Tacoma trailed the Grizzlies 3-2 before posting a one-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. Outfielder Xavier Avery led off with a double, advanced to third when Michael Saunders flied out to left field and then scored the game-tying run on an RBI single hit by Stefen Romero. The score remained locked at 3-3 until Fresno pulled ahead for good in the 11th inning. Infielder Tony Abreu scored the game-deciding run from third base on a wild pitch thrown by Lucas Luetge, snapping the Rainiers winning streak at three games. As a team, the Rainiers combined to collect a total of ten hits in the series finale. Infielder Ketel Marte went 2-for-3 in his first Triple-A game following a promotion from Double-A Jackson on Sunday. Romero and Ty Kelly turned in the team s other multi-hit efforts after each collected a pair of hits. Romero is now batting.371 (13x35) with 11 RBI in eight games since begin optioned from Seattle on August 1. The left-hander Luetge (3-2) was dealt the loss after surrendering the go-ahead run in 1.0 inning of work in the 11th. Starter Jordan Pries surrendered three runs on six hits and five walks in 5.1 innings. Relievers Matt Palmer and Logan Bawcom combined to strike out five in 4.2 shutout innings of work out of the bullpen. CARRIED AWAY: Andrew Carraway will make his 20th start of the season (23 G) tonight and he has not allowed a run in 9.1 career innings against New Orleans. In two starts against the Zephyrs, Carraway has allowed five hits, three walks and struck out eight. The right-hander has allowed only two runs in his last eight innings (2 G) on the road. MONTH OF MONTERO: Today Rainiers first baseman Jesus Montero was named the PCL Player of the Month for July. Montero led the PCL with 33 RBI and 72 total bases in 27 games with the Rainiers last month. He ranked second in the league in slugging percentage (.692) and extra-base hits (17), and third in total hits with 39. Montero turned in 12 multihit games over that stretch, including a season-high 5-for-5, six-rbi performance at Salt Lake on July 4. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS: The Rainiers 4-3 defeat on Monday was the club s 44th one-run game in 123 games played this season, which ranks as the second-most in the league. That total is the most by a Rainiers team since they played 49 one-run games in The Rainiers are (.533) in one-run contest this season. BIG AND EASY: The Rainiers return to New Orleans for the second consecutive year after posting a 3-1 record there last season. Tacoma outscored the Zephyrs in the four-game series last season and have not lost a series in New Orleans since they suffered a four-game sweep in AMERICAN HUSTLE: The Rainiers begin a 16-game stretch of games against American Conference opponents. Tacoma owns a 12-4 record (.750) through their first 16 games against teams from the other side of the league this season. The Rainiers own a record (.481) against the rest of the PCL. EXTRA, EXTRA: The Rainiers played their 15th extra-innings games of the season yesterday, which ranks as the most in the league. That stands as the most extra-innings contests the Rainiers have played since they played 16 in The Rainiers are 9-6 (.600) in extra-inning affairs this season. GETTING WHIFFS: Tacoma pitchers struck out 10 hitters yesterday and averaged 11.6 strikeouts a game during the five game homestand. In the five games prior to the homestand, Rainiers pitchers averaged 6.8 strikeouts a game. For the season, Rainiers pitchers are averaging 7.6 strikeouts a game, down from the 8.0 strikeouts a game last year. ROARING ROMERO: Stefen Romero was one of three Rainiers to collect multiple hits last night, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. In his last eight games, Romero is hitting.371 (13x35) with five runs scored, four home runs and 11 RBI. Five of Romero s seven home runs this season have come on the road. JUST FOR HICKS: Catcher John Hicks has hit safely in each of his last seven games, and is batting.435 (10x23) since July 30.
