The series began in 1997 when the Terps swept a doubleheader from the Hokies, 7-2 and 12-4 (5) at College Park. Later that year, Maryland downed Tech again, 9-8 in Atlanta. In 2000, the Terps beat Tech 10-2 in five innings at Tallahassee, Fla. The two schools met four times last year, splitting the contests. In the regular season, Maryland took 2-of-3 in Blacksburg. In the opener, which was Tech s first-ever ACC contest, Angela Tincher tossed a no-hitter as the Hokies won 5-0. The Terps proceeded to take the next two games, 10-0 (5) and 6-3 to win the series. But the Hokies knocked the Terps out of the ACC Tournament on their home field, beating them 5-3 to advance in the tournament. Tough at Home: Maryland has been tough at Terrapin Softball Complex, winning 78 percent of the games they ve played there since it opened in The Terps are 8-0 at home this year and are all-time at the TSC. Moving Up the Charts: With 39 strikeouts last weekend at Boston College, sophomore Angela Tincher passed the 300 strikeout mark for the year and now has 310. Her own school record of 349 is well in sight. She also now has 659 career Ks. The school record for career Ks is 926, held by Ashlee Dobbe With three hits this past weekend, senior Kelly Brown now has 239 career hits, third-most in school history. Up next in second place is Bronwyn Blair, who had 250 hits and she needs just 16 more hits to break Michelle Meadows school record of 254. The Gold Nationals Tournament is the largest and most prestigious in club softball as 64 teams earned bids to the tournament and then fought for the title over a one-week span. Everhart had the game-winning RBI in a 4-2, 11-inning win over Beverly Bandits when she came up with an RBI single in 11th inning. What s a Hokie? That's the most often-asked question regarding Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Old Hokie" yell which still is used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the words he used had no hidden or symbolic meaning, but had been thought up in an effort to get attention. Hokie soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. Following is the "Old Hokie" yell in its original form: Hoki, Hoki, Hoki Hy! Tech! Tech! V.P.I.! Sola-Rex Sola-Rah Polytech-Vir-gin-i-a!! Rae, Ri, V.P.I. Just Virginia Tech, Please While the full name of the school is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, the school is commonly referred to as Virginia Tech. Founded in 1872, as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, the university changed its named to Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Fans of the athletic department, as well as media covering the Hokies, shortened the name to VPI, but it eventually became Virginia Tech. The State University was added in 1970 to bring the official title to what it is today. Those covering Hokie athletics are asked to refer to the university as simply Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech University, VPI and SU, VPI&SU, VT or VA Tech are not recognized names and should not be used.

6 Runnin Hokies The Tech coaching staff knew it lost a lot of power from its departing senior class, but also knew it had a ton of speed to replace it. The result? Eight stolen bases in eight attempts in a doubleheader at Furman and 13 more at the Holiday Inn Green & White Tournament, including seven against UNC Greensboro, which set a new school record. So the watch is already on. The school record for stolen bases in a season is 71, set in 2004 and the record for attempts is 86, also set in So far, through only 36 games, Tech has 64 swipes in 78 attempts. Preseason Recognition It was just a preseason watch list, but it s much more than that to the Virginia Tech softball program. Sophomore pitcher Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) was named as one 50 players to watch for National Player of the Year honors. This award, which is considered one of the most prestigious honors in women s collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. The 2006 preseason watch list is comprised of 50 players representing 28 schools and 10 different NCAA Division I Conferences. Tincher is one of three players from the ACC on the list and one of just 10 sophomores on the list. There are 26 seniors, 13 juniors and a freshman on the list. It marks the first such honor for any player in the 11-year history of the program. She s done nothing to discourage voters, tossing three no-hitters on the year. What Can Brown Do For You? When we last saw Kelly Brown (Dale City, Va.) in 2005, she was sick at the NCAA Regionals in Knoxville and was taken to the hospital. Turns out she had viral meningitis and had to be held in the hospital for several days. She s back for her senior season and will once again man right field. But this year, she s moved from her leadoff spot to the No. 3 spot in the lineup and is hitting away more. She can still slap and use her speed to get on, but she s CATCHER Hoffman...29 Rokey...15 going to take a much more aggressive approach to hitting this year, using the power slap more often. Last year, she hit.322 for the season with a school-record 76 hits and earned all-region honors. She also had a school-record 24-game hitting streak. In the ACC Tournament, she hit.333 with seven hits, including four doubles and four runs scored, earning all-tournament accolades. This season, she is batting.356 with 42 hits, seven doubles, two triples, 17 RBI and 14 stolen bases. Against UNCG, she tied the school record with five hits and drove in six runs. She is now 16 hits away from breaking the school s career record for hits, held by Michelle Meadows of 254. Introducing... While there was a lot of optimism regarding the freshman class, you can t be sure until they step on the field. Well, if the first half of the season is any indication, the future is bright for the Hokies. Five freshmen have started at least one game and seven of them have seen action. 7 Jessica Everhart (Purcellville, Va.) leads the way in center field, starting all 36 games. She is batting.366 with 37 hits, five doubles, a triple, 14 RBI and four home runs. She had a big two-run home run to open the scoring against Minnesota and drove in the winning runs against Nevada. Charisse Mariconda (Hollywood, Fla.) has 39 hits, nine doubles, two home runs and 18 RBI, starting all 36 games at third base. She is batting.328 this season and had the gamewinning home run against NC State in the ninth inning and against Boston College in the seventh inning. Erin Ota (Irvine, Calif.) has started 27 games at second base and has 34 hits, nine RBI, four stolen bases and is batting a teamleading.420. Kelsy Rokey (Tucson, Ariz.) hit her first collegiate home run against Marshall and caught Angela Tincher s (Eagle Rock, Va.) nohitters against Furman and Radford. Beth Walker (Galax, Va.) has started 18 games overall. On the season, she is batting.354 with 17 hits, four home runs, four doubles, 18 RBI and has drawn 13 walks. Two other freshmen have also contributed. Jenna Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) has a hit, a walk and 11 stolen bases. Morgan Harris (Lovingston, Va.) has also come off the bench to chip in a hit and an RBI. She s Back And Has the Record Callie Rhodes (Broadway, Va.) missed all but six games last year with a knee injury. She was granted a medical redshirt and is fully recovered as she plays her redshirt junior year. As a sophomore in 2004, the speedy Rhodes set a Tech record with 31 stolen bases, coming on 34 attempts. Last year, she was 3-for-3 on stolen bases early in the season before sustaining the injury. She opened the 2006 campaign with three swipes in as many attempts in a doubleheader at Furman and picked up two more at Charlotte s tournament. At the Coastal Carolina tournament, she picked up swipe No. 53 for her career, breaking the school record set by Bronwyn Blair of 52. She now sits with 66 for her career and is 19- for-22 on the season. While in the long run Rhodes, as a junior, will likely take the record, senior Kelly Brown (Dale City, Va.) is right on her heels. Brown has 59 stolen bases entering the upcoming series. Sweet Caroline Tech got a diamond in the rough when sophomore Caroline Stolle (Chester, Va.) walked on last season. She has been a valuable role player, starting 84 games, including 71 in left field, 10 at third base, two at designated player and one at second base. For her career, she has eight home runs, 33 RBI and nine stolen bases. Preseason Votes The Virginia Tech softball team was recognized in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Preseason Poll, receiving 11 votes in the poll which is voted on by NCAA Division I coaches. The 11 votes put them in a tie for 32nd place, their highest preseason ranking ever. Tech entered the 2000 season ranked 33rd in this same poll, picking up 18 preseason votes. Previously, Tech had broken into the top 25 once in the program s history, coming in at No. 25 to end the 1999 season. Two weeks ago, Tech made its first ever regular season appearance in the poll, moving into the No. 23 spot with 52 votes. This week, the team moved back into the Top 25, settling in at the No. 24 spot nationally. Gettin It Done In The Classroom Sophomore Angela Tincher (Eagle Rock, Va.) has been a spark plug on the field, but is also getting it done in the classroom. She was named to the ACC All- Academic Team and will be a strong candidate for Academic All-America honors this year with a 3.79 GPA in finance, insurance and business law.
