The Ohio State softball team resumes Big Ten play when it visits Michigan State for a three-game weekend series. Action starts at 6 p.m. Friday. The Buckeyes and Spartans will battle live on the Big Ten Network at 11 a.m. Saturday before closing the series Sunday at 1 p.m. BUCKEYE BREAKDOWN Ohio State is coming off a 4-3 win over Ohio Tuesday night to wrap up its non-conference schedule. The Buckeyes are on the year and 9-5 in the Big Ten. Ashley Prange had her eighth game with multiple hits and RBI. She drove in three of Ohio State s four runs and was a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk, slugging thanks to a solo home run and two-rbi single. Ohio State checked in at No. 40 in this week s NCAA RPI. Overall, the Big Ten came in with the fourth-best conference RPI. Morgan Ray is second in the Big Ten in opposing batting average with a.171 clip. She also ranks eighth with 120 strikeouts and ninth behind a 2.13 ERA. Emily Clark ranks in the top 12 of multiple categories in the conference, including slugging percentage (.664), total bases (83), RBI (35), doubles (13) and home runs (8). Lilli Piper joins Clark in the Big Ten rankings.391 batting average (5th), 15 stolen bases (7th),.480 on-base percentage (8th), 50 hits (8th), 22 walks (t-9th) and 33 runs scored (t-12th). Claire Nicholson is making her mark as Ohio State s starting catcher and has caught 16 stealing, the best mark in the Big Ten. Lilli Piper paces the conference with 121 assists and stands second in fielding double plays (12). Defensively, the Buckeyes have caught 17 stealing (1st) and fielded 21 double plays (3rd). In Big Ten games only, Lilli Piper has 23 hits (1st) and is batting.511 (4th) with a.600 on-base percentage (3rd). Lauren Rice is fourth with six wins and fifth thanks to a 2.43 ERA. Ohio State is 10-4 when scoring in the first inning and 18-0 when holding opponents to two runs or less. The Buckeyes have outscored their opponents SCOUTING REPORT Michigan State is on a three-game skid after dropping games to a pair of ranked opponents, Minnesota and Michigan. Charla Echols is batting.377 with 43 hits, 30 runs scored and 23 RBI. In the circle, Alli Walker is 8-10 in 30 appearances. She has a 4.38 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 96 innings of work. SERIES HISTORY Ohio State owns a record in the all-time series vs. Michigan State. The Buckeyes swept last year s series in Columbus, outscoring the Spartans by a 22-9 margin. It was the first time since 2015 that OSU had taken all three games from MSU. PRO BUCKS Seniors Lilli Piper and Emily Clark were selected in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, of the National Pro Fastpitch College Draft on Monday night. The Cleveland Comets drafted Piper and Clark with the No. 15 and No. 16 overall picks. Two selections in the draft are the most in one year in Ohio State s program history. The duo joins Sam Marder and Alicia Herron, who were drafted to the then Akron Racers in 2010 and 2012, respectively.

2 WALK IT OFF Ohio State had a 2-1 walk-off victory in the series finale vs. No. 21/18 Michigan on April 13. The Buckeyes handed the Wolverines their first loss in Big Ten play, snapping their 17-game win streak. Ashley Prange knocked a solo home run to tie the game and force extra innings, setting up Bri Betschel, who hit the gamewinning RBI single in the eighth. In the circle, Morgan Ray fanned a season-high 10 batters to pick up OSU s fourth win over a ranked opponent this season. TV TIME Bri Betschel s bases-loaded diving catch in right field was featured at No. 9 on SportsCenter s Top 10 (Apr. 13). She is the first Buckeye to make SC s Top 10 since Taylor White on Apr. 27, IN THE CIRCLE With 40 games under its belt, Ohio State s pitching staff ranks 16th nationally and fifth in the Big Ten with a combined 2.13 ERA. The hurlers have held opponents to a.216 batting average, the fifth-best mark in the league. The Buckeyes have also allowed the fifth-fewest hits among the conferences teams. SOMETHIN EXTRA Bri Betschel extended her hitting streak to six games. Emily Clark has reached base safely in the last 11 contests. Lilli Piper paces the Buckeyes with 14 multihit games while Ashley Prange has eight outings with multiple RBI. SWING FOR THE FENCE The Buckeyes have connected on 39 home runs so far this season. Ohio State has at least one homer in 23 games, including three grand slams. The under classmen are responsible for 27 home runs, led by Kaitlyn Coffman with eight. B1G TIME WINS For the first time since the 2015 season, Ohio State swept its series with No. 22/20 Indiana to open its Big Ten slate. By taking all three games against the Hoosiers, the Buckeyes secured their first sweep of a ranked opponent since Apr , 2014 when they bested No. 25 Northwestern. HOME COOKING After hosting Ohio, Ohio State improved to at Buckeye Field over the last seven seasons. The Buckeyes have won a minimum of 10 games at home in each of the past six years. B1G MEDAL OF HONOR FINALIST Senior shortstop Lilli Piper was one of five female Ohio State student-athletes named Big Ten Medal of Honor finalists on Wednesday night. The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their college career. It is the highest honor a student competing in conference athletics can achieve in the Big Ten. SMARTY BUCKS Nineteen Ohio State softball student-athletes earned OSU Scholar-Athlete honors this spring for having a 3.0 or better grade point averages for the -19 academic year. WOMAN IN CHARGE Head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly picked up her 200th win at the helm for Ohio State when the Buckeyes delivered a 7-0 shutout versus George Mason to open the season. Schoenly hit another milestone on March 12 when OSU swept its doubleheader at Portland State for win No. 400 of her 13-year career as a head coach. ROAD TRIPPIN Ohio State spent the first six weeks of the season on the road. The Buckeyes played 24 games away from Columbus, posting a 13-5 neutral site record and 2-4 away mark. During the stretch, the Buckeyes faced six opponents that played in last year s NCAA Tournament, including defending national champion Florida State and runner-up Washington. HAYWARD & RAY THROW NO-NO Skylar Hayward and Morgan Ray came together to fan 10 batters on their way to throwing a no-hitter in Ohio State s 4-0 win over Army Feb. 22. Hayward lasted a career-high five innings while Ray tossed the final two frames. Both right-handed pitchers struck out five Black Knights, a career best for Hayward. It was the first nono thrown by an OSU pitcher since Apr. 6, COFFMAN MAKING B1G WAVES Rookie outfielder Kaitlyn Coffman earned her first weekly honor on Feb. 25 when she was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Coffman s big weekend at the plate propelled Ohio State to four straight wins, including three shutouts, as she batted.538 with 10 RBI, seven hits, two home runs, two runs scored and a slugging percentage at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Among the tournament leaders, 2 Coffman ranked in the top five in batting average, slugging percentage and total bases while leading the field in RBI. BUCKEYES AT MNCC Ohio State first attended the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in 2013 and has returned to the event in two-year increments. This year was the best showing yet as the Buckeyes went undefeated at the tournament for the first time in program history. Out of 28 teams, only three were perfect on the weekend - Ohio State, UCLA and Washington. Through four games, Ohio State allowed just one run in 28 innings. TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK Ohio State had four players hit above.400 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic - Kaitlyn Coffman, Lilli Piper and Summer Constable. The trio combined for 17 of the Buckeyes 31 hits. The pitching staff combined for a 0.25 ERA, 28 strikeouts and 1.00 WHIP while giving up only one run. PRESEASON ACCOLADES For the second time in as many years, senior shortstop Lilli Piper has earned a spot on the Top 50 Watch List for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. She also picked up Fastpitchnews.com Preseason All-America honors. WELCOME TO THE B1G LEAGUES Ohio State has six newcomers on the spring roster, including summer transfer Lauren Rice and walk-on Summer Constable. The Buckeyes also have four freshmen Meg Otte, Ashley Prange, Kaitlyn Coffman and Jessica Ross. TOUGH MATCHUPS Ohio State has faced some tough competition in order to get ready for Big Ten action. The squad challenged defending national champion No. 1 Florida State and No. 8/7 LSU at the ESPN Elite Invitational. The Buckeyes took on national runner-up No. 6 Washington at the Husky Classic and still have to face No. 23 Michigan. 6 OHIO STATE ADDS SIX FOR 2020 SEASON COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State softball program had six student-athletes sign National Letters of Intent to be part of the 2020 season. Tegan Cortelletti 2B/OF Hilliard, Ohio Hilliard Darby High School Earned first team All-District and All-OCC honors three times Received first and second team All-Ohio recognition during her sophomore and junior seasons, respectively Three-time Most Valuable Player Won the Slugger Award her freshman year Was a second team All-Metro selection as a junior Recorded the highest batting average on her team every year (.545,.645,.615) Plays club ball for the Lasers Green and was part of the 2016 ASA/USA Nationals championship team in Coach Schoenly on Cortelletti: Tegan is a great table-setter for any offense. She is a triple-threat at the plate and causes chaos on the bases. In addition, she knows how to win. She has a competitive spirit that will impact our team. Coach Schoenly on Hackenbracht: Sam is an elite power hitter. What will be exciting to see with Sam is where she will end up on the field on any given day. Although she s a natural catcher, she has the athleticism to help us all over the field. Sam is a ballpark kid. She loves the game and it shows in how she plays every single day. Lakewood High Three-time Offensive Player of the Year Ranked 53rd on FloSoftball s Hot 100 list for the Class of Team captain Earned All-Moore League honors every season Led the Lancers in RBI as a freshman and sophomore Plays club ball for the Corona Angels Helped the squad to a first-place finish in the Champions Cup Angels were a runner-up at the PGF National Championship in 2016 Finished third at the Colorado IDT Tournament and PGF National Championship last year. Coach Schoenly on Pack: Taylor comes to the Buckeyes with a lot of championship play experience. Extremely versatile, we expect her to catch and play infield. Taylor has a nice blend of hitting for power but with a high average. She has a strong arm and a high softball IQ. Mariah Rodriguez INF Orange, Calif. Orange Lutheran High School Ranked 47th on FloSoftball s Hot 100 list for the Class of Earned first team All-Trinity, All-Orange County and All-State recognition as a junior Named Offensive Player of the Year twice Tabbed as a first and second team All-Trinity honoree as a freshman and sophomore, respectively Was a second team All-Orange County and third team All-State selection during her sophomore campaign Member of the Mexican Junior National Team Currently plays club ball for the So Cal Athletics. By any measure, Kelly Kovach Schoenly is a winner. And through six seasons leading Ohio State, she has the Buckeyes positioned to write the next chapter in its storied history. In her first six seasons in Columbus, Schoenly s teams have won 199 games, including 13 over teams ranked in the Top 25. Sixteen of her players have earned All-Big Ten or NFCA All-Midwest Region honors. And just as important, the Buckeyes are excelling in the classroom. In 2014, five players garnered Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition, the most of any softball program in the conference. In, the Buckeyes tallied 36 wins, the most in a season since 2010 and during Schoenly s tenure. She had five Buckeyes earn All-Big Ten honors and four receive NFCA All-Region recognition. The Buckeyes had four players notch Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades for their academic excellence. For the third consecutive season, Ohio State secured an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and fought its way to the Gainesville Regional final. Against Top 75 teams, the Scarlet and Gray won 16 games while notching 22 victories against Top 100 foes. The 2017 season featured 35 wins, the most in a season since Schoenly coached the squad to a 15-8 mark in the Big Ten to finish third in the conference standings. Schoenly spent six seasons as head coach at Miami KOVACH SCHOENLY YEARLY RECORDS (Ohio) and was the program s all-time winningest coach with 188 career victories, leading the RedHawks to their first MAC Tournament title in 2009 before winning again in Schoenly also led the team to two NCAA Tournament berths in both 2009 and 2012, respectively. Prior to her stint at Miami, Schoenly was an assistant coach at Penn State ( ) for eight seasons and helped guide the Nittany Lions to seven Big Ten Tournament appearances and six NCAA Tournament berths. Before her time in State College, Schoenly was an assistant at her alma mater, Michigan, for three years ( ), helping the squad reach the NCAA Women s College World Series three consecutive times.
