The Terrapins will also face The Citadel on Saturday (February 16) to round out play in Charleston. The Terps and Bulldogs will square off at 5 p.m. on Saturday. THE TERPS IN CHARLESTON For the third straight season, Maryland heads south to Charleston, S.C. to play in a tournament at The Citadel. In both 2000 and this season, the Terrapins have opened their campaign in Charleston at Riley Park. In the two previous tournaments, the Terrapins have compiled a 2-4 overall record vs. the field in Charleston. Last season, the Terps played solid baseball in Charleston. Maryland went 2-1 with victories over George Mason (5-1) and West Virginia (5-2), while falling to the host Bulldogs of The Citadel (5-4). Maryland will make one other trip to Charleston this season, February 22-24, to play in the Charleston Challenge. The Terrapins will face the host College of Charleston, Marshall and Le Moyne over the three-day event. OLD RIVALS MEET IN THE DEEP SOUTH The Last Two Visits to Charleston /16 vs. The Citadel... Maryland and James Madison have met on the baseball field 35 times including every year since 1989, but this season s two meetings will not be held in Harrisonburg, Va. or College Park, Md., it will be in Charleston, S.C. The Terps will look to improve on their overall record vs. the Dukes. Last season, James Madison won 10-3 in Harrisonburg and 8-7 in College Park. The last time Maryland won vs. the Dukes was during the 2000 campaign with a 13-8 win over the Dukes on the road. One hitter to keep an eye on for the Terps vs. James Madison is sophomore Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.). Buffone owns a career.400 average including one RBI. Junior pitcher Mike Dallmeyer (Enola, Pa.) was the Terps best pitcher vs. JMU in In two appearances, Dallmeyer had a record of 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA in 5.0 innings pitched. The Pennsylvania native allowed just two earned runs on six hits while striking out four.

2 NOTES/COACH RUPP Charleston Crab House Shootout Terry Rupp begins his second season as the leader of the Maryland baseball program. After adjusting to life in the ACC in 2001, Rupp and his coaching staff are poised to mold this season s young and talented team into a winning club. In just six seasons as a coach, Rupp has won 232 games and owns an impressive.665 winning percentage. Rupp has the Terrapins pointed in the right direction to be a contender in the always competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. Rupp and his staff landed a talented crop of newcomers that already join a solid nucleus of returning players. Rupp, 35, led Tampa to a (.729) record in five years as head coach, including four 40-win seasons. Rupp guided Tampa to the 1998 national championship with an impressive record. The national title was the third in Spartan history. In 2000, his team was ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division II poll heading into postseason play. His Tampa teams posted a 15-5 cumulative record against Division I opposition, including wins over Miami, Oral Roberts, Southwestern Louisiana and Army. Under his tutelage, eight of his Tampa players have been selected in the past five amateur baseball drafts. Three players were taken in the first nine rounds of the 2000 draft, giving Tampa more early draftees than any other college baseball team in the state of Florida. Rupp is a graduate of the University of Tampa where he earned a bachelor of science degree in marketing. At Tampa, he was a two-time All-South Regional baseball selection who played on teams that made a pair of national championship appearances. He was a teammate of St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Tino Martinez. He also was a two-time all-conference selection in basketball and a two-time conference allacademic selection. TERPS STILL SEARCHING FOR WIN NO. 1 VS. THE CITADEL The Terps and Bulldogs will meet on the diamond for the fifth time Saturday. All-time, Maryland is 0-4 vs. the Bulldogs including last season s 5-4 loss. One bright spot in the 5-4 loss last season was the performance of right-hander Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.). The 6-6 New Yorker pitched a then-career high 7.0 innings and allowed just two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Senior Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) scored two runs and walked three times last season vs. The Citadel. Junior Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) also had one RBI by going 1-for-4 vs. the Bulldogs. ON THE MOUND THIS WEEKEND FOR THE TERPS Although this weekend s rotation is still not set, the three likely candidates to toe the rubber for the Terrapins include a trio of juniors. Jared Stuart, Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) and Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.) are the frontrunners to nail down the three weekend spots in the rotation this season. Stuart led Maryland with 77.0 innings pitched in 2001 and was one of the team s most consistent performers. A victim of some tough luck in a few starts last year, Stuart pitched better than his 3-7 record indicated. Stuart racked up 48 strikeouts in 15 appearances, which included 12 starts. Schmoll ranked first on the team with 57 strikeouts and was second on the club with 76.1 innings pitched. Even though his record was just 2-8, Schmoll threw the team s only complete game of the year in a 9-4 upset victory over Wake Forest at Shipley Field. Schmoll allowed just one earned run in nine innings of work in the victory over the Demon Deacons and showed the potential for a strong season in. Ainsworth returned from Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in 2000 to become one of the Terps weekend starters late in the 2001 season. The 6-3 righty possesses all the tools to be one of the top pitchers in the conference and now finally healthy, Ainsworth should be one to watch in. The Pennsylvania native finished the 2001 campaign 3-3 and was the team s starter in the ACC Tournament vs. NC State. TERRAPIN LINEUP WELCOMES BACK SEVERAL FAMILIAR FACES Several familiar faces are back in the Terrapin lineup for the campaign led by seniors Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) and Matt Swope. Swope is the team s leading returning hitter with a.328 batting average while McDonald led Maryland with eight home runs in Swope was the team s leadoff hitter last season and led Maryland with leadoff home runs. A versatile player who played all three outfield positions last season, Swope will be the team s starter in left when the season begins and could also see time at third base. Media Information As a prep, he was a Parade and McDonald s All- American in basketball after helping lead Jesuit High of Tampa to the class 3A state championship. In 1989, he was voted into the Jesuit High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Rupp was a 16th-round draft choice of the San Diego Padres in 1989 and played two seasons in the Padres minor league organization. From he was a minor league coach for Oneonta of the New York Yankees organization in the New York-Penn League. Rupp married his wife Jill in 1999 and they reside in College Park. 3 McDonald is a two-year starter at catcher and will also see time at first base and as the team s designated hitter in. After not hitting a home run in his first two seasons in College Park, McDonald cranked eight last year and also drove in 33 runs. Junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) is another key cog that returns for Rupp and the Terrapins. After hitting.300 in his first season as a regular, McCurdy is a five-tool talent who is filled with talent and potential in. McCurdy led Maryland with 12 stolen bases last season in 16 attempts. Redshirt junior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) returns to take the starting spot at first base for the Terps. The local product batted.282 last season and gave the Terps a potent bat from the first base and the designated hitter spot in the batting order. Two Garden State natives, sophomores Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) and Jeremy Suarez (Lakewood, N.J.), are another two players that will see time in the infield and give the Terps excellent depth. FROM THE GRIDIRON TO THE DIAMOND Redshirt junior Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) has had a busy year to say the least. Since August, Whitmer was a member of the Terrapin football team that went 10-2 and won the ACC Championship and earned an Orange Bowl berth. With about a three-week rest, Whitmer returns to competition with the Terrapin baseball team. An excellent defensive outfielder with great speed, Whitmer gives the Terps great depth in the outfield. Last season, Whitmer was second on the team with nine stolen bases in limited duty. Whitmer missed most of the 2001 season due to spring football. ANOTHER TOUGH SCHEDULE AWAITS FOR THE TERPS IN Once again the Terrapins will face several of the nation s elite teams on the diamond this upcoming season. With three members of the ACC in various preseason top 10 polls, the Terps face seven schools that were in last season s NCAA Tournament. In Baseball America s preseason top 25, five ACC opponents are ranked including No. 2 Clemson and No. 6 Florida State. The other ranked ACC schools include No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 19 North Carolina and No. 21 Wake Forest. Other than North Carolina, each of the preseason ranked ACC teams made the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Last season, Maryland went a combined 3-3 vs. Wake Forest and North Carolina including winning the home series over the Tar Heels for the first time since On the non-conference slate, the Terps open the year in South Carolina vs. James Madison and The Citadel at the Charleston Crab House Shootout. In the second weekend of the season, Maryland returns to Charleston, S.C. to face Marshall, Le Moyne and the College of Charleston at the Charleston Challenge. Other non-conference foes that made the tournament last season include William & Mary, Temple and UMBC. Several new teams appear on the schedule for the upcoming season. Pace, Vermont, Penn State, St. Joseph s, Temple, Navy and William & Mary are all new additions to the slate. All of those opponents will face the Terps in College Park while the Terps will also visit Navy and William & Mary in addition to their trips to Shipley Field Final ACC Standings ACC Games All Games vs. vs. vs. Team W-L Pct.
