The pair left the game following the incident and were replaced by freshmen Christan Bullock and Joe Pace. Despite losing two of Michigan s top offensive performers early in the contest, the Wolverines surged on for a 6-3 victory that featured Bullock s first career hit and a career day for reliever Mac Lozer. Following the win on Saturday, Lewis returned to play on Sunday (April 30) while Pace remained in center field. Head coach Erik Bakich is hopeful that Slater will return to play this weekend.» Michigan is also currently without the glove and bat of sophomore Ako Thomas, who suffered an injury during the first game of Michigan s series with Indiana and left the game in the first inning. Sophomore Jimmy Kerr has replaced Thomas at second base, and recently capped off an impressive showing at Rutgers with his first Big Ten Conference Player of the Week recognition. A time table for Thomas return has not yet been announced.» Armed with a record, the Wolverines are off to their best start since the 1989 season, when Michigan captured the Big Ten regular season title before advancing to the NCAA West II Regional. The Maize and Blue finished the 1989 season with a overall record.» Along with win percentage, Michigan currently leads the Big Ten in numerous statistical categories, including areas of pitching, hitting, and defense. The Michigan pitching staff also has the lowest ERA in the Big Ten (3.40), while leading the conference batters struck out (402), and opponent batting average (.225). Additionally, the Wolverine defense is the best in the Big Ten with a.984 fielding percentage.» Ohio State will head to Ann Arbor this weekend after dropping a series to Nebraska and facing highlyranked Texas Tech on Wednesday (May 3). While the Buckeyes 5-10 record in Big Ten play puts them second to last in the conference standings, Ohio State handed No. 1-ranked Oregon State one of the Beavers four losses on the season during the Big Ten/ Pac-12 Challenge earlier this year. Individually, the Buckeyes are led by freshman outfielder and cleanup hitter Dominic Canzone, who is currently batting at a.339 average with a team-leading.468 slugging percentage. Though the two programs did not meet during the 2015 campaign, the Buckeyes defeated the Wolverines five times at the end of the 2016 campaign to essentially dash Michigan s hopes of earning an NCAA postseason selection. In addition to a series sweep in Columbus, Ohio, last year, Ohio State picked up two wins over Michigan during the Buckeyes quest for the Big Ten Tournament title last season.» After hitting.700 in a week that featured a series victory over Rutgers, sophomore infielder Jimmy Kerr was named the Big Ten Player of the Week. The sophomore led Michigan with seven hits through three games, and tied his career-high with three hits in both Saturday s and Sunday s wins. The lefty tossed six complete innings of a 10-6 win over Penn State on Friday (March 31) and struck out a career-high 12 batters while walking just two and scattering six hits.» After hitting.632 in a week that featured five Michigan wins and a Big Ten series sweep of Penn State, junior catcher/third-baseman Drew Lugbauer was named the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week (April 3) and the Perfect Game National Player of the Week (April 4). Lugbauer totaled a team-leading 9 RBI on the week, almost doubling his previous number of RBI for the season (10).» After missing the first four weeks of play, junior Mac Lozer made his first appearance of the season this past weekend at home against Northern Illinois. The righty came in to pitch in the first game of Sunday s doubleheader, taking the mound with one out and two runners on base. Lozer quickly shut down the inning with back-to-back strikeouts, and Michigan eventually won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a walkoff homer.» After splitting the season-opening series against Seton Hall, the Wolverines went 10-1 over the first 11 games of the season, losing only to UCLA in a 1-0 heartbreaker during the team s spring break stretch in California.» Freshman Karl Kauffmann made his collegiate debut at Lipscomb, after missing the first three weeks of play due to illness. With five debuts in the first week of play and seven during the California road swing, Michigan has now had 13 players compete for the first time with the Maize and Blue, including eight collegiate debuts.» The top returning hitter of the Big Ten Conference had a slow start to the year, but junior Jake Bivens warmed up quickly in the second week of play to snap a five-game hitting drought with a two-hit game against Creighton. From there, Bivens picked up a hit in each of the next two games.» Through the first two weeks of play, the Wolverines battled through two extra-inning affairs, capturing two ten-inning victories. Michigan only played three extrainning games during the 2016 season, winning two. Additionally, the Wolverines have been forced to play the bottom of the ninth inning as the home team five different times this season, resulting in two victories.» After tossing six scoreless innings en route to a 6-1 victory over Saint Louis (Feb. 24), junior lefthanded pitcher Oliver Jaskie was named the Big Ten Conference co-pitcher of the Week. Handing the Billikens their first loss of the season and snapping a four-game win streak, Jaskie captured his first victory of the season, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts. The weekly award marked his first of the season. Jaskie shared the award with Ohio State s Yianna Pavlopoulos.» Coming off a season in 2016, Michigan returns 23 players and seven everyday starters to this year s squad, along with two starting pitchers. Despite losing key players to graduation and the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft, the future looks bright for Michigan s oldest athletic program, which celebrates its 151st season this year. Along with 12 newcomers, Michigan s 10-man junior class and seven seniors will look to bring the Wolverines back to the NCAA post-season.» Led by 17 upperclassmen, Michigan s oldest team on campus will celebrate its 151st season this year. Through 150 years of baseball, Michigan has captured two College World Series titles, making seven College World Series appearances and earning 22 selections to the NCAA Tournament. Additionally, Michigan has seen 165 players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.» Michigan lost five seniors to graduation at the close of the 2016 season, as well as two juniors to the 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Along with the 24th-round selection of senior LHP Evan Hill (Detroit Tigers), junior LHP/UT Carmen Benedetti was taken in the 12th round (Houston Astros) and junior LHP Brett Adcock was selected in the fourth round (Houston Astros). Adcock is Michigan s highest draft pick since 2013.» Despite losing seven top performers to graduation and the MLB Draft, Michigan returns its entire starting infield for the 2017 season. Due to an injury, junior Jake Bivens will make the transition to first base, and junior Drew Lugbauer will move over to third base. Up the middle, senior Michael Brdar will return to the shortstop position, while Ako Thomas will resume him role at second base for his sophomore campaign.» In addition to a strong defense, Michigan looks to repeat its strong offensive showing during the 2017 season. Through 57 games last season, the Wolverines out-scored its opponents 362 runs to 247. Of Michigan s 36 wins, just five were one-run ball games, while five of Michigan s losses came by just one run RECAP Under the tutelage of fourth-year head coach Erik Bakich, the University of Michigan baseball program jump-started the 2016 season on a 5-0 run, en route to the best start in the team s history since In addition to road victories over two top-25 programs, the Wolverines boasted a 16-4 record when playing at home in the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
