Youth played crucial roles in the match with 17-year-old goalkeeper Tomas Romero making his first appearance of 2018 and picking up a draw. Offensively, 18-year-old Faris scored on a pass from 17-year-old Brenden Aaronson. PLAYOFFS ON THE HORIZON There are numerous ways that the Bethlehem Steel FC can clinch a second-consecutive trip to the USL Cup Playoffs with the most direct route coming with a victory against Tampa Bay on Sunday. Steel FC can clinch its spot on Saturday evening if Ottawa Fury FC and North Carolina FC fail to claim three points in their contest. If only North Carolina claims a win, Steel FC can advance with a loss so long as it finishes 2018 with a higher goal differential. With a win, Steel FC guarantees a trip to the playoffs and could finish as high as fifth if results throughout the league break its way. PREVIOUS MEETING The two sides last met up in March with the Rowdies claiming a 2-0 victory at home. Steel FC held its opposition scoreless in the opening 45 minutes but goals from Georgi Hristov and Leo Fernandes six minutes apart lifted the home side to the series first win. COACH S CORNER Bethlehem Steel FC head coach Brendan Burke: On the result at Indy Good performance in Indianapolis, I thought from the entire group there wasn t really a weak link in the group and that s impressive because there were seven guys under the age of 20 in the starting lineup. Really happy with the way we ve progressed through the season and how we ve hung on despite our average age getting younger and younger as we go and I think we are living right on that line we try to live on of development and competition aiding in development and giving these guys really meaningful games when it counts. We re happy with where we are at, we would have liked to have gotten three points considering they only had two shots on goal at their place in a meaningful game but we ll take the point. It improves our position slightly and we re not going to be beholden to watching other results over the weekend, it s about us and our performance on Sunday. If the message has changed given the team is on the cusp of making back-to-back postseasons None of the messages change, I think we ve gotten better and better at it over the course of three years. We ve gotten steadily younger over the course of three years and I think some of it is natural and takes time for guys when we started were 15 or 16 years old and are now seasoned veterans at 18/19. It shows in the first team performances this year too, guys like Auston [Trusty] and Mark [McKenzie] were teammates in the USL before they were [with the Union]. I m a firm believer that it is a really valuable experience only because they are stretched and make mistakes and are playing against men at a really young age. It leaves them in a position where they can enter the bigger arena with a little more confidence that they can execute. It s great to see them playing the way that they have and being as young as they have this year, I think we have a firmly established pipeline at this point. If Tampa Bay is more dangerous because they are eliminated from postseason contention Guys are playing for jobs and a lot of those guys make a lot of money so I would think they are more dangerous because they will have a little more freedom going forward. We hope to exploit that if they show any lack of discipline on the defensive side. It also makes them more unpredictable, their lineup unpredictable and makes everything about them unpredictable which is from a coach s standpoint, not ideal.

Tampa Bay fired 26 shots overall, with McCarthy turning away nine in the contest. The opening half saw both clubs looking to establish their tempo and possession in the early moments of the match. After turning away a Rowdies corner kick, Union midfielder Marcus Epps utilized his speed down the left flank in the sixth minute. Collecting a volley from defender Prosper Chiluya that beat the defender, Epps dribbled into the 18-yard box and fired toward the net that was deflected wide for the club s first corner. Steel FC looked for the early tally on the ensuing set piece taken by Matt Mahoney. With a quick restart to the edge of the box toward Steel FC team captain James Chambers. The 31-year-old lifted a curling ball into the box that Cory Burke headed on frame but denied by Tampa Bay s Cody Mizell. After a strong defensive performance, Tampa Bay finally broke through in the 62nd minute on a set piece opportunity. After Sebastian Guenzatti drew a free kick on the right wing, midfielder Jack Blake served into the box a cross that was headed home by veteran Georgi Hristov. Six minutes later, Tampa Bay got the insurance goal as Leo Fernandes collected a pass from defender David Najem and fired a left-footed shot into the net for the two-goal lead. With time winding down, Steel FC fought to trim the deficit, with Chambers seeing a right-footed shot at the edge of the box turned away by Mizell. Moments later, Brandon Aubrey headed down a corner kick toward substitute Mike Catalano but saw his attempt inside the box just miss the near post.

8 2018 BETHELEHEM STEEL FC TECHNICAL STAFF Head coach Brendan Burke Burke is in his third season as head coach of Bethlehem Steel FC, coaching the squad to an regular season record during the club s first two seasons in the modern era. He was formally introduced as the club s first head coach on Oct. 29, 2015 and recently signed an extension to remain with Steel FC for the foreseeable future. During his three seasons with Bethlehem Steel FC, he has navigated 93 different starting XI combinations in 95 career matches while guiding four players to first team contracts with Derrick Jones in 2016, the duo of Cory Burke and Matt Real after the 2017 season and Olivier Mbaizo earlier this year. Overall, Burke had coached 74 players including 29 players with ties to the first team and 17 from the Philadelphia Union Academy the past three seasons. Prior to joining Steel FC, Burke served as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Union from 2011 through He was heavily involved in all levels of the U.S. Soccer pyramid, including serving as head coach of the Union s PDL affiliate Reading United from where he had a record of During his time with Reading, Burke coached 49 players that signed professional contracts including Ray Gaddis, C.J. Sapong, John McCarthy and Matt Hedges. Burke served as associate head coach at Northeastern University in Assistant coach Stephen Hogan Hogan, who formerly served as the head coach of the Philadelphia Union s PDL affiliate, Reading United, is in his third season with Steel FC. Hogan guided the PDL squad to a record in his two seasons with Reading United. The club went and won the Mid-Atlantic Division title along with an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals. Hogan followed up with an even stronger record in 2017, tying for the most wins in the 72-team league. During the season that saw the club reach the postseason for the ninth time in 10 seasons, Hogan s squad conceded an Eastern Conference-low 10 goals. As a Reading player under Brendan Burke, he made 52 appearances, second most in club history, while playing from He helped lead the team to the 2009 PDL Regular Season Title and the PDL National Semifinals in 2008 and A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hogan spent two seasons as head coach at the College of Saint Rose s men s soccer program.
