2 The Week Ahead UWM opens its Horizon League season with a four-game series at Wright State. The Panthers were scheduled to face UW- Parkside in a doubleheader Wednesday in Milwaukee but the games were postponed. A Peek At The Opponent The Raiders have struggled so far this season, standing 8-18 overall and 0-4 in the Horizon League after being swept by Butler this past weekend. They stand second-to-last in the league in hitting and third-to-last in pitching, though senior Chris Tuttle leads the league in hitting with a.388 batting average. Two of WSU s pitchers have also performed well early in the year. While splitting duty in the rotation and out of the bullpen, J.P. Jung has a 2.94 ERA, while starter Aaron Braden has won three games and has a 3.41 ERA. UWM won three of four games from Wright State last season and also won three of four in its last trip to Dayton two years ago. Last Time Out UWM continued its winning ways in Major League ballparks, sweeping a doubleheader from Valparaiso at Miller Park Saturday, 8-4 and 6-0. The Panthers rallied for the win in the first game before a dominating performance on the mound by Mikel Schaefer gave UWM a convincing win in the second game. Ben Stanczyk had four RBI in the opener while David Michna had three hits and two RBI in the nightcap. Also last week, UWM fell to Northern Iowa on Monday and split a doubleheader with Bradley on Wednesday. Schaefer Is Super UWM s Mikel Schaefer posted a stellar performance on the mound Saturday in a 6-0 win over Valpo and nearly collected a no-hitter. Schaefer allowed just one hit and that hit was a bloop double down the right-field line that was nearly caught by second baseman Charlie Reschke. Schaefer also struck out seven batters. This came just six days after he set a career-high and tied a school record by striking out 12 Northern Iowa batters March 30 in game two of a doubleheader. Quintin Oldenburg struck out 12 batters against Detroit last season. The 15 total strikeouts UWM pitchers recorded in the game set a new school record. Miller Time UWM moved its Miller Park record to 4-0 and its record in Major League stadiums to 8-0 with its doubleheader sweep of Valparaiso this past Saturday. Last season the Panthers swept Bradley at Miller Park before winning four-straight games at Jacobs Field in Cleveland during the Horizon League Tournament. Finally Home UWM s doubleheader with Valpo wrapped up a stretch of 17- straight games away from home to start the season for the Panthers. UWM would have played more games away from home, but had five games wiped out by bad weather. On Base Again Troy Doering walked in his final at bat Saturday, extending his streak of reaching base safely to 54-straight games. He has an on-base percentage of.416 so far and is tied for second on the team with four stolen bases. He has also scored 22 runs, the fifth-most in the Horizon League. Stanczyk Steps Up Along with strong work on the mound, sophomore Ben Stanczyk is making it difficult to take his name off the lineup card in the field. Stanczyk is hitting.407 and went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader sweep of Valpo Saturday. Stanczyk has moved into a regular role as the starting third baseman. A Big Hit UWM s Jeff Pitrof tied a school record when he was hit by a pitch three times in the first game of the doubleheader with Valpo Saturday. Panther batters have been hit 17 times this season. Plenty Of Offense UWM s win over Bradley last Wednesday in the second game of a doubleheader had plenty of offensive highlights. The Panthers scored eight runs in the sixth inning - a season high. Jeff Pitrof drove in five runs and Dave Pudlosky had three hits an drove in four runs. The Panther offense has been coming around as the season has progressed. UWM has 136 runs in 19 games and the Panthers are now hitting.294 as a team - their highest mark of the season to date. Doubling A Record Dave Pudlosky is already on pace to smash the single-season UWM record for doubles in a season. He has collected nine in 19 games. The school record is 20, set by Steve Tylke and Chad Sadowski in Honoring Reschke Second baseman Charlie Reschke was named the Horizon League Player of the Week two weeks ago after a strong performance at the Homestead Challenge. Reschke hit.429 with a home run and eight RBI at the Challenge. He recorded three, three-hit games, plus a two-hit effort. Reschke went 3-for-5 in back-to-back games against St. Peters and then had three more hits against Stony Brook before a three RBI effort against Harvard. He is hitting.338 for the season. Outburst UWM s 27-7 win over St. Peters on March 19 was a record-

setter for the Panthers. The 27 runs equaled the most runs UWM has ever scored against a Division I opponent and fell just short of the 28 UWM scored against Concordia in 1993.

UWM scored nine times in the first inning of the contest. Hit Parade UWM collected 25 hits in its 27-7 win over St. Peters and a number of individuals posted career days. Jeff Pitrof went 4-for-5 with five RBI, while Dave Pudlosky went 3-for-6 with five RBI and Matt Curran went 2-for-4 with five RBI. In all, five players had at least three hits for the Panthers. Fresh Faces... Great Results UWM s bullpen has been sparked by a pair of newcomers. True freshman Leroy Pederson has yet to allow an earned run in six appearances while transfer Jay Molstad has a 2.84 ERA in seven appearances. Polling Place UWM has been picked to win the 2003 Horizon League Championship, according to a poll of the League s head coaches. The Panthers earned four first-place votes and 34 points overall to edge out UIC. The Familiar Faces A number of familiar faces do return for a Panther team that is bringing back five position-playing starters, three starting pitchers and 18 letterwinners. Seniors Dave Pudlosky, David Michna and Troy Doering lead the position players, while senior Geoff Lefeber and junior Aaron Bushong lead the starting pitchers. The New Faces UWM s opening-day roster included 11 new faces, though a handful of those players may redshirt for the upcoming season. Sam Jansen is the most-anticipated of the newcomers. Jansen, a transfer from Waukesha County Technical College, sat out last year but led the JUCO ranks in batting during his freshman year. Meanwhile, transfers Steve Sanfilippo (Central Michigan), Jeremy Wilson (Austin Peay), Marcellus Dawson (Nebraska) and Jay Molstad (Indiana State) all started the 2003 season with Division I experience under their belts. Last Year s Honorees A number of Panthers were honored by the Horizon League last year. John Vanden Berg, Steve Guden and Troy Doering were named to the All-Horizon League First Team while Adam Christ, Quintin Oldenburg and Dave Pudlosky were named to the second team. Christ, Doering, David Michna and Geoff Lefeber were named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team. UWM also placed five players on the Horizon League All-Tournament Team last year - MVP Dave Pudlosky, Quintin Oldenburg, Geoff Lefeber, John Vanden Berg and Charlie Reschke. Up Next UWM plays at Minnesota Wednesday before welcoming Butler for a four-game series starting Friday. HEAD COACH JERRY AUGUSTINE Winning has become a way of life for the UWM baseball program since Jerry Augustine became head coach in In 2002, Augustine led the Panthers to their third league tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearances in four years. UWM has also won a pair of regular season league championships. In 2001, Milwaukee won a school-record 39 games, while posting an impressive 16-4 record in league play. When Augustine won his 200th game late in the regular season, he became the first UWM coach in any sport to win 200 games exclusively on the Division I level. Augustine s efforts have not gone unrecognized, as the head coach has been honored as the league coach of the year three times. In eight years at the helm for the Panthers, Augustine has won a school-record 241 games and is the only coach in school history to have a winning career record ( ). The Panthers recorded a breakthrough year in 1998, when UWM won 33 games. The Panthers then added to their growing tradition by qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and upsetting top-ranked Rice before bowing out of the tournament. Prior to being named head coach, Augustine served as the Panthers pitching coach for one season. Before joining the Panther coaching staff, Augustine was more widely remembered as being a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers from In 10 seasons in the majors, Augustine went and boasted a 4.26 ERA. In 1976, he put together a 9-12 record and 3.30 ERA on his way to being named to the All-Rookie Team. His best season came in 1978 when he won 13 games in a starting role. Augustine was born in Green Bay and grew up in nearby Kewaunee. He attended Kewaunee High School, where he played baseball, football and basketball. He played collegiate baseball at UW-LaCrosse, lettering three seasons, before being drafted by the Brewers in Augustine is joined on the UWM staff by Scott Doffek, Todd Frohwirth and Steve Guden. Doffek handles the Panther hitters and UWM has regularly set school records on offense while under Doffek s direction. Frohwirth, a former standout for the Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles, among others, is the Panthers pitching coach. UWM has set a new school record for ERA in each of the last two seasons. Guden recently completed a stellar two-year career at UWM and is on the staff as a student assistant coach.
