HILLTOPPER PITCHING Returning Numbers for WKU Wins...21 (87.5 %) Innings Pitched (77.4%) Strikeouts (73.5%) Commonwealth Success Since 2009, WKU has had great success against other schools from the Commonwealth State. The Hilltoppers have been especially dominant at home against in-state competition, holding a 10-3 record in games played at either Nick Denes Field and Bowling Green Ballpark. In the last 26 games against teams from the state of Kentucky, WKU is an impressive 14-12, including a 7-2 mark against the Wildcats. WKU s 20 games decided by one run in both 2013 and 2014 tied a program record for most one-run decisions in a single season. In 93 seasons of baseball prior to 2012, the Tops had played just one season (1991) with more than 18 one-run decisions and did that in three-straight seasons from Most One-Run Games in a Single Season All-Americans 4

5 Taking Down The Ranks The Hilltoppers have developed a habit of taking down the nation s top teams over the years, defeating 11 teams ranked in the Top 25 since March 2008 and multiple ranked teams in last three seasons. Seven of those 11 wins have come against teams ranked Top 10, including a win at No. 3 Louisville last season. WKU s 2014 win over Vanderbilt, the eventual College World Series Champions, marked the first time in WKU Athletics history that any Hilltopper team defeated the eventual national champion in the same season as their title. The Tops will have the opportunity this season as both (2) Louisville and (3) Vanderbilt are ranked in multiple polls. Multi-Hit Games (2016) Player Total D. Hudzina S. Kraft G. Malott T. Peter P. Replacing The Power WKU showcased big-time power last season as it finished third in C-USA with 47 home runs, which were the most since cracking 58 bombs in Unlike the many returners with the pitching staff, the Hilltoppers will have to replace the power in the lineup, losing Anderson Miller (12 HR s) and Philip Diedrick (8) to the MLB Draft and Ryan Church (6) as a senior. The trio also combined for 102 RBI in 2015, with Church s 45 leading the Tops. WKU did tally 28 hits and 18 runs in the Saturday doubleheader against YSU in the opening weekend. HILLTOPPER HITTING Numbers to Replace for WKU Home Runs...30 (63.8%) RBI (59.3%) Hits (52.1%) Runs (51.8%) Hudzina s Impressive Debut Season One player that the the Tops will look to for offense in 2016 will be 2015 All-Conference USA second team selection Danny Hudzina. In his first season on The Hill last year, Hudzina lead the team with 66 hits and 22 multi-hit games, while tying for the best batting average at.327. He was one of two Hilltoppers to start all 52 games in 2015 and ranked among Conference USA s best in six offensive categories: home runs (9 6th), RBI (43 8th), hits (66 9th), total bases (104 9th), slugging percentage ( th), and batting average ( th). He became WKU s most consistent bat last season, tallying a hit in 41 of 52 contests and never going back-to-back games without a hit. In the opening weekend against Youngstown State, Hudzina went 6-for-13 (.462), including a three-hit game, and scored five runs while driving in another Honoring the Li s Blake Li was a catcher at Jonathan Alder High School, a baseball powerhouse in Ohio. He had attended a camp at WKU and told his parents he hoped to play for the Tops someday. On January 26, 2015, he took his life in the family home for reasons his parents did not know. Pawlowski and the coaching staff continued to send recruiting letters to the family s home unaware of what had happened. Once the coaches found out what happened, they surprised the Li s by sending them a national letter of intent off for their son, a Hilltoppers jersey with his No. 10 and a hat. It was more than just being a baseball coach for Pawlowski. It was about impacting people s live and having a positive influence on people. The Li s were estatic by the surprise and plan to attend a few WKU baseball games this season, hoping to create a scholarship in their son s name. Story by Kevin Landers, WBNS-10TV. Pawlowski, who won over 60 percent of his games in 14 seasons as head coach at College of Charleston ( ) and Auburn ( ), has developed 80 MLB Draft selections (50 pitchers) during his 22-year coaching tenure at the collegiate level, won 505 games ( overall) and appeared in 11 NCAA Regionals. Pawlowski turned College of Charleston into a Southern Conference powerhouse during his nine seasons as the Cougars skipper, which included six seasons with at least 36 wins, three NCAA Regional appearances along with a Super Regional appearance in The three-time SoCon Coach of the Year finished his tenure in Charleston with a record of , including a window in which the Cougars established a SoCon record for most wins in a four-year span (180-67;.729). He was named the head coach at Auburn in 2009 after his run of dominance at CofC, and he guided the Tigers to a ( ) record in five seasons of competition in the nation s toughest league, the Southeastern Conference. Auburn won at least 31 games in four of Pawlowski s five seasons, which was highlighted by a campaign in 2010 where the Tigers hosted a NCAA Regional. The Tigers won the SEC West in 2010, marking their first division title since Most recently, the former Chicago White Sox pitcher served as the associate head coach and pitching coach at San Diego State ( ), helping guide the Aztecs to consecutive NCAA Regional appearances while developing one of the finest pitching staffs in the Mountain West Conference. Under Pawlowski s tutelage, the 2014 Aztec pitching staff boasted its lowest ERA (3.71) since 1995 while the 2015 SDSU starting rotation sported an ERA of 3.38 with 266 strikeouts in innings pitched. In five seasons at Auburn, the 14-year head-coaching veteran guided the team to a (.568) record ( overall) and took the program from six consecutive fifth- or sixth-place finishes in the Southeastern Conference s Western Division to a 2010 Division Championship, its first since 1995, and a 2010 NCAA Regional Host, winning 43 games during the remarkable and memorable 2010 campaign. In addition, Pawlowski s ability to guide the team to four consecutive SEC Tournament appearances from 2010 through 2013 marked the first time Auburn had appeared in the conference tournament in consecutive seasons since it went for seven straight years from It also moved Auburn into a rare category among SEC teams as it was one of only five Southeastern Conference programs to play in the conference tournament in each season from and one of just two from the SEC West. Auburn s 43 wins in 2010 were the seventh-most in school history and along with the wins came numerous accolades for the program, including the SEC Player of the Year (Hunter Morris), six All-SEC selections, four of which were on the First Team (Morris, Brian Fletcher, Trent Mummey and Kevin Patterson), and two All- America choices (Morris and Fletcher). At the conclusion of the 2010 season, Pawlowski s group saw a nationalbest and SEC and school record-tying 11 players get drafted, including nine in the first 18 rounds. A three-time Southern Conference Coach of the Year (2004, 2005 & 2007), Pawlowski turned a regionally successful program at the College of Charleston into a nationally recognized program to be feared as the Cougars twice established school records for wins in a season and advanced into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in CofC history in 2004, an accomplishment that the Cougars repeated in 2005 and By the end of the 2006 season the College of Charleston was clearly on the map as it went to SEC Champion Kentucky s home field and went 3-0 to win the NCAA Regional and advance to the Atlanta Super Regional. The Cougars finished the year ranked as high as 12th nationally. In nine years at the College of Charleston, Pawlowski guided the Cougars to a mark overall and a (.663) record in Southern Conference play. He also helped develop his players into 42 all-conference honors, four academic All-America honors, three SoCon Pitchers of the Year and two SoCon Players of the Year accolades.
