1 Principals Piece E ngã mãtua, tena Koutou, Talofa Dear Parents/Caregivers, St Joseph s Catholic School, Fairfield 88 Clarkin Road, Fairfield PO Box 957, Hamilton Phone: (07) admin@stjosephs.school.nz Website: Week 5 is upon us and we have our Yr 7/8 children at Tui Ridge Camp till Wednesday afternoon. Our Yr 4-6 children are working on their bike skills. Our school is exceptionally busy at this time so please check the website and app for information. Thank you to all those parents who made time to meet with their child's teacher for the parent-teacher meetings. These were valuable for the purpose of relationships between home and school. If you have any concerns please make sure you contact your child s classroom teacher. Parking/Driving: This is an ongoing Health and Safety concern for us at school. We often witness parents doing U-turns on Clarkin Rd, double parking over yellow lines, driving down the driveway at speed, parking over driveways. This must stop so that our children are safe, we need your support around school with this. We have spoken to the Police and Council and I hope they are going to come by regularly. You may be asked to move on by a teacher or we will report you to the Police if an offense is committed. The Momo Challenge: I wasn't going to enter into the "Momo" discussion but it has been brought to my attention that our students ARE aware of this and are discussing it amongst themselves. There is much evidence around to suggest that the Momo challenge is just an urban myth and what kids are actually seeing is screenshots perpetuating the myth on Facebook rather than terrifying videos that are somehow spliced into Peppa Pig or Minecraft or Fortnight videos. The BBC actually published an article saying that it is a big hoax and that schools and police have been too fast to warn parents, therefore amplifying a mediascare-story. /how-to-protect-your-children-from-momo-itssimpler-than-you-think/ Youtube has also said that they haven't received a single report about any "momo challenge" videos on their website. But, because our kids are talking about it, you may like to spend some time with them talking about internet safety in general. and more. This is a paragraph from the BBC article: Police have suggested that rather than focusing on the specific momo meme, parents could use the opportunity to educate children about internet safety, as well as having an open conversation about what children are accessing. Broadcaster Andy Robertson, who creates videos online as Geek Dad, said... "A better focus is good positive advice for children, setting up technology appropriately and taking an interest in their online interactions," he said. To avoid causing unnecessary alarm, parents should also be careful about sharing news articles with other adults that perpetuate the myth. God bless, James Murray Principal 5th March 2019 Issue 3 Inside this issue: PTFA Yr 4-8 Swimming Sports Cultural Corner Seminar: Why Do Children Bully?

2 8th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle C (Luke 6:39-45) The third and final section of Luke s Sermon on the Plain begins: And he told them a parable. There are actually four parables, three of which we read today. They are all about how to be a good disciple. The blind cannot lead the blind. And a disciple cannot be a good disciple unless he or she has learned from the teacher. Everyone who is fully trained is like the teacher who knows how to cure the blind. Before you can be a good disciple and teach others you must take care of yourself. Do not try to take a speck out of your brother s eye until you have taken the board out of your own. Finally, only when you have purified yourself can you produce the good works that the teacher requires. Discipleship asks us to produce good deeds. But to produce them requires the integrity and purity of heart found in the teacher. When people see your good deeds they will know that this is because you have a good heart. The final parable, which we do not read today, is about building on the solid foundation of rock and not on sand. This is the only way to face the difficulties a disciple will encounter and survive. 3 PTFA ST JOSEPH S FAIRFIELD PTFA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2019 Mon 11th March at 7.30pm School Staffroom All parents are warmly invited to attend our 2019 AGM. This is where we report on activities for the past year, and elect role holders for the upcoming year. It is also a fun and informal night. We would love to see some of the many new families we met at the recent afternoon tea. We are also serving a special supper, to be revealed on the night! Gazebos for Shade: The PTFA is currently looking to purchase some gazebos, branded with the school logo, for use at the school as well as out of school events. Second-hand Uniform Sale Co-ordinator: Geraldine Low Thanks to those families who have donated uniform items they no longer require. We would gratefully accept more. These will be sold at the second-hand uniform sale on Friday 5 th April 2.30pm-3pm. Cash only sales please. Sausage Sizzle Lunch Co-ordinator Geraldine Low Our first fundraising sausage sizzle for the year is happening on Fri 5 th April. Sausages cost $2 each and can be ordered before school. Tissues for Classrooms Many parents would have noticed the box of tissues has come off the stationery lists this year. The PTFA is now paying for and supplying tissues to each classroom. Juicies for Sale - $1 Have a cool, tasty treat at lunchtime! Year 7&8 students will be selling Juicies everyday at lunchtime while the weather is hot, to fundraise for events in the senior school. Please remember that students are only to buy for themselves, not for their friends! Credit Union First Credit Union provides a school banking service to all pupils at St Joseph s School. Getting started is easy - just pick up an application pack from the school office, fill in the application form and return it to the school office. If your child/ren are already doing school banking, please note that the school banking drop-off day has now changed from a Wednesday to Thursday. Police Vetting Throughout the year, St Joseph s School has various trips that involve all our students at some stage; camps, sport days, day trips etc. If you could see yourself wanting to help with these or other activities that require parent help in the future, please pick up a Police Vetting form from the office. It will need to be completed and returned with two ID s (Birth Certificate, Drivers Licence or Passport) and $10. The vetting process takes quite some time so it is good to have it sorted beforehand. Vetting lasts for two years. Sacramental Programme The Sacramental Programme 2019 for St Joseph's & St Peter Chanel Parishes is a programme for children who have reached the age of reason which is seven years of age. Reconciliation classes will run for four Monday evenings at St Joseph's Parish, Fairfield commencing on Mon 11th Mar at 6pm. Registration forms are available for collection from the Parish office at St Joseph's, 86 Clarkin Rd, Fairfield. Office Hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 3.30pm, or via upon request, fairfieldcatholic@gmail.com Changes to ICAS Exams This year the ICAS examinations are changing in a number of ways. The most notable are that all the exams will take place in September and that they will be done online (apart from Year 4 writing). Therefore entry forms will not be coming home until Term Two. Yr 4-8 Swimming Sports Congratulations to all the students that participated in the school swimming sports on Friday 22nd February. The rain mostly stayed away and it was pleasing to see students giving it their best effort. A big thank you to all the parents and grandparents that helped out with timekeeping. Results are at the end of the newsletter.

4 Cultural Corner - Wk 5 It has been very pleasing to see the amount of Year 5-8 s that have turned up to give Senior Kapa haka a go over the last couple of weeks. This week will be a bit quieter, due to Senior Syndicate camp. However, by Week 6, we will have a good picture of what our dedicated group will look like. Kapa hapa will run from am every Tuesday. We are pleased to welcome back Desi Walker as our Kapa haka tutor this year. We will also be looking at having a male influence working with the group to teach the boys Haka. Desi will spend time with the Junior and Middle Syndicates teaching Waiata, Te Reo and Māori games. Junior Kapa haka is now also underway; it was lovely to see the enthusiasm of the students in the first session. The Year 0-4 s will be reminded every Thursday by their classroom teacher and taught in Rm 4 each Thursday lunchtime. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask via or visit me in Rm 4. This term the key focus for Te Reo within the classrooms is focused around developing a personal Pepeha or Mihimihi. A Mihimihi is a basic introduction to let people know a little bit about yourself. We have also developed a Mihimihi which represents us as a school. This is to be presented by the students at assemblies and on special occasions; Rooms 7 and 8 did a fabulous job of presenting this to the school at the assembly last week. Nga mihi Anna Crawford He taonga rongonui te aroha ki te tangata Goodwill towards others is a precious treasure Tena koutou katoa, With the start of the new year already behind us there are a lot of exciting things coming up. Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori (Māori Language week), will be nationally celebrated from the 9th-15th September which is in Week 8 of Term 3. Due to the fact that many of our students are involved in the AIMS games during Week 8, the school will celebrate Te Wiki o te Māori in Week 9 from the 16th-20th September instead so that everyone can participate and not miss out on celebrations. Matariki this year will be celebrated from Tues 25th June to Wed 3rd July. There are several performances for the school Kapa haka group and the committee would like to invite parents to help the school celebrate special cultural dates. We would love to hear about any other cultural celebrations relevant to our school community also so we can include as many of them in events throughout the year possible. Our focus for the year is to celebrate the cultures in the school, and creating a welcoming environment. Parents that would like to assist in cultural activities please come to our next committee meeting on Thurs 9th May at 6.30pm in the school staffroom. Chris Hillock Cultural Committee Chairperson Seminar: Why Do Children BULLY? Date: Thursday 7th March 2019, Room 1 Time: 6.30pm pm Venue: St. Joseph s Catholic School, Fairfield Parents all over the world ask this question. The phenomenon of School Bullying is a universal reality. Furthermore, why is MY child the victim and not someone else s child? And as for my child, she or he wouldn t engage in this activity, would s/he? Robert Pereira from Australia will be conducting a staff training day on this topic of school bullying. He is a regular visitor to NZ and has trained staff at some 30 schools in both islands. On Thursday 7th March, he will be offering an evening for parents, to assist us to understand this social problem that can have a long-term effect on our children and teens. Technology and its misuse have now lifted bullying behaviours to a new level. At the seminar, he will reveal the reasons as to WHY girls bully and how we as parents and teachers can assist our girls to move through their personal agendas. Boys bully for different reasons and the contrast will be exposed. Please bring a pen for notetaking. No need to register.
