TOWSON SHIPLEY FIELD (2,000) TERP BASEBALL CLOSES CONFERENCE SEASON WITH WEEKEND SET AGAINST NO. 15 FLORIDA STATE A win over Towson this week matched last season s win total (22) and a conference win over No. 4 Miami on Sunday matched the program s most ACC wins since 1980 (seven). The team will look to improve upon last season s win total and double last season s conference win total (four) when it hosts No. 15 Florida State this weekend. The three-game set comes in the middle of a current seven-game Maryland home stand and will wrap up the 2005 conference season Audio broadcasts for all three games will again be available on and live stats will be available by logging on to the baseball site. Sunday s series finale will be Maryland Senior Day, and 11 Terrapin seniors will be honored with framed jerseys in 30-minute ceremony before the 1 p.m. first pitch. Activities will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. PREVIEWING FLORIDA STATE 2005 Record: (12-9 Atlantic Coast Conference) Record: (16-8 ACC). All-Time Series: Maryland trails, Last Meeting: Florida State 13, Maryland 6 March 21, Florida State will come to College Park with an overall record of and a 12-9 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Seminoles hold a 42-3 advantage in the schools all-time series and have won 21 straight games over the Terrapins. This will be the fifth time in the last six years that Maryland will play Florida State in its last conference series of the season, as the Terps look to close out the season on a strong note. Sophomore outfielder Shane Robinson has been one of the nation s top hitters all season long and comes into the weekend leading the ACC and ranking ninth nationally in batting (.438 average). Robinson may be the quickest player in the ACC, and he leads the league with 38 stolen bases. Daniel Wardell (seven home runs in just 86 at-bats) and Gibbs Chapman (six homers) are the Seminoles primary power threats, but the team produces runs without putting much stock in the long ball. Seven Seminole hitters have at least nine doubles, and FSU leads the conference in sacrifices (sac flies and sac hits) with 74 this season. The Florida State pitching staff ranks third in the ACC in earned run average and is led by one of the nation s premier relievers in Tyler Chambliss. Chambliss is tied for third in the nation with 12 saves, has allowed opponents to hit just.189 and averages 13.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Friday s starter Bryan Henry also has a sub-2.00 ERA, as he s compiled a 5-2 record, 1.68 ERA and a stellar 1.30 walks per nine innings. Kevin Lynch leads the ACC in appearances with 32, and Saturday starter Barrett Browning has a 3.11 ERA despite 42 walks in 72.1 innings. All home games played at Shipley Field in BOLD CAPS. CURRENT STATS AND TRENDS Pitching Josh Andrews started Maryland s staff day at Miami on Friday (4/29) and held the Hurricanes scoreless in the first inning for just the 12th time all season including that game and a threeinning start against Towson this week, Andrews has a 2.00 ERA in three starts in 2005 Chris Bowen has a 1.62 ERA and.133 batting average against in four home appearances... Brett Cecil has given up two runs in his last 11.1 innings and has a 2.08 ERA in the 12 appearances in which he walks less than two batters... Chris Clem has gone at least 6.0 innings in nine of his last 10 starts and has walked two batters or less in nine of his 11 starts on the season... With a team-high 24 appearances this season, Justin Hulse not only ranks seventh in the ACC, but is now tied for eighth on Maryland s single season appearances list... last season, Hulse climbed to the top of that list with a school-record 28 appearances... senior Sean Kane retired 10 straight batters between a two-inning appearance at Miami and a season-high five-inning appearance against Towson he was the only Terp pitcher to hold Miami scoreless in consecutive innings in the game, and he allowed just three hits in the team s loss to Towson... Michael Meagher has allowed zero earned runs in 11 of his 12 appearances this season... Ryan Moorer is 1-0 with a.129 opponent batting average in his last three appearances (9.0 innings) if you included his exhibition stats against the Bowie Baysox, Moorer would be 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP in his last four appearances... Seth Overbey has given up one extra-base hit in his last 7.2 innings, after allowing 10 in his first 11.1 innings this season... Ben Pfinsgraff leads the team with six quality starts this season... seven of his 10 starts have been decided by two runs or less, and he has walked more than one batter in just two of his starts... Mike Sufczynski dropped the first decision of his career on Wednesday against Towson, falling to 4-1 with a 2.98 ERA in Sufczynski has given up two earned runs or less in seven of his eight starts... Brett Tidball leads the team with a.176 opponent batting average and an average of 1.50 walks per nine innings. Offense Redshirt freshman Taylor Baum got his first career hit on Saturday at Miami (4/30) and followed it up with his first career home run against Towson on Wednesday (5/4)... Chad Durakis leads the team with an 81.8% success rate scoring runners from third base with less than two outs (9 RBI in 11 opportunities)... Will Frazier has 16 RBI and has been hit by six pitches in the last 14 games... With a home run against Towson on Wednesday, his second in three games, Frazier moved into a tie for second place on the school s all-time list with 32 in his career Brian Jarosinski has walked five times and scored five runs in the last four games Matt Maropis has successfully stolen 11 straight bases and now leads the team with 14 on the season... Maropis is hitting.378 (17-for-45) with 16 runs, five doubles and five walks in his last 11 games Truan Mehl is hitting.469 (30-for-64) in his last 13 games... with four hits in the doubleheader against Towson, Mehl moved into a tie for 10th on Maryland s single season hits list with Dan Melvin is expected to miss about two weeks with a foot injury... freshman Joe Palumbo set a new career-high with four hits in the Sunday series finale at Miami (5/1), doubling his previous career-best of two hits Palumbo is tied for third on the team with 16 walks and a.379 on-base percentage this season... In his last six games, Bobby Ryan has scored three runs, driven in three runs, sacrificed three times and walked four times... Elliot Singletary leads the ACC and is tied for third in the nation in doubles per game (0.50/g)... Singletary nearly has more doubles (22) than singles (23) this season... Jason Von Behren has seven walks in his last 37 plate appearances after walking seven times in his first 124 plate appearances of the season Maryland is 12-4 when Jordan Wilson drives in a run and just 7-20 when he does not collect an RBI. FLOOD GATES OPEN AGAINST TOWSON After a tough 7-5 loss to Towson in the first game of a Wednesday doubleheader (5/4), the Maryland bats came alive in the team s most explosive game of the season. 10 different Terps had at least one hit, and 10 scored at least one run. Leadoff hitter Elliot Singletary was a catalyst to the Maryland outburst with two home runs, five RBI and three runs, and Matt Maropis set new career-highs with five hits and five runs scored.

3 In all, the Terrapins set new season-highs with 20 runs, 24 hits, eight doubles, four home runs and 12 extra-base hits. The Terps came within one hit of the school record of 25 in a game, done just once on April 6, 1992 in a 23-7 win over Howard. MEHL-EVISION Senior outfielder, the team leader in most offensive categories, has been outstanding all season long for the Terrapins, and he has been especially good in Maryland s two television games. Led by a dominant 4-for-5 performance in the team s first TV game against Wake Forest (4/23), Mehl is a combined 5-for-9 with three runs, two RBI, two doubles and a stolen base when he s been on television this season. STAFF APPRECIATION DAY Looking to make up for being without starter Ben Pfinsgraff and combat prolific Miami starter Cesar Carrillo, Maryland went with a staff day to kick off its series with the Hurricanes. The Terps alternated lefties and righties, using a total of eight pitchers to keep the powerful Miami offense off balance. Miami improved to 32-0 all-time when Carrillo starts, but it wasn t easy. The Terrapins got on the board in the first inning and kept the game close for nine innings, but ultimately, Carrillo and the Hurricanes pulled through to win 4-3. Maryland became the only team to come within a run of beating Miami when Carrillo starts and was a serious threat to Carrillo s perfect 22-0 career record. Senior left-hander Josh Andrews made his second start of the season in the game and worked out of a bases-loaded jam with an inning-ending double play. Andrews managed to hold Miami scoreless in the first inning for just the 12th time in 43 games this season. Miami got 11 hits in the game, but the staff approach did the job, preventing any big innings from the Hurricanes. Backed by Maryland s best defensive game of the season, Miami didn t score more than one run in any inning for just the fourth time all season and the second time in Atlantic Coast Conference play. SHOWING MOORER POISE Freshman right-hander Ryan Moorer continues to grow with every inning he pitches, and is getting the job done for the Terps of late. Over the weekend, he made appearances in back-to-back games against Miami. In Friday s series opener, he was the last of eight Terrapin pitchers to throw and was the only one to work a perfect inning against the Hurricanes. His velocity seemed to be as high as it has ever been, and his command was flawless, needing just 10 pitches (eight strikes) to work a eighth inning. Career Doubles 1. 5 He came back the next day and gave up two runs in three relief innings. He gave up just two hits, but a two-run homer by Danny Valencia spoiled an otherwise solid outing. In his last three official appearances, Moorer has given up just four hits in 9.0 innings, picking up his first career win in a start against Coppin State (4/19). Prior to that, he gave up four hits and no earned runs in an exhibition game against the Bowie Baysox. If that game were included in the team s season stats, Moorer would be 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in his last four appearances. JOE PA-LUMBER Freshman Joe Palumbo went on the aggressive at the plate in the series finale at Miami, pulling out the heavy lumber and putting together a 4-for-5 day. He scored two runs and drove in two more on his way to doubling his previous career-high of two hits and tying a career-best with two RBI in a game. The four hits had a big impact on the freshman s batting average, too, raising it 42 points from.188 to.230. TERPS A THREAT TO UPSET The 2005 Terrapins continue to show improvement and have proven to be a legitimate threat to some of the conference s top teams. The team s two wins over top-five teams Georgia Tech (4/ 2) and Miami (5/1) have been well-documented, but Maryland has played teams tough all season long. Of the team s 20 conference losses this season, seven have come in one-run games, two in two-run games and two in three-run games. Maryland is mathematically locked in for the ACC Tournament play-in round robin, meaning it will have to win two games for the right to play the conference s regular season champion. With six conference losses apiece, that opponent would most likely be Georgia Tech (18-6), Miami (17-6-1) or North Carolina (15-6-1). Maryland beat both Georgia Tech and Miami and lost two close games to North Carolina (3-5, 2-3). MARYLAND SAYS FAREWELL TO KYLE GEORGE First-year volunteer assistant Kyle George has been a valuable part of the Maryland coaching staff since taking the program s volunteer assistant position in the summer. A former standout shortstop and a 43rd round draft choice in 2003, George worked with infielders and was instrumental in drills and the team s pre-game warm-up routine. George s last days with the team were at Miami, and the team capped his tenure off with its second win over a top-five team of the season. Southern California Missouri MEHL PACING THE TERP OFFENSE Center fielder Truan Mehl continues to be Maryland s most consistent threat on offense, as he s had hits in nine straight games and 12 of his last 13. Over his current nine-game hit streak, he has seven of his team-leading 21 multi-hit games and is hitting.488 (21-for-43) with 11 runs scored, seven RBI, four stolen bases and just two strikeouts. With his latest hot streak, Mehl now leads the Atlantic Coast Conference with 45 hits in conference play and is second with 78 hits on the season. He leads the team in that department as well as in runs (38), total bases (109), slugging (.519), on-base percentage (.419) and OPS (.937). WILSON PRODUCING WINS First baseman Jordan Wilson enters the final week of the season third on the team with 27 runs batted in, including seven multi-rbi games. Wilson s production has been a big factor in the Terps successes this season, as Maryland has a 12-4 record when he drives in a run and a 7-20 record when he does not. ELLIOT DOUBLETARY AND THE TWO-BASE TERRAPINS With eight doubles in his last 10 games, senior infielder Elliot Singletary now leads the ACC and is third in the nation in doubles per game (0.50/g). Over half of Singletary s 50 hits this season (27) have been for extra bases, with a team-high 22 of those being doubles. Singletary leads a group of six Terrapin hitters with at least 10 doubles, as Maryland has climbed to No. 8 in the country in two-base hits. Truan Mehl is second on the team and ninth in the ACC in doubles (17, 0.36/g). Dan Melvin is third on the team with 15, and Will Frazier, second on the school s career doubles list with 56, has 13 on the season. CECIL BACK TO EARLY SEASON FORM Freshman left-hander Brett Cecil is rediscovering the early season form that saw him start the year with eight scoreless innings in his first three appearances. In his last 11.1 innings, Cecil has allowed just eight base runners and two earned runs. In those three games, Cecil has thrown 119 of 184 pitches for strikes (65%) and walked just one batter. The freshman has found great success when he has command of the strike zone, as evidenced by a 1.93 ERA when he walks one batter or less (12 games - 6 ER in 28.0 innings). Head Coach Terry Rupp has shown confidence in the freshman, giving Cecil the ball in 14 games this season - tied for the second-most appearances on the team. Ten of those 14 games have been decided by two runs or less, including seven in conference play. THE VON BEHREN OF FREE PASSES Junior infielder Jason Von Behren is becoming a more patient and disciplined hitter in the last two weeks. Von Behren has walked eight times and struck out eight times in his last 37 trips to the plate. Prior to that, Von Behren had walked seven times to 30 strikeouts in 124 plate appearances. Von Behren has five walks in his last six games, and his increase in on-base percentage (.550 in the last six games) has led to more runs being scored. Von Behren has scored six runs in his last eight games after scoring one in the previous nine. DURAKIS KEEPS HITTING Freshman catcher Chad Durakis has emerged as one of the Terps most consistent bats this season, and he is doing the job from behind the plate and at designated hitter. Durakis is hitting.286 for the season and has driven in 24 runs, including 10 RBI in his last 12 games. In his first 31 games, Durakis had five extra-base hits and no home runs, but he seems to be finding more of a power stroke in the final weeks of the season. Half of his 10 extra-base hits this season have come in the last 10 games, including his first career home runs in conference games against Wake Forest (4/22) and Miami (5/1). Durakis strengths as a hitter this season have been putting the ball in play and finding holes. He leads the team this season with an 81.8% success rate scoring runners from third base with less than two outs (9 RBI in 11 opportunities) and is second with a.345 average with runners on base. MEAGHER UNPHASED IN PRESSURE SITUATIONS Junior left-hander Michael Meagher has come on to be one of the Terps most reliable pitchers after missing the first five weeks of the season with a shoulder injury. Meagher has given up

7 three earned runs in 12 appearances (14.2 innings), has allowed 10 hits and has a batting average against of just.185. played some of its tightest defense of the season behind Moorer, including Matt Maropis who started at third base for the first time. With a calm confidence with runners on base, Meagher has emerged as the team s best option to close out games. He features a fastball that can touch 90 and a plus-slider that he can and will throw for a strike in any count. FRESHMAN ARMS PITCH BEYOND THEIR YEARS The Terrapin pitching staff has been a pleasant surprise all season long, led by a group of newcomers that should leave the program in safe hands for years to come. Left-hander Brett Cecil has been the most active of that group, making 14 appearances and three starts, and redshirt freshman Mike Sufczynski has emerged as the team s top starter in midweek games. Cecil has pitched in every role this season. He started the season with 6.0 shutout innings and two saves in his first two appearances, and has since made three starts, two long relief appearances (3.0 + innings) and five short relief appearances. He has given up two run in his last 11.1 innings and has a 1.93 ERA when he walks less than two batters in an appearance. Sufczynski is 4-1 this season and has been a steady performer in mid-week games all season. He s made eight starts and has given up two earned runs or less in seven of them, including a career-high seven shutout innings last Tuesday at James Madison (4/26). Brett Tidball is a finesse pitcher who takes a very cerebral approach to pitching. He works the edges of the strike zone and uses both corners to effectively keep hitters off balance. He has a team-best.175 batting average against this season, highlighted by four hitless innings against the conference s top offense, Georgia Tech. Right-handers Brett Jones, Ryan Moorer and Brad Taylor have each shown promise, with Moorer coming on strong to close out the seaon. Taylor has struck out 17 batters in 15.0 innings and has walked just four. He is a strike thrower that has a high ceiling as he gets stronger and adds more velocity. Jones is a competitor who knows how to pitch. Like many pitchers in the conference, an appearance at Georgia Tech has inflated his ERA (7.71), but he has held hitters in check with just a.200 average in 7.0 innings. Moorer has the biggest upside of any of the freshman group, coming off a season over which he was a 13th round draft choice of the Chicago Cubs. Moorer can hit the low 90 s on a radar gun and is developing secondary pitches to make his fastball even more effective. In his last four appearances (including an exhibition game against the Bowie Baysox), Moorer is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. THE ACE OF EXTRA BASE With a recent hot streak over which senior Will Frazier has hits in 25 of 30 games, he has put his name on eight of the school s career record lists. Most recently, he broke the program s extra-base hit record and now sits at 88 and counting for his career. Tied with Paul Schager with 81 extra-base hits in his career, Frazier connected on a 91 mph offering from North Carolina All-American Daniel Bard and sent it over the left-center field wall. With the blast, Frazier moved to the top of the school s extra-base hits list, extended a hitting streak to a team season-high 14 games and became the fifth Terrapin in school history to hit 30 career home runs. A MEMORABLE WEEK FOR MARYLAND BASEBALL The week of April 1st through April 8th featured some memorable moments for the Maryland baseball program. The Terps took down the top-ranked team in the nation on Saturday, April 2, and Ben Pfinsgraff, the winning pitcher in that game, was named ACC Pitcher of the Week for his effort. In an exhibition game against the Bowie Baysox on Tuesday, April 5, freshman Ryan Moorer pitched the Terps to a 2-1 win over the Orioles double-a affiliate. The Terrapin defense 2005 MARYLAND Baseball Former Terrapin pitcher Steve Schmoll also made a splash, making an improbable run at a spot on the Los Angeles Dodgers 25-man roster. Schmoll didn t even start the srping in big league camp, but impressed Dodgers management with 4.0 shutout innings at the end of the spring. On April 6th, Schmoll made his major league debut in a 10-4 Dodgers win. Schmoll retired all three of the batters he faced in the game and was dubbed by ESPN s Chris Berman as Steve It s a Schmoll World After All. Later in the week (April 8th), despite giving up three runs in 1.0 inning, Schmoll picked up his first career win after the Dodgers rallied to beat the Diamondbacks. The next day, he got the final two outs of a Dodgers win over Arizona to secure his first career save. On the same day as Schmoll s debut, Eric Milton made his first start of the season and 200th of his career. He was the winning pitcher in a 9-5 Cincinnati Reds win over the New York Mets. He went 5.1 innings and gave up three earned runs for his first win in a Reds uniform. PFINSGRAFF NAMED ACC PITCHER OF THE WEEK Junior right-hander Ben Pfinsgraff was named the Atlantic Coast Conference s Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 4th after leading the Terps to a win over then-no. 1 Georgia Tech on Saturday, April 2nd. Pfinsgraff threw a season-high 131 pitches and held the conference s top offense to just five hits and one run in 7.2 gutsy innings. Making Pfinsgraff s start more amazing is that he walked more batters in the game (six) than he had in his previous seven starts combined (five) and the Yellow Jackets scored a combined 18.5 runs in the other two games of the series. He prevented Tech, an offense that picks up steam and puts up big numbers quickly, from coming through with a big hit in one of the biggest wins in program history. FINDING MAROPIS TIME Head coach Terry Rupp is finding ways to get junior Matt Maropis atbats. He started the year at second base, but had some early defensive issues and starting finding time as a designated hitter. Maropis got some work at both first and third base earlier in the month, before replacing an injured Nick Jowers in right field. Maropis has started 11 games in right field. One of the team s better athletes, he has adjusted well to yet another new position and continues to hit. Defensively, he looks comfortable at both third and right field, with that versatility providing more lineup options and a means to get Maropis bat going. In 2004, Maropis broke out with a.353 batting average, 13 stolen bases and a.498 slugging percentage, but got out of the gates slowly in But with a.333 average (12-for-36), 11 runs, four walks and four stolen bases in his last 11 games, he seems to be finding his stroke quickly. The addition of his hot bat to the Maryland lineup could give the Terps an added push heading down the stretch. JOWERS PRODUCING IN DIFFERENT WAYS With a knee injury to Brian Jarosinski freeing up time in the outfield, freshman Nick Jowers seized the opportunity and made 14 straight starts in both center and right field. The first 10 of those were in center field, where he is a quick and natural defender, and the last four have been in right field. The move has allowed Truan Mehl, the team s rangiest defender, to make the switch to center field. Jowers took a spike to his left shin in a loss to UMBC (4/6) and missed nine games with the injury. He has since returned and been the first

8 player off the Maryland bench, pinch-running and entering games late for defensive purposes. Jowers made an immediate impact in the Terps lineup, putting together a six-game hit streak and walking five times in his first seven games. His streak was snapped with a hitless doubleheader against Clemson (3/26), but he came back with six hits, four RBI and three runs in his last six starts. RECAPPING THE WEEK OF 3/28 Coming off a sweep by Clemson and eight straight losses in ACC play, the Terps needed to get back on track before heading to No. 1 Georgia Tech. They did just that in taking a pair of mid-week games against UMBC. On Tuesday, Maryland spotted UMBC a 6-1 lead through five innings, before the Terp bats blew up for seven unanswered runs in the final four innings. Jason Von Behren capped a five-run comeback with a bases loaded double in the seventh inning, and Elliot Singletary chipped in with three hits and two RBI. Eight different Terps scored one run apiece, and Justin Hulse wiped out any chance of a UMBC comeback with 1.2 scoreless innings. Will Frazier was 1-for-5 with a run scored in the game, becoming just the eighth Terrapin player ever to reach the 200 hit plateau. Frazier, among the school career leaders in multiple offensive categories, has had one of the most consistent and prolific four-year careers in school history. The momentum of the comeback carried over into Wednesday, as the Terp offense put up runs in seven of its eight at-bats on the way to an 11-5 win over Temple. Will Frazier doubled twice and drove in two runs, and Elliot Singletary and Jordan Wilson each scored three runs apiece. Mike Sufczynski won his third straight start, and Michael Meagher got the Terps out of an eighth inning jam to pick up his first career save. OFFENSE FINDS ITS STRIDE In non-conference wins over UMBC and Temple at the end of March, the Maryland bats combined to pound out 28 hits and score 19 runs. They had double digit hits for the third time in four games and fifth time in seven. The consistent bats of Elliot Singletary, Will Frazier, Truan Mehl and Chad Durakis have been huge factors in the current hot streak, but a change in offensive approach has led to more offensive consistency and fluidity. The team is bunting, sacrificing and hitting and running more, putting pressure on opposing defenses and giving players more opportunities to drive in runs. Elliot Singletary and Dan Melvin, commonly first and second in the Terp lineup, have led that charge with a combined 11 sacrifice bunts. RECAPPING THE CLEMSON SERIES The Terps had a tough series at Clemson, as the Tigers swept the three-game set. The Terps fell in extra innings in the second game of the series, and Clemson rolled to double-digit wins in the first and third games. With inclement weather on the horizon, Maryland and Clemson hooked up for a twi-night doubleheader on Saturday. Clemson got the better end of both games, recording 6-4 and 12-0 wins to complete a threegame series sweep. The day started with a 13-inning thriller and ended with a 17-hit Clemson outburst, as Maryland fell to on the season and 3-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Will Frazier led the Maryland offense with five hits in the two games, including his fifth home run of the season in the first game. Frazier extended a hit streak to six games and raised his batting average to.270 for the season its highest point since the final game of the Virginia Tech series (.282 3/6). Truan Mehl and Chad Durakis each had hits in both games to extend current hitting streaks. Mehl extended his to a team-best 11 games, and Durakis has now hit safely in nine straight. Ben Pfinsgraff got a no-decision in the first game of the day, going 6.1 innings and giving up two earned runs. He struck out four, walked one and gave up just five hits in the extra inning affair. Chris Bowen threw the final 5.0 innings of the game and got the loss, despite not giving up any earned runs (two unearned runs). For the year, Bowen and Pfinsgraff are among Terp pitching leaders with respective 0.93 and 2.95 ERAs. RECAPPING THE DUQUESNE DOUBLEHEADER Maryland baseball fell behind big early in the first of two games against Duquesne, but outscored the Dukes 15-3 over the final 13 innings of the doubleheader to earn a split (9/10 14/2). Twelve different Terps had hits and 10 scored runs to help jump start a Maryland offense that had scored 20 runs in its previous six games. Dan Melvin led that group with six hits and five runs, and Truan Mehl extended his teambest hitting streak to eight games. Hitting out of the second spot in the lineup, Melvin went a combined 6-for-11 with five runs and three RBI for the day. Truan Mehl extended a hit streak to eight games, and Elliot Singletary continued a streak of 10 straight hits for extra bases. Freshmen Chad Durakis and Nick Jowers each extended current hit streaks, with Durakis current six-game streak tying for the team s second longest of the season. Jowers extended his streak to four games and walked twice on the day. In his last five games, Jowers is hitting.400, with five walks, two stolen bases and a.550 on-base percentage. Jordan Wilson had an RBI streak snapped at five games in the first game, but brought his season RBI total to a team-best 17 with a 2-for-5, two RBI second game. On the mound, Mike Sufczynski won his second straight start with 6.2 innings, 7 hits, 2 runs and 5 strikeouts in the second game. Freshmen Brett Jones and Brett Tidball and junior transfer Michael Meagher each got their first career work to close out the game, and each held Duquesne scoreless. THE TERRAPIN YOUTH MOVEMENT With several players nursing injuries and working through early slumps, Head Coach Terry Rupp looked to some Terp freshmen to step in and contribute right away. Joe Palumbo and Nick Jowers have been forces at the bottom of the Maryland order, getting on base and turning the lineup over for Elliot Singletary and company. Palumbo has played second base, third base, shortstop and right field this season. He s hitting.229, but has a.379 on-base percentage and is showing maturity beyond his years in the infield. Jowers has started in 15 games in both right and center field. Defensively, he is showing good instincts, range and grace in both center and right field, having made a running catch on the warning track at Virginia and gunning a Duquesne runner out at the plate in recent weeks. Catcher Chad Durakis stepped in and started 11 of the team s first 12 games this season. Since senior Bobby Ryan returned to the lineup, Durakis has made starts behind the plate and at DH and has responded with the team s second-longest hitting streak of the season (14 games) and a.286 season average. Defensively, the early learning experience and a good catcher s body should allow Durakis to blossom over his Maryland career. Brett Cecil, Ryan Moorer, Mike Sufczynski and Brad Taylor have all made big contributions on the mound this year. Cecil was the first reliever out of the bullpen in the team s first win of the season against Western Kentucky, and he is second on the team with two saves.
