2 2 For the first time since the Pac-10 merged its Northern and Southern baseball divisions in 1999, the Washington baseball team enters a new season on the heels of an NCAA Regional appearance the year before. Washington was mired in the midst of a disappointing season midway through the 2002 campaign, but turned its fortunes completely around in the second half, ending the year in third place in the powerful Pac-10 and earning a trip to an NCAA Regional in Rice. The Huskies used a Jay Garthwaite three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to force Rice into a second championship game, but ran out of gas in the finale. This year, the UW baseball team has its sites set higher. The big thing is that we have a lot of experience, says Ken Knutson, who enters his 11th year as the Huskies head coach in That s not so unusual. But we have a chance to play no entirely new starters at any position on a given day. We could run out nine guys that have started a lot during their career. That experience creates our nucleus on the mound and in the field. We had some very good players leave the program, but we have plenty of good players back. It s their time. They just need to step up into their roles. PITCHERS The Huskies received a welcomed surprise when righty Sean White decided to return for his senior season. White, one of the UW s top draft prospects in 2002, slipped to the later rounds after (seemingly unfounded) concerns about his arm. White didn t miss a start and won his last six decisions before another strong summer in the Cape Cod League. Whitey was one of our key guys and his success paralleled the team s, Coach Knutson says. He had a rough early period then caught fire down the stretch. We didn t feel like we d get him back. We felt that he was perhaps our top junior prospect last Sophomore pitcher Will Fenton S E A S O N O U T L O O K season. He should be one of the top pitchers in the conference. A second returning starter to the Husky rotation is junior Clay Johnson, who emerged as a reliable weekend starter late last season. Clay, like White, struggled early, says Knutson, then he added a slider and that gave him an out pitch. After that, he pitched well and competed. He was outstanding in the regional. The third spot in the weekend rotation is technically still up for grabs, as are the fourth and fifth spots. However, junior Trevor Gibson, who has spent his first two years pitching exclusively out of the bullpen, emerged as the top candidate after an outstanding fall practice season. We felt really good about Gibson, Knutson says. He had a rough 2002 due to some unusual injuries. Early on, though, he was a key bullpen guy. Now he ll need to compete for a starting position. He was our No. 1 guy last fall. Entering the season, Knutson has a long list of pitchers that could see time as starters or relievers. He hopes that performance and circumstance will sort things out shortly after the season begins. Senior Scott Robertson, juniors Brian Carter, Jeff Petersen, Joel Villalobos, Trent Baysinger and sophomores Will Fenton, David Dowling and Josh Conover finished the fall as the coach s top choices for those early-season innings. Fenton will probably be a silver bullet for me, Knutson says of the right-hander fire-baller who finished as the teams top reliever as a freshman in He s got a great arm and four good pitches. He has a chance to be one of the best arms we ve had since I ve been here. Last year, he was our top freshman contributor on the mound along with Dowling, but they re radically different pitchers. Dowling is a left-hander breaking ball specialist with excellent command who worked his way up the depth to start several games last year, including in the conference season. Carter, another southpaw, made a major jump last season and was a regular bullpen contributor. Petersen will look to make a jump up for his junior season. His stature and the velocity of his fastball make him a top prospect. Robertson, who relies on guile and the ability to throw a curve for a strike will look to return to the form that saw him emerge as the Husky closer in Lefties Villalobos and Baysinger both come to Washington after successful junior college careers and should see plenty of action on the mound. The right-handed Conover and freshmen Matt Kasser and Hunter Hughes, as well as left-hander Jamie Hawkins, will look to increase their innings. Conover s fastball has made strides and he added a slider in the off-season while Hawkins had an outstanding fall practice season. Kasser and Hughes were both top-level high school pitchers in the area last year. Additionally, redshirt freshman Keaton Everitt, who underwent elbow surgery and missed last season, returns. Relatively inexperienced as a pitcher, the 6-foot-6, hard-throwing righty has tremendous upside and will look to develop this season. The best guys are going to pitch, period, Knutson explains. If you get guys out, you ll pitch. I ll let roles develop and the competition will take care of who gets innings. Guys will earn innings. That ll be based on history, the fall and then what they do in games. The first guys out there to begin Junior second baseman Greg Isaacson the season will be those that pitched well last year and last fall. CATCHERS We re as experienced and talented behind the plate as we can be, Knutson says of his catching corps. We re kind of returning three starters there. It reminds me of the year ([1998] that we had Ryan Bundy, Pete Orgill and Dominic Woody [all future pros] at catcher. Sophomore Aaron Hathaway, forced into duty last season by the loss to injury of returning starter Jefferson Thiel, had as much to do with the Huskies turnaround as anyone. His defensive skills improved to the point where he made the NCAA Regional alltournament team despite going 1-for-17 at the plate in the regional. He was also a first-team Freshman All-American. Hathaway improved so much last year. He needed reps and experience and then he turned into a very good player, Knutson says. Early on, his confidence was low defensively, but he came on. Now he s a defensive weapon behind the plate. Thiel, a redshirt junior, returns after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow prior to last season. A former Freshman All-America pick, Thiel was the UW starter behind the plate in both 2000 and It s been a year since his surgery and we ll have to see how he feels, Knutson says. The prognosis is that he ll be 100 percent in February. Before he got hurt, he was a great catch-and-throw guy and an offensive threat. We ll have to find a way to get him plenty of ABs. Junior Ben Johnson, who has made 31 starts at catcher over the last two years, brings a switch-hitting bat to the mix. Ben gives you a left-handed batting catcher as a switch hitter, Knutson says. He missed the fall with a minor condition, but got the green light and is fine.

3 INFIELDERS The Huskies return three quarters of their infield from last season in tact, thanks again to a pleasant surprise in the form of three-year starting shortstop Tila Reynolds. Going around the horn, at first base, the Huskies welcome back sophomore Kyle Larsen, a Freshman All-America after batting.342 and going through his first college season without an error. Kyle is the best defender that we ve ever had at first base, Knutson says. He s what you re supposed to look like as a first baseman. And he can really hit. Last year, junior Greg Isaacson entered the lineup about a third of the way into the season and never lost his starting spot thanks to outstanding defense and a.315 average. Isaacson got the starting spot at second in the middle of the season and we ended up with one of the best defensive second basemen in the country playing every day, Knutson says. He plays mistakefree baseball. Reynolds, who s started 158 career games at shortstop, decided not to sign a pro contract after getting drafted in the 13th round last season. He was the Huskies leading hitter last year with his.347 average and is a top-level defensive player. Getting Tila back for his senior year was as big a pleasant surprise as I ve ever had as a head coach. He ll have a huge senior year, Knutson says. He s really a complete player. He can beat you in a lot of different ways. With he and Greg having a year together under their belts, he continues, they can be one of the top middle-infield combinations in the country. With the loss of three-year starting third baseman Michael Done, Washington will have one new starter in the infield, but junior John Otness has actually started 58 games over the last two seasons at third, second and DH. He emerged as the starter after a battle with sophomore Nick Batkoski last fall. Otness was outstanding in the fall, Knutson says. He s got the job heading into the season. He Junior third baseman John Otness S E A S O N O U T L O O K has the experience and he s worked very hard. He s been very productive when we ve played him. The Huskies have plenty of able backups around the infield. Junior Steve Ramsey has shown a sweet swing in limited action as a first baseman, left fielder and DH. A similar player is freshman Grant Gerrard, except that the left-handed Gerrard may also pitch along with playing first and the outfield. Junior transfer Chad Boudon, who possesses as much raw power as anyone on the team, is also a first baseman and outfielder. Batkoski will certainly get time at third and DH while transfer Brian Bauer, from San Diego State, can play all four spots. The guy that stood out in the fall was Brent Lillibridge, Knutson says of his freshman shortstop, a likely starter there had Reynolds not returned. We have to get him on the field somehow. If he plays like he did in the fall, we ll have to. He can play anywhere on the field except catcher. He runs, catches it and can really hit. Four other true freshmen Zach Clem, Curt Rindal, Josh Showers and Matt Tucker (Michael Done s younger brother) will look to get time to develop as future Husky starters. OUTFIELDERS While it would seem that the loss of three-year starters Jay Garthwaite and Tyler Davidson would leave the Huskies looking for answers in the outfield, things are nearly as dire as they might seem. Junior Mike Wagner, who moved from third base to left field last season, was a Summer All-American and his summer league s MVP after closing out the season as a semi-regular pick in left field. Sophomore Taylor Johnson closed out the year as the Huskies regular right fielder and hopes his late-season successes will carry over to Mike and Taylor played very well in the fall and last year, Knutson says. We think they both have the physique and the tools you want from good outfielders. Wagner had a big summer. He s starting to scratch that potential he has. You hope the summer success sets him up for a big junior year. Taylor is a complete package as an outfielder that can beat you with his legs, bat and arm. He s a No. 3-hitter candidate with Wagner, assuming that Larsen hits fourth. Center field is a little more open to question. The Huskies have two experienced players in seniors Brandon Jacobson and Justin Drake as well as a sophomore transfer in Devin Warner. Freshman Simi Reynolds, younger brother of Tila, will also get a fair shot at the starting role. Brandon has had some great stretches of productivity in his career here, Knutson says. Plus, we have a good transfer in Devin Warner, who is physically very strong, has good tools and knows how to play. Simi is probably our best defender out there. Either he or Drake is our fastest player. Simi has great instincts in center field and has everything you want from a defensive player. Boudon, who could also play first and DH, adds power to the mix while freshman Nick Burnham is a fast, athletic player that will no doubt get a look at any of the three outfield spots. Isaiah Stanback, a scholarship freshman quarterback on the Husky football team, will play baseball this spring as well. The athletic center fielder will split time once spring football practice begins. Sophomore outfielder Taylor Johnson Knutson knows that things are set up for a good season in 2003, perhaps even a great season if things go well. All the pieces are in place. What s left is to roll out the ball, play the games and see what happens. We have to win while also developing our young players. But we also have to play our best guys, Knutson says. That s the focus of our coaching. It s a juggling act developing guys, keeping them sharp and keeping them happy. The Husky coach hopes that the tide of success in the last half of the 2002 season continues to roll into Confidence isn t something you can fake, he says. You have to earn it. Until you ve had success, you re going to have problems with how you see yourself. This group of veteran players now knows what it takes. They should have that confidence that success breeds. The key is that they remember what hard work it took to be good. We need to be proud, but there are more steps to be taken. There are bigger things out there than just going to the regionals bigger things than finishing third in the conference and this team is good enough to do better than that. IN MEMORIUM: LEE JOHNSON Last fall, the Husky baseball program lost one of its biggest supporters and greatest fans with the passing of Lee Johnson. Lee, the longtime owner of Lee Johnson Chevrolet in Kirkland, was well known throughout the Seattle area as one of youth baseball s most passionate friends, and his often-unheralded support of youth baseball in the region was without equal. Aside from his generous financial support of the Husky baseball team, Lee, a UW alum, was also a true and fervent fan of the Huskies, thanks in large part to having a son, Tod, pitch for the team from 1989 to All in the Husky Baseball family will miss him. 3

24 24 In his 10 years as head coach, Ken Knutson has built the UW baseball team into the dominant program in the Northwest, one of the most consistently successful programs in the West and a nationally respected team that always plays at the highest level. In 10 seasons, Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pacific-10 Conference championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division crowns and two second-place division finishes. He has led Washington to within one game of its first College World Series appearance on three occasions. He has beaten five No. 1-ranked teams. He has landed the Huskies first-ever top 10 recruiting class. Knutson has been named the Pac-10 North Coach of the Year three times. In 1994, he coached the first Washington first-team All-American. In doing all this, Knutson s teams have almost completely rewritten the school record books while developing a long list of talented players. Baseball America has called the Washington program one of the nation s fastest rising, and that s largely due to Knutson s efforts. In his relatively brief tenure, Knutson has gained a national reputation as one of the country s finest coaches. In 10 seasons, he has compiled an impressive (.596) overall record while his record in conference play is (.589). Entering the 2003 season, Knutson already ranks second (of 22) on the all-time Husky coaching wins list, having long since passed the legendary Dorsett Tubby Graves, who spent 27 seasons as the UW head coach, in During his 10 years, Knutson has sent 44 players onto the professional ranks, only 12 of whom were drafted out of high school. He has also coached 38 All-Pac-10 first-team players and 21 Pac-10 All-Academic honorees. Under Knutson s tutelege, 21 Huskies have earned some level of All-America acclaim and six have been named first-team Freshman All-Americans. Additionally, seven different Husky players have participated with the USA Baseball National Team, including Chris Magruder, who batted.339 and started in right field for Team USA in Before Knutson s arrival as head coach, no Husky had ever even tried out for the national team. Last year, despite not posting one of the best overall won-lost records of his career, Knutson, who serves as the Husky pitching coach, may have turned in one of his finest coaching jobs. Halfway through the season, the Huskies were mired in a seven-game losing streak and had a record. Against the odds, the UW turned it around in the second half of the year, challenging for the championship of the powerful Pac-10 all the C O A C H I N G S T A F F K KEN e n K KNUTSON N U T S O N HEAD COACH H e 11TH a d C YEAR o a c h F i f t h Y e a r way into the final weekend of the season. At the end, the Huskies went over the last 28 games of the regular season and ended up in third place in the conference, a good enough mark to give the team its sixth-ever NCAA Regional berth Knutson s fourth. At the regionals, the Huskies eliminated both Harvard and Texas Tech before pushing host Rice to the brink in the most dramatic way imaginable. Down 6-4 to the Owls in the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and none on, the Huskies got two runners aboard before Jay Garthwaite smashed a mammoth game-winning homer to force a second championship game, which Rice ultimately won. Six members of the 2002 Husky team signed pro contracts after the season. Two others Sean White and Tila Reynolds were drafted, but decided to return for their senior seasons. In 2001, Knutson s Huskies laid the groundwork for the successful 2002 campaign. The Huskies, despite a rash of devastating mid-season injuries, still managed a record and did so with sophomores nearly everywhere on the diamond each day. In 2000, Knutson s Huskies began that road to success, as one of the nation s top freshmen classes comprised much of a Husky team. In 1999, the first season of the integrated Pac-10, Knutson led the club to a league record and fell perhaps only one victory short of earning an NCAA berth. Knutson also helped tutor the team s highest-ever draft pick Jeff Heaverlo, the 33rd pick in the draft. Heaverlo was one of six Huskies to move onto the pro ranks. Travis Anderson, undrafted out of high school, was selected in the second round while Dominic Woody, also not picked out of high school, broke the school home runs record and went in the fourth round. In 1998, the Huskies posted another banner season, as Knutson s Dawgs won their second consecutive Pac-10 title, sweeping No. 1-ranked Stanford in two games for the title. The 98 Huskies posted a overall mark and won the Pac-10 North with a 17-7 record, earning Knutson his third straight Pac-10 North Coach of the Year honor. The Dawgs smashed another list of school records, including home runs, and finished third at the NCAA Central Regional. For the second straight year, the Huskies finished No. 13 in the nation in the final poll. Following the 1998 season, Washington had seven players sign professional contracts, including four that were taken in the first five rounds of the draft, the secondhighest such total of any college in the nation. In 1997, Washington had perhaps its best season ever. The UW tied the school record for wins (46, set before in 1994) and finished as the No. 13 team in the nation with its overall mark. Washington ran roughshod over the Pac-10 North, posting a 20-4 record, and beat No. 4 Stanford, two games to one, to win the Huskies first overall Pac- KEN KNUTSON S UW HEAD COACHING CAREER Year Overall Pac-10 (Place) Accomplishments (1st) Set Pac-10 North record for conference wins; won UW s second straight division title (2nd) Set UW wins record; 2nd at NCAA Midwest II Regional; fell one win short of College World Series; coached first first-team All-American in UW history; beat three different teams ranked No. 1 at one point during the year (2nd) Won 100th game April 19 at Portland (1st) Pac-10 North Coach of the Year; won second Pac-10 Northern Division title; finished one win short of NCAA berth; had No. 8 recruiting class in the nation (Collegiate Baseball ranking) (1st) Pac-10 North Coach of the Year; won third Pac-10 Northern Division title; won Pac-10 championship; finished second at NCAA Mideast Regional; team finished No. 13 in nation (1st) Pac-10 North Coach of the Year; won fourth Pac-10 Northern Division title; swept No. 1 Stanford for Pac-10 championship; finished third at Central Regional; No. 13 in final poll (5th) Coached three All-Pac-10 first-teamers and first-round and second-round draft picks (8th) Second straight Top-30 recruiting class; four players named some level of Freshman All-America (8th) Picked up 300th win, only second Husky coach ever to reach that plateau (3rd) Made UW s sixth-ever NCAA appearance and got Huskies to regional title game for third time Total Second in UW history with 347 wins; coached 38 All-Pac-10 players in 10 seasons; (.596) (.589) coach of four division titleists and two Pac-10 winners; three-time league Coach of the Year

The Dawgs fell twice to the host Bulldogs in a pair of tight games to be denied a trip to Omaha, but nonetheless had come closer than ever before. The team also had one of the best offensive seasons in Pac-10 history, batting.340 as a team and breaking the school and Northern Division mark in nearly every offensive category. The team also posted 31 road wins on the season, the most in the nation. For his efforts, Knutson was named the Pac-10 North Coach of the Year for the second straight year. In 1996, Knutson was named Pac-10 North Coach of the Year after guiding the Dawgs to a Pac-10 Northern Division title. Knutson s lineup included an average of more than six freshmen per game, but despite its youth and a schedule that included 16 games against ranked teams (all on the road), the Husky team came on to win the division crown. The Huskies then came within one win of a berth in the NCAA Regionals, taking game one of the Pac-10 Championship Series against USC before dropping games two and three. In 1995, Knutson became only the third head coach in Husky history to win 100 games, winning his 100th April 19 at Portland on a three-hit shutout by Jake Kringen and Brett Merrick. Despite seeing his team lose several significant players to the draft and to injury, Knutson coached the 1995 Huskies to a second-place finish in the Pac-10 North, taking the division race into the last weekend. Despite finishing second in the Pac-10 North, 1994 was the most successful in UW history to that point. The UW, playing its toughest schedule ever, was ranked all season, beat three different teams ranked No. 1 at some point, broke the school wins record by seven and was finally stopped in the NCAA Regional final. That team won 42 regular-season games and entered C O A C H I N G S T A F F the NCAA Midwest II Regional as the fifth seed. The Huskies went on to post upset wins over Long Beach State (twice), Santa Clara and Georgia Tech (in a 14-inning marathon) before succumbing to Tech in a second championship game. Washington was the only team that year to force a second championship game on the last day of regional play. UW, which had had only three All-Americans in recorded history (first-team or otherwise), saw five different players named to various All-America teams after the 1994 season. Knutson s first season as the Husky head coach (1993) was an eventful one. Washington enjoyed another of its most successful seasons ever, posting a overall record. The Huskies also won their second straight Pac-10 Northern Division title with a 22-8 league mark, posting a Northern Division record with the 22 league wins. It was the Huskies first repeat since 1932, when the UW won its fourth in a row. Knutson won his first game Feb. 19, 1993, on Chad Hartvigson s three-hit gem, a 3-1 win at Hawaii. Knutson, who spent nine seasons with the Huskies as a player and assistant coach, took over prior to the 1993 season for long-time mentor Bob MacDonald, who left the Huskies after 16 seasons. Directly prior to being named the head coach, Knutson was enrolled in a master s program and working as a graduate assistant at Wichita State. From , Knutson served as assistant head coach and pitching coach for the Huskies. In those three years, he helped produce five quality prospects that all went on to the professional ranks (Scott Brow, Michael Call, Gregg Knaplund, Jim Riley and Chris Berg). Brow made his major league debut for the Blue Jays in 1993 and was on roster for Toronto s World Series victory. That three-year stint was his second as an assistant under MacDonald. From 1982 to 1986 he was in charge of the Husky pitching staff. In 1985, UW led the nation with an earned run average of only 2.80, the only sub-3.00 ERA in the country that season. In 1981, Knutson, a lefthander, pitched 62.1 innings for Washington, recording a 5-2 record and a 2.89 ERA as the Huskies won the Pacific-10 Conference Northern Division title, their first since He earned All-Pac- 10 first-team honors that year, as well as the team s Most Inspirational Player award, after transferring from Seattle University, where he was the ace of the staff and an all-league player. Knutson s head coaching experience prior to taking over at the UW came in the semi-pro Western International League, where he coached a pair of teams. From 1982 to 1985, and again in 1990, Knutson was the head coach of Husky Fever. He led the team to the state championship in 1982 and to runner-up finishes in 1985 and In 1988 and 1989, Knutson took charge of the Seattle Studs. In 1989, the Studs were state and regional champions and qualified for the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita. He received the league s coach of the year award that season for his efforts. Born in Sisseton, S.D., Knutson was raised in Seattle. He was an all-state pitcher at Seattle s Evergreen High School in 1976 and also quarterbacked the football team. Knutson was married on August 31, 1991, to his wife Pam. 26 C O A C H I N G S T A F F 26 JOE ROSS ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH (11TH YEAR) The 2002 season will mark Joe Ross 11th as the Huskies top assistant coach. In 1997, Ross was promoted to associate head coach. He came to Washington prior to the 1993 season after a long and successful stint as head baseball coach at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minn. In his 10 seasons as Washington s primary hitting instructor, Husky players have rewritten the school record book several times over largely during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. The 97 Huskies set new team records for batting, hits, runs, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases and slugging. Their team batting average of.340 was 17th in the nation and the third highest in the history of the Pac-10 (Northern or Southern Division). Washington also posted Pac-10 all-time top-five seasons in runs, doubles and RBI while also ranking in the top 20 in the nation in scoring and slugging, making the 1997 Huskies one of the most prolific offensive teams in the history of the Pac-10. In 1999, he had two different players break UW home runs records. Dominic Woody posted 19 for the season to break the 13-year old school mark while Ed Erickson moved into first place on the career home runs ledger with his 31st. In 2000, Erickson finished his career with 12 more homers than the next nearest Huskies. In 1998, he coached two players Nick Stefonick and Chris Magruder to.400 seasons, the first time in modern Husky history that two players have topped that high plateau. Magruder, Kevin Miller and Ryan Lentz, all recruited and coached by Ross, finished their three-year Husky careers in 1998 as three of the best hitters in school history, as Magruder finished with the career hits, runs and steals record, Miller with the RBI record and Lentz with the single-season homer mark. In 1995, the team batted.297 while Jon Vander Griend and Joe Trippy set numerous career records. One of that tandem finished in the top three in the Pac-10 North in every statistical category. In 1994, he led the team to a.307 team batting average (fourth highest in team history) and an average of nearly seven runs per game. Seven of UW s starters batted better than.300. Under his tutelage that year, Vander Griend broke school records in doubles and triples while Trippy set UW marks in steals, runs and hits. In 1993, he helped Derrin Doty to become only the second Husky in modern history to hit over.400 while leading the team to a.304 average. Another of his pupils in 1993, first baseman Randy Jorgensen, broke the school record with 61 runs batted in during the 1993 season. Ross also handles the lion s share of the Huskies recruiting efforts (sharing those duties with Ken Knutson and Travis Jewett), oversees the coaching of the catchers, and makes the offensive calls during games. His 1995 recruiting class was ranked No. 28 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball magazine, the first time a UW class had been ranked in the top 30. The 1996 class was even more highly acclaimed, earning the No. 8 ranking in that poll and his class for the 98 season was tabbed the No. 15 class in the country. The 2000 class ranked No. 18 and most, recently, the 2001 season s crop of newcomers earned the No. 29 spot. In six seasons as Normandale s head coach, Ross compiled a record and took his team to two NJCAA UW ALL-TIME COACHING RECORDS Overall Conference Years (Total) Coach Record Pct. From 1990 to 1992, Ross also worked as a baseball coach for the United States Baseball Federation. In 1992, he coached the U.S. Junior National team (16-18 year olds) to a silver medal at the World Games in Mexico. Among the members of that team was current superstar Alex Rodriguez, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1993 draft. Ross was also an assistant on the 1991 Junior National team and an assistant coach of an Olympic Festival team in From , he was head coach at Wisconsin-River Falls, which he lead from obscurity to state and NAIA District 14 championships in 1984 and From 1980 to 1983, Ross served as head coach for two different teams in the Netherlands Hoofdklasse Baseball League, a league in which he spent three summers as a top-notch professional player. He was named NJCAA North Central coach of the year twice, NJCAA Region 13 coach of the year four times, MCCC (Minnesota Community College Conference) coach of the year three times and NAIA District 14 coach of the year twice. Ross has also served as a scout in the New York Mets and Yankees organizations. 27 TRAVIS JEWETT ASSISTANT COACH SECOND YEAR C O A C H I N G S T A F F Travis Jewett enters his second season as an assistant baseball coach at the UW. Jewett is primarily responsible for the infielders. He also coaches third base during games and is heavily involved in recruiting. Last year, as infielders coach, Jewett had a lot to do with the Huskies finishing the year with a sparking.974 fielding percentage in Pac-10 play, the secondbest mark in the league. GREGG SWENSON ASSISTANT COACH SECOND YEAR Gregg Swenson, former head baseball coach at Tacoma Community College, joined the Washington staff as the volunteer assistant coach last season. Swensen serves as the Huskies first base coach during games and oversees the outfielders. In his first season in 2002, he helped coach All-Pac-10 pick Tyler Davidson, as well as Jay Garthwaite. Both were drafted following the season. Prior to coming to Washington last year, Jewett spent the last previous years as an assistant under head coach Steve Hertz at Gonzaga. In his last two seasons, the Bulldogs won their division in the West Coast Conference. In 2001, Gonzaga posted a.966 fielding percentage, best in school history, thanks largely to Jewett s efforts. The 1999 team fielded.962, second best in Gonzaga history at the time. Prior to joining the Gonzaga coaching staff, Jewett was head coach at Edmonds (Wash.) Community College. In 1998, his only season with the Tritons, Jewett led Edmonds to the NWAACC championship and was named both the NWAACC Coach of the Year and the National Junior College Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association. That Edmonds team had seven players selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Jewett began his coaching career as the head coach at Tacoma Community College for the 1996 season, where his assistant was current UW volunteer assistant Gregg Swenson. A 1993 graduate of Washington State University, Jewett earned a degree in social science. He played two seasons of baseball at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., before transferring to WSU. Jewett and his wife Tracy have two sons, Tanner and Thomas. The family resides in Seattle. Swenson, who also teaches physical education at Jason Lee Middle School in Tacoma, was named the league coach of the year at Tacoma CC in both 1997 and His teams finished third in the NWAACC the last two seasons and he finished his fiveyear TCC career with a won-lost record of Swenson began his coaching career as an assistant at Sehome High School in Bellingham from 1992 to He helped Sehome to a second-place finish at the state tournament in 1992 and fifth-place finishes in 1993 and In 1996, Swenson moved to Tacoma CC as an assistant coach under head man Travis Jewett, now a fellow second-year assistant at Washington. Swenson attended Olympia High School and Tacoma CC before earning a degree in exercise science and physiology from Western Washington University in In 1997, he completed a master s program in teaching at City University. Swenson and his wife, Diane, a UW grad, reside in Puyallup. JEREMIAH PORTER UNDERGRADUATE ASSISTANT Jeremiah Porter, who spent the last three seasons as an outfielder for the Huskies, will spend his final year in college as an undergraduate assistant coach. After three seasons of playing, persistent injuries forced him to end his career. Porter, who played high school ball at Columbia River High in Vancouver, Wash., earned letters in 2001 and 2002 after redshirting the 2000 season. He made nine appearances and started three games as a redshirt freshman in Last season, he collected his first career base hit in his first at bat of the season, doubling in an 11-2 win over Utah last March 1. As an assistant coach, Porter will work with the Husky outfielders and hitters. At Columbia River High, Porter earned all-league, all-state and honorably mention All- America honors. In 1999, he led the team to the AAAA state championship and a 30-4 overall record. He also earned three letters and was an all-leaguer in football. He served as captain of both teams and graduated with a 3.6 grade point average. Porter will graduate with a degree in comparative religion this spring. He is married to former UW gymnast Kim Claussen. 27
