Comeback falls shy as Miracle drop series opener in Jupiter Beginning a critical six-game road trip at Roger Dean Stadium, the Miracle fell 4-3 in the series opener with the first place Jupiter Hammerheads on Friday night despite a late rally. Down 4-1 going into the seventh inning, the Miracle closed the gap to one with an RBI single from Trey Vavra and a fielder s choice RBI from Alex Perez. Fort Myers could not solve lefty Ben Holmes out of the Hammerhead bullpen. Holmes recorded the last nine outs for a three inning save with only two hits allowed and five strikeouts. Miracle starter Dereck Rodriguez was the losing pitcher, but tossed seven innings while surrendering four runs, three earned, on nine hits with no walks and only one strikeout. The Hammeheads built a lead with a run in the first and one in the third for a 2-1 advantage. Jupiter went up by three runs after scoring on a throwing error and a Junior Sosa RBI single in the fifth. The Miracle are now two games out of first place. South Division race tight down the stretch With nine games remaining during the regular season for the Miracle, Fort Myersis two games back of the Jupiter Hammerheads and St. Lucie Mets in the FSL South Division. The Charlotte Stone Crabs are three games out and the first half champion Bradenton Marauders are four back. The Miracle have three games remaining against last place Palm Beach, four with Bradenton and two with Jupiter. If teams finish tied atop the standings, the first tie breaker is winning percentage. If that percentage is equal, then record in head-to-head competition followed by record within the division will determine the second half champion. Romero rising star in Twins system after missing a year After missing the entire 2015 season with Tommy John surgery, Miracle starter Fernando Romero has been rebuilding his prospect status. Blessed with an upper-90 s fastball and blossoming secondary pitches, Romero moved from No. 18 on MLB Pipeline s top-30 list to No. 7 by the midseason. After dominating the Midwest League, Romero has posted a 5-2 record with a 1.88 ERA in 11 starts in the Florida State League. Romero has 65 strikeouts in 62.1 innings with just 10 walks and recorded 11 punch outs in seven scoreless innings in a start vs. Charlotte on August 12. Romero has put together a scoreless innings streak of 20.1 innings over his last three starts with 28 strikeouts over that stretch. Navarreto s struggles at the plate has not affected defense On Thursday night, Charlotte s Grant Kay attempted to swipe a bag in the top of the fourth inning. Miracle catcher Brian Navarreto gunned down Kay with a perfect throw that drifted into the mitt of shortstop Nick Gordon at the second base bag for an easy tag out of Kay. Navarreto has now thrown out 53 percent of attempted base stealers and is honing in on his third consecutive year with an over 50 percent success rate. Brian nabbed 59 percent in 2015 and 56 percent in Despite hovering around the Mendoza line for most of the season, Navarreto has been the catcher of record in 31 of Fort Myers 65 wins while working with top propsects Kohl Stewart, Stephen Gonsalves, Tyler Jay, Felix Jorge, Randy Rosario, Yorman Landa and Fernando Romero.
