3 Labor Day is considered by many as the official end of summer, but according to astronomers the official end of summer for 2018 is Saturday, September 22. For the northern hemisphere, The Autumn Equinox takes place on September 23, marking the day when the northern hemisphere slightly tilts away from the sun, meaning days become shorter and the temperature begins to cool. While you're taking advantage of the last remaining weeks of summer with fun activities such as traveling, swimming, or grilling, remember these safety tips provided by the American Red Cross! TRAVEL SAFETY Find out what disasters may occur where you are traveling and how you would get information in the event of a disaster (local radio systems, emergency alert systems). Pay attention to the weather forecast for your destination. Use caution in work zones. Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive. If your car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along your predetermined route. Prior to your trip, you should also have your car checked by a registered mechanic to avoid a break down on the road. Don t forget to pack a vehicle emergency kit that contains items like a flashlight, jumper cables, a tool kit, tire gauge and flares. SWIMMING (NEAR RIP CURRENTS) If you are caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Once you are free, turn and swim toward shore. If you can't swim to the shore, float or tread water until you are free of the rip current and then head toward shore. Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures. GRILLING SAFETY Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, the deck, tree branches, or anything that could catch fire. Use the long-handled tools specifically made for cooking on the grill to help keep the chef safe. Never add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.

4 OUTDOOR CHORES Check power tool cords for frays, cuts, or burns before use. Only use power tools that appear to be in good condition! If an extension cord is needed, make sure it is designed for outdoor use and confirm the extension cord s amperage can handle the demand of the power tool you re using. Ladders are needed for many common outdoor chores, such as trimming trees, painting, and cleaning gutters, but avoid use of ladders when home alone in case of an accident! If you re using a metal ladder, prevent it from coming into contact with any electrical source. SUN PROTECTION AND HYDRATION Soda and juice are common drink choices during summer activities, but make sure to adequately hydrate your body with water too. Having a party? Set out some coolers of bottled water and encourage your guests to drink small amounts often. Sure, it s the end of summer, but as you know, the sun is still beaming intense heat. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin before you head out in the sun. Reapply as needed remember that sweat and water activities will require reapplications more often! Keep in mind that some medications can increase your skin s sensitivity to the sun. Hurricane Season 2018 is upon us. Prepare now by signing up for your community s warning system and emergency alerts. Make plans for an evacuation route and shelter locations. Gather needed supplies for at least three days keep in mind specific medical needs, including medication, and the needs of pets. Gather important documents and create passwordprotected digital copies. For more tips visit

8 This Month s Recipe September is National Honey Month! It was created to promote American beekeeping and the beekeeping industry. Check out the recipe below for honey-roasted carrots, a deliciously subtle nod to this month s sweet holiday. Hands-on Time: 25 min Total Time: 30 min Makes 4 to 6 servings You ll need: 2 lbs. baby carrots (with tops) 2 teaspoons olive oil 3 tablespoons butter ½ teaspoons kosher salt ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper 1 shallot, finely chopped 2 tablespoons apple juice 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon chicken broth or water ½ teaspoon chopped fresh thyme (OPTIONAL) Step 1 Place a small roasting pan in the oven. Preheat oven and pan to 500. Step 2 Cut tops from carrots, leaving 1 inch of greenery on each carrot. Step 3 Stir together olive oil and 1 Tbsp. of butter in the preheated pan. Add carrots, salt, and pepper; toss to coat. Bake 10 minutes. Step 4 Melt the remaining 2 Tbsp. of butter in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add shallot and sauté for 1 minute. Remove from heat, and stir in apple juice, honey, and your choice of chicken broth or water. Return to heat, and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium, and cook 5 minutes or until mixture is syrupy. Step 5 Drizzle honey syrup mixture over carrots; toss to coat. Bake for 5 to 7 more minutes, or until carrots are crisp-tender. Transfer to a serving dish, and sprinkle with thyme (optional).
