Most recently, the Wildcats split a fourgame series at Cal State East Bay, winning games one and three. They dropped from a No. 7 national ranking last week all the way down to 20 this week. CSUC played its first 16 league games on the road and won 12 of them. Chico is 12-3 at home and 15-7 on the road. The Wildcats are batting.302 while holding opponents to.252. They hold a 207 to 138 advantage in runs and a 3.55 to 4.82 edge in ERA. Third baseman Adrian Bringas, last week s NCBWA West Region Player of the Week, leads the team with his.405 average, 53 hits, 11 doubles, 25 RBI,.511 slugging % and.467 on-base %. He also leads the CCAA in batting average. Four other regulars are also hitting over.300 for the season. On the mound, Nick Baker is 7-1 with a 3.05 ERA in a team-high 56 innings pitched. Kevin Brahney has a team-best 52 strikeouts, while reliever Juan Guerra has saved 11 games. Five staff members are undefeated with at least two wins each.

2 ON THE WESTERN FRONT The NCAA released its first regional rankings of the season on Apr. 20 and the Tritons topped the list in the West. Other CCAA squads in the West rankings include Chico State at two, Sonoma State at four, Cal Poly Pomona at fifth, Cal State L.A. sixth and Cal State San Bernardino seventh. The other teams ranked No. 1 are Millersville (Atlantic), West Florida (South), Winona State (Central), Mount Olive (Southeast), Wilmington (East), Central Missouri (South Central) and Grand Valley State (Midwest). STREAKING UCSD has won its last nine games dating back to Apr. 9 at Sonoma State. It s the team s longest winning streak since it was victorious in 13 straight between Apr. 16 and May 7 of The Tritons actually had a 19 game win streak last season that started on Feb. 20 vs. Chico State and ended on Mar. 27 against Cal Poly Pomona. HITS AND RUNS UCSD has won its last three games by a combined score of The 18 runs against Cal State Stanislaus was a season-high, as were the 18 hits in that game and in the second game against Academy of Art. The Tritons have banged out 52 hits over the three-game span, 19 of those going for extra bases with 13 doubles, a triple and six home runs. Opponents have managed just 10 hits while making nine errors in the field. LEAGUE LEADERS After winning its last nine games, UCSD now leads the CCAA in many statistical categories including runs, doubles, triples, RBI, slugging percentage, on-base percentage and hit by pitch. Pitching-wise, the Tritons are tops in ERA and walks allowed. Individually, Tim Shibuya leads all conference players in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and walks allowed. Reliever Elias Tuma has a CCAA-high 19 appearances. STAFF DAZE The Tritons threw a staff day in both games against Acadmy of Art, using 12 pitchers to hold the Urban Knights to three runs and seven hits. Tim Shibuya went 5.0 innings in game one and earned his eighth win of the year. Taylor Austin, Greg Selarz, Tony York and Daniel Simmons combined to toss four scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit. Guido Knudson improved to 6-3 with a three-inning win in Saturday s second game. Justin Burns, Jeff Rauh, Eric Abraham, Richard Kilbury, Simmons and Elias Tuma each pitched an inning to finish the game, giving up a single run on four hits. Over their last five games, Triton pitchers have let in just four earned runs while striking out 37 and walking eight. GREAT SCOTT Redshirt freshman Scott Liske had a career weekend against Academy of Art. The outfielder went 3-for-5 with a run and four RBI. He doubled in the first game and cracked his first career home run in game two, a two-run shot to right. Liske came on as a pinch runner in the opening game and earned the first start of his career in the second contest. He entered the series with just eight career at-bats and now has an RBI and an extra base hit in each of his last three games. GRANT RANT Infielder Grant Bauer, who s only been playing since Mar. 24 due to injury, appears to have broken out of his slump at the plate. The senior is 5-for-7 with three runs and five RBI over his last three games. In the second game against Academy of Art, Bauer had three hits with a run and three RBI. Prior to the Apr. 17 game vs. Cal State Stanislaus, he had just five hits and zero RBI in 11 starts. GONE HOLLYWOOD Nick La Face has taken over as UCSD s leader in average, slugging and on-base percentage. He holds a team-best five game hit streak and has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games with a.422 average over that span. The North Hollywood, California, native has produced at least one RBI in seven of his last nine games. DANIEL BOON Following about a month and a half off to nurse some shoulder soreness, right-hander Daniel Simmons took the mound in a relief role on Sunday, Apr. 17 against Cal State Stanislaus. He came on in the seventh and threw two scoreless and hitless innings, striking out one Warrrior batter. In fact, he retired all six hitters he saw in order, four by ground balls. The last time Simmons had taken the mound was Mar. 5 vs. San Francisco State. He also threw one relief inning in each of the games against Academy of Art. SAVING ACE Junior reliever Elias Tuma has been on fire this season. He holds a 1.19 ERA over a league-high 19 appearances and has saved six games, including four in his last five outings. Tuma matched a career-high with four strikeouts in game one against Stanislaus and has surrendered only one earned run in his last 12 appearances. For his career, the junior has amassed nine saves, five short of the school record 14, set by Keith Noe in SOUNDING LIKE A BROKEN RECORD Starting pitcher Tim Shibuya broke a third UCSD career record on Apr. 15, becoming the school s all-time leader in strikeouts after fanning four against Cal State Stanislaus. Currently, Shibuya has 290 Ks since 2008, topping the old record of 283 by Rick Nowak between 1986 and Earlier this season, Shibuya broke records for career wins and innings pitched. He currently leads the CCAA in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and walks allowed. 10 HEAD COACH DAN O BRIEN RECORD BREAKDOWN 2010 NCBWA National Coach of the Year 2010 ABCA/Rawlings West Region Coach of the Year 2010 NCBWA West Region Coach of the Year 2010 CCAA Coach of the Year 2010 FieldTurf Coach of the Year 2009 NCBWA National Coach of the Year 2009 ABCA/Rawlings West Region Coach of the Year 2009 CCAA Coach of the Year In 13 seasons as head coach, Dan O Brien has led Triton baseball to unprecedented heights and built UCSD into one of premier programs at the NCAA Division II level. He is easily the winningest coach in program history, entering the 2011 campaign with a career record of (.606), and has been honored as national coach of the year twice. Over the past seven seasons, O Brien s Tritons have made two NCAA Division II National Championship appearances, set a school record for wins four times, and posted an overall winning percentage of.678. Under O Brien s guidance, the Tritons have earned berths in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament seven years running, winning the tournament title in 2005, 2009 and again in UCSD has also made four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and claimed back-to-back West Regional titles the past two seasons. After a going and advancing to the D-II College World Series for the first time in 2009, UCSD was even better last season. The Tritons recorded a remarkable overall record of the best mark in program history -- and went on to capture conference regular season, CCAA Tournament and West Regional titles for the second year in a row. The top-ranked Tritons returned to Cary, N.C., where they defeated No. 4 Georgia College & State, No. 3 Central Missouri, and No. 13 Franklin Pierce to reach the national championship game unscathed. Despite the perfect week, UCSD would come up short in the final game, losing a 6-4 heartbreaker to ninth-ranked Southern Indiana.
