Hunter Hall School Newsletter Number 6 Autumn Term 2016 October 14 th Dear Parents, I am writing this newsletter prior to our annual Harvest Festival Service a traditional annual event that that the children look forward to each year. Thank you in advance for all your harvest gifts, the proceeds of which when sold will go to the charity Young Cumbria our designated charity of the year. The children were on fine form during our rehearsal yesterday so I am sure this afternoon s proceedings will be a wonderful event with which to end this half term. Last week also ended on a most pleasant note as I had the pleasure of watching our little ones take part in a cross country event at Mowden their hospitality was most appreciated but my goodness what a display our little ones put on their unfailing enthusiasm and resilience to get the job done was second to none and whilst we were delighted to get children in the top three for their events they all did incredibly well. Saturday and Sunday continued in the same vein at Mowden and Lowther castle and I am only sorry that I was not there to witness such sparkling performances. Those of you who came to our Boden Hall ( ) event many thanks for your support as well as thanks of course to Mrs Wilson and the Parents Group for organising it. Our next big event is the Bonfire evening and tickets are available in the office as I am well aware that there is very little time to purchase them after we return from half term. Speaking of which a reminder that all children should be in winter uniform after half term please. As I quite often mention, health and safety is paramount to all that we do at school and we have been reviewing our signing in procedures. The way of the world would dictate that we do need to stick to rules and regulations please and therefore if you are coming into school for whatever reason within the school day for a reasonable length of time (not at normal picking up and dropping off times) please can I ask you to sign in at the office first where you will be given a lanyard to wear. If you are just simply dropping off a PE bag or whatever then please give a nod to the office so we know you are on the premises. Many thanks for your co-operation with this matter. We are also having keypads fitted to some of our more vulnerable outer doors during half term the children will be given the code but they will act as a deterrent to any would be intruders. Finally regarding health and safety - it is of course getting darker on an evening and we had a near miss with a child coming off the school field late on Wednesday after lacrosse and an oncoming car, so please can I ask you to remain vigilant and check your speed on the drive which is 10 miles per hour. Various other maintenance work is happening in school over the autumn break but our holiday club will run the second week of the holidays if there is enough interest. Please contact Miss Graham: laura.graham@hunterhall.cumbria.sch.uk should you wish to book a place.

A number of our governor committees have met in school this week including academic and oversight and training. It was pleasing to see the children entertaining our chairman Mr Kirk to lunch in the dining hall on his visit even if they did think he was one of the children s grandads! On the bright side at least they recognised him as someone they had seen before! Half term now beckons and your children have a chance to rest, recuperate and recharge their batteries for what I often think is the most frenetic half term of the year Christmas (dare I say the word!) will be upon us before we know it! Thank you once again for all your support. Mrs D Vinsome and all the staff. Year 3 Parents Meetings Due to staff training Year 3 Parents Meetings will now be held on Thursday 17 th November pm. Nutkins News This week we have enjoyed exploring our senses by taking part in lots of activities including making gingerbread men. This activity covered many areas of the EYFS including literacy, physical development and maths. It was a great way for the children to explore all five senses and I have to say, the gingerbread men tasted great! We have also joined Mrs Wrightson to practise our songs for the Harvest Festival. Singing with Mrs Wrightson is always a favourite with the children. I can t believe we have reached the end of the half term already. It has been wonderful getting to know the children, watching their confidence grow as they have settled in. I look forward to hearing all about their half term adventures when we return. Miss H Gallagher BOOK WEEK Last week we celebrated National Children s Book Week, which is an annual focus on the enjoyment of reading, with the aim of encouraging as many children as possible to get into books and the activities taking place throughout the week certainly achieved this goal. Each year we offer a different focus, and this year the theme was Story Genres. During English lessons throughout the week, children in Lower School were introduced to the range of stories by Nick Butterworth and Julia Donaldson and completed written and creative work based upon these popular works. Upper School classes conducted independent research into story genres of their choice, and authors and well-known titles within that genre which included a more detailed focus on their favourite author and book/ books. During the week, teachers invited all children to a special story session, parents were invited into school to read to classes at various times during the day; older children prepared stories to read to younger classes and classes also paired up to share their own reading books.

The week finished with a Dressing Up Day as a book character from their favourite genre, and a special assembly, in which classes were given an opportunity to share the work they had produced throughout the week. Book prizes awarded for innovative costume ideas and creation went to: Edward Martin Reception Minnie Rowley Year 1 Ted Cooper Year 2 Evie Pallister Year 3 Katie Woodhouse Year 4 Eva Whittlestone-Pope Year 5 Freddie Bloomer Year 6 The school also held a week-long Scholastic Book Fair, expertly run by our highly-committed librarians and school staff, which added over 300 to the funds for the school library and we also enjoyed a special treat of a Book Quiz to round off the event. Mrs A Taylor Mowden Hall Pre-Prep X-Country: Friday 7 th October Mowden Pre-Prep. X-Country was to be the start of a very successful weekend of running. Our very excited Year 1 & 2 runners looked sensational in their running vests and ear to ear smiles. The journey there provided me with one of the most memorable comments of the weekend. As we approached Mowden Hall, Annie Milburn chirped up, Mr. Hetherington, the other runners don t know what is about to happen! She was right, the Hunter Hall team really did take the event by storm. The first race saw the Year 1 girls take on the 1.2km course, Minnie Rowley and Antonia Holt-Stott couldn t wait to get going. Once they did, they certainly stamped their authority on the race. Minnie led both boys and girls for most the race; finishing in an impressive 1 st place. Not far behind was Antonia meaning Hunter Hall were 1 st and 2 nd. The next race gave the Year 2 girls and boys a chance to shine. Annie Miller set off at a blistering pace taking the lead and holding onto it for a considerable time; a little work on pacing will certainly help her make the most of her staggering speed. Annie Milburn worked her way methodically through the field and finished in an impressive 4 th place with Matilda Harling not too far behind. The Year 2 boys were involved in a real battle, right from the start. Fergal Rowley and Casey Briscoe tripped and fell in the first 30 metres, but thanks to some impressive army rolls were quickly back on their feet and keen to hunt down the leaders. Matthew Hetherington, following a flying start, was called back and subsequently set off in all but last place. The three boys had a lot of work to do, but were undaunted by the task. Piers Sweeney, who had made an impressive start, was amongst the front runners and it wasn t long before he was joined by his team mates. All 4 boys were now hot on the tail of the lead runner. As the race reached the business end of proceedings, the 4 Hunter Hall runners mounted their challenge. Fergal Rowley, as he later described it, caned it up the hill and was soon in 2 nd place. Matthew decided to follow his lead; the race was on! As they approached the final 200m Matthew began to push the lead runner, finally breaking him in the run to the line. Fergal held on to his impressive 3 rd place with Piers and Casey finishing 4 th and 5 th respectively. To have 4 of the first 5 runners home was a truly remarkable achievement and one that certainly bodes well for the Future. The 5 th Hunter Hall runner Ted Cooper also ran brilliantly and showed great determination to complete the hilly course. As we started the long journey home, I thought back to Annie s wise words- they don t know what is about to happen, they will next year!

Mowden Hall X-Country: Saturday 8 th October On Saturday, Mowden Hall again played host to an inter school X- Country event; this time for U9 & U11 children. The weather was equally kind and the course just as tough! With over 25 children representing the school there was a tremendous atmosphere and plenty of parents to cheer the children home. In the U9 girls race Lucy Hetherington ran superbly, fighting off stiff competition in the home straight to finish in 2 nd place, Evie Pallister again showed her potential and was well placed in 12 th. Paisley Cater, following a strong finish, finished 17 th with our remaining runners coming home in a flurry. Lola Farnan, Katie Woodhouse, Lucy Harnwell and Zahren Shah finishing in 37 th, 38 th, 39 th and 40 th respectively. This impressive performance saw the girls awarded 3 rd place in the team event! All the U9 boys ran their hearts out and left nothing out on the course. Matthew Hetherington and Luca Holt-Stott were our first two runners home, both having had a night to recover from their successes the previous day. Matthew finishing in 16 th with Luca hot on his heels in 17 th. Stefan Carp finished in 25 th, Zach Pallister 29 th, Samuel Wrightson 34 th and Jonty Reay 38 th. Next was the turn of the U11 girls, who were treated to an additional lap of the woodland course. This 2.6km run was a real challenge but in actual fact it attracted our largest number of Hunter Hall competitors- 10 in total! A real credit to the Year 5 and Year 6 girls. Beau Walkingshaw was tucked in behind the leader for much of the race with Eve McKeown not far behind. Beau stuck to her task brilliantly but on this occasion was just shunted out of the medals finishing 4 th, Eve finishing right behind in 5 th. Rosie Airey and Charlotte Harnwell were in the front half of the field and helped the U11 girls team finish in an impressive 3 rd place. However, our B team performed equally well, all girls working exceptionally hard to complete the course, each girl found their own challenge or battle within the race. The girls were a real credit to the school- Josephine Lloyd clearly enjoyed herself as she wore a huge smile the whole way around! The final race of the day saw the U11 boys do battle. Harry Ewbank set off in determined mood and was well placed behind the leaders as he began his second lap. The 10m climb up the grass bank saw Harry make his move for the overall lead and he timed this burst superbly. From this point onwards he never looked back finishing as champion, clear by some 20 metres. A truly impressive piece of distance running in a very competitive race. Toby Dobson was 2 nd home from Hunter Hall in 22 nd, Harry Reay 36 th, Jack Broyan 38 th, Samuel Antonie 41 st and Max Butler 48 th. Max ran superbly showing great determination over the 2 nd lap - battling it out with several runners close by. Needless to say he kept them at bay; something he described to me with great pride. It was a wonderful event and inspiring to see so many Hunter Hall children wanting to represent their school. There is no hiding place in Cross Country running, it is a tough sport that tests you physically and mentally. All the children involved showed they have the ability and determination in bucket loads. Lowther 4k Fun Run: Sunday 9 th October A gruelling 4k run was the challenge placed before 7 intrepid Hunter Hall runners. The 2 lap course, that started from the magnificent Lowther Castle, saw them cross farm fields and attack a substantial hill, some 1km in length! Needless to say all runners completed this with style. Harry Ewbank was the 1 st U11 boy home in a time of 17:52, Toby Dobson not far behind retuned home in 19:51 and secured 4 th place in the same category. Jack Holt-Stott and Emily Hetherington finished in 9 th and 7 th respectively. While in the U9 age group Lucy Harnwell ran superbly to complete the course in 31:52; Lucy Hetherington was 1 st girl home while Matthew Hetherington was 5 th boy. These impressive performances saw Hunter Hall win the schools trophy. A fantastic achievement considering most the children had run at Mowden Hall the previous day! Sedbergh X-Country Chamionship: Thursday 13 th October Following on from the highly successful weekend our U9 & U11 X-Country teams headed to Sedbergh Casteron for another feast of running.

The U9 girls started proceedings, and following a frantic start showed great composure to settle into the race. Lucy Hetherington worked her way into the lead, and soon put distance between herself and the rest of the field, eventually coming home a clear champion. Paisley Cater was rightly delighted with her 10 th place and Evie Pallister again shone, finishing in 16 th. The U9 girls were tremendous and earned themselves 3 rd place in the team event, a massive achievement in such elite company. The U9 boys race saw an act of tremendous sportsmanship, akin to the Brownlee brothers in the final race of the Triathlon World Championships. As Stefan Carp rounded the final bend he saw Samuel Wrightson battling up the final hill, without a thought he swung an arm around his team mate and assisted him up the slope, carrying him over the line. Luca Holt-Stott was the first Hunter Hall runner home in 24 th, Zach Pallister showing tremendous determination to be the 2 nd Hunter Hall runner home in 34 th. The Hunter Hall U9 boys team finished in 5 th place. The U11 girls race was even more competitive than the previous Mowden X-Country. Our leading runners Beau Walkingshaw and Eve Mckeown were again amongst the lead pack and in the hunt for a top ten finish. Beau finished in 7 th place while Eve came home in 14 th. Rosie Airey ran with real vigour finishing in 28 th position, while Eva and Charlotte battled it out not far behind. Connie Clutterbuck Riley came home in 41 st ahead of Olivia Corbishley, 54 th and Emily Hetherington 56 th. All the girls again acquitted themselves brilliantly, finishing the team event in 5 th place. A high ranking when you consider there were 12 schools competing. The boys U11 race saw Harry Ewbank put in another impressive performance finishing in 2 nd place, 20 metres behind the eventual winner from St. Mary s. Toby Dobson and Dylan Simpson were the next two Hunter Hall runners home in 47 th and 64 th respectively. Samuel Antoine, Jack Holt-Stott, Joe Reay and Max Butler all completed the course with style; Max re-creating a scene from Rocky as he stormed up the final hill followed by an ever growing group of U9 runners, all keen to cheer him home. The boys team finished in 7 th place. It was a fitting end to an exceptional week of X-Country running!
