2 The 6 Outlook We should play better baseball this year, and I think more speed and a tighter defense will make the difference, said Vic Sorrel]. Sophomores from last year s freshman Big Four championship team are counted on to move into prominent positions in 6. The Wolfpack lost four standouts n all-acc Wayne Edwards, all-acc Bob Conner, catcher George Hayworth, and third baseman Vernon Strickland. We don t have a Conner, but I believe we have a number of good s who ll give us a balanced pitching stall, says Sorrel]. George Allen and Johnny Boughan are seniors counted on to do a lot of pitching. Top performances are also expected from sophomores Bob Johnson, Ray Barlow and Frank Perkinson, along with Louisburg Jr. College graduate Walt Brown. Perkinson is the only left-hander. There are unsettled positions in the infield, but first base and second base should be strong with Don Montgomery at first, and prized soph Pete Parham at second. Tom Hines, a second baseman in 6, is in contention with senior Les Young and sophomore Gary Hale at third base. Shortstop is open with Allan Baker, a reserve last year, and Larry Clary, a junior college all-america er at Louisburg in 6, the top choices. Sophomore Jimmy Cutts, Young, a right-fielder in 6, and Jim Rossi are the catching candidates. There is more depth and defensive ability in the as juniors Warren Lineberger, Ron Erb and Jimmy Kirkman return after letter-winning years. Sophomores John Arganbright and Dave Morgan rate highly. Clary will also see duty in centerfield. Overall the outlook indicates improvement with better hitting, speed and bench strength. Vic Sorrel] Head Coach of Baseball One of the finest and most respected gentlemen in intercollegiate athletics is Vic Sorrel], North Carolina State baseball coach. The former major leaguer is now in his 8th season as Wolfpack baseball coach and has the longest tenure of any coach at State College. His Wolfpack teams have won 8 games and lost 7 with one tie in 7 previous seasons. Under Sorrel] 9 players have gained all-conference honors, with three named all-americas. Besides coaching baseball, Sorrel] is assistant to Athletics Director Roy Clogston. Sorrel] was with the Detroit Tigers of the American League for nine years and won 9 games and lost 0. His best season with the Tigers was in 0 when he had a 6- record. Vic, a native of Morrisville, N. C., played high school ball at Cary and Clayton, before enrolling at Wake Forest College in. In his junior year he had an 8-0 record for the Deacons, and was signed to a Detroit contract in 6. His first pro assignment was with Toronto of the International League where he had an 8-0 record as a rookie. His -7 record the following year at Toronto earned him a berth with the Tigers in 8. He played on the American League championship teams of and 5, and Vic calls his biggest thrill in baseball the Tigers World Series victory of 5. Vic was sent to Toledo in 8. He managed at Bluefield, W. Va., in 9 and 0, with the 9 team winning the league s pennant. He retired from pro baseball in 0 to enter defense work at the Wilmington Shipyards, where he stayed until 5. Vic and his wife, Willa, have two daughters and a son, Vic, Jr., is a second-base candidate on the 6 Wolfpack.
