2 2 When the Pacific-10 Conference s two divisions merged prior to the 1999 baseball season, it marked a decided challenge for the three former Northern Division teams. While it may have taken a couple of years for Washington to rise to that challenge, the Huskies have shown they can indeed compete at the level of one of the nation s top conferences. Two consecutive third-place finishes, as well as back-to-back NCAA appearances, have proven that the Dawgs belong. The 2004 season presents a new challenge to Ken Knutson s 12th Husky team. This time around, the Diamond Dawgs aim to prove that their program has the depth of talent to sustain their recent high level of play. It s not as if the 2004 season looks like a rebuilding year. On the contrary, the Huskies return nearly all of an infield that played the largest role in smashing the school record for fielding percentage last season. There s also loads of depth in the bullpen and a long list of talented hitters that have served mainly parttime roles in the past. However, the loss of a four-year starting shortstop, two power-hitting outfielders and all three regular weekend starters does present a formidable task for Knutson and his team. PITCHING The loss of Sean White and Jeff Petersen, who were both drafted and signed after the 2003 season, and Clay Johnson, who transferred, means that the Huskies must replace the three pitchers that made up their weekend rotation for most of last year. Junior Will Fenton S E A S O N O U T L O O K Knutson has a number of options in this regard: moving former relievers to the rotation, promoting part-time or mid-week starters, relying on players that missed most or all of last year due to injury or going with one or more of his talented corps of freshmen. Potentially, Knutson could have junior Will Fenton to serve as his No. 1 starter. Last season, the hardthrowing righty posted a simply amazing season as he didn t allow a single run in 32.1 innings of work. He went 2-0 with 12 saves and held opponents to a paltry.145 average. However, he was limited in that he generally could work only once a weekend. Moving him to the starting rotation may allow Knutson to get a lot more innings out of his most proven pitcher. Fenton had the best year I ve ever seen, Knutson says. When he pitched, we won. I feel like starting may be easier on him. It might be his future. From the ranks of last year s injured list come senior right-hander Trevor Gibson and junior southpaw Joel Villalobos. Gibson started six games last year and was mostly very effective, posting a 3-0 record. He had off-season surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow and should return to full health. Villalobos was dominant at Bellevue CC before coming to the UW. An unusual arm ailment forced him to rest for the entire 2003 season, but that rest served its purpose as he returned as a top pitcher during fall practice. Gibson is the unknown, Knutson says. He s a bonus if he s back to his form of the fall of 2002 when he was our top guy. Joel had a good, healthy fall. He was a guy that we d expected to start last season. Last season, Matt Kasser, a hard-throwing righty, was dominant when his command was on. He could see time as a starter. Fellow soph, Keaton Everitt, a six-foot-seven righty, also has starting in his future. While very inexperienced, Everitt is a trememdous prospect thanks to his size and the velocity with which he throws. Kasser had a very good freshman year, Knutson says. He s got enough stuff to be a very versatile pitcher. And now Keaton has had a year of health. He works so hard. Consistency and opportunity will make him a really good pitcher. With all of those options, Knutson may not have to rely on freshman starters as much as it might seem from the outside. However, the talent of those freshmen might force him to give them a chance. The UW brought in what may be its best ever pitching class this year and while only time will tell, all four freshmen Richie Lentz, Tim Lincecum, Kyle Parker and Jordan Ponzoha could someday be weekend starters. We feel like these guys will contribute heavily to our program, Knutson explains. They re talented, they re into it and they re going to push everyone for innings. Lentz, who also plays outfield, could start or close, with some of that depending on how much he plays in the outfield or as the DH. Richie was a national Senior John Otness recruit and could really be a good two-way player, Knutson says. His stuff lets you think he could do anything. It also depends on what we end up doing with Fenton. Parker is a bulldog with really good stuff, Knutson continues. He s got a low-90s fastball, a good breaking ball and his change has really come along. Lincecum, the state s player of the year in 2003, also possesses a low-90s fastball, but his best pitch is his late-breaking, hard curve. That curve is dominant, says his coach. He could throw it every pitch. Ponzoha reminds Knutson of former All-Pac-10 righty Shawn Kohn, except he s bigger and he will throw harder. Junior Josh Conover also figures in the mix as he was very solid late in the year as the Huskies top mid-week starter, compiling a 4-0 mark in that role. While only four or five of the aforementioned players can fill starting roles, the rest will help compile what should be a deep bullpen, joining four lefties senior Trent Baysinger, juniors David Dowling and Jamie Hawkins and sophomore Emmanuel Pedroza and a right-hander, Hunter Hughes. Last year, Baysinger emerged as the Huskies top setup man and could continue in the role or perhaps close this year. Trent would also be a terrific starter, Knutson says, but he does so well in his current role thanks to his command and his ability to get right-handed hitters out. His versatility really sets up the bullpen. Dowling generally served in long relief and did it well enough to win seven games a year ago, including a start in the NCAA Regionals. David accepts his role so willingly and knows what I like him to do, Knutson says. Hawkins, Knutson says, could be in the mix in a lot of ways. I like him on the mound. He s got a bit of nastiness about him.

3 Pedroza, a third-year student, came through the walk-on tryouts in the fall and will get his shot two years removed from an outstanding high school career. Hughes is a command pitcher who Knutson says excels and throwing a breaking ball for a strike. CATCHERS The Huskies starting catching situation is pretty easy to figure as preseason All-American Aaron Hathaway returns for his third season as a starter. Originally known for outstanding defense, he emerged last year as the Huskies No. 3 hitter and batted.350. Aaron has got to be the best catch-and-throw guy in our conference, Knutson says, and our depth behind him is very good. Senior Ben Johnson has spent the last three seasons as a backup catcher and part-time starter. Knutson would be more than satisfied with him in that role this year, but Johnson also emerged from the fall as the starter in left field. While he ll hold on to the catching gear, his time as the No. 2 man behind the plate may come down to the play of freshman slugger Matt Lane. Matt is a big, strong, left-handed hitting catcher, Knutson explains. He ll have his chance to be the No. 2. He had a very good fall. Also backing up behind the plate is true freshman Ty Kuehl. INFIELDERS Last year, the Huskies broke the school record for fielding percentage with a.978 mark, good for No. 3 in the nation. There s little reason to think that will change much this year as three-quarters of the starting infield returns. Junior Kyle Larsen has made only two errors in Senior Greg Isaacson S E A S O N O U T L O O K two seasons as the starting first baseman. After a strong start at the plate last year, the six-foot-five slugger struggled at the bat the last half of the year. How he responds at the plate could be a key for the 04 Dawgs. Kyle will be the first to tell you that he was a little down last year, says Knutson, but we anticipate he ll be back on track after a strong summer and fall. He s the key to our defense. He makes it hard for us to throw a ball away. Senior Greg Isaacson returns for his third year as a starting second baseman. Always solid in the field, he made a jump at the plate last year, hitting.322 with nine home runs. Nothing Greg does surprises me, says Knutson. He has a great attitude and is the role model for our program. Senior John Otness is another third-year starter at third base, where he returns this year. John is a returning senior captain who has always been a very productive player for us. We expect a big year out of him, Knutson says. The one new starter in the infield isn t really new. Last year, the coaches converted then-freshman Brent Lillibridge to center field as his play forced them to find a place for him after starter Tila Reynolds unexpectly returned for his senior year. All Lillibridge did was bat.388 with 13 home runs and make firstteam All-Pac-10 and Freshman All-America before spending the summer as a starter on the U.S. National Team. It s important to remember that this isn t a center fielder being converted to shortstop, Knutson explains. It s the other way around. He s a really talented player and it ll be fun to see him out there at shortstop every day. The infield depth is also strong. While there haven t been many chances to break into the starting lineup the last couple of years, Knutson s confident that whenever their time comes, his younger infielders will perform. Backing up at first base are sophomore Curt Rindal and freshman James Allan. Both are powerful and Rindal s fall performance may earn him some starts at designated hitter. Redshirt freshman Matt Tucker and sophomore Josh Showers back up at second base while Brian Bauer is the No. 2 player at shortstop. At third base, hard-hitting freshman Tyler Mach saw action in the fall due to an injury to Otness and showed that he can hold his own there if needed. Additionally, junior Nick Batkoski, who has moved to the outfield, could return at third or short if needed. OUTFIELDERS The only returner with any experience in the outfield is junior Taylor Johnson, the starter in right most of the last two seasons. The Huskies lost, essentially, three other regular outfielders with the move of Lillibridge and with Chad Boudon and Mike Sophomore Brent Lillibridge Wagner moving on to pro ball. Boudon belted 22 homers last year to set a UW single-season record, while Wagner hit 15. While defense is always important, Knutson is tasked with trying to replace some of that power when he restructures his outfield this year. That need meant that the Huskies spent the fall trying several veterans in new spots and at the end of it, Taylor Johnson was joined by three converted players to make up the team s top four outfielders. Taylor Johnson ended the fall playing center with Ben Johnson (the No. 2 catcher the last three years) in left and former third baseman Nick Batkoski in right. Former catcher Zach Clem was the DH much of the time, but also worked out in the two corner spots. I think Taylor is a key guy, Knutson says. He s a physical guy and we expect him to produce. He could hit anywhere in the lineup thanks to his good power and high on-base percentage. Batkoski s been a productive hitter when he s gotten in there, Knutson continues, and Ben had a very good fall. Clem was one of our best hitters in the fall. Those four guys will get the first shot. Younger players fill out the depth in the outfield and all could push the veterans for time. Knutson has three center-field types in sophomores Devin Warner and Nick Burnham and freshman Nick Jiles and a corner outfielder in freshman Brett Kilborn. Like every season, there are question marks going in. The Huskies, however, think they have all the answers. All that s left is to get out on the field and find out. 3

24 24 Sometime early this season, Husky baseball coach Ken Knutson should reach the 400-win plateau. Sometime later in the season, he will hopefully reach 423 wins, a total that would make him the winningest coach in the UW history. That s certainly fitting. After all, during Knutson s 11-year tenure, the Washington baseball program has enjoyed what is clearly its most successful 11-year stretch ever since the program s inception in In fact, in terms of national recognition, you could argue that the last 11 years have seen more success than the previous 92 years combined. In his 11 years as coach, Ken Knutson has built the UW baseball team into the dominant program in the Northwest, one of the most consistently successful programs in the West and a nationally respected team that always plays at the highest level. In 11 seasons, Knutson has led the Dawgs to two Pacific-10 Conference championships, four Pac-10 Northern Division crowns and two second-place division finishes. He has led Washington to within one game of its first College World Series appearance on three occasions. He has beaten five No. 1-ranked teams. He has landed the Huskies firstever top 10 recruiting class. Knutson has been named the Pac-10 North Coach of the Year three times. In 1994, he coached the first Washington first-team All-American. In doing all this, Knutson s teams have almost completely rewritten the school record books while developing a long list of talented players. Baseball America has called the Washington program one of the nation s fastest rising, and that s largely due to Knutson s efforts. In his relatively brief tenure, Knutson has gained a national reputation as one of the country s finest coaches. In 11 seasons, he has compiled an impressive (.606) overall record while his record in conference play is (.592). Entering the 2004 season, Knutson already ranks a clear second (of 22) on the all-time Husky coaching wins list, having long since passed the legendary Dorsett Tubby Graves, who spent 27 seasons as the UW head coach, in He needs to compile 34 wins this season to pass former mentor Bob MacDonald s 422 career wins. During his 11 years, Knutson has sent 52 players onto the professional ranks, only 14 of whom were drafted out of high school. He has also coached 41 All-Pac-10 first-team players and 21 Pac-10 All-Academic honorees. Under Knutson s tutelege, 23 Huskies have earned some level of All-America acclaim and seven have been named first-team Freshman All-Americans. Additionally, eight different Husky players have participated with the USA Baseball National Team, including Chris Magruder, who batted.339 and started in right field for Team USA in 1997 and Brent Lillibridge, the U.S. starter in center C O A C H I N G S T A F F K KEN e n K KNUTSON N U T S O N HEAD COACH H e 12TH a d C YEAR o a c h out for the national team. F i f t h Y e a r field last summer. Before Knutson s arrival as head coach, no Husky had ever even tried After struggling to play up to the level of the re-unified Pacific-10 Conference, the Huskies arrived last year, taking sole possession of third place in the conference with a 15-9 mark and a overall record. That included a sweep of USC, probably the most powerful program in college history, to end the regular season. Washington made its seven NCAA Regional appearance (fifth under Knutson) and once again out-played its seeding, finishing second in the regional after entering as the third seed. Six 2003 Huskies signed pro contracts at season s end. In 2002, despite not posting one of the best overall won-lost records of his career, Knutson, who serves as the Husky pitching coach, may have turned in one of his finest coaching jobs. Halfway through the season, the Huskies were mired in a seven-game losing streak and had a record. Against the odds, the UW turned it around in the second half of the year, challenging for the championship of the powerful Pac-10 all the way into the final weekend of the season. At the end, the Huskies went over the last 28 games of the regular season and ended up in third place in the conference, a good enough mark to give the team an NCAA Regional berth. Six members of the 2002 Husky team signed pro contracts after the season. Two others were drafted, but decided to return for their senior seasons. In 2001, Knutson s Huskies laid the groundwork for the successful 2002 campaign. The Huskies, despite a rash of devastating mid-season injuries, still managed a record and did so with sophomores nearly everywhere on the diamond each day. In 2000, Knutson s Huskies began that road to success, as one of the nation s top freshmen classes comprised much of a Husky team. In 1999, the first season of the integrated Pac-10, Knutson led the club to a league record and fell perhaps only one victory short of earning an NCAA berth. Knutson also helped tutor the team s highest-ever draft pick Jeff Heaverlo, the 33rd pick in the draft. Heaverlo was one of six Huskies to move onto the pro ranks. In 1998, the Huskies posted another banner season, as Knutson s Dawgs won their second consecutive Pac-10 title, sweeping No. 1-ranked Stanford in two games for the title. The 98 Huskies posted a overall mark and won the Pac-10 North with a 17-7 record, earning Knutson his third straight Pac-10 North Coach of the Year honor. The Dawgs finished third at the NCAA Central Regional and, for the second straight year, finished No. 13 in the nation in the final poll. Following the 1998 season, Washington had seven players sign professional contracts, including four that were taken in the first five rounds of the draft, the secondhighest such total of any college in the nation. In 1997, Washington had perhaps its best season ever. The UW tied the school record for wins (46, set before in 1994) and finished as the No. 13 team in the nation with its KEN KNUTSON S UW HEAD COACHING CAREER Year Overall Pac-10 (Place) Accomplishments (1st) Set Pac-10 North record for conference wins; won UW s second straight division title (2nd) Set UW wins record; 2nd at NCAA Midwest II Regional; fell one win short of College World Series; coached first first-team All-American in UW history; beat three different teams ranked No. 1 at one point during the year (2nd) Won 100th game April 19 at Portland (1st) Pac-10 North Coach of the Year; won second Pac-10 Northern Division title; finished one win short of NCAA berth; had No. 8 recruiting class in the nation (Collegiate Baseball ranking) (1st) Pac-10 North Coach of the Year; won third Pac-10 Northern Division title; won Pac-10 championship; finished second at NCAA Mideast Regional; team finished No. 13 in nation (1st) Pac-10 North Coach of the Year; won fourth Pac-10 Northern Division title; swept No. 1 Stanford for Pac-10 championship; finished third at Central Regional; No. 13 in final poll (5th) Coached three All-Pac-10 first-teamers and first-round and second-round draft picks (8th) Second straight Top-30 recruiting class; four players named some level of Freshman All-America (8th) Picked up 300th win, only second Husky coach ever to reach that plateau (3rd) Made UW s sixth-ever NCAA appearance and got Huskies to regional title game for third time (3rd) Second straight NCAA appearance and third-plac Pac-10 finish; two All-Americans; No. 23 in final poll Total Second in UW history with 389 wins; coached 41 All-Pac-10 players in 11 seasons; (.606) (.592) coach of four division titleists and two Pac-10 winners; three-time league Coach of the Year

Washington ran roughshod over the Pac-10 North, posting a 20-4 record, and beat No. 4 Stanford, two games to one, to win the Huskies first overall Pac-10 championship and the first by any Northern Division team since The 1997 Huskies went on to the NCAA Mideast Regional at Mississippi State as the No. 4 seed, but beat the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 seeds to work their way to the championship round. The Dawgs fell twice to the host Bulldogs in a pair of tight games to be denied a trip to Omaha, but nonetheless had come closer than ever before. The team also had one of the best offensive seasons in Pac-10 history, batting.340 as a team and breaking the school and Northern Division mark in nearly every offensive category. The team also posted 31 road wins on the season, the most in the nation. For his efforts, Knutson was named the Pac-10 North Coach of the Year for the second straight year. In 1996, Knutson was named Pac-10 North Coach of the Year after guiding the Dawgs to a Pac-10 Northern Division title. Knutson s lineup included an average of more than six freshmen per game, but despite its youth and a schedule that included 16 games against ranked teams (all on the road), the Husky team came on to win the division crown. The UW then came within one win of a berth in the NCAA Regionals, taking game one of the Pac-10 Championship Series against USC before dropping games two and three. In 1995, Knutson became only the third head coach in Husky history to win 100 games. Despite seeing his team lose several significant players to the draft and to injury, Knutson coached the 1995 Huskies to a second-place finish in the Pac- 10 North, taking the division race into the last weekend. KEN KNUTSON S MILESTONE WINS 1 at Hawaii (3-1), February 19, Puget Sound (15-0), March 10, at Portland (2-0), April 19, at Hawaii-Hilo (4-2), March 23, Arizona State (8-6), March 27, CS Northridge (6-0), April 18, Pacific Lutheran (4-3), April 3, at Loyola Marymount (10-9), Feb. 14, 2003 C O A C H I N G S T A F F Despite finishing second in the Pac-10 North, 1994 was the most successful in UW history to that point. The UW, playing its toughest schedule ever, was ranked all season, beat three different teams ranked No. 1 at some point, broke the school wins record by seven and was finally stopped in the NCAA Regional final. That team won 42 regular-season games and entered the NCAA Midwest II Regional as the fifth seed. The Huskies went on to post upset wins over Long Beach State (twice), Santa Clara and Georgia Tech (in a 14-inning marathon) before succumbing to Tech in a second championship game. Washington was the only team that year to force a second championship game on the last day of regional play. UW, which had had only three All-Americans in recorded history (first-team or otherwise), saw five different players named to various All-America teams after the 1994 season. Knutson s first season as the Husky head coach (1993) was an eventful one. Washington enjoyed another of its most successful seasons ever, posting a overall record. The Huskies also won their second straight Pac-10 Northern Division title with a 22-8 league mark, posting a Northern Division record with the 22 league wins. It was the Huskies first repeat since 1932, when the UW won its fourth in a row. Knutson won his first game Feb. 19, 1993, on Chad Hartvigson s three-hit gem, a 3-1 win at Hawaii. Knutson, who spent nine seasons with the Huskies as a player and assistant coach, took over prior to the 1993 season for long-time mentor Bob MacDonald, who left the Huskies after 16 seasons. Directly prior to being named the head coach, Knutson was enrolled in a master s program and working as a graduate assistant at Wichita State. From , Knutson served as assistant head coach and pitching coach for the Huskies. In those three years, he helped produce several quality prospects that went on to the professional ranks. One, Scott Brow, made his major league debut for the Blue Jays in 1993 and was on roster for Toronto s World Series victory. That three-year stint was his second as an assistant under MacDonald. From 1982 to 1986 he was in charge of the Husky pitching staff. In 1985, UW led the nation with an earned run average of only 2.80, the only sub-3.00 ERA in the country that season. In 1981, Knutson, a lefthander, pitched 62.1 innings for Washington, recording a 5-2 record and a 2.89 ERA as the Huskies won the Pacific-10 Conference Northern Division title, their first since He earned All-Pac-10 first-team honors that year, as well as the team s Most Inspirational Player award, after transferring from Seattle University, where he was the ace of the staff and an all-league player. Knutson s head coaching experience prior to taking over at the UW came in the semi-pro Western International League, where he coached a pair of teams. From 1982 to 1985, and again in 1990, Knutson was the head coach of Husky Fever. He led the team to the state championship in 1982 and to runner-up finishes in 1985 and In 1988 and 1989, Knutson took charge of the Seattle Studs. In 1989, the Studs were state and regional champions and qualified for the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita. He received the league s coach of the year award that season for his efforts. Born in Sisseton, S.D., Knutson was raised in Seattle. He was an all-state pitcher at Seattle s Evergreen High School in 1976 and also quarterbacked the football team. Knutson was married on August 31, 1991, to his wife Pam. They have three children Halie, Andrew and Camille and reside in Bothell, Wash. KEN KNUTSON S CAREER vs.... 26 C O A C H I N G S T A F F 26 JOE ROSS ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH (12TH YEAR) The 2002 season will mark Joe Ross 11th as the Huskies top assistant coach. In 1997, Ross was promoted to associate head coach. Ross has made a reputation not only as one of college baseball top hitting coaches, but also as one of its top scouts and evaluators of talent. Ross came to Washington prior to the 1993 season after a long and successful stint as head baseball coach at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minn. He s worked alongside Ken Knutson through each of Knutson s 11 seasons as head coach. In his 11 seasons as Washington s primary hitting instructor, Husky players have rewritten the school record book several times over largely during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. The 97 Huskies set new team records for batting, hits, runs, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases and slugging. Their team batting average of.340 was 17th in the nation and the third highest in the history of the Pac-10 (Northern or Southern Division). Washington also posted Pac-10 all-time top-five seasons in runs, doubles and RBI while also ranking in the top 20 in the nation in scoring and slugging, making the 1997 Huskies one of the most prolific offensive teams in the history of the Pac-10. In 2003, the Huskies had another outstanding offensive season. Chad Boudon broke the school s home runs record with 22 on the year, tops in the Pac-10 and sixth in the nation. Additionally, the Huskies, as a team, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA in home runs with 96. In 1999, he had two different players break UW home runs records. Dominic Woody posted 19 for the season to break the 13-year old school mark while Ed Erickson photo by Jimmy Reynolds moved into first place on the career home runs ledger with his 31st. In 2000, Erickson finished his career with 12 more homers than the next nearest Huskies. In 1998, he coached two players Nick Stefonick and Chris Magruder to.400 seasons, the first time in modern Husky history that two players have topped that high plateau. Magruder, Kevin Miller and Ryan Lentz, all recruited and coached by Ross, finished their three-year Husky careers in 1998 as three of the best hitters in school history, as Magruder finished with the career hits, runs and steals record, Miller with the RBI record and Lentz with the single-season homer mark. In 1995, the team batted.297 while Jon Vander Griend and Joe Trippy set numerous career records. One of that tandem finished in the top three in the Pac-10 North in every statistical category. In 1994, he led the team to a.307 team batting average (fourth highest in team history at the time) and an average of nearly seven runs per game. Seven of UW s starters batted better than.300. Under his tutelage that year, Vander Griend broke school records in doubles and triples while Trippy set UW marks in steals, runs and hits. In 1993, he helped Derrin Doty to become only the second Husky in modern history to hit over.400 while leading the team to a.304 average. Another of his pupils in 1993, first baseman Randy Jorgensen, broke the school record with 61 runs batted in during the 1993 season. Ross also handles the lion s share of the Huskies recruiting efforts (sharing those duties with Ken Knutson and Travis Jewett), oversees the coaching of the catchers, and makes the offensive calls during games. His 1995 recruiting class was ranked No. 28 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball magazine, the first time a UW class had been ranked in the top 30. The 1996 class was even more highly acclaimed, earning the No. 8 ranking in that poll and his class for the 98 season was tabbed the No. 15 UW ALL-TIME COACHING RECORDS Overall Conference Years (Total) Coach Record Pct. In six seasons as Normandale s head coach, Ross compiled a record and took his team to two NJCAA World Series, in 1988 and He also led the team to league championships in each of his six seasons at the helm and won three Minnesota state championships, four regional championships and two NJCAA North Central District championships. From 1990 to 1992, Ross also worked as a baseball coach for the United States Baseball Federation. In 1992, he coached the U.S. Junior National team (16-18 year olds) to a silver medal at the World Games in Mexico. Among the members of that team was current superstar Alex Rodriguez. Ross was also an assistant on the 1991 Junior National team and an assistant coach of an Olympic Festival team in From , he was head coach at Wisconsin-River Falls, which he lead from obscurity to state and NAIA District 14 championships in 1984 and From 1980 to 1983, Ross served as head coach for two different teams in the Netherlands Hoofdklasse Baseball League, a league in which he spent three summers as a top-notch professional player. He was named NJCAA North Central coach of the year twice, NJCAA Region 13 coach of the year four times, MCCC (Minnesota Community College Conference) coach of the year three times and NAIA District 14 coach of the year twice. Ross has also served as a scout in the New York Mets and Yankees organizations. Ross holds a bachelor s degree (physical eduation/ coaching, 1982) and master s degree (supervision and instructional leadership, 1986), both from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He and his wife, Laurence, a native of the Netherlands, live with sons Alex and Luke in Kirkland.

27 TRAVIS JEWETT ASSISTANT COACH THIRD YEAR Travis Jewett enters his third season as an assistant baseball coach at the UW. Jewett is primarily responsible for the infielders. He also coaches third base during games and is heavily involved in recruiting. Last season, Jewett was largely responsible for helping the Huskies break the school record for fielding percentage. The Dawgs.978 mark was best in UW history, best in the Pac-10 and third in the NCAA In 2002, in his first season as infield coach, Jewett had a lot to do with the Huskies finishing the year with a sparking.974 fielding percentage in Pac-10 play, the second-best mark in the league. Prior to coming to Washington, Jewett served as an assistant under head coach Steve Hertz at Gonzaga. In his last two seasons, the Bulldogs won their division in the West Coast Conference. In 2001, Gonzaga posted a.966 fielding percentage, best in school history, thanks largely to Jewett s efforts. The 1999 team fielded.962, second best in Gonzaga history at the time. Prior to joining the Gonzaga coaching staff, Jewett was head coach at Edmonds (Wash.) Community College. In 1998, his only season with the Tritons, Jewett led Edmonds to the NWAACC championship and was named both the NWAACC Coach of the Year and the National Junior College Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association. That Edmonds team had seven players selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Jewett began his coaching career as the head coach at Tacoma Community College for the 1996 season, where his assistant was current UW volunteer assistant Gregg Swenson. A 1993 graduate of Washington State University, Jewett earned a degree in social science. He played two seasons of baseball at Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash., before transferring to WSU. Jewett and his wife Tracy have two sons, Tanner and Thomas. The family resides in Kirkland. SCOTT ROBERTSON UNDERGRADUATE ASSISTANT FIRST YEAR C O A C H I N G S T A F F GREGG SWENSON ASSISTANT COACH THIRD YEAR Gregg Swenson, former head baseball coach at Tacoma Community College, joined the Washington staff as the volunteer assistant coach prior to the 2001 season. Swenson serves as the Huskies first base coach during games and oversees the outfielders. He also oversees and administrates summer and winter camps. Last year, he added two more All-Pac-10 first-teamers to the list of outfielders he s coached as Chad Boudon and Brent Lillibridge both made the team. Additionally, outfielder Mike Wagner belted 15 homers and was drafted in the fifth round following the season. In his first season in 2002, he helped coach All-Pac-10 pick Tyler Davidson, as well as Jay Garthwaite. Both were drafted following the season. Swenson, who also teaches physical education at Jason Lee Middle School in Tacoma, was named the league coach of the year at Tacoma CC in both 1997 and His teams finished third in the NWAACC the last two seasons and he finished his fiveyear TCC career with a won-lost record of Swenson began his coaching career as an assistant at Sehome High School in Bellingham from 1992 to He helped Sehome to a second-place finish at the state tournament in 1992 and fifth-place finishes in 1993 and In 1996, Swenson moved to Tacoma CC as an assistant coach under head man Travis Jewett, now a fellow second-year assistant at Washington. Swenson attended Olympia High School and Tacoma CC before earning a degree in exercise science and physiology from Western Washington University in In 1997, he completed a master s program in teaching at City University. Swenson and his wife, Diane, a UW grad, reside in Puyallup. They are the parents of a baby daughter named Megan. Scott Robertson, a former walkon who finished his career ranked No. 6 in W ashington baseball history with 10 career saves, joins the coaching staff this season after completing his four year playing career last season. Robertson, who made 50 career appearances as a relief pitcher from the 2000 through 2003 seasons, will aid head coach Ken Knutson in coaching the pitching staff while he completes his bachelor s degree in sociology/law, society and social policy. As a Husky reliever, Robertson enjoyed his best season as a sophomore in 2001, when he went 3-0 with seven saves over 20 appearances. His seven saves that year ranked him second in the Pac-10 that season and were sixth-most in Husky history at the time. A 1999 graduate of Mercer Island (Wash.) High School, Robertson was a three-time All- KingCo Conference selection during his prep career, when he teamed with UW classmate Sean White. He helped the Islanders to a KingCo title his junior year, when he went 10-1, before posting a 9-3 record as a senior. Robertson also earned first-team All-KingCo honors for the M.I. football team. 27
