Tacoma trailed 3-2 before posting a pair of runs on two hits in the game s final frame. Xavier Avery led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on Nick Franklin s bunt single and then scored the tying run on another single hit by Ji-Man Choi. In the team s fourth at-bat of the inning, Smoak accounted for the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that scored Franklin. Jesus Montero was responsible for bringing in half the team s run total on Monday after cutting a 3-0 deficit down to one run with a two-out tworun home run in the seventh inning. The home run was Montero s team-leading 16th of the season and eighth in 24 games played this month. As a team, the Rainiers combined to collect a total of seven hits in their series finale with the River Cats. The outfielder Avery and infielder Franklin turned in the club s only multi-hit efforts after each collected a pair of singles. Reliever Todd Coffey (4-1) earned the win after striking one in a perfect inning of work in the ninth. Starter Erasmo Ramirez limited the River Cats to three runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings. The right-hander struck out one without issuing a walk in his tenth turn in Tacoma s rotation this season. ONE-RUN FUN: The Rainiers played their third consecutive one-run game yesterday and it was their second win in a row. The Rainiers have now played five one-run games in their last eight and have posted a record of 4-1 in those contests. Tacoma is this season in one-run games and only Sacramento (25-19) has won more games, while Salt Lake (17-25) and Sacramento are the only PCL teams that have played in more one-run games than the Rainiers. HITTING THE MONTHER LODE: Designated hitter Jesus Montero enters tonight s game ranked first in Triple-A baseball with 32 RBI, first in the PCL in slugging (.747) and second in the league in hitting (.396/36x91) through 24 games played with Tacoma in the month of July. His RBI total stands as the most recorded by a Rainiers player in a single month since Mike Carp drove in 37 runs in 29 games with Tacoma in May of Montero currently ranks fourth in the PCL with 70 RBI this season. Montero hit.350 (7x20), with three runs, three extra-base hits and six RBI in Tacoma s last trip to Salt Lake (July 7-10). WALKING-OFF IN FASHION: Yesterday s walk-off win marked the second in as many games for the Rainiers after topping the River Cats 4-3 in 14 innings on Sunday. Of the 31 victories the Rainiers have recorded at home this season, ten have now been walk-offs. STINGING BACK: The Rainiers return to Smith s Ballpark for the second time this month after splitting a four-game series from July In the series the Rainiers outscored the Bees and hit.376 (61x162) as a team. The season series between the two teams is even at 6-6 and the Rainiers have not won a season series against the Bees since they went 12-4 in DOING AVERY-THING: Xavier Avery was one of only two players to collect multiple hits in yesterday s win and is now hitting.340 (17x50) with six extra-base hits and ten runs scored in his last 15 games. Dating back to July 12, Avery has stolen only three bases, but still ranks second in the league in stolen bases with 27 this season. That total is the most stolen bases by a Tacoma player since Chad Meyers swiped 37 bags in KELLY CRUSHING BEES: In 11 games against the Bees this season, Ty Kelly is hitting.378 (14x37) with 11 runs, 16 extra-base hits and 14 RBI this season. Kelly s 14 RBI against the Bees account for 21 percent of his 67 RBI this season and his four homers against the Bees account for 29 percent of his career-high 14 homers this year. To put those numbers in context, only 11 percent of Kelly s 102 games played this year have been against Salt Lake. THE ROAD AHEAD: Tonight s game is the first game of an eight-game road trip that features four game series against Pacific Southern Division opponents Salt Lake and Albuquerque. Tacoma has a (.429) recored against Pacific Southern Division foes and (.566) against everyone else.
