The Blazers suffered a 4-3 loss to South Dakota to start Saturday, but bounced back to defeat Wisconsin, 8-7, taking the matchup with a fielder s choice double play in the final inning.» The Blazers sealed a winning record for the weekend with a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin on Sunday. In the bottom of the seventh, Ashley Johnson, Mary Warren, and Rachel Dunsford loaded the bases for Kelly Britt, who delivered a sacrifice fly to right to win the game in walk-off fashion. Attfield Off to Hot Start» Junior shortstop Caitlin Attfield has provided a spark at the top of the UAB lineup with a.484 average to start the season. Attfield leads the Blazers in six offensive categories, including batting average, hits (15), total bases (17), slugging percentage (.548), on-base percentage (.543) and stolen bases (3). Additionally, Attfield ranks in the top 10 amongst all Conference USA performers, checking in at fifth in hits and eighth in batting average.» Last weekend at the Islanders Invitational in Corpus Christi, Texas, Attfield batted.600 (9-for-15) with a pair of runs, three RBI, a double and two walks.» Attfield was selected to the preseason C-USA All-Conference Team after setting several single-season school records in 2014, including batting average (.425), hits (88), total bases (120), on-base percentage (.473) and assists (140).» Over her career, Attfield has made four All-Conference USA teams (Second Team and All-Academic Team in 2014; First Team and All-Freshman Team in 2013) and won C-USA Freshman of the Year honors in The Niagara Falls, N.Y. native is also a two-time honoree on the NFCA Mideast Region Second Team and the C-USA Commissioner s Honor Roll UAB Softball Numerical Roster No. Name Pos. While this is inevitable, it is important to note that the two are indeed separate institutions. Blazers the Co-Favorite in Conference USA» The UAB softball team was selected as the co-favorite to win the 2015 Conference USA championship in a poll by league coaches. UAB and co-favorite FIU received five votes apiece. The Blazers are coming off five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, and are returning 15 players, including seven of nine regulars from last season s lineups. Record Watch» Junior shortstop Caitlin Attfield already finds herself at the top of the UAB record books, checking in to five different categories.» Among qualifiers, Attfield has the highest career batting average in school history. Through nine games this season, Attfield has hit.484 to raise her career batting average to.400. Attfield hit.425 last spring, a single-season school record, and.359 in 2013.» With a.548 slugging percentage thus far this season, Attfield moves up to fifth all-time in slugging percentage (.484), and is just shy of Martina Landrum for the top spot in on-base percentage (.459).» After stealing 25 bases in 2013, nine in 2014 and adding three more this season, Attfield rounds out her offensive resume with the seventh-most stolen bases (37) in UAB history.» Attfield has also developed a strong defensive game throughout her career, as her final spot in the career record books is in the assists column. Attfield recorded 20 assists during this season s two tournaments to bring her total to 260 and move up to eighth all-time.» Across the infield from Attfield, senior Heather Pearson also finds her name in UAB s record books. With a pair of walks in the opening weekend s Plainsman Invite, Pearson is up to 71 career walks, moving into a tie for fourth all-time at UAB. Additionally, Pearson sits at ninth in school history in career on-base percentage (.368).» In her third year behind the plate for the Blazers, Ashley Johnson has consistently been one of UAB s strongest defensive performers. After 483 career chances, Johnson boasts a.990 fielding percentage - the best mark in school history.

The Blazers entered the 2015 season with an all-time record of (.517) and a Conference USA record of (.517). UAB has recorded eight 30-win seasons, reached the conference tournament 10 times and has made an NCAA Regional in five consecutive seasons. Team 16» 2015 marks the introduction of Team 16 - a reference used by UAB coaches and players to indicate this year s squad as it relates to the number of years the Blazers have had Division I softball. 5 Scouting the Tournament Field» This weekend, UAB will be squaring off against Villanova and Harvard for the first time in program history. The Blazers have met the remaining teams one time, earning a victory over Robert Morris in 2000 (10-2) and suffering losses to Wichita State in 2000 (4-3) and Texas State in 2009 (10-5).» The Villanova Wildcats, UAB s first opponent, have not played a game yet this season. After finishing overall last year, Villanova was picked to finish seventh by league coaches in the Big East preseason poll. The Wildcats return eight lineup regulars from last season, and are led by right-hander Kate Poppe, who finished last season with a 2.05 ERA and 284 strikeouts.» After the conclusion of its game with Villanova, UAB will play the Texas State Bobcats, who have started the season 5-5. The Bobcats are outscoring opponents this season, and are led at the plate by Ariel Ortiz, who is batting.429 with three home runs and nine RBI. On the mound, Texas State s Randi Rupp is 3-3 with a pair of saves, a 3.50 ERA and 53 strikeouts.» The Blazers begin their Saturday slate with a matchup against the Wichita State Shockers, who have begun their season 6-3. The biggest of the Shockers six wins came on Feb. 14, when they knocked off No. 25 Texas, Wichita State s Cacy Williams is batting.387 with a pair of home runs and nine RBI, and rely on the tandem of Katie Malone and Jenni Brooks on the mound, who are a combined 4-2. C-USA Pct Totals: Head Coach Marla Townsend Named UAB s first head coach by Gene Bartow on Sept. 1, 1998, Marla Townsend has guided the program since its infancy. Since coming to UAB, Townsend has coached 63 all-conference athletes and has guided the Blazers to an all-time record of (.517) and Conference USA mark of (.534). Over the years, Townsend has sculpted her program around five core values - competitive, pride, relentless, family and excellence - and reinforced family by assembling a staff composed entirely of Townsend s former players. In 2014, Townsend guided UAB to its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament, making the Blazers just one of 23 programs to accomplish the feat. Playing the nation s second-toughest non-conference schedule and 10th overall toughest schedule, Townsend and UAB reached its highest RPI ranking in program history, being tabbed No. 26 on March 31. Townsend picked up her 450th career win in the 2014 campaign on May 3, splitting a doubleheader against the UTSA Roadrunners. The victory also gave the Blazers their 450th win of all-time. Entering the 2014 season, UAB found itself ranked in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association s (NFCA) Preseason Top-25 poll for the first time, coming in at No. 21. Several records fell in the 32-win season, including a team-best 57 homeruns. UAB tallied a.366-team on-base percentage, another record for Team XV. Townsend and her staff led the Blazers to their best defensive effort in history, committing just 49 errors and posting a.971 fielding percentage, which ranked No. 30 in the NCAA. Five UAB Blazers found themselves with All-Conference-USA honors at the year s end, while four earned selections to the NFCA Mideast Region Team. Under Townsend, UAB completed a record-breaking season in The Blazers reached the 40-win plateau for the first time ever with a record on their way to a berth in the NCAA Super Regional in Gainesville, Fla. It was the first Super Regional appearance in program history for the Blazers, and UAB s fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. UAB had six players earn All-Conference USA honors, while four individuals made the NFCA Mideast Region Team. Among other team honors in the 2013 season, Townsend was named the Conference USA Coach of the Year and freshman Caitlin Attfield was tabbed the C-USA Freshman of the Year. The 2013 NCAA Louisville Regional Champions finished the season ranked No. 16 ranking in the USA Today/NFCA and the No. 17 ranking in the ESPN.com/USA Softball final 2013 polls after winning the Conference USA regular season title for the first time. Following the season, the UAB coaching staff was named by the NFCA as the Mideast Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2012, UAB finished the season with an overall record of and a 17-7 mark in Conference USA. The 17 league wins tie the most ever in program history. The squad featured two NFCA All-Region selections and six All-Conference USA performers, including one first team, four second team and one all-freshman honorees. UAB enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in school history in 2011 as the Blazers earned the program s second consecutive invitation to the NCAA Championship. UAB s win total (39) tied the most in program history set in 2002 and the 17 victories in Conference USA play surpassed the school record (15). In addition, three players were named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team, representing the most selections in program history and the most among any C-USA team in Furthermore, the Blazers began conference play with a perfect 6-0 record for the first time in school history. In 2010, the Blazers earned the program s first-ever invitation to the NCAA Championship. UAB s win total (37) marked the second-highest in school history and the 15 victories in Conference USA play tied the school record. The Blazers were never ranked lower than No. 38 in the RPI during the season. Townsend is a graduate of Pinson Valley High School in 1982 and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in She continued her education with a master s degree from UAB in 1991 and has also added an education specialist degree from the University of Montevallo in She has one daughter, Maia, who was born on Feb. 21, 2004.
