1 Volume 23, Iss. 11 / 12 November - December 2011 By Brian Blackwell SAJC Newsletter Editor THE JAGGED EDGE E Type 50th Anniversary What a Year It Has Been In 1961, I was only five years old, and too young to care or remember what the original debut and press events were like. I was hoping for my first train set that Christmas. Fifty years later, the list of events that have been put on by every entity you can think of is too long to list, but we will give it a try, and still miss several I am sure. Aside from the re-creation of the famous Norman Dewis run from Coventry to Geneva to provide a second press demonstration car Le Parc de Eau Vives, with 49 other neat and elite Jaguars and their owners or drivers, JCNA organized a thoughtful celebration in Richmond, Virginia, shortly afterward with Norman himself in attendance. Don and Rose Snyder received their JCNA Rally trophy there from Norman himself. I was in the picture too, which is why I do not have a photo of it myself. The rather cold weather that put about an inch of snow put a damper on the E Type show on the final morning, in both quantity and duration of the show. Norman, then at 90 years of age, was the trooper that he always has been, and discussed each E Type that braved the elements for the event. 2 Page 2 Volume 23, 11/12 (continued from pg 1) At this point, we were only one quarter into the year! Individual club events, the corporate events in the UK and USA, the car show tour by Jaguar with several historic and E Types on display were still to come. The Jaguar Club of Mexico Concourso del Elegancia in April was most impressive, with over 30 E Types in attendance. It was there that I learned that 2/3 of the Carrera del Golfo al Pacifico participants are E Type owners and members of that club. The Challenge Championship held in Dublin, OH, and attended by the D Souzas, Garcias, and Blackwell of SAJC, was a celebration of the E Type, with several early cars and seminars put on by subject matter experts like Dr. Mike Mueller of Austin and Dr. Ray Haddock of the Midwest. The Jaguar presence on the Monterey peninsula of California was the most impressive, with a major display at Laguna Seca, with Jaguar showing all the crown jewels of Jaguar racing history. I counted 18 C, D, or XK-SS cars, which is the largest showing since the 2001 Challenge Championship in Franklin, TN, where 25 of the total 58 cars were there. Dick Maury s E Type that he restored himself, was on the Jaguar lawn display at Pebble Beach on Sunday, and a Brit guy we talked to bought it on the spot for $150K. That was a happy ending, Brian Blackwell WELCOME The officers, directors, and members of the San Antonio Jaguar Club would like to introduce and welcome our newest members to the club: JCNA MEMBER TOOL LOAN INVENTORY - Just over a year ago, a Jaguar division in Canada was closing and had a full set of shop tools for old to modern cars that were going to be thrown away. Through Jaguar Cars help from Dan Algarin and generosity of Coventry West and JCNA President Dick Maury, those tools will shortly be available for loan to JCNA members for a small fee. Stay tuned for online and Jaguar Journal details on the program. SOUTH CENTRAL REGIONAL DIRECTOR NOMINATIONS By Brian Blackwell Jaguar Journal editions with voting ballots for regional directors are in the mail to you. Each year, one of two regional directors serving two year terms comes up for election. Gary Vaughan, whom many of you met at our recent Concours, of JOASW is running for the director s seat I have occupied since Even though he is running unopposed, I encourage you to mail in your ballot and show your support for the regional director election process. And good luck to Gary and his future service to the JCNA Board of Directors. 4 Page 4 E Type 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION AT PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS d ELEGANCE The finale for the E Type 50th anniversary, after events at Amelia Island, New York City, Detroit, and several others, was held in Monterey, California on the third weekend of August. Jaguar brought out a lot of the Jaguar Heritage Trust collection from the UK for appearance at many of these events. In addition to the early cars Jaguar owns, the original two cars from the Geneva world debut of the car was there, and even the earliest existing prototype, a car called E2A, universal headed rivets and all, was there. It was displayed with the same livery as it used when it ran at LeMans. The Group 44 cars of Bob Tulius were also there, both E Types and LeMans prototype cars. Top Right: The original New York Auto Show E Type, the gold colored car, was on display Sunday at Pebble Beach. This car now belongs to Mark Miller of San Francisco, CA. Middle Right: The car, before Marlon tinkered with it, on the track at Laguna Seca. All the Jaguar V12 LeMans cars were on display in a tent when they were not on the track. Note that there are more people examining current JCNA President Richard Maury s restored E Type roadster s engine, than are looking at the rest of the new Jaguars put together! Below and Right: The oldest existing E Type prototype, known as E2A, was on display both at Laguna Seca and at Pebble Beach. This car was raced by Briggs Cunningham in the hours of Le Mans, but did not win. It was slated to be cut up, but was saved by a Jaguar employee who bought it.

6 Page 6 JCNA FALL BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING Volume 23, Iss. 9 /10 Every Fall, the JCNA Board of Directors has a meeting to update projects and events in work with and for the 60 or so affiliated Jaguar clubs in Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Jaguar Land Rover offered their east coast training center in Atlanta in 2010, and for 2011, they offered their West Coast training center in Irvine, California. We used one of the training classrooms, and also received a tour and a hat. Entertainment for the weekend included a tour of Tom Krefetz s Classic Showcase in Oceanside, and a trip to Balboa Park in San Diego. Some photos from the weekend show some unique cars and work. SAJC Regional Calendar of Events Friday, December 16th SAJC Annual Christmas Party & Officer Elections To be held this year at beautiful Club Giraud, at 707 N. St. Mary s, (Thanks to Patsy G. Warncke and Fran Curran for making the plans again this year.). See page 3 of this newsletter for complete information. Saturday, January 21st SAJC Annual Rallye to Luckenbach The Blake Lambert Memorial Trophy will be up for grabs again this year, and it is about time somebody from this club steps up and wins it. Starting point this year will be the old Blanco County Courthouse in Blanco. Registration will open by 10:30AM, with the Drivers meeting at 12:15PM. First car out will be at 12:31PM. Giraud, at 707 N. St. Mary s, (Thanks to Patsy G. Warncke and Fran Curran for making the plans again this year.). Friday, March 9th 14th Jaguar Club of America Vacation in Paradise Annual General Meeting and Western States 2012 To be held this year at the Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort in sunny southern Arizona, organized by JCNA past president Dennis Eynon and Mark Stephenson at a beautiful resort specializing in golf. There are so many events that the registration form is two pages long. It begins on Thursday, March 8th, with a track day, with the Annual General Meeting festivities beginning with a Friday night Western Roundup BBQ dinner. The Annual General Meeting is on Saturday, and after the JCNA Awards Banquet Saturday night, the Western States events start up. The Concours d Elegance is on Sunday, the Rally on Monday, and the Slalom on Tuesday. After a Farewell Breakfast on Wednesday, March 14th, everyone heads home. Some of us are considering driving our cars to this one. The last JCNA wide event held in Phoenix was the Challenge Championship in In the online article about this upcoming event, the lack of cars from Texas and Oklahoma in the last event was mentioned. Let s show them that Texas is not too far to drive out of. That time of year should be a cool ride all the way out and back on IH10. El Paso is just over half way, and I believe they are raising the speed limit to 85 MPH in west Texas, which means the far side of the Kerr county line. For full info, see the registration form at Friday, April Jaguar Club of Mexico Concourso del Elegancia Las Caballerizas, Dos Rios, Huixquilucan, Estado de Mexico. Every year, this event brings together 500 cars from the most important classic car clubs plus 80% of all automotive manufacturers who distribute new cars in Mexico. Witness some of the most important new car market releases while at the Concours. The Jaguar Club of Mexico encourages everyone who has not attended this event before to come see Mexico and combine it with this car show. The contact is their club president, David Shepherd, who is as English fluent as his name suggest. You can reach David via at shepmex88@yahoo.com.mx for more information. Your newsletter editor has been each of the last two years, and we have enjoyed it very much.
