The UAB pitching staff ranks third in C-USA with a 1.61 team ERA. UAB has recorded 16 shutouts and held opponents to a.206 batting average. Leigh Streetman (11-6) has the league s fifth-best ERA at 1.38 after allowing 28 earned runs through innings pitched while fanning 149. The Green and Gold are currently hitting.255 as a team. Centerfielder Caley Walden leads the team in batting average (.348), hits (55) and runs (27), while shortstop Kayla Orr has registered a team-best 23 RBI. Scouting Alabama Alabama brings a 42-7 record into Wednesday s contest. The Crimson Tide fell twice to Florida over the weekend, suffering back-to-back walk-off losses. The Gators handed Alabama a 6-5 loss on Saturday and a 3-2 loss on Sunday. The Crimson Tide won the first game of the series, 5-0, on Friday. Kayla Braud leads Alabama at the plate with a.439 average, including a team-best 69 hits and 56 runs scored. The Crimson Tide has a trio of hitters with double-digit home runs: Jackie Traina (13), Whitney Larsen (11) and Cassie Reilly-Boccia (10). The duo of Traina and Kelsi Dunne have been solid in the circle. Dunne carries a 1.22 ERA and 21-3 record, while Traina is 16-4 with a 1.48 ERA. Recent Series History In the contest between Alabama and UAB earlier this season, the two teams remained scoreless through six innings before the Crimson Tide scored three in the seventh to earn the 3-0 victory. Alabama is 10-0 against the Blazers, including 6-0 in Tuscaloosa. Last Time Out UAB fell just short against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, suffering a 1-0 loss in the series finale on Sunday afternoon. The lone run of the game came in the first inning, as Tulsa centerfielder Caitlin Everett led off with a double to the gap in left-center. An errant throw on a pickoff attempt proved costly, as Everett made her way to third on the error then scored on shorstop Samantha Cobb s sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Blazers threatened in the seventh thanks to shortstop Catherine Douglass leadoff bunt single to break up the no-hitter. Lowman laced a single to centerfield to put runners at first and second with one out. Two batters later, designated player Kristen McGrath stepped to the plate with two on and two out. McGrath hit one to deep center, but Everett caught the ball at the wall to seal the 1-0 win. 30-Win Mark UAB earned its 30th win of the season with a 7-0 victory over Jacksonville State on April 15. It marks the second-straight season UAB has reached the 30-win plateau and fifth time in program history. Streetman s Strikeouts Freshman pitcher Leigh Streetman recorded 10 strikeouts in UAB s 2-0 win against Kennesaw State on April 12. She topped that performance with 12 strikeouts against East Carolina on April 16, marking the most of her career and most for any Blazer pitcher this season. Stellar Pitching The UAB pitching staff has been stellar so far this season. The Blazer pitchers have combined for a 1.61 ERA, the third-best in C-USA. Latest RPI UAB currently sits 39th in the NCAA RPI. Houston holds the highest spot of any C-USA team at 24th and Tulsa also ranks ahead of the Blazers in 28th. Flawless Start UAB swept back-to-back league series against then-no. 25 Houston and Southern Miss to start conference play a perfect 6-0 for the first time in school history. 3 Save City Lauren Webster recorded her fifth career save in the Blazers series opener against Southern Miss to tie UAB s all-time career saves record held by Kerri Foster. Freshman pitcher Leigh Streetman has posted six saves already this season, the most in the league. Out-hitting Opponents UAB has out-hit its opponents in 27 of the Blazers 33 wins so far this season. UAB is 27-2 when it out-hits its opponents and 3-10 when the Blazers have been out-hit. The Green and Gold are 3-3 when the hits are tied. Lowman Named C-USA Hitter of the Week Mandy Lowman was named the Conference USA Hitter of the Week for the week of March 14. This marks the first weekly honor for the junior catcher this season and the second of her career. She was previously named hitter of the week on March 2, Lowman posted a pair of key home runs for UAB as the Blazers swept a three-game series at No. 25 Houston over the weekend. The Huntsville, Ala., product finished the weekend with three hits, including two long balls and a double. She also tallied two runs and three RBI during the sweep. Smith Named C-USA Pitcher of the Week Alisha Smith was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 7. This marks the first weekly honor for the senior pitcher. Smith picked up a pair of victories and did not allow an earned run in three appearances at the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech in Woodstock, Ga. The Springville, Ala., product surrendered seven hits, no earned runs and struck out 14 batters in 13.1 innings in the circle. Orr, Walden Receive Magic City Classic Honors Shortstop Kayla Orr was named MVP Player of the Magic City Classic and center fielder Caley Walden was tabbed to the all-tournament team. Orr hit.500 with six hits, three runs and six RBI in the Blazers four games. She also blasted the team s first long ball of the season against Alabama State, which was followed up by two more UAB homers in the contest. Walden, UAB s leadoff hitter, posted a.400 batting average with three runs and six total bases for the weekend. Blazer Pitching Depth The Blazers currently have three pitchers giving up less than two earned runs per game in Lauren Webster, Leigh Streetman, Alisha Smith and Lannah Campbell. Streetman (11-6) has spent the most time in the circle for the Blazers so far this season, owning a team-best 1.38 ERA in innings of work. She has struck out a team-high 149 batters and leads C-USA with five saves. She held No. 2/3 Alabama scoreless through six innings and held them to just three hits prior to the final inning. Webster (10-3) has posted an ERA of 1.45 in 58.0 innings of work. In 17 appearances, she has allowed 12 earned runs and held opponents to a.232 batting average. Smith (9-4) has posted a 1.89 ERA in 24 appearances for the Green and Gold. She has registered 83 punchouts and held opponents to a.202 batting average. She was named C-USA s Pitcher of the Week after three solid performances at the Buzz Classic. Armstrong Named To All-Tournament Team Sophomore Kate Armstrong was named to the All-Alabama Classic All-Tournament Team after hitting.357 for the weekend with five hits, one run and five RBI. The Vestavia Hills, Ala., product s best performance of the tournament came against Jacksonville State, when she was 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Three Blazers Tabbed Preseason All-Conference Junior catcher Mandy Lowman, junior shortstop Kayla Orr and sophomore pitcher Lauren Webster were selected to the Conference USA 2011 Preseason All-Conference Team. After standout seasons, Lowman and Orr were tabbed to the 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Mideast Region First Team, while Webster was a second-team selection. In addition, Lowman and Orr were named to the All-C-USA First Team, and Webster was named to the All-C-USA Second Team. Webster was also voted the league s Freshman of the Year after recording a 1.77 ERA and a 17-5 overall record, including a perfect 7-0 record in league play. Blazers Picked To Finish Second In C-USA The Blazers have been picked to finish second in this season s conference race. Houston was picked to win the league in 2011, receiving 70 points and three first-place votes from C-USA s nine head coaches. UAB and 2010 C-USA regular season and tournament champion East Carolina both received 63 votes to be chosen to finish as the runners-up. First-Ever NCAA Tournament Appearance The UAB softball team received the program s first-ever NCAA Championship bid in The Blazers were extended one of the tournament s 34 at-large invitations after a successful regular season. UAB was one of three Conference USA teams to garner an NCAA bid. C-USA regular season and conference champion East Carolina received an automatic bid and traveled to the Austin Regional while UCF traveled to the Gainesville Regional after receiving an at-large bid. 5 Head Coach Marla Townsend 13th Season Alabama 1986 The 2011 season marks the 13th campaign that Marla Townsend has been at the helm of the UAB softball program. Named UAB s first head coach on Sept. 1, 1998, Townsend has guided the program since its infancy. Since coming to UAB, Townsend has coached 37 all-conference athletes and has guided the Blazers to an all-time record of (.487) and a Conference USA mark of (.472). UAB enjoyed its most successful season in school history in 2010 as the Blazers earned the program s first-ever invitation to the NCAA Championship. UAB s win total (37) marked the second-highest in school history and the 15 victories in Conference USA play tied the school record. The Blazers were never ranked lower than No. 38 in the RPI during the season. In addition, UAB had six players named to all-conference teams, including three first-team performers. The Blazers also had four student-athletes receive allregion accolades. The Blazers concluded their 2009 campaign with an overall record of and placed seventh in Conference USA with an 8-16 record. Outfielder Martina Landrum and outfielder/infielder Catherine Douglass, earned all-conference accolades. In 2008, Townsend and her squad ended the season at (9-15 CUSA). Infielder Holly Krzan also concluded her career on top, capturing the all-time records for doubles, games played, games started, total bases and walks. Freshmen Laura Callaway and Caley Walden picked up nominations to the C-USA All-Freshman team. Townsend herself also received honors when she was inducted into the Alabama Amateur Softball Association s Hall of Fame. For Townsend and her 2007 Blazer squad, the season featured several recordbreaking performances and new milestones. Townsend earned her 200th career victory in February as the Blazers won the USF The Game Tournament. The Blazers finished the season (10-13 C-USA), marking the third of four times in history that Townsend s squad has topped the 30-win plateau. Centerfielder Lindsay Stanley, who broke the school s career record with 100 stolen bases, earned first-team all-conference honors, while shortstop Krzan was named to the second team. The 2006 season marked the Blazers best campaign in four years as they finished overall and tied for second in Conference USA. Townsend guided Blazers Under Townsend Ye a r Ove r a l l C-USA H A N Totals her team to a 15-9 C-USA record, best in UAB s history, and received the C-USA Coach of the Year award. The Blazers earned six spots on the C-USA All-Conference teams. Krzan and Stanley took home first-team honors, while Nelson and Kayla Harris were named to the second-team. Harris, along with Andrea Rogers, also earned allfreshman The Townsend File honors. During the 2005 season, Townsend led the Blazers to a mark as UAB finished seventh in the conference. Stanley was named second-team all-conference while Amanda Antonovich was named to the all-freshman team. The 2004 campaign saw the Blazers post at least 20 wins for the fifth season in a row and was one in which UAB claimed two tournament titles. UAB also placed two players on the allconference team, as Beth Mullins was named to the second team and Krzan made the all-freshman squad. In 2003, the Blazers posted their fourth-consecutive 20-win campaign and advanced to the Conference USA Tournament for the fourth straight season. Prior to the 2002 season, UAB was picked to finish seventh in the C-USA preseason polls, but Townsend s team proved the critics wrong by placing third in the regular-season standings with a record. The program s accomplishments did not go unnoticed as Townsend was named the C-USA Coach of the Year by a vote of her peers in the coaching community. The Blazers achieved a school-record mark in 2002 and turned in a programbest, 10-game winning streak during the spring season.
