3 Bulldog Notes... GEORGIA RANKED SIXTH In the latest release of the national collegiate softball polls, Georgia was ranked as high as No. 6 in the USA Softball/ESPN.com poll. The Bulldogs were also ranked No. 8 in the NFCA/USA Today poll. DOT RICHARDSON S NATIONAL COLLEGIATE SOFTBALL INVITATIONAL Georgia opened its 2010 season at Dot Richardson s National Collegiate Softball Invitational in Clermont, Fla., Feb , and the Bulldog went 3-1 with wins over third-ranked Michigan, UCF and FAU while dropping a one-run contest to sixth-ranked UCLA. FIVE STRAIGHT WINS IN SEASON OPENING CONTESTS Georgia won its fifth-straight season opening contest by defeating third-ranked Michigan, 6-4, on Feb. 13 in Dot Richardson s National Collegiate Softball Invitational. It also marked the third-straight season opening game in which UGA has played a ranked opponent def. #3 Michigan, def. #20 Long Beach St., def. #8 DePaul, def. Wichita St., def. Arkansas, 7-6 (9) LONG HOME STAND Georgia s first home stand of the 2010 season will cover 21-games starting on Feb. 19 with the Red & Black Showcase and ending on March 17 against Furman. The home stand will include three home tournaments, a double-header with Florida, a three-game series with Alabama and the contest with Furman. The next road trip on the schedule will come March 20-21, when UGA travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to play the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. RED & BLACK SHOWCASE UGA will play at home for the first time this season as it serves host to the Red & Black Showcase, Feb , at the UGA Softball Stadium. Visiting teams for the tournament include Virginia Tech, who Georgia will play twice, Bowling Green, Western Carolina and Winthrop. Georgia s schedule for the tournament includes playing Virginia Tech and Bowling Green on Friday, Virginia Tech and Western Carolina on Saturday and Winthrop on Sunday. Against Virginia Tech, UGA leads the alltime series 2-1, but the Hokies won the last meeting in The Bulldogs won the only meeting in Athens in 2004 as well as the firstever meeting in When Georgia plays Bowling Green it will the first-ever meeting between the Dogs and Falcons. Against Western Carolina, Georgia leads the all-time series 2-0 with both meetings coming in Athens, first in in 2007 and then again last year. Against Winthrop, who has come to Athens every year since 2002 with the exception of 2008, Georgia leads the all-time series The Bulldogs won last year s contest, and the Eagles last won in the series in 2007, when the teams split a pair of games. HOME RUNS Six Bulldogs have combined to hit nine home runs through four games. Last year, Georgia set a school record with 85 home runs, and after four games the 2009 squad had also hit nine home runs. BACK-TO-BACK HOME RUNS Against UCF, Brianna Hesson and Ashley Razey became the first Bulldogs to hit backto-back home runs this season. Last year, the Dogs hit back-to-back home runs six times. BULLDOGS TIE SCHOOL RECORD FOR HOME RUNS IN A GAME On Feb. 13 vs. UCF, Georgia posted a five-home run outing matching the school record for home runs in a game. Brianna Hesson and Ashley Razey each hit two home runs in the game while Alisa Goler added a grand slam. The record had been establish on two previous occasions. First in 2003 vs. Southeastern Louisiana and then again in 2009 vs. IUPUI. McCLOUD HONORED Junior Sarah McCloud was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week (2/15) following the opening week of the 2010 season. McCloud made two appearances going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA. Against UCF, she tossed a five-inning, complete-game one-hit shutout with four strikeouts. She then went six shutout innings against Florida Atlantic scattering just four hits, walking none and striking out six. TWO FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICANS RETURN FOR JUNIOR SEASON; NAMED TO TOP 50 WATCHLIST Third-baseman Alisa Goler and centerfielder Taylor Schlopy return for their junior campaign in 2010 after both earned first-team All-America honors as sophomores last year. Goler and Schlopy were both tabbed to the 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Goler, a top 10 finalist for the 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award, set school records for batting average (.455), slugging percentage ( national leader), on-base percentage (.551), home runs (24), extra-base hits (41), runs-batted in (83), total bases (164), walk-to-strikeout ratio ( walks/6 strikeouts) and toughest to strikeout (0.036 = 6 strikeouts/165 at-bats) in She became just the second player in school history to lead in all of the triple crown categories - batting average, home runs and RBI. (Jessi Cerra 1997 & 1998). Schlopy led the Bulldogs in runs scored (71), walks (38), hit-by-pitch (14) and stolen bases (21-of-22) in If not for Goler s school record totals in slugging percentage and on-base percentage, Schlopy would have set new marks both those categories by slugging.819 with an on-base percentage of.550, both of which ranked second behind Goler in the SEC. Schlopy s SEC leading 71 runs scored last season ranks tied third-best in school history. In the role of leader hitter in 2009, Schlopy batted.526, slugged and reached base at a.686 clip. SCHLOPY NAMED USA ALTERNATE Following a tryout in January, Schlopy was named an alternate for the 2010 USA Softball Women s National Team. A BIG PORTION OF THE OFFENSE IS BACK IN 2010 In addition to the seven returning hitters, Georgia also returns junior Jennie Auger and sophomore Brittney Hubbard. In 2009, those nine players combined to hit.325 and slug.628 while also combining for the following percentages of Georgia s offensive output: Runs 67.8% 253/373 Hits 74.5% 345/463 Doubles 84.0% 68/81 Triples 64.7% 11/17 Home Runs 90.6% 77/85 RBI 95.0% 325/342 Total Bases 80.0% 666/833 Walks 78.5% 150/191 Stolen Bases 62.8% 49/78 10TH SEASON UNDER HARRIS-CHAMPER Georgia enters its 10th season under the leadership of Lu Harris-Champer. Through her first nine seasons in Athens, Harris- Champer has guided the Bulldogs to a record and eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances including the program s first Women s College World Series berth last year. McALLISTER BACK IN RED & BLACK Megan McAllister is in her first season as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs. A fouryear Georgia letterwinner, McAllister spent one season as a volunteer coach at UGA and one season as an assistant coach at Wingate University before returning Athens. SCHNAKE GOES PRO, RETURNS TO SCHOOL AS STUDENT COACH Kristin Schnake, the starting shortstop on the 2009 Georgia squad, turned pro last summer playing for the USSSA Pride batting.225 with nine runs scored. Schnake returned to school in the fall and will assist the Bulldogs as a student coach while she pursues a Master s degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics. SEC PRESEASON COACHES POLL In the annual SEC Coaches Preseason Poll, Georgia was predicted to finish second in the Eastern Division and received one vote for the SEC Champion Eastern Division 1. Arkansas (54 points) Conference Champion Votes: Alabama (6), Florida (3), Georgia (1), LSU (1) PRESEASON RANKINGS In the preseason polls, Georgia was tabbed No. 7 by NFCA/USA Today and No. 8 by USA Softball/ESPN.com. The No. 7 ranking matched the 2004 squad for the best preseason ranking in school history. Georgia s 2010 schedule also features eight teams which were ranked in both of the preseason polls including Michigan, UCLA, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia Tech and Florida State.

5 The Pitching Staff... McCLOUD IN 2010 McCloud started 2010 by earning SEC Pitcher of the Week honors in the season s first week after she one-hit UCF in five-innings and limited FAU to four hits and went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 11 IP. McCLOUD s 2009 SEASON McCloud appeared in 32 games making 27 starts. She was second on the team lead in wins (17), complete games (10) and shutouts (7.5). She tallied innings. McCloud combined with Christie Hamilton to no-hit Arkansas on May 3. McCloud started and pitched the first 1.2 innings. In the Easton Challenge, McCloud was named to the All-Tournament team after pitching a pair of complete-game shutouts to defeat #24 Baylor and #1 Washington. McCLOUD S 2008 SEASON Sarah McCloud posted a 14-7 record with two saves while compiling a 2.16 ERA in 37 appearances as a freshman in She started a team-high 30 games and the Bulldogs went 23-7 in those contests. McCloud also finished with a team-leading 11 complete games, which included a combined perfect game against Mercer. Mc- Cloud tossed the first four innings of the perfect game while former Bulldog Kate Gaskill worked the final inning of the five-inning game. McCloud also garnered a SEC Freshman of the Week award in Georgia played five games for the week of March 26-30, and McCloud started and earned the victory in each game. In four of the five starts for McCloud went for complete games. For that week, she posted a 0.90 ERA allowing Ole Miss to score just two runs and the Arkansas to score just three, two of which were earned. The Georgia Softball Stadium has been chosen to host three NCAA Regionals and one NCAA Super Regional since its inception in Both the Georgia and visiting team dugout are connected via tunnel to locker rooms. The Bulldogs locker room has all facilities located in it an athletic training room, players lounge and locker room, showers, and the coaches offices and locker room. On the first base side, the visiting team has its locker room and showers along with the umpires locker room. A state-of-the-art press box was built as well. The press box has suites for radio, television, and for both Georgia and the visiting team s athletic director. The stadium is finished with an awning covering the upper section. Georgia s stadium ranks among the nation s best and will continue to be an attractive site for NCAA postseason play for years to come.
