For the 1st time in program history, the Tar Heels led the ACC in runs per game during conference play with Carolina starters went 16.2 innings in the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, walking three and striking out 12 with a 2.16 ERA. Carolina also led the ACC in batting average (.295) for the 1st time since UNC is 33-0 when scoring 6+ runs, and 34-0 when leading after 7 innnings. The Heels have a +36 run differential in the 1st inning this year (40-14). The UNC bullpen is 23-7 on the season with a 2.87 ERA while the starters are with a 4.30 ERA. Over his last fi ve starts, Criswell has 26 strikeouts and no walks with a 4-0 record. Carolina has won 17 of its last 20 ACC series dating back to last season. Over the last 10 games, Michael Busch is hitting.474 and leads the team in hits (18) and total bases (25). Ike Freeman leads the team in RBI with 15. UNC is in tournament play, with a record under Mike Fox. The Heels are 36-9 all-time when hosting. In the current format, UNC has won eight regional titles. Seven of those have come as hosts six in Chapel Hill, one in Cary (2008). This will be Carolina s 7th time hosting a Super Regional and undefeated in Super Regional play at home. North Carolina has won 26 of its 31 tournament-opening games. This is the 8th time North Carolina has been a top-8 national seed. Only FSU, LSU and Florida have done so more. UNC has reached CWS 5 of previous 7. In Super Regional play, the Tar Heels are 6-1 and have won six straight Super Regional titles with the last coming in 2013 in Chapel Hill. The only loss in the super regionals came in 2003 when the Tar Heels played in Columbia, S.C. HEELS CAN REACH 100 TOURNAMENT WINS North Carolina can become the 15th school to win 100 NCAA tournament games with one win this weekend. The Heels would join Miami, Florida State and Clemson as ACC schools in that category. Right now, Carolina is in tournament play in program history. CAROLINA IN THE SUPERS The Heels are 12-4 all-time in Super Regionals, going 6-1 in series in program history. The last Super Regional Carolina competed in was in 2013, beating South Carolina in three games to advance to the 2013 College World Series. This will be the sixth Super Regional in UNC has hosted in the Mike Fox era (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013) and he is 6-0 in those app. LAST WEEKEND S MILESTONES With Sunday s win over Houston, Carolina notched another 40-win season, the 15th of the Mike Fox era in Chapel Hill since Scoring 19 runs helped the Heels set a new record, most runs scored in an NCAA Tournament game. The previous record was 16 in 2008 Regional play against Mount St. Mary s. The four home runs hit by Carolina last weekend marked the most ever in an NCAA Regional since 2010, when they hit five in the 2010 Norman Regional. HISTORY IN THE REGIONALS This is the 8th time that the Tar Heels have won a regional title under Mike Fox, the first since Six of those eight came in Chapel Hill, the only two exceptions were in 2003 at Starkville, Miss., and 2008 when the Tar Heels played the season in Cary due to construction on Boshmaer Stadium. Zack Gahagan hit two round-trippers, becoming the first Tar Heel to hit multiple home runs in an NCAA Regional since Garrett Gore in He now has three home runs over his last four games. Michael Busch (12th of the season) and Kyle Datres (6th) also hit home runs last weekend. DALATRI SHINING SINCE RETURN Starter Gianluca Dalatri has been back on the mound for the Heels after missing 12 weeks due to injury. In 14 innings since his return (4.0 vs. Virginia Tech, 5.0 vs. Georgia Tech, 5.0 vs. Houston), he has allowed eight hits and one run, walking three and striking out 14. Dalatri tossed 73 pitches against the Yellow Jackets in the second game of the ACC tournament and 70 against Houston in Saturday s second game of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional. In his three appearances he is 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA. BUSCH HEATS UP IN REGIONAL Michael Busch was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional last weekend. The sophomore went 7-11, walking four times, homering and collecting nine RBI. His nine RBI were the most by a Carolina player in an NCAA Regional since Jay Cox drove in 11 runs in Since the May 18 game against Virginia Tech, Busch is (.607) with 12 RBI. DOMINANT OVER LAST 20 The Heels are 15-5 over their last 20 games, 10-0 at home over that stretch. Brandon Riley (.400), Michael Busch (.333), Kyle Datres (.329) and Zack Gahagan (.300) lead the team in batting average over that period. As a team, the Tar Heels are hitting.288/.398/.407 over the past 20 games with 15 home runs and 144 runs scored. On the mound, Carolina has been led by Gianluca Dalatri (14 innings, 0.64 ERA) and Caden O Brien (14.1 innings, 1.26 ERA). CRISWELL CRUISING Cooper Criswell has been dominant on the mound for the Heels since the Miami series. Since his appearance against Miami in which he had 13 strikeouts, Criswell is 4-0 with a 3.51 ERA over 41 innings. During that time, he has posted a Ks/game rate with a 0.44 BBs/game rate for a strikeout to walk ratio of 26:1. Over his last five starts, Criswell has 26 strikeouts and no walks with a 4-0 record. FOX EARNS ACC COACH OF THE YEAR Head coach Mike Fox was named the ACC Coach of the Year for The honor marks the first time that Fox won the award in his 20 seasons at UNC. Fox is the all-time wins leader in UNC baseball history with 884 wins and he has an an all-time coaching record of 1, With 1,423 wins, coach Fox ranks third in winningest active coaches and second in active winning percentage (.732) only behind Florida State s Mike Martin (.736). Fox has coached 21 Major Leaguers in his 20 seasons at UNC and has had 29 All- American selections. FOUR TAR HEELS EARN ACC HONORS Four Tar Heels were named to all-conference teams by the ACC Kyle Datres, Michael Busch, Brandon Riley and Ike Freeman. Datres was named first-team ACC honors at third base after hitting.344 in the regular season. He is the first third baseman to earn a spot on the first team since Colin Moran in Datres, Busch and Riley were all named to the second-team ACC squad. Freeman was given third-team honors after holding down the shortstop position for the Heels, hitting.280 with 42 RBI in the regular season. Started the first two Friday night games of the season before being sidelined with a stress reaction in his right arm. Missed 12 weeks before throwing four shutout innings against VT on 5/19. Is 2-0 in 3 appearances with a 0.64 ERA since returning from injury. Has struck out 14 batters and walked 3. Picked up his fi rst win of the season in the ACC Baseball Championships against GT Went 8.0 innings and struck out 15 batters with no walks against the Highlanders; threw just 99 pitches with 75 strikes and went to a 3-ball count just one time in 28 batters. The 15 strikeouts are the most by a Tar Heel pitcher since Matt Harvey struck out 15 at Clemson in 2010, and are the most for a North Carolina freshman under Mike Fox (since 1999). Won his UNC debut with seven innings of work in a 5-4 victory over Kentucky on Feb. 19. Selected in the 40th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. Three-time all-state performer who led his team to a state title in 2015 and two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in New Jersey.
