1 JAMIESON PLACE NEWS & VIEWS WINTER 2018 SECURITY INFO... Vehicle Break and Enters Christmas is over but that doesn t mean car prowlers have stopped shopping for goods. Statistically, vehicle break-ins increase in the early months of the calendar year across the city. Below are a few hints to help protect yourself better from car prowling: Park in well-lit areas, specifically at night. Lock your doors and keep all windows/sunroofs closed. Hide your valuables out of sight, or better yet, take them with you. Do not keep extra keys in your vehicle. Garage openers should never be left in parked vehicles, or should at least be disengaged thieves can use them to gain entry to a home. If you witness suspicious activity, contact building security. You may be helping another person to prevent being a victim of a car break-in or worse. QuadReal supports our communities Back in February 2017, we proudly announced that your building was going to be managed by newly formed QuadReal Property Group LP. From the very beginning, QuadReal recognized the importance of getting involved in their communities, so much so that community involvement became part of the QuadReal vision statement: making meaningful contributions to our communities now and for generations to come. Our Calgary team embraced this theme and throughout 2017 we organized many events focused on supporting our community. We invited you, our Tenants, to get involved in these initiatives and your generosity was amazing! Thank you for all your donations and support for these events! You helped to make a notable difference in our community. Throughout 2017, we Hosted over 20 building events and initiatives; Supported 7 local charitable and non-profi t organizations by organizing drives and/or allowing them to use our buildings to have sale campaigns in support of their cause (Veterans Food Bank, Children s Cottage Society, Jacket Racket, Children s Wish Foundation, Parkinson Alberta, Calgary Police Foundation, Riverview Artists); Planned 4 markets throughout the year where most of the participating vendors were local businesses; Gathered 2,450 pounds of food, 200 winter jackets and other clothing items valued at $1,500 through several food and clothing drives; Raised over $16,000 through our bottle and can recycling program, in support of Children s Wish Foundation; Collected over $3,500 through different events in support of Children s Cottage Society, our current charity of choice; Participated in various charitable fundraising campaigns, contributing $10,000. Also, QuadReal s Calgary team held their United Way campaign through the month of November, which featured a number of fun events and fundraising initiatives in which everyone could participate. The team s fundraising efforts kicked into high gear in late November with a silent auction that we hosted at Western Canadian Place, to which we invited all our Tenants to participate. With incredible support from its service providers, the QuadReal team raised $14,337 for United Way Calgary during this four-hour event. Not only was a signifi cant amount of money raised and much fun had by all, but many happy tenants went home with great buys to assist with their early Christmas shopping! We also proudly hosted several holiday events including: Stampede breakfast Children s Halloween party Festive Musical performances Our country s 150th anniversary. Thank you for all your support, participation and generosity! 2018 will bring more community focused initiatives along with other exciting events.

2 Past events from trips for 2 contest a win-win for tenants and retailers! Waste Not / Want Not Jacket Racket campaign From October 16 November 30, all tenants in our QuadReal downtown buildings had the opportunity to participate in a contest that gave them a chance at three trips for two in celebration of Canada 150 while supporting our building retailers. The number of participants was overwhelming with more than 3,700 gaming cards entered into the contest that resulted in 18,500 transactions. During National Waste Reduction Week, October 9 20, we held a winter clothing drive for Jacket Racket at Livingston Place, Jamieson Place, BP Centre, and Intact Place. We scheduled the drive for two weeks this year instead of the usual one, due to the previous years successes. The trips were to either trendy Montreal, beautiful Victoria or the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel in Banff. The names of the winners were drawn on December 5th. Thank you all for your participation and for supporting our retail tenants! Bins were located on the main floor of each building and tenants were encouraged to bring in their gently used winter jackets, snow pants, gloves, hats, scarves, etc. Altogether 200 jackets were collected from Livingston Place, BP Centre, Jamieson Place, and Intact Place. Jacket Racket is a non-profit, Calgary organization that collects, sorts, cleans and distributes winter outerwear through Calgary schools and various other helping organizations. Tricks and treats at Children s Halloween Party Tenants at Jamieson Place, Livingston Place, BP Centre and Intact Place were invited to our annual Halloween Party that was held in the Winter Garden of Jamieson Place on Saturday, October 28 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. The event was successful with approximately 350 children and their parents attending. The festivities included a magic show, pumpkin decorating, arts and crafts, balloons, light refreshments and Halloween photos. The Halloween Party always sells out quickly and is a favorite for the QuadReal staff who get to see so many cute kids dressed as their favourite character. A little recycling goes a long way All of the pop cans/bottles and milk cartons from all 4 downtown buildings are donated to the Children s Wish Foundation of Alberta, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to fulfilling a favorite wish for children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. From October to December $3,500 was raised; and the total for 2017 was approximately $16,000! Please keep those cans and cartons coming in 2018! 2

3 Past events from 2017 Veterans Food Bank Drive and Remembrance Day We held a second Veterans Food Bank this year from November in Livingston Place, Jamieson Place, Intact Place, and BP Centre. Bins were located on the main floor and we encouraged our tenants to bring non-perishable food items. A total of 896 pounds of food was collected during this drive. Another event to support our Veterans was scheduled on November 6 and 7, when we had tables set up in each building between 11 am and 1:30 pm with several QuadReal volunteers selling poppies for the Calgary Veterans. The total amount donated was $545. Art show in the Winter Garden We hosted an art exhibit during the week of November 13 to November 17, featuring 10 local artists who are part of a group called Riverview Artists. The exhibit was in the Winter Garden of Jamieson Place and the artists were onsite daily to answer questions and talk about their art. It is estimated that 70 people visited it each day. Calendar sale in support of Calgary Canine Unit The Calgary Police Foundation sold calendars and stuffed animals in support of the Calgary Police Canine Unit in Jamieson Place on November 1 and at BP Centre on November 17. The Police Foundation volunteers were joined by some Calgary Police Officers who work in the Canine Unit. They brought along a couple of the unit dogs, answered questions, and provided a lot of information about the unit, and the training and daily work of the dogs. $1,610 was raised at the Jamieson Place sale, and $1,025 was raised at the BP Centre sale. 3

4 JAMIESON COOKS Past events in 2017 Chicken and Corn Chowder Parkinson Alberta grows poinsettias Ingredients: Every year the Parkinson Alberta Grows campaign organizes flower sales of tulips in the spring and mini-poinsettias in the fall to raise funds, awareness and hope for the thousands of Albertans living with and affected by Parkinson disease. 1 tbsp olive oil As part of their Alberta Grows Poinsettias campaign, volunteers from Parkinson Alberta visited Livingston Place, Jamieson Place, Intact Place and BP Centre to sell poinsettias in support of Parkinson Alberta. salt and pepper to taste 1 lb chicken breasts skinless and boneless cubed 3 cloves of garlic minced 1 medium onion chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 2 cups milk 2 cups chicken broth 1 14 oz can cream-style corn 1 14 oz can of corn kernels 120 poinsettia plants were sold and they raised $1,000. Thank you all for your support! 2 tbsp Sriracha sauce 2 green onions chopped 2 tbsp fresh cilantro chopped 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese shredded (optional for topping) Holiday celebrations in the Jamieson Place Winter Garden Directions: To help get everyone into the spirit, we hosted holiday entertainment in the Winter Garden of Jamieson Place on December 6th and 13th, during the noon hour when Allegra Quartet and ONCUE performed. In addition to the entertainment, we offered complimentary hot chocolate and cookies. Each performance drew a great crowd of tenants and the public, and was very well received. 1. In a large Dutch Oven or soup pot heat the olive oil over medium high heat. Add the chicken pieces and cook the chicken for about 5 to 7 minutes, until cooked through and no longer pink. 2. To the pot, add the garlic and chopped onion and cook for another 3 minutes until the onion becomes translucent, stirring occasionally. Winter Market in Jamieson Place On November 29, we hosted a Winter Market in the Jamieson Place Winter Garden. Over 20 local food and product vendors participated and our tenants were able to buy a large variety of items everything from meats, baked goods, sweets, and breads to jewelry and cosmetics. 3. Season with cumin, salt and pepper, then add the milk and the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Add the cream-style corn, corn kernels, Sriracha sauce and stir. Simmer for another 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 4. Garnish with chopped green onions and cilantro, and serve topped with cheese if preferred. From jocooks.com 4

6 Jamieson Place Fitness News Winter Fitness We hope everyone had a nice break over the holidays, but now it s back to business and time to hit the gym! Regular gym users know that New Year s Resolutions and post-holiday guilt will cause more people to spend time at the gym. With that in mind, please remember that: Cardio sign-up is mandatory between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm. Each machine has a 20 minute maximum during this time, and each line on the sign up sheet is worth 10 minutes. You may book a maximum of 2 lines per machine (20 minutes). Use of cell phones is not permitted in the fitness centre; take all calls outside. Orientations To register at the fi tness centre, please contact the fi tness centre staff to set-up the mandatory orientation to the gym. All new members are required to attend one of these sessions and to bring along their completed registration forms. Group Exercise 2018 brings a fresh start to a new year, and with that, a new look to our group exercise schedule! You will notice a few schedule changes with old and new instructors. We developed the schedule to be as accommodating as possible to our fitness community with the best option of classes. Fitness Trends in 2018 The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has released the results of a survey on fitness trends we will see in Here s a look at the top fi ve: 1. STAFF PROFILE Meet Sharlene Quian Property Manager at Jamieson Place and Livingston Place Sharlene has 12 years of experience in the property management industry, starting her career in condominium management, and moving to the commercial property management industry two years later. Most recently, she was the Assistant Property Manager for Livingston Place and Jamieson Place over the last 3.5 years, providing her with the building knowledge to successfully transition into the Property Manager role. In her spare time, Sharlene enjoys spending time with her family, coaching her kids soccer teams alongside her husband, and being active.
