For the second time in school history, the Sonoma State baseball team captured the NCAA Division II West Region title last weekend in La Jolla, California. The No. 4 seed Seawolves knocked off No. 3 seed Cal Poly Pomona in Sunday s championship game, 8-5, at Triton Ballpark on the campus of UC San Diego. The host Tritons, who came into last weekend s regional as the No. 6 team in the nation and the top-seed in the West, was eliminated by CPP, propelling the Broncos into the title game with the Seawolves. SSU also defeated UCSD in the tournament, thanks to a complete game shutout by senior pitcher Kenny Arnerich in Friday s opening round action. Sonoma State last won the West Region title in SEAWOLVES TO MAKE SECOND WORLD SERIES APPEARANCE It will be Sonoma State s second-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship Tournament. In 2008 at Sauget, Illinois, the Seawolves participated in the longest game recorded in NCAA Division II Baseball Championship history, outlasting Southern Missouri, 6-5, in 19 innings; a game that lasted six hours, 45 minutes. Senior Kyle Jones, a freshman that season, played in that game, going 0-for-4. Senior Cameron Cook is the only other player on this year s roster that played for Sonoma State in 2008, but did not compete in the World Series, due to injury. The Seawolves won their first two games in the final tournament that season (a 10-1 win over Shippensburg and the aforementioned 6-5 victory over Southern Missouri in 19 innings) before losing a pair of games to Ouachita Baptist, both by 2-1 scores. FIRST ROUND OPPONENT: TOP-RANKED GRAND VALLEY STATE The Seawolves face a tall order in their first game at the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships this weekend. Sonoma State will take on No. 1 ranked Grand Valley State, who has a 52-3 record and are winners of 32 straight games and 46 of their last 47 games.. The Midwest Champions out of Allendale, Michigan have 10 players with a batting average over.300. and seven pitchers with an earned run average under three. The Lakers haven t lost since April 9 -- a 6-1 loss to Saginaw Valley State. The Seawolves and Lakers have never faced each other in their respective histories.

HISTORY IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT This year marks the 11th time that Sonoma State has qualified for NCAA Division II postseason play, advancing to the NCAA Championship tournament one other time (2008). The Seawolves (known as the Cossacks up until the 2002 season) are overall in the NCAA tournament, including 12-5 in their last three appearances (2008, 2009 and 2011). In those 11 appearances, Sonoma State had reached the regional championship game six times, advancing to the World Series just twice, including this season. GOELZ NAMED ABCA WEST REGION COACH OF THE YEAR After leading Sonoma State to its second-ever NCAA Division II West Region title this past weekend, head coach John Goelz has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) West Region Coach of the Year. Goelz, in his 26th season with Sonoma State, has earned West Region Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his career. He earned his first Coach of the Year award after the Seawolves captured their first region title in SONOMA STATE PLACES FOUR ON ABCA ALL-WEST REGION TEAM Junior first baseman O Koyea Dickson, senior short stop Alex Todd and senior pitcher Kenny Arnerich earned American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) First Team All-West Region honors while senior outfielder Kyle Jones received a Second Team All-West Region nod. Both Dickson and Jones also earned Gold Glove awards this season at their respective positions. All four players earned All-West Region recognition in both the Daktronics, Inc. and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer s Association (NCBWA) programs as well. JONES BECOMES SONOMA STATE HIT KING With a team-leading 70 hits this season, senior Kyle Jones has become the all-time hits leader in Sonoma State baseball history, accumulating 229 career hits, topping former SSU student-athlete Derek Bell s record of 228 ( ). Jones also holds career records in games played (203) and started (194), at bats (686), doubles (55) and walks (109). With 163 career runs batted in, he needs just 13 more to tie Derek Bell s record of 176. A career.334 hitter, Jones leads the team this season with a.380 batting average, 19 doubles, three triples and 52 runs batted in. The native of Thousand Oaks was a First Team All-CCAA pick this season as well as a Daktronics, Inc. and NCBWA Second Team selection. He also earned a Gold Glove in the outfield by the ABCA after sporting a.984 fielding percentage with just two errors in 125 chances. ARNERICH THE ACE Senior Kenny Arnerich has become the ace of the Sonoma State pitching staff in his first and only season with the Seawolves, sporting a 9-2 record with a 2.93 earned run average. He earned a complete game shutout victory over sixth-ranked UC San Diego in the opening round of the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament last Friday, allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out one. Arnerich then appeared in relief on just two days rest, earning the regional title-clinching 8-5 victory over Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday -- he tossed two and two-thirds innings, not allowing a run and scattering three hits. Arnerich was honored with a First Team All-CCAA selection as well as a First Team Daktronics, Inc. and an ABCA selection as well as a Honorable Mention NCBWA selection. DICKSON IS DYNAMITE In his first season with Sonoma State, junior O Koyea Dickson has become one of the biggest offensive threats for the Seawolves in He hit.340 this season and was second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in home runs (10) and runs scored (58). He was third in the conference with 49 runs batted in. The junior from San Francisco has 69 hits, including 11 doubles and one triple while leading the team in slugging percentage at.552. Dickson earned the region s Gold Glove award at first base, sporting a.986 fielding percentage with just seven errors in 492 chances. He was also a First Team pick on the CCAA, Daktronics, Inc. and NCBWA teams as well as being named the CCAA Newcomer of the Year. SUCCESS AT THE CCAA TOURNAMENT Sonoma State has won more CCAA Tournament titles than any other baseball program since the event s inception in Overall, the Seawolves have taken five titles (1999, 2001, 2003, 2007, 2008). The Seawolves made their ninth appearance in the event this season, but lost the first two games and were eliminated. They ve made the four-team field in three of the last four seasons, despite missing it in SEAWOLVES IN THE PROS Since head coach John Goelz took over the baseball program in 1986, Sonoma State has sent 75 players on to the pros. In 2004, SSU made waves when they had four players selected in the first eleven rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft, and since that season, 15 players have heard their name called on Draft Day. Only three of those 75 players have been called up to the show, however. Marshall Brant (INF) debut with the New York Yankees on Oct. 1, 1980, Daniel Barone (RHP) played with the Florida Marlins after his debut on Aug. 10, 2007 and Tommy Everidge (1B) began with the Oakland Athletics on July 28, 2009.

With a career record of , Goelz is the winningest coach in any sport in SSU history. He is also among the top ten active Division II coaches in the nation in wins and winning percentage. And while, Sonoma State is nationally renowned as an elite program now, that wasn t always the case. After taking over a Sonoma State team in 1986 that had won just 50 games over the previous six seasons combined, Goelz wasted little time turning the school into a winner. Following an eighteen-win season in 1986 (the most wins in school history), Goelz delivered the school s first winning campaign in 1987 with a record. Winning seasons have become common place ever since, with 20 in his last 25 seasons. Goelz has seen 17 of his players go on to earn All- American honors and has coached eight conference player of the year award winners and five conference pitcher of the year honorees. Goelz, himself, has earned conference coach of the year honors seven times (1990, 1991, 1992, 1998, 2001, 2007, 2008). As proud of these accomplishments as Coach Goelz is, he is just as proud of the fact that Sonoma State baseball boasts one of the best graduation rates in the conference. Numerous ballplayers have earned All-Academic distinction and in 2007, Paige Dumont became just the third Academic All-America selection in Sonoma State history. A pitcher during his playing days at San Francisco State, Goelz went on to be an assistant at San Francisco State to Al Figone from and to Orrin Freeman from Freeman is currently the Assistant General Manager of the Florida Marlins. During his time at SF State, the Gators enjoyed their greatest success, ranking in the national top twenty four times and participating in the NCAA West Regionals on three different occasions. From , Goelz was the varsity baseball coach at Albany High School, where he was also a teacher. After a third-place finish in 1984, Goelz led his team to the Alameda County Athletic League championship, finishing the season with an 18-8 mark and a final East Bay ranking of 12th. Goelz resides in Rohnert Park with his sons John and Matthew.
