1 Geary County 4-H News A Newsletter for 4-H Families and Volunteers March 2019 Regional 4-H Day Regional 4-H Day will be held on Saturday, March 23 rd in Clay Center at the high school. The schedule is posted on the Geary County 4-H website at 4-H Camp June 8-11, Rock Springs 4-H Center Fee: $125 for Geary County 4-H members, $250 for non-4-h ers For 4-H members and friends who have completed 2 nd through 7 th grades by the time of camp. Registration is due May 7 th (see the enclosed flyer and registration form). All Geary County 4-H members who were enrolled by January 1 and complete a scholarship request form that is available at the Extension Office or at will pay only $125 for camp in The Geary County 4-H Foundation is paying the other half of the camp fee. The Extension Office is now able to accept credit and debit cards to pay registration fees. If a card is used, a fee of 2.7% will be charged to cover our fees for providing this service. Camp Counselors Needed Counselors are needed for 4-H camp again this year. Counselors must be at least 14 years old by the time of camp. Applications are available at the Extension Office or online at and are due by May 7 th. Counselors are required to attend training on June 7 th starting at 5:00pm and then are expected to be at camp June The fee for all Geary County counselors will be paid by the Geary County 4-H Foundation. This is a great experience for older 4-H members, so please consider applying! Horticulture Judging Practice Former 4-H mom Connie Poland has volunteered to help Geary County 4-H members with horticulture judging. The dates listed below will help 4-H members gear up for county and state competitions. The practices are open to all interested in horticulture and are designed for all to learn together through some exciting events. Parents are welcome to join youth as well. Thursday, April 4 from 6:00-7:15pm at the 4-H/Senior Citizens Center Thursday, May 2 from 6:00-7:15pm at 4-H/Senior Citizens Center Put these dates on your calendar and plan to attend! Judging Contests and Spring Shows Information about upcoming judging contests and spring shows can be found online at

2 Fair Changes The following fair rule and schedule changes were made at the February 4-H Council meeting. -Bucket Calf exhibitors will draw or be randomly assigned a number for the consultation judging order instead of having to stand in line. Consultation judging will begin at 5:00pm. -Bucket Calf identification deadline will change from May 1 to May 20. -Clothing Construction exhibitors will be asked to submit a picture of nonmodeled construction items, preferably with the 4-H member included, when items are construction judged. -Foods recipes will be included in the bag of baked goods when they are sold. -Three classes for black and white Photography will be added (experience of 3 years or less, 4-7 years, and 8 or more years). Division champion and reserve champion ribbons will be awarded in each class. -Livestock Weigh-in will be held from 7:30-11:30am on Tuesday. -Wednesday evening livestock shows will be moved up half an hour (Shepherd s Lead 4:30pm, Sheep 5:00pm, Swine 7:00pm). Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) What is it? Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a new, national, multi-species youth livestock quality assurance program that covers food safety, animal wellbeing, and character development through age-appropriate educational curriculum. Who needs to get certified? Any youth 8 years of age and older who will be exhibiting a market or breeding animal at the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive or Kansas Junior Livestock Show is required to obtain certification. Exhibitors who will be participating as a 7-yearold will be exempt for this year. YQCA certification numbers will be submitted through the nomination process for market animals, and at the time of entry for exhibitors who only have registered purebred breeding animals. All youth should complete the training by June 15, Chuck Otte from the Geary County Extension Office is offering a YQCA Training that will meet this requirement on Tuesday, March 26 th at 7:00pm at the 4-H/Senior Citizens Center. Beef Weigh-in Weigh-in will be held on Sunday, March 24 th from 2:00 to 3:00pm at J.C. Livestock Sales in Junction City. We will be weighing and tagging market beef cattle. Please bring $3.00 for each tag that you will need. Upcoming Youth Livestock Events at K-State The K-State Youth Livestock Program has some exciting events planned for the upcoming months. Mark them on your calendar now and plan to attend! Junior Meat Goat Producer Day March 30 Animal Science Leadership Academy June 5-8 (applications due April 1) More information on these events can be obtained at the Extension Office or online at The K-State Youth Livestock Program has Twitter and Facebook accounts to keep everyone updated on information and deadlines. 3 Breeding Doe Show Added to Kansas State Fair Grand Drive A breeding doe show has been added to the Kansas State Fair Grand Drive for Any doe that will be shown must be nominated, similar to the Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS); there WILL NOT be a registered/papered show. ALL meat goats must have a complete nomination on file by June 15 th to be eligible for the market and/or doe show at the Grand Drive and/or KJLS. Horse Level Testing Now is a great time to get started on your horse Achievement Level testing if you haven t already done so. All District Horse Show participants will need to have completed the appropriate level testing by June 1 st (9-13 year olds Level 1, 14 and up Level 1 and 2). In order to participate in the 4-H horse show at the Kansas State Fair, 4-H members must qualify at the District Horse Show scheduled for July 1 st in Salina. KSU Youth Horse Judging Camps Beginning Section Advanced Section June 10 th June 11 th 12 th Weber Hall, KSU Weber Hall, KSU $40 fee due by May 10 th $130 fee due by May 10 th Contact the Extension Office or James Lattimer at (785) or jlattimer@ksu.edu for more information. 4-H & Open Horse Judges Certification Clinic Are you a horse judge who needs to re-certify or a horse enthusiast who wants to get certified so you can judge 4-H and open class horse shows? Join us on Friday, April 12 th for a judges certification clinic co-sponsored by Colby Community College Equestrian program, K-State Research and Extension, and Northwest Area 4-H. The training is for participants 19 years old and older and runs from 9:00am to 4:00pm at the Colby Community College Farm. Cost is $45 and registration is due by April 1 st. Dr. Teresa Douthit, Associate Professor in Animal Nutrition, Department of Animal Sciences, KSU, will be the lead trainer. The training will include two halter classes and four performance classes. Visit for more information. Poultry & Rabbit Clinic in Manhattan and Holton Meadowlark District and Riley County are hosting a Poultry & Rabbit Clinic. The purpose of the clinic is to help 4-H members, leaders, and parents learn about basic care, showmanship, judging classes, and rabbit breed ID. The program will be offered March 23 rd in Manhattan at the Green Valley Community Center and March 30 th in Holton at the Northeast Kansas Heritage Center. The schedule for both locations is 9:30-11:30am Poultry Clinic, 11:30am-12:30pm Lunch, and 12:30-3:30pm Rabbit Clinic. Fee is $5 per person or $10 total for a family with 2 or more youth. Register online at Calf Training 101 This training led by Dan Dvorak from North Bend, Nebraska will be held Sunday, April 7 th at 1:00pm at Holton Livestock Exchange just East of Holton. RSVP is due by March 29 th to the Meadowlark Extension Office in Holton at or carar@ksu.edu. The training will focus on getting your calf to behave like a champion.

4 Discovery Days Discovery Days will be held May at Kansas State University. This event is open to all youth 13 to 18 years old by January 1, The theme this year is Discover Your Spotlight. The Discovery Days fee is $195 plus class fees, but Geary County 4-H members who were enrolled by January 1 and complete a scholarship request form that is available at the Extension Office or at will only pay half of the fee. The Geary County 4-H Foundation will pay the other half. Delegates will have the opportunity to attend classes of their choosing and will participate in evening activities such as dances and a talent show. Register online and get more information at before the classes that you want to take fill up! Registration deadline is April 15 th. Contact the Extension Office with questions. Campference Campference will be held June at Rock Springs 4-H Center. This is an event for year old youth as of January 1, The Kansas 4-H Youth Council combined the best aspects of a camp and a conference into an event for middle school youth who still want the fun of 4-H camp, but who also want to challenge themselves to develop critical skills. The pace of the conference will be upbeat, combining fun-filled games with time to talk, listen, and learn. Registration will be open in late March and is due by May 15 th unless all the spots fill sooner (Campference has filled fast the last couple of years). More information will soon be available at Shutterbugs in the Garden Shutterbugs in the Garden will be held April 27 th at Botanica in Wichita and is for 4-H Photography members, leaders, junior leaders, and parents. This event provides an opportunity for youth to participate in hands-on sessions covering a variety of topics. Visit for more information. Multi-County Photo Workshop This annual event will be held April 14 th, starting at 11:30am at the Auburn Community Center in Auburn, KS. Registration and fee is due by April 1 st. The day will begin with a photography judging contest and then will include workshop classes ranging from beginning level to advanced level. There is something for everyone! Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Training The Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Action Team, Kansas 4-H Youth Development, and KSU Polytechnic are co-sponsoring a Kansas 4-H SpaceTech training on Saturday, April 27 at the Polytechnic Campus in Salina. Participants will get to attend two in-depth entry level workshops repeated in the afternoon: Rocketry and Unmanned Aerial Systems. Registration is limited to 30 per session and youth must be at least 11 years old to participate (adults are also welcome). The event is designed as a train-the-trainer type of program. Cost is $25 and the deadline to register is April 15 th. Visit for more information.

5 Building Fundraiser Help Needed The Building Committee is requesting assistance from 4-H members and families for their fundraiser on March 30 th. Setup help is needed at 1:00pm and servers are needed for the evening and will report at 5:45pm. Call the Extension Office at or if you can help. 4-H Building Fundraiser It is almost time for the annual 4-H/Senior Citizens Center fundraiser scheduled for March 30 th. The Building Committee is counting on your support as 4-H and Extension functions use the building rent free. The dinner will be catered by Ricky s Café of Hanover. Doors open at 5pm with the meal served from 6pm to 7pm followed by the live auction. Ticket price is $10 age 12 and under and $13 age 13 and over. Tickets can be purchased at the door, from the Senior Center, Extension Office, or building committee members. Monetary donations from clubs, members, or families are welcome and appreciated! Shooting Sports Instructor Training The next opportunity to certify Shooting Sports discipline instructors will be April 4-7 at Rock Springs. The training begins Friday morning and will conclude Sunday afternoon. If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a shooting sports instructor, contact the Extension Office. Registration deadline for the training is March 27 th. Hazardous Occupations Safety Training in Agriculture Hazardous Occupations Safety Training in Agriculture is required by law for those 14 and 15 years of age to complete prior to working on a farm operated by anyone other than their parent or legal guardian. Older youth are also welcome to participate in a training hosted by Geary and six other Extension Offices on May 28 th from 9:00am to 4:00pm and May 29 th from 9:00am to 3:00pm at KanEquip in Wamego (18035 East Hwy 24). The cost is $30 to cover class material and lunch for both days. Register online at by May 22 nd. K-State Open House K-State Open House will be held April 6 th from 9am to 3pm with free entertainment, career exploration activities, and student research exhibits serving as highlights for the day. For a list of position openings visit Free Vegetable & Flower Seeds Available The Extension Office has some heirloom seed varieties of vegetables and flowers available free to 4-H members. They are from 2018 and may have some reduced germination. The seeds were donated by Blueville Nursery. Stop by the Extension Office and pick some out today!

Host a new friend from Japan in your home July 23 August 17. Kansas 4-H International Exchange Programs are offering hosting opportunities to 20 families this summer. Host families are needed for a Japanese boy or girl; most are aged 12 and 13, with a few delegates aged 14. Host family assignments need to match each delegate with an American same-gender host sibling. Any Kansas family with children age 10-16, who is interested in the Japanese culture, may host. Please remember to list all people who may be picking up the camper, including yourself. 4-H CAMP CODE OF CONDUCT A ending camp at Rock Springs 4 H Center is a privilege, not a right. Camp is a wonderful opportunity to explore new interests, make new friends, and to live and make decisions as a member of a group. To maximize this experience, you are expected to abide by the camp rules and to conduct yourself in an acceptable manner. Treat yourself, other people, animals and property with respect, using good manners, dressing appropriately and by not using profanity. You will be personally responsible for any damage caused as a result of your behavior. Be a good citizen by participating fully, and helping those around you have positive experiences. Know that bullying of any type is illegal and prohibited. Unacceptable behavior will result in disciplinary ac on. If you refuse to accept the rules of the camp or to abide by the decisions of the camp leaders, you will be dismissed from camp. Camp fees are not refunded for dismissal. Campers are not allowed to bring cell phones to camp. If found with a cell phone at camp, it will be confiscated by the camp group and returned at the end of camp. I have read the 4 H Camp Code of Conduct and agree to abide by these expecta ons. As a camper, I understand that misbehavior may result in dismissal from camp.
