Senior righty Tim Shibuya recently became UCSD s all-time leader in pitching wins. The Wyoming native entered the season with 29 victories, needing one more to tie the record and two more to make it his own. He tied it on Feb. 4 with a win over Western Oregon and set the new mark on Feb. 11 against No. 17 Mesa State, picking up a 6-1 victory in La Jolla (6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K). The former record of 30 wins was set by Trevor Decker between 2006 and Last season, Shibuya, an All-American, set a new single season record with 13 wins. Sim City Daniel Simmons was named the CCAA Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after moving to 2-0 with a complete game, two-hit shutout of No. 17 Mesa State on Feb. 12. The senior right-hander struck out seven and walked two in the seven inning game. Simmons retired the side in order in four of the first five innings. Start Me Up At 7-1, UCSD is close to its best 10-game start since the program moved to NCAA Division II in Last season, the Tritons went 9-1 to open the year, then dropped a pair to Chico State before winning their next 19 contests. UCSD s season opening tilt against Western Oregon on Feb. 4 was the 1,600th game in the history of the program, which began in Entering this weekend, the Tritons are , good for a.518 winning percentage. LEEving the Injury List All-American catcher Kellen Lee missed the first seven games of the year with an injury, but returned on Feb. 13 against Mesa State. He went 1-for-3 with two RBI and smacked an RBI single in his first at-bat. He also threw out a potential base stealer in the first inning. Lee started 41 games behind the plate for UCSD in 2010.

The Pioneers have hosted all seven games, losing two of three against Vanguard and winning just one of four games v. Central Washington. Third baseman Nick McManus has a teambest.385 average at the plate and also leads the Pioneers in at-bats (26), hits (10), doubles (5), RBI (7), total bases (15), and slugging percentage (.577). Three other players are batting north of.300 including Lincoln Clapper (.348), Jake Davis (.333) and Jared Berrier (.320). CSUEB is hitting just.252 as a team compared to.320 for opponents. On the mound, A.J. Gallardo and Bryce Miller have wins, while Nolan Cassidy has registered a save. Opponents are out-scoring the Pioneers Saul, Shibuya Named to Tino Award Watch List Outfielder Kyle Saul and starting pitcher Tim Shibuya have been named to the initial watch list for the 2011 Tino Martinez Award, bestowed upon the most outstanding player in NCAA Division II baseball. A total of 90 players were named to the list. The annual award, now in its second year, is named after the former University of Tampa Spartan, Olympian and Major League Baseball All-Star Tino Martinez. Other CCAA players named to the list include third baseman Abel Medina and outfielder Kevin Pillar of Cal State Dominguez Hills, second baseman Jackson Evans from Chico State and shortstop Alex Todd of Sonoma State. The list will be updated in mid April. Semifinalists are scheduled to be announced on May 7 with the finalists to be named on May 19. After the finalists are named fans will be once again be invited to vote online at tinoaward.com to help determine the winner, which will be announced after the conclusion of the College World Series on June 4. The inaugural winner was Bryan Fogle of Erskine College. Light Em if You Got Em UCSD recently completed a successful campaign to bring lights to Triton Ballpark. A lighting ceremony was held on Saturday, Jan. 29 and was followed by the first ever night game at the venue - an exhibition versus Point Loma Nazarene. The first official game under the lights was against Western Oregon on Friday, Feb. 4. Including preseason games, the Tritons are 4-0 so far while playing in artificial light at Triton Ballpark. He is easily the winningest coach in program history, entering the 2011 campaign with a career record of (.606), and has been honored as national coach of the year twice. Over the past seven seasons, O Brien s Tritons have made two NCAA Division II National Championship appearances, set a school record for wins four times, and posted an overall winning percentage of.678. Under O Brien s guidance, the Tritons have earned berths in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament seven years running, winning the tournament title in 2005, 2009 and again in UCSD has also made four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances and claimed back-to-back West Regional titles the past two seasons. After a going and advancing to the D-II College World Series for the first time in 2009, UCSD was even better last season. The Tritons recorded a remarkable overall record of the best mark in program history -- and went on to capture conference regular season, CCAA Tournament and West Regional titles for the second year in a row. The top-ranked Tritons returned to Cary, N.C., where they defeated No. 4 Georgia College & State, No. 3 Central Missouri, and No. 13 Franklin Pierce to reach the national championship game unscathed. Despite the perfect week, UCSD would come up short in the final game, losing a 6-4 heartbreaker to ninth-ranked Southern Indiana. The Tritons set a total of 19 program records in 2010, including most wins (54), fewest losses (8), highest batting average (.367), hits (794), runs scored (551) and runs batted in (502). O Brien reached a major milestone of his own during the season, recording career win No. 400 on April 30 following a 19-3 rout at San Francisco State. O Brien s squads have posted the top fielding percentage in the nation each of the last three seasons (including a school record.984 in 2010) and he coached two-time National Defensive Player Year Vance Albitz in 2009 and In addition, last year s squad had six ABCA/Rawlings All-Americans and two National Gold Glove winners. All told, 33 Tritons have earned All-West Region accolades since UCSD moved to Division II in 2001, while 63 student-athletes have been named to All-CCAA teams. O Brien was named head coach of the Tritons following the 1998 season, when he served as the interim head coach. He led UCSD to a record in his first season, as that team broke a total of five school records. In 1999, UCSD again posted a winning record, going overall, followed by an impressive campaign in 2000, the team s final year of Division III competition. After graduating from UCSD with a degree in Communications in 1995, O Brien served as an assistant for former head coach Lyle Yates before joining him in Greenville, Miss. as a player/coach with the Greenville Bluesman. O Brien helped guide the minor league club to the 1996 Big South League Championship, before returning to UCSD for the 1997 season as an assistant under Robert Fletcher. O Brien played two seasons for UCSD in , leading the Tritons to a 33-8 record and a third place finish at the Division III College World Series in his first year with the team. He led the team in home runs, was a two-time team captain and won the John Rolph Memorial Award.
