The Bulldogs lead the WAC in league play with 71.1 points per game. They re also tops in the WAC in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.278), turnover margin (+5.92) and offensive rebounds (13.38/gm). While LA Tech is 8th in the league in field goal shooting (.397), the team attempts nearly seven more shots per game than its opponents. Idaho Vandals It was a similar story for Idaho on Thursday against UT Arlington. The Vandals trailed early, but battled back within one possession late in the game. The Vandals got the stops they needed and protected possession, but couldn t convert four open looks in the final 90 seconds of a home loss. Seven of Idaho s nine WAC losses were games that were within one possession in the final 90 seconds. Vandals vs. Bulldogs Louisiana Tech holds an 11-5 series lead against Idaho. The Vandal swept the season series for the first time last year and led for much of the game on Jan. 17 at Ruston, La., but the Bulldogs pulled out a win. Idaho is 4-3 against Louisiana Tech in games played at the Cowan Spectrum and 3-1 since Vandal head coach Don Verlin took over in the season. Finding the Touch Junior Stephen Madison was a 38-percent shooter from 3-point range coming into the season. Through 23 games this season, though, Madison was hitting his long-range shots at just a 27-percent clip. On Feb. 14 against UT Arlington, Madison showed that he hasn t lost the touch with a schoolrecord-tying 5-of-5 performance from long range. In fact, Madison is shooting 9-of-14 (.643) over his last six games. His 3-point effort on Feb. 14 matched a 23-year-old school record for single-game 3-point percentage held by Mauro Gomes, who also went 5-of-5 from long range on Jan. 21, 1989, against Weber State. Snatching Possessions Speaking of Stephen Madison, the junior forced seven turnovers on Feb. 14 against UT Arlington. He snatched a career-high and team season-high four steals in the game and also stepped in a drew three charges in the game - also a career high for him in a single game. Madison leads the team with six charges drawn this season. Top Home Attendance Under Verlin Date Opponent Att. It ended a career-best 10-game streak with two more 3-pointers for the second-year Vandal. During that run, Hill averaged 15.0 points per game and 3.3 made 3-pointers per game, tallied at least 17 points in five of those games and hit 48.5 percent from long range. The Most Versatile Big Man Senior center Kyle Barone become the most balanced post player all-time at Idaho on Jan. 26 against UTSA. With 1,315 points, 804 rebounds, 130 assists and 114 blocks, Barone is the first Vandal player to reach at least 1,000 career points, 750 career rebounds, 100 career assists and 100 career blocks. He was just the fifth active NCAA Division I player to reach that standard this season. WAC Long-Range Leader He s just a sophomore, but guard Connor Hill has no hesitation to take big shots - and make them. He leads the WAC in 3-pointers made per game (2.71) and in 3-point percentage (.458) this season. That percentage is good for sixth in the NCAA so far this season and is the best in the nation among Division I sophomores. The only time a WAC player led the league in both 3-point percentage and in total 3-point field goals made was , when Jaycee Carroll (Utah State) made 114 long-range shots with a.498 percentage, but Carroll did not lead the league in 3-pointers made per game like Hill is in Milestones Achieved On Feb. 14 against UT Arlington, senior center Kyle Barone hit two impressive standards at Idaho. Early in the second half, Barone grabbed his 800th career rebound, which makes him the second Vandal player to reach that tier, along with Deon Watson ( ). Watson holds Idaho s school record with 877 career boards, while Barone is second at 804. Barone also notched his 500th career free throw attempt later in the same game. With 502 career FT attempts, he joins Chuck White ( ) as the second Vandal to earn 500 or more freebies in a career. White s school record total of 531 free throw attempts is under pressure from Barone, who has 502 with five regular-season games and at least one WAC Tournament game to play. Most Games Played When senior center Kyle Barone steps on the court on Saturday, he ll officially tie Ricardo Boyd s school record for career games played. Boyd played in 121 games in a four-year career from Barone has played in every Idaho game since the season. Barone will break the record next Saturday at Idaho State when he makes his 122nd career appearance in an Idaho uniform. No Misses Senior center Kyle Barone went 10-of-10 from the field on Jan. 26 against UTSA (five dunks helped) and in doing so, posted the best singlegame shooting performance in Idaho history. This season s record in parenthsis. +10 or better (5-1) (1-5) (1-3) Even (0-2) (1-2) (1-0) - 10 or worse (0-2) by Phil Hopson ( Jan. 30, 1982) and Tanoris Shepard (Nov. 26, 2002). It was the best shooting performance by a WAC player since Louisiana Tech s Magnum Rolle went 11-of-11 from the field on Jan. 24, Barone s shooting performance is also tied as second best in NCAA Division I so far this season. The 25 and 15 Standard Kyle Barone tallied 27 points and 16 rebounds on Jan. 24 against Texas State, then followed that up with 25 points and 16 boards on Jan. 26 against UTSA. You have to go back all the way to the season and the reign of Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Gus Johnson to find the last time a Vandal player tallied consecutive games with at least 25 points and 15 rebounds. Barone also grabbed at least 16 rebounds in three consecutive games from Jan. 19 to Jan. 26, another feat that dates to Johnson s era. That s a Lot of Misses On Jan. 3, Idaho took a road win at San Jose State and held the Spartans to.282 overall shooting in the game. It was Idaho s lowest opponent FG percentage of the Western Athletic Conference era and the lowest against a conference opponent since holding UC Santa Barbara to a.213 clip on Feb. 5, 2004, at the Cowan Spectrum. You d have to go back 20 years to find a time the Vandals held a conference opponent to a lower field goal percentage in a road game, though. That game was a Vandal win at Idaho State in which Idaho limited the Bengals to a.250 (14-56) field goal percentage on Mar. 6, Early Perimeter Contributor Guard Connor Hill set an Idaho freshman record with 47 made 3-pointers last season. He s shown no signs of slowing in his second year with the Vandals. His 65 made 3-pointers this season are already the most in school history by a sophomore. The previous sophomore standard was held by Vandal legend Orlando Lightfoot, who canned 60 in , his first season as a Vandal. Hill already has 112 career 3-pointers, which ranks eighth in school history. Getting to 100 Quickly On Jan. 31 against Utah State, sophomore Connor Hill canned his first two 3-point field goal attempts. In doing so, he tied Deremy Geiger (50 games) as the third-quickest Vandal to reach 100 career triples. Gordon Scott set the standard with his 100th 3-pointer in his 36th career game in the season, followed by Dwayne Williams, who made his 100th in game No. 47, also in the season. Geiger tallied his 100th in his 50th career game in Top Low Post Scorer With a three-point play at the 16:37 mark of the second half on Jan. 24 against Texas State, Kyle Barone became the top low-post scorer in Idaho history. He finished the game with a career-best 27 points. His career scoring total of 1,315 points ranks sixth overall in Idaho history. Of the 13 total memebers of Idaho s 1,000-Point Club, only three are predominantly post players - Barone, Riley Smith (1,195) and Deon Watson (1,115). The Magic Number For Idaho, the magic number is 70. Under head coach Don Verlin, Idaho is when the team scores at least 70 points, but the Vandals are when they fail to reach that benchmark. It s the same on the defensive end for Idaho. The Vandals are when foes score less than 70 and when they score more. The Four-Point Swing The four-point play is a generally rare feat in basketball - but not for Idaho sophomore guard Connor Hill. He s converted four of them already this season, a total that leads the NCAA. Xavier Munford (Rhode Island) has converted two fourpoint plays this season, but he s the only other Division I player with multiple conversions. Hill is the only player to convert a four-point play in Why Vandals? One of the unique nicknames in sports, Vandals has been the nickname for University of Idaho athletic teams for more than 80 years. Area sportswriters coined the nickname as they tried to describe the tenacity with which coach Hec Edmundson s basketball teams played defense. It first was used in 1918 strictly for the men s basketball team and officially adopted for all teams in The sports editor of the school newspaper, Lloyd Jazz McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, made the final push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Germanic tribe of old. Interestingly, three of the four conversions have come in road games. Split Scoring Leaders Senior center Kyle Barone and junior guard/ forward Stephen Madison have split the Idaho team scoring lead throughout the season. Barone leads Idaho and ranks third in the WAC at 16.6 points per game, while Madison is fifth in the league with 14.9 points per game. The last time a WAC team finished a season with two players averaging at least 15 points per game was , when Luke Babbitt (21.9) and Armon Johnson (15.7) did so for Nevada, along with Jahmar Young (20.3) and Jonathan Gibson (17.5) of New Mexico State. 1,000 Point Watch Senior center Kyle Barone started the season on the 1,000-point watch. He joined that club on Dec. 1 against UC Davis. Junior guard Stephen Madison is going to finish the season on 1,000-Point Club notice. He has 875 career points and a 14.9 points per game scoring average this season. The last time Idaho had two players on the court with 1,000 career points was the season when both Orlando Lightfoot and Deon Watson were in the 1,000-point club (Lightfoot scored his 1,000th point in the season, Watson did so in ). The only time two Vandal players reached 1,000 career points in the same season was (Brian Kellerman and Phil Hopson). Conference Road Warriors Idaho has started out a conference schedule with three-consecutive road games just seven times since the season. Historically, it hasn t been a successful situation. Idaho went 2-1 this year, with wins at Seattle U and San Jose State before a narrow overtime loss at Utah State. Just once before this season (1967, 2-1) did Idaho post a winning record when opening a conference slate with three-straight road games. A Natural Fit With relatively little point guard experience returning for Idaho this year, senior guard Mike McChristian started Idaho s first eight games at the point. The emergence of JC transfers Robert Harris and Denzel Douglas has allowed McChristian to focus on his primary wing position, and he s prospering. Before the switch, he was averaging 4.1 points and 3.3 rebounds on.375 overall shooting. Since then, he s scored at least seven points in 12 of 16 games and double figures seven times. He s also grabbed five or more rebounds in eight of those games. College Hoops Daily First Half All-WAC On Jan. 1, College Hoops Daily released allconference teams for the first half of the season. Vandal senior center Kyle Barone was one of five WAC players honored on the list, along with guards James Kinney (SJSU) and Raheem Appleby (LA Tech) and forwards Matt Staff (TXST) and Jarred Shaw (USU). 6 Top 10 Vandal All Around Idaho s scoring list isn t the only one Kyle Barone is steadily climbing. He s already in Idaho s all-time top 10 in career rebounds (2nd, 804), field goals (6th, 480), blocked shots (4th, 114), free throws made (2nd, 355) and attempted (2nd, 502), field goal percentage (3rd,.580) and total games played (2nd, 120). Stringing Them Together From Dec. 20 against Boise State through Jan. 5 at Utah State, senior center Kyle Barone went on a career-best streak of four-consecutive games with a double-double. Barone leads the WAC and ranks 12th in the NCAA with 12 double-doubles so far this season. He has 22 in his Idaho career. The last Vandal man to string together a double-double in at least four consecutive games was Vandal Athletics Hall of Famer Orlando Lightfoot, who had six in a row from Jan. 16 through Feb. 5 as a junior in Yeah, He Can Shoot, Too Junior guard Robert Harris entered Idaho s Dec. 29 game at Seattle U with a 2-of-5 career tally from 3-point range. He went 4-of-8 in the game and clinched the team s comeback win with back-toback-to-back triples on consecutive possessions in the final three minutes. Barone has six 20/10 games this season and nine in his career. He has the most 20/10 games by any Vandal since Lightfoot, the team s all-time leading scorer, but he s unlikely to catch Lightfoot, who had 29 such games in his three-year career. WAC Player of the Week Senior center Kyle Barone was selected as the WAC Player of the Week on Dec. 31 for his performance in leading Idaho to a win at Seattle U to open WAC play. Vandals and the Century Mark Idaho has allowed 100 points just once in the last 20 years (at No. 6 Michigan State, , 11/16/08). His teams had taken two 26-point leads into the half before Saturday s 27-point lead at the break. Quick-Change Plays Idaho ranks 343rd in the NCAA with just 3.8steals per game this season. The 55 total rebounds are the most since Feb. 5, 1998, when the team grabbed 63 boards in an win over North Texas. The 21 offensive rebounds are the most since Feb. 4, 2004, when Idaho had 26 O-boards in a win over Idaho State. Also in the game, senior center Kyle Barone scored 20 points and snagged 11 rebounds. It was the first time this season that a Vandal tallied a 20/10 game and it s the first time in at least the last 20 years of Vandal basketball that the feat has been accomplished by two players in a single game.
