropped 13 in a row to ranked foes. The Red Foxes are now 1-13 during the regular season when they face a ranked foe. Additionally, Nebraska is the only team Marist has ever beaten from the Big XII. Giorgis became just the second head coach in Marist basketball history to win 200 games at Marist, as Dave Magarity reached the milestone with the men s program during the season. Magarity used 402 games at Marist to eclipse the mark, while Giorgis accomplished the feat in just 264 games. Entering the season with a mark of , he ranked 11th among active coaches with a winning percentage of.758. THE NEWEST ADDITION - NINA TRIPLO On April 25, 2010, Nina Triplo became the newest member of the Marist women s basketball team through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. The Red Foxes welcomed Nina Triplo to the family at Marist s Historic Cornell Boathouse with an adoption ceremony. Members of the foundation were on hand including the founder Denis Murphy. Nina was born on Aug. 5, 1998 and resides in Stone Ridge, N.Y. with her parents Gina and Joseph. In 2007, Nina was diagnosed with pilocytic astrocytoma, a form of benign brain tumor. On Saturday, Dec. 11, Nina received her official team jersey in a special pregame ceremony. FREQUENT FLYERS During the first 12 games of the schedule, all non-conference games, the Marist women s basketball team logged over 13,300 miles of travel. The Red Foxes opened the season with five consecutive away games at Kansas State, Vermont and Villanova. After its home opener against St. Bonaventure on Dec. 4, Marist made its shortest road trip of the nonconference season to Hartford. On Dec Marist flew to Las Vegas, Nev. for the Duel in the Desert tournament. TOP 5 PLAYER AT THE TOURNEY Gang was one of five players named to the 2010 Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team. Marist finished in third place at the season-opening tournament hosted by Kansas State. For the weekend, Gang tied for the team lead in scoring and averaged 12.5 points. Allenspach also averaged 12.5 points per game. Gang led the team in rebounds with 6.5 per game including eight against Grambling State on Saturday. For the weekend she shot 9-for-19 (.474) from the field and 3-for-6 from three-point range. Joining Gang on the all-tournament team were Jalena Childs (MVP) and Mariah White of Kansas State and Nadirah McKenith and Da Shena Stevens of St. John s. THE FOUR LEADERS Of the 10 players that return to the Red Foxes this season, Marist head coach Brian Giorgis has named four captains this season - seniors Erica Allenspach, Elise Caron and Maria Laterza and junior Corielle Yarde. A pre-season and post-season First Team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) choice during her junior season, Allenspach was thrust into a starting role in just her 13th collegiate game, and has started all 111 games she has played in since. The stretch began on Dec. 22, 2007 at Albany. Allenspach was a two-time MAAC All-Tournament team choice in 2009 and Away from the MAAC, Allenspach has also been honored by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association as a Second Team choice in Yarde posted new career highs in 11 statistical categories during her breakout sophomore season, including a double-double at Boston University behind 32 points and 13 rebounds on Dec. 12. She was named Second Team All-MAAC at the end of the season, after she was named MAAC Player of the Week twice in five weeks from Dec. 14-Jan. 11. Yarde was named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team. Caron also returns to the Marist backcourt after she appeared in all 34 games as a junior. A MAAC All- Academic Team choice in , Caron has been known for her defensive commitment and intensity as she has accumulated 90 career steals. The most experienced member of the post players is Laterza who is back for her senior season. This week the Red Foxes moved up one spots to #4 in the top-25 on Feb. 8. The mid-major poll on CollegeInsider.com consists of teams from the America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Great West, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast. MAAC WOMEN S FINAL GOES NATIONAL The 2011 MAAC Women s Basketball Championship Game, scheduled for Monday, March 7 at 1:00 p.m., will be broadcast nationally for the first time on ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network. The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. will host the 2011 MAAC Basketball Championships from March 3-7. Since 1991, when the men s and women s championships were moved to the same site, the women s championship game has been played on Sunday during the MAAC Basketball Championships. The format change, which gives the women s championship game participants a day off following the semifinals, was approved by the MAAC Council of Presidents in June. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Marist welcomes five new players to the roster this season: Kristina Danella, Casey Dulin, Suzzette Garnett, Emma O Connor and Leanne Ockenden. Danella is a transfer from the University of Massachusetts who will sit out during the season due to NCAA transfer rules. Dulin was the female all-time leading scorer in Milford with 1,639 points. During her senior season she averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists per game. As a senior she was nominated to the McDonald s All-American Team. Garnett joined the team as a walk-on. She played four years of high school basketball at the School of Business for Young Women in the Bronx. O Connor averaged 18 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and four blocks per game during her senior year at Kellenberg Memorial High School. She was named the Nassau County Player of the Year following her senior season, and was named to the All-Long Island First Team. Ockenden averaged 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists per game during her senior year at Christian Brothers Academy. She was the OHSL Player of the Year in 2008 and was an All-State Class AA selection as well. Ockenden set an OHSL record with 72 three-pointers in a season twice. 13 MARIST WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES (GAME 24 - AT IONA) HEAD COACH BRIAN GIORGIS NINTH SEASON SUNY CORTLAND, 1977 CAREER RECORD: FOUR-TIME MAAC COACH OF THE YEAR Brian Giorgis is in his ninth season as head coach of the Marist women s basketball team, and is the program s all-time leader in wins. His career record stands at and his.758 winning percentage is 10th best among active Division I coaches. In his first eight seasons in Poughkeepsie, Giorgis has been named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times - twice outright ( , ), and a share of the award on two other occasions ( , ). Giorgis, a 2010 inductee into the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, had led the program to national prominence in his first eight seasons. Last season, the Red Foxes reached their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament and their sixth in seven years. Marist also won its seventh consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title with a 15-3 mark in the MAAC, and finished two games ahead of the second-place team, Iona. Beyond his success on the floor, Giorgis has also led his program to participate in a number of initiatives within the basketball and local communities. Since taking over the program in , the Red Foxes have helped to raise funds for a number of different causes. The team has volunteered with the Special Olympics and Kids Day Out, a one-day clinic sponsored by to benefit students with disabilities. Additionally, the Red Foxes have worked with the WBCA in its efforts to promote breast cancer awareness with an annual Pink Zone contest. The women s basketball program also works with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which attempts to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. The Red Foxes adopted Nina Triplo in April The Red Foxes went 29-4 in with a 16-2 mark in conference. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the Associated Press Top 25 that season as well, and was ranked for three weeks. For his efforts, Giorgis was named the Maggie Dixon Coach of the Year by the Met Basketball Writers Association. In , the Red Foxes set a new program record with 32 wins. Marist posted an 18-0 record in the MAAC, the first team to do so since the conference expanded to 10 teams, and won its fifth consecutive regular season title. The Red Foxes also earned their first in-season ranking in when the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll ranked them 25th on Feb. 12. Marist was ranked as high as 20th in the poll by the end of the regular season. A record 21-game winning streak propelled Marist to its fourth MAAC Tournament title and a seventh-seed in the New Orleans Region of the NCAA Tournament. Marist won its first round NCAA Tournament game for the second straight season, using a 39-7 run over the last 14:13 of the game to defeat 10th-seeded DePaul The Red Foxes took a 22-game winning streak, the nation s longest at the time, into their second round game against LSU. While Marist did fall to the Tigers, the Red Foxes showed they can hang with the nation s elite teams for a second straight season. Giorgis earned two accolades for his work during the season. He was named MAAC Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time in six seasons that he earned at least a share of the award. The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association also honored Giorgis by naming him and C. Vivian Stringer of Rutgers the Maggie Dixon Co-Coaches of the Year. Giorgis and the Red Foxes enjoyed an historic season and its third trip to the NCAA Tournament in He led the Red Foxes to their first ever win in the NCAA Tournament, a upset of fourth-seeded Ohio State. The win over MTSU marked the first time a MAAC program, men s or womens, reached the Sweet 16 in conference history. 14 MARIST WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES (GAME 24 - AT IONA) 14 In , Giorgis led Marist to a then program-best 23 triumphs and its second trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Red Foxes embarked on winning streaks of seven and 12 games as they claimed at least a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season crown for the third straight season. In , Giorgis guided Marist to a 22-win season, which included a then program-record 16-game winning streak. After starting the MAAC season 0-3, the Red Foxes closed it with 15 consecutive triumphs to earn the top seed in the MAAC Tournament for the first time. The season was historical, as it was the first time the Red Foxes earned a berth in the NCAA tournament in what became known as a season of firsts. Additionally, Marist earned its first share of a MAAC regular-season title and compiled its first winning record in 11 years. Giorgis first campaign laid the foundation for future success. Taking over a team in which had lost the fourth- and fifth-leading scorers in program history to graduation the prior year, Giorgis team improved its win total from 11 to 13. The Red Foxes also earned their first win in a MAAC Tournament game in school history with a first-round triumph over Loyola. Prior to his arrival at Marist, Giorgis enjoyed a tremendous amount of success at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie. In his final season there, the girls basketball team finished with a fourth-place national ranking in the USA Today poll and earned its fourth straight New York State Federation Championship. He earned WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors, was runner-up for WBCA National Coach of the Year honors and was selected to coach at the Phoenix/WBCA High School All-America Game. As the head girls basketball coach at Lourdes, Giorgis posted an astounding record of in his 19 seasons, good for a winning percentage of.911. He won nine state championships with the Warriors. In his last two years, his teams posted a combined mark of 56-2 and earned the top ranking in the Madison Square Garden Tri-State Area Poll each year. Giorgis has earned two WBCA Region One Coach of the Year honors and two coach of the year awards from the New York State Coaches Association. He led Lourdes to the league title all 19 of his seasons there and won 15 Section I crowns, with the last 11 coming consecutively. Giorgis achievements at Lourdes were not limited to the basketball court. He is the only coach in state history to take four teams to the state Final Four in his career, as he also guided the baseball, softball and volleyball teams there. His softball squad captured the state crown in Additionally, Giorgis coached golf and tennis at Lourdes and served as athletic director for 10 years. He served two stints as president of the Section One Girls Basketball Coaches Association.
