3 The First Pitch Baumann New Strikeout King With the potential for at least three more starts this season, Michael Baumann holds the current record for career strikeouts at JU. The junior righty from Mahtomedi, Minn., has 232 in his career. The previous JU career record was 214, held by Matt Loosen, who pitched for the Dolphins from Baumann has 78 K s this season and is averaging 7.1 K s per game. He s on pace to finish with 99 strikeouts this season and 253 in his three-year career. The ASUN Conference record holder is Evan Thomas, who struck out 366 in two seasons at FIU. Different Dolphins Contributed in 13-Game Win Streak In JU s 13-game win streak every Dolphin had upped their game. As a team the Dolphins were averaging.348 with 170 hits, and only three Dolphins who had appeared at the plate were hitting under.300 over the last 13. Two-time ASUN Player of the Week Angel Camacho had been the most impressive, hitting.414 with 24 hits, including three homers, and 19 RBI. Dolphins Streak Among Best in Nation Before losing the final game at Kennesaw State 6-1, JU held the longest active winning streak in the nation for about five hours with 13 wins in a row. The last time JU won 13 in a row was 1991, when the team went on to appear in the NCAA Regionals. Wearing One for His Team Seth DeWitt, a four-year infielder and designated hitter, has made it on base quite a bit over the past few seasons. 26 of those reaches have been come from hit-by-pitches, including six this season. The senior from Jacksonville Beach, Fla., has worn more pitches than any other Dolphin in history. The previous record of 24 belonged to John Vollstedt, who played for JU from Bullpen Winning When It Counts In the Dolphins 27 wins this season, the bullpen has won or saved 26 of them. The pen has 15 wins and 11 saves this year. Pitching Key in Dolphin Wins In JU s 27 wins this season the pitching staff has a combined ERA of 2.71, with three of the seven starters recording ERAs under The Dolphins are averaging 8.2 K s and 3.74 walks in those wins. In Jacksonville s 20 losses this season the pitching staff has a combined ERA of 5.58, with four of the six starters recording ERAs over 5.00 and three over The Dolphins are averaging 8.4 K s to 5.45 walks in those losses. The Dolphins also have more wild pitches in 20 losses (18) than in 27 wins (16). Caliente Camacho Imitating the Dolphins as a whole, Angel Camacho has been on an incredible tear since the calendar flipped to April. The sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., has had at least one hit in the past 18 games, including 10 multi-hit games. He has a.419 BA, a SLG of.703, and an OBP of.439 over that stretch with 31 hits, including six doubles and five homers, and 22 RBI. He now leads the team in season-long batting average (.333) and is second on the team in RBI (33). He has also reached base 20 games in a row. Mike Do Everything Cassala Starting catcher/designated hitter/starting pitcher/relief pitcher Mike Cassala has contributed in almost every conceivable way this season. He s started 29 games behind home plate while also appearing 12 times on the mound, including one start, and six games as the DH. He s hitting.278 on the year, the third highest batting average among qualifying Dolphins, and has the fourth-most runs driven in (17). Despite appearing in four different roles this year and hitting in five different spots in the lineup, Cassala is the seventh-hardest batter to strikeout in the ASUN, being sat down just once every 9.5 at-bats. He s currently riding a 13-game on-base streak and has at least one hit in the last five games. Freshman Success While upperclassmen have been a huge part of JU s winning ways this season, the freshmen haven t been scrubs by any stretch. Freshman pitcher Tyler Santana is 7th in the ASUN in games finished (10) and tied-12th in the ASUN in total appearances (19), and rookie Scott Dubrule is 10th in at-bats (177), 7th in assists (104), and 6th in double plays (21).
