Wil Myers hits for first cycle of 2017 in the most exciting way possible BY: GABRIEL BAUMGAERTNER Sports Illustrated For all those who picked Wil Myers to hit the first cycle of the 2017 season, it s time to collect your winnings. The Padres outfielder, freshly minted with a six-year, $83 million contract signed in the offseason, compiled the rare feat with spectacular efficiency and finished it in a most exciting manner during San Diego s 5 3 win over the Rockies on Monday night. Myers only needed four at bats to become the second Padre in history to hit for the cycle (teammate Matt Kemp did it in 2015, also against Colorado at Coors Field) and drove in two runs to lift the Padres to 4 4 this season. After a disastrous opening series against the Dodgers that saw them get outscored 28 10, the Padres took two of three from the Giants last weekend and won the first of a three-game set with Colorado. The cycle is generally regarded as a statistical oddity with little value outside of sentimentality, but it remains a notable personal feat. When a player finishes the accomplishment with a triple, it generates plenty of excitement. Just watch Myers race around the bases (and trip on his way to third base) accompanied by an excited call. As Steve Staude analyzed in excruciating detail after Mike Trout accomplished the feat in 2013, hitting for the cycle is a legitimate statistical rarity. Staude admits that even his calculations are faulty because of ballpark factors and lineup placement; Myers was hitting third (an ideal lineup slot for a player to hit for the cycle) and playing in Coors Field (the ideal destination because of its cavernous dimensions and thin air). Before denigrating Myers s accomplishment, remember that Myers did it in his only four plate appearances; it has taken others two to three more trips to the plate to finish it. Sabermetricians have deemed the feat generally insignificant because pretty much anyone can achieve it and it is insufficient in gauging a player s long-term value, but it makes for a brief moment of excitement and a worthy ballpark memory. Myers s offensive bonanza on Monday night secured a victory for a team that s garnered some recent momentum and provided Padres fans with a highlight that they ll probably savor while their team (likely) heads for 100 losses. As far as cycles go, doing it in four plate appearances and finishing it with a triple is about as perfect as any cycle can get. It also conjures the glorious memory of Bengie Molina, one of the best catchers but slowest players to ever grace the Big Leagues, finishing his only career cycle with a triple. Kudos to you, Wil Myers, on hitting for the cycle. 2

Wil Myers completes second cycle in Padres history BY: DENNIS LIN San Diego Union Tribune Seven thousand four hundred and forty-three games came and went before a Padres player hit for the cycle. San Diego had to wait only 215 more for a repeat. In the top of the eighth Monday at Coors Field, Padres first baseman Wil Myers sent a line drive into the gap in left-center, rounded first base, dashed past second and wound up at third to complete the second cycle in franchise history. The final score Padres 5, Rockies 3 went down as a footnote. The parallels between the Padres first and latest cycle were stunning. On Aug. 14, 2015, also here in Denver, outfielder Matt Kemp tripled in the ninth for the first cycle of his career, making Padres history in the process. Monday s cycle was the first of Myers career, achieved in the Padres first game against former manager Bud Black, who, like so many before him, never saw the feat during his San Diego tenure. He was fired two months before Kemp slid into third at Coors Field. The Padres have since gone all-in on a youth movement, much of it below the major league level. Myers, who signed a club-record, $83 million extension in January, is San Diego s most recognizable face for now and the foreseeable future. Monday, the image was reinforced in historic fashion. Those moments don t happen very often on a baseball field, Padres manager Andy Green said. To see somebody get it, someone s who s kind of the cornerstone of your franchise now, too, it was a lot of fun to watch. Myers singled in the first, ripped an RBI double in the third, launched an opposite-field home run in the sixth and came up in the eighth, needing the rarest type of hit to complete the cycle. Rockies reliever Carlos Estevez threw a strike. Myers fouled off another pitch. Down 0-2, he saw an 87 mph slider. He swung. He connected. I was screaming three, Padres manager Andy Green said. I usually don t get into it that much. I was screaming three to myself, Myers said. Inside. I wasn t screaming out loud. I wasn t even thinking about a triple (when Myers went up to bat). I was just trying to put a good swing on it. As soon as I hit it, I was going three the whole way. 3

Shortly after passing second, Myers nearly stumbled but kept his balance. He arrived at third standing up. There was no throw to the bag. He was really, really excited, said third base coach Glenn Hoffman, who also had been there to congratulate Kemp in Just was hoping he didn t fall down between second and third, because he was trying so hard. The cycle was the first of the major league season. It was the 15th all-time at Coors Field, including the eighth by a visiting team. The last two belong to the Padres. It s pretty wild, Myers said. This is obviously a place to do it. Myers had never hit for the cycle at any level of baseball. He estimated he d finished a triple shy of the cycle three times in his career. He had experienced success at Coors Field, where he entered the day hitting.323 with five home runs in 16 games. His 17th here will be remembered for years to come. His four hits, none bigger than the last, tied a career high. His teammates helped ensure history was made for the winning side. Manuel Margot walked in the third, scoring the game's first run on Myers double. Moments after Myers home run, Hunter Renfroe, playing his first career game at Coors Field, also cleared the right-field wall, with a two-run blast. In the eighth, Myers scored on Yangervis Solarte s sacrifice fly. Right-hander Jarred Cosart, making a spot start in place of Trevor Cahill, threw four scoreless innings. He induced three double plays and debuted a slider he had been tinkering with since the final week of spring training. From there, the Padres relied on a cadre of bullpen arms. Colorado s D.J. LeMahieu hit a solo home run in the sixth, ending the shutout bid. Mark Reynolds launched a two-run shot in the ninth, pulling the Rockies to within two runs. It would not be enough. Myers cycle came in a victory. Now we ve got two, Hoffman said. Now we need a no-hitter. What's it like to get VIP treatment after catching home run ball? Beau knows BY: KIRK KENNEY San Diego Union Tribune Beau Stewart s grin was ear to ear at the Padres game Sunday afternoon. He can t stop smiling. said Lucy Stewart, Beau s mom. 4

That s what happens when you re in the midst of a lifetime memory. Beau, a 14-year-old Padres fan from Rancho Penasquitos, caught center fielder Manuel Margot s first career home run ball at Friday s home opener. He returned the ball so Margot could put it on his mantle. At the time, pitcher Brandon Maurer gave Beau three bullpen balls in exchange for the home run ball. The Padres sweetened the deal substantially on Sunday, giving Beau, his mom, dad Ben and sister Baylor the VIP treatment before the game against San Francisco. When we learned of Beau s story, Padres COO Erik Greupner said, we invited him to come back on our Military Opening Day to meet Manuel and receive an autographed ball and bat. Manuel and Beau spent time in the dugout before the game and will now share a great memory of Manuel s first career major league home run. Beau had been invited to Friday s home opener by good friend Patrick McClellan, who had seats in the front row of the left-center bleachers adjacent to the Padres bullpen. That s where Margot blasted a first-inning homer for the Padres off Giants starter Matt Cain. The ball sailed right over Beau s head, took a couple of bounces, and the youngster came up with it. Margot added his second homer a couple innings later. When I first got the ball, I didn t really think about what happened, Beau said. When the bullpen pitcher came up and gave me the other balls, I heard someone behind me say that was (Margot s) first career home run. Then I knew why they wanted to get the ball back. Since he already had returned the ball, Beau didn t think anything else would come of it. A Padres official contacted the Stewarts after seeing a Union-Tribune story about the home run ball. He s a pretty humble kid, so he thought it was pretty cool that he even got the bullpen balls, Lucy Stewart said. He wasn t concerned about what he could get out of the deal.... Other people said, You didn t get a bat? What s going on? He didn t realize that that s even a thing that people did. It was pretty cool that the Padres were looking out for him and called him back in. Beau won t soon forget the chance to meet Margot in the Padres dugout. He asked me what position I play and then we talked about the two homers he hit in his first few at-bats, said Beau, a right-handed pitcher on the Westview High freshman baseball team. It was pretty cool. After getting to go on the field, the Stewarts were given seats near home plate to enjoy the game. 5

He loves every single minute of everything baseball, Lucy Stewart said, so the whole experience for him has been really cool. Dinelson Lamet debuts well for El Paso BY: JEFF SANDERS San Diego Union Tribune Like Walker Lockett, Dinelson Lamet, too, made a strong debut in a hitter s park. The 24-year-old Lamet struck out six over 5 1/3 scoreless innings and Jamie Romak hit his third homer in two days in Triple-A El Paso s 7-2 win over visiting Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon. Ranked the 12th-best prospect in the Padres organization by MLB.com, Lamet (1-0, 0.00) scattered five hits and one walk while throwing 57 of his 85 pitches for strikes. Lamet started the previous season in the California League and was 0-2 with a 4.22 ERA in his two starts in the Pacific Coast League. Cory Spangenberg (.357) hit his first homer, Colliin Cowgill (.333) hit his second and Rocky Gale (.222) drove in two runs on two hits. Romak is 7-for-14 to start the season with three homers, a double and four RBIs. Right-hander Carlos Fisher (0.00) turned in 1 2/3 scoreless innings, right-hander Kevin Quackenbush (9.00) allowed two runs in the eighth and right-hander Jason Jester (0.00) pitched a perfect ninth. The Chihuahuas are 3-1 to start the season. DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (2-2) Arkansas 8, Missions 2: RHP Justin Hancock (0-1, 13.50) allowed three runs in two innings after RHP Brett Kennedy (4.50) struck out six and allowed two runs in four innings in the start. 2B Noah Perio (.286) drove in both runs on his first homer and CF Alberth Martinez (.500) went 2- for-3. HIGH SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (2-2) Modesto 6, Storm 2: RHP Jean Cosme (0-1, 2.25) struck out three and allowed a run on five hits and a walk in four innings. LHP Jose Castillo (4.50) pitched the last two innings, allowing two runs on a hit and two walks. CF Michael Gettys (.389) went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI and DH Ty France (.333) collected two hits. SS Javier Guerra struck out twice in an 0-for-4 day that dropped his average to

LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (2-2) TinCaps 3, Bowling Green 2: 18-year-old DH Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his first home run above rookie ball and LHP Ben Sheckler (1-0, 0.00) struck out seven over 2 2/3 hitless innings in relief for the win. LHP Jerry Keel (1.42) started the game with two runs one earned allowed on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out eight. Grand slam spoils Eric Lauer's Storm debut BY: JEFF SANDERS San Diego Union Tribune Eric Lauer struck out seven but allowed four runs in 3 2/3 innings in his California League debut in high Single-A Lake Elsinore s 5-2 loss to visiting Visalia on Monday night at The Diamond. All four runs crossed the plate in the third inning after the left-handed Lauer one of the Padres three first-round picks in 2016 struck out the side in the second. But he walked the leadoff hitter in the third, allowed a one-out single, issued a two-out walk and then served up a grand slam to Fernery Ozuna. Lauer (0-1, 9.82) got the first two outs of the fourth and was lifted after giving up a single and a walk. He finished with five hits and three walked allowed and threw 51 of his 81 pitches for strikes. Right-hander Zech Lemond (0.00) struck out four over 2 1/3 innings and right-hander Jose Ruiz (0.00) struck out a batter and walked a batter in a scoreless ninth. Storm shortstop Javier Guerra (.143) doubled but also struck out three times in four at-bats and Ty France (.313) also doubled. The Storm are 2-3. TRIPLE-A EL PASO (3-2) Las Vegas 2, Chihuahuas 0: RHP Bryan Rodriguez (0.00) scattered three hits and a walk over five scoreless innings before RHP Logan Bawcom (0-1, 3.00) allowed a run on three walks in two innings. RHP Phil Maton (9.00) struck out two in a scoreless ninth. 2B Diego Goris (.293) went 3-for-4 with a double and LF Jose Pirela (.300) went 2-for-4 for El Paso s only hits. Pirela also swiped his third base. DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (2-2) 7

The Missions game was rained out and will be made up Tuesday as part of a doubleheader. RHPs Jake Esch and Kyle Lloyd will make the starts. Before the game, SS Jose Rondon was placed on the seven-day disabled list with a pull hamstring. LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (2-3) South Bend 5, TinCaps 3: RHP Hansel Rodriguez (0-1, 7.20) struck out four and allowed four runs on six hits in five innings. RHP Emmanuel Ramirez (7.20) allowed an unearned run in three innings and RHP Nick Monroe (0.00) struck out a batter in the ninth. 2B Reinaldo Ilarraza (.286) doubled, tripled, walked, stole a base and knocked in a run in four plate appearances and CF Buddy Reed (.167) went 2-for-5 with a steal and a run scored. Padres aim for Austin Hedges to make starts BY: DENNIS LIN San Diego Union Tribune With Rule 5 catcher Luis Torrens making his first major league start Monday, Austin Hedges was on the bench for the second time this season. The Padres primary backstop is scheduled to return to his usual role Tuesday and Wednesday, which would give him eight of the Padres first 10 starts behind the plate. Ideally, Hedges will approximate that pace over the course of the full season. I d put him in the 120-to-135 range (for starts), manager Andy Green said. That s the sweet spot that d be nice to hit. But we ll leave some wiggle room as the season unfolds. Much as a youth-dominated roster is relying on the instruction of Green and his coaches, there is no confusion about the Padres on-field anchor. Hedges has long been groomed for this role, 2015 the only season of his career in which he did not play nearly every game; with their catching depth insufficient, the Padres had prematurely promoted the then-prospect to the majors. Now 24, Hedges is ripe for opportunity. The catcher does not have a specific number of starts in mind, but I like to play every day, he said before Monday s game. I m here to play, I m not here to watch. So any chance I get to be in the lineup and hopefully help our team get a win, I d like to be ready. Even a day like today when I m off, I m still going to be swinging between innings. If I get a pinch-hit opportunity or we need a double-switch or something, if I can help the team win, I ve got to be ready to go. In 2015, then-starter Derek Norris wore down as he went from a platoon in Oakland to a careerhigh 116 starts at catcher. As Green mentioned, the Padres could adjust Hedges workload as the year progresses. 8

But there is reason to believe Hedges, a catching prodigy since his amateur days, is equipped for the grind. Other than 2015, I have played every day, Hedges said. I caught a lot last year. I missed over a month but still ended up catching almost 100 games. So I was catching quite a bit, and I feel like what I ve done in the offseason has prepared me to do that. As much as I can. That s the goal. Offense remains a question mark for Hedges, who showed notable improvement last season, albeit in Triple-A. Entering Monday, he was 0-for-18 to begin 2017, still in search of his first hit. I don t feel like I need to change really anything, Hedges said. I like my approach right now, I like the swings I m taking, I ve watched the film, I ve talked to our coaches and we re all on the same page. It s part of it, so I ve just got to run out there with the same attitude, the same mentality, and (the hits will) come. In an equally small sample size, Hedges has continued to draw praise for his work on defense and with the Padres pitchers. I couldn't possibly be more pleased with him as a competitor, Green said over the weekend. You can see by looking in his eyes the intent he has behind the plate. Pitchers feed off that.... They know he cares about their success. He shows that in every bit of body language. That s a winning baseball player. Other catching notes With backup catcher Hector Sanchez on the seven-day disabled list due to concussion symptoms, Torrens marked a career milestone Monday. Before this season, the 20-year-old had never played above the Low Single-A level. Like teammate and fellow Rule 5 player Allen Cordoba on Saturday, Torrens did not find out he was starting until he arrived in the clubhouse Monday and scanned the lineup card. Figured it d probably keep them sleepless all night, so I d rather ambush them with their first start, Green said. I ll communicate better in the future, but I deliberately told them nothing. Sanchez, meanwhile, looks as if he will be able to come off the disabled list later this week. He hit in the cage Monday and will steadily increase his activity. He s feeling really good, we re getting really positive reports and he s moving towards coming back on time, Green said. I m probably going to be inclined to try to slow it down a day or two, from my perspective. Notable 9

Left-hander Buddy Baumann, who opened the season on the disabled list because of shoulder soreness, is not close to returning. Still at the Padres spring-training facility in Arizona, Baumann recently resumed light throwing but didn t feel perfect, Green said. Right-hander Carter Capps (Tommy John surgery) will make his first rehab appearance with High Single-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday. Statcast of the Day: Myers hits for cycle BY: OWEN PERKINS MLB.com DENVER - Wil Myers came into Coors Field smoking hot, a one-man wrecking crew in the milehigh ballpark, and by the time he pulled into third with an eighth-inning triple to complete the second cycle in Padres history and cap a 5-3 Padres victory, he could melt the steel girders framing the park with his historic prowess at the plate. Myers singled to right in the first, drove an RBI double to left in the second, homered into the right field bullpen to lead off the sixth, and then tripled to the left-center gap against Carlos Estevez to lead off the eighth and complete the cycle. "As soon as I hit it I knew that the triple was a possibility, and that was what I was trying to do," Myers said. "I was screaming 'three' to myself." Myers wasn't alone, as his teammates and even his manager were on their feet rooting him to third. "I usually try to be as even-keeled as I can, but you don't see cycles very often," Padres manager Andy Green said. "I knew he had the speed for it if it got past [Gerardo] Parra. And when it snuck past him, I felt pretty good about it as long as he didn't stumble on the bases." Myers admitted he was digging so hard for third that he nearly did stumble. "If I had fell, I would have still tried for it," he said. Oddly enough, the only other cycle from a Padres player also came at Coors Field when Matt Kemp completed the feat on Aug. 14, On top of the significance to the Padres franchise, Myers' cycle rose toward the top of the Statcast leaderboard in terms of the average exit velocity on a cycle. His single left the bat at mph, his double at mph, his homer at mph, and the cycle-capping triple at 97.8 mph velocity, which may have helped it elude Parra from bouncing back too quickly from the left-center fence. 10

Though it was his fourth game with four hits, it was the first time in the Statcast era that Myers ever had four hits with an exit velocity of 95 mph or more. The mph average exit velocity was second only to the Rangers' Shin-Soo Choo's mph average velocity on his July 21, 2015 cycle, also at Coors Field. Myers overcame his toughest statistical obstacle with the home run, which had a probability of only 39 percent in those circumstances, but Myers was on a mission and probability bent his way. "Those moments don't happen very often on a baseball field," Green said. "To see somebody get it, someone who's kind of a cornerstone of your franchise now, too, it's a lot of fun to watch. Everybody was pretty fired up for him tonight." Rockies manager Bud Black managed Myers in the first baseman's first year with the Padres in '15, and wasn't surprised to see this kind of output. "His strength is to hit the ball to all fields, which you saw tonight," Black said. "You saw a ball down the left field line, you saw a ball hit to right field, you saw a ball hit to left-center. So he's a talented young player. I think that a lot of people in this game saw that early on. And he's realizing that potential." Myers had come close to a cycle before, but the triple always eluded him. He previously had four other games with a single, double and home run, but in each of those he got his final hit in his last at-bat. "I think I've been a triple shy from the cycle three times," Myers said. "I wasn't even thinking about a triple, honestly. I just tried to put a good swing on it, because I know no lead's safe here in Colorado "In that situation right there when we really needed a run, it seemed like a good opportunity to take a chance, so it kind of lined up perfectly." Myers finished the game with a career.357 (25-for-70) average at Coors Field with 17 runs, four doubles, one triple, six homers, and 17 RBIs. "I really enjoy hitting here," Myers said. "You see the ball really well, it's a great hitter's eye, it's a huge outfield, a lot of hits out there. It's my favorite place to come hit, here and Yankee Stadium, but a great place, fun place to play." 11

Both Padres cycles have come at Coors Field BY: ADRIAN GARRO MLB.com The Padres paid their first visit of the season to Coors Field for a 5-3 win over the Rockies on Monday night, and something happened in the game that has only happened one other time in Padres history: A player hit for the cycle -- Wil Myers, to be specific. Myers, who had a rather interesting trip to the plate on Sunday against the Giants at Petco Park, had four more interesting at-bats on Monday en route to his cycle. In chronological order, Myers' hits came in the first inning (single), third inning (double), sixth inning (home run) and, for maximum dramatic value, triple (in the eighth inning, which happened after he laced a ball into the gap and ran like a man possessed): The added wrinkle of team-specific fun added to this story, amazingly, has a lot to do with the lone other cycle in Padres history, which Matt Kemp recorded on Aug. 14, with a ninthinning triple at Coors Field. Seriously, he did the same thing, in the same ballpark, with the hardest part of the accomplishment carried out in his final at-bat of the night (aided by Coors Field's outfield wall): Eerie. And by the time Myers' feat was done, he and his teammates had some fun in the dugout in celebration. Lee back in big leagues with Padres BY: OWEN PERKINS MLB.com DENVER -- Zach Lee was scheduled to make his first start in the Padres' organization Monday with Triple-A El Paso. The news that he was being scratched from his start was more than tempered by the reason for the scratch -- his call-up to the Padres, and a second chance at making a first impression in the big leagues. The Padres needed to add a pitcher to the roster after Trevor Cahill landed on the disabled list with a strained lower back. 12

Lee, 25, was the Dodgers 2013 and 2015 Branch Rickey Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and he earned a couple call-ups to L.A. in '15, though he only made one appearance -- a July 25 road loss to the Mets when he gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. It wasn't exactly a forgettable cup of coffee, but if he can pitch like the Padres think he can, he'll put that memory in the rearview mirror. "Zach's got a feel for pitching," manager Andy Green said before Monday's series opener in Colorado. "It's a four-pitch mix. It's any pitch at any point in time. It's moving the ball around the strike zone. It's attacking hitters' weaknesses. He's one of those guys that's going to pitch to a scouting report and do it very well." Lee was never better than in '15, when he went 11-6 with a 2.70 ERA in 19 starts for Triple-A Oklahoma City in the offensive-oriented Pacific Coast League. "Any time you can have a sub-three in the PCL, you're doing something right," Lee said. He couldn't replicate that success in '16, going a combined 7-14 with a 6.14 ERA in a Triple-A season split between Oklahoma City and Tacoma after a June 16 trade to the Mariners. The Padres claimed him off waivers on Dec. 13. "It's been a grind," Lee said of his journey from his last Major League appearance to his current call-up. "It's hard to get up here, then it's even harder to stay up here. I got mechanically out of whack and just fell into a bad little dip there last year." Lee went to work as soon as the season ended, trying to find his form again and get himself ready for the next opportunity. "I worked a little bit with Skip Johnson, a pitching coach that I've worked with in the past," Lee said. "I tried to break down what was the big difference between '15 and '16. I got a little bit more bend on my back leg. I wasn't quite attacking as much. I was kind of a little tentative as far as making pitches, rather than going out there and trying to be aggressive and execute pitches down in the zone early." Lee will pitch in long relief "for now," as Green said, or "for today" as Lee put it, hoping for a quick chance to put his experience keeping the ball down in the zone in the PCL to use. "Ground balls don't go out; fly balls do," Lee said. "A lot like here at Coors Field." 13

Padres unveil tribute to Jerry Coleman BY: BILL CENTER San Diego Padres During the majority of his 42 seasons with the Padres, the press box was Jerry Coleman's second home. On Sunday, the Padres unveiled a tribute case honoring Coleman in the media dining room at Petco Park, which can be viewed by fans as one of the stops when taking a ballpark tour. The display captures the three major segments of Coleman's life - his career as a Marine aviator and as the only Major League player to see combat in two wars, his playing career with the New York Yankees and his Hall of Fame career as a broadcaster. "This is an incredible tribute for Jerry," Maggie Coleman said Sunday as she viewed the display of her late husband, who died Jan. 5, 2014, at the age of 89. "Jerry loved being at the ballpark," Maggie Coleman continued. "He loved being around people at the ballpark. This is beautiful." Prominent in the display are the awards from the three national Halls of Fame where Coleman is enshrined - the U.S. Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame (inducted 2005), the Ford C. Frick Award for Meritorious Service to Broadcasting for the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. (inducted '05) and the Radio Hall of Fame (inducted '07). Coleman was also inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame in '01, and in '13 he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Breitbard Hall of Champions in San Diego. Among other prominent items in the display, which were loaned to the Padres by his widow, is the letter of commendation sent to Lt. Col. Jerry Coleman in 1952 by General Lemuel C. Sheppard Jr., the commandant of the U.S. Marine Corp, a 1940s Yankees cap, his flight jacket from the Korean War, a picture of the F4U Corsair he flew in Korea and a Yankees picture taken with Joe DiMaggio. There is a copy of the tribute story printed by USA Today after his passing that includes one of Coleman's more remembered quotes: "There are only two important things in life: the people who you love and who love you, and your country." Coleman was the radio voice of the Padres from , with the exception of the 1980 season when he served as the club's manager at the personal request of owner Ray Kroc. 14

To the Padres, Coleman was more the soul of the franchise beyond being the voice and ambassador. To fellow Americans and veterans, he was an American hero. And to past and present ballplayers, Coleman was a player who despite twice having his career interrupted by the call to duty, was a World Series MVP and an All-Star while playing for the New York Yankees ( ) in six World Series. As a Marine aviator, Coleman flew 120 missions in two wars in a Dauntless dive bomber in World War II and 60 more in Korea. The Petco Park display features one of his two Distinguished Flying Crosses and several of his 13 Air Medals and three Navy Citations. On Sept. 15, 2012, the Padres celebrated "Jerry Coleman Day" by unveiling a statue at Petco Park that celebrates the three major phases of Coleman's live - war hero, player and broadcaster. The ceremony marked Coleman's 70th year in baseball and 40th with the Padres. Weaver makes first start at Coors Field BY: OWEN PERKINS MLB.com The Padres and Rockies pit a seasoned veteran against a rookie about as raw as they come when they play the middle game of their three-game set Tuesday. Right-hander Jered Weaver, 34, brings 322 big league games under his belt to his second start as a Padre. Rockies rookie righty Antonio Senzatela has one. Full Game Coverage Weaver's 150 big league wins and his career 3.55 ERA at the start of the season didn't scare the Dodgers, who touched him for four runs on five hits and three walks in L.A. Thursday. This will be Weaver's first career appearance at Coors Field. Senzatela, on the other hand, was sensational in his big league debut against the Brewers, pitching five shutout innings and allowing just two hits and three walks while striking out six. Three things to know about this game As he gets ready to pitch at Coors Field, Weaver will have to work carefully. The veteran righty didn't throw a single pitch that reached 86 mph in his Padres debut last Thursday at Dodger Stadium, and one ball he left up in the zone resulted in a mph Yasiel Puig homer - the second-hardest big fly allowed by Weaver in the Statcast era. 15

Weaver has been dominant in limited exposure to the Rockies. Mark Reynolds, Carlos Gonzalez, Gerardo Parra, and Alexi Amarista are the only Rockies to have faced him, going a collective 2-for-21, with Parra and Amarista each reaching on singles. Senzatela jumped from Double-A Hartford, where he went 4-1 with a 1.82 ERA over seven starts in an injury shortened '16 season. Rule 5 catcher Torrens gets first start BY: OWEN PERKINS MLB.com DENVER -- Twenty-year-old rookie Luis Torrens got his first big league start in the series opener in Colorado on Monday. Though the Padres had four catchers on their Opening Day roster, manager Andy Green describes Christian Bethancourt -- a catcher throughout his previous four big league seasons -- as a reliever who can catch, play the outfield, and pinch hit. Hector Sanchez, the primary back-up backstop, is on the disabled list. Starting catcher Austin Hedges has caught six of the Padres' first seven games, and is off to an 0-for-18 start. Full Game Coverage Green said Torrens' start is more about Hedges needing a break than anything else. "I did the same thing to Torrens I did to [Allen] Cordoba, which is give them no heads up whatsoever," Green said of the first start for his two Rule 5 position players. "I figured it would probably keep them sleepless all night. I'd rather ambush them with their first start. I'll communicate better in the future, but I deliberately told them nothing. Probably got their juices flowing when they came in and looked at the lineup card." Torrens is now 0-for-4 this season after going hitless in two at-bats in Monday's 5-3 win over the Rockies. Sanchez hit in the batting cage Monday and is optimistic about getting back on time, according to Green. He told his manager the concussion is "incredibly mild" compared to others he's been through. Capps on tap Right-handed reliever Carter Capps is scheduled to make his first rehab appearance Tuesday with Class-A Lake Elsinore. Capps is returning from Tommy John surgery he underwent March 8, He's scheduled to pitch an inning. 16

Speed bump for Baumann Left-handed reliever Buddy Baumann is making a slow recovery from a sore shoulder that put him on the disabled list to start the season. "Slow sledding for Buddy," Green said. "He's started to throw, but very lightly. He was throwing 30-foot rainbow throws and didn't feel perfect. So we're hopeful he gets back. He had an outstanding Spring Training. He threw the ball very well for us. I was excited about factoring him into our bullpen. But he'll be a depth guy at some point in time when he gets back." Myers hits for cycle as Padres defeat Rockies BY: STAFF REPORT Reuters DENVER -- The instant San Diego Padres first baseman Wil Myers made contact in the eighth inning Monday night, he was thinking one thing: triple. He stumbled rounding second but reached third easily to complete the second cycle in franchise history and the first of his career as the Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3. "As soon as I hit it, I knew the triple was a possibility," Myers said, "so that was what I was trying to do. "I almost fell. I was trying too hard, I think. If I'd have fallen, I'd still have tried for it." Myers drove an 0-2 slider from Carlos Estevez into the gap in left-center, the deepest spot in Coors Field. The ball shot past left fielder Gerardo Parra, causing Padres manager Andy Green to get animated in dugout. "I was screaming 'three,'" Green said. "I usually don't get into it that much. I usually try to be as even-keeled as I can, but you don't see cycles very often." The other Padres cycle was also accomplished at Coors Field, by Matt Kemp on Aug. 14, Myers' cycle was the eighth by a Rockies opponent at Coors Field and the 15th there overall. Before his triple gave him a career-high-tying four hits, Myers singled in the first, doubled home a run in the third and homered in a three-run sixth that put the Padres ahead 4-0. Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run homer for the Padres, who got a superb spot start by Jarred Cosart followed by fine relief work as they evened their record at 4-4 with their third win in the past four games. The Rockies (5-3) have lost two straight. 17

Trevor Cahill was scheduled to start for San Diego but was placed on the 10-day disabled list Sunday due to a back strain. So the Padres turned to Cosart, who had made one 26-pitch relief appearance this season and had not pitched in five days. He held the Rockies scoreless for four innings and threw 70 pitches. Cosart got the Rockies to ground into three double plays, including one in the first inning when he gave up three singles but stranded runners at first and second by getting Parra to ground out. "Nerves early," Cosart said. "I'm just trying to feel my way through instead of just trying to execute the pitches and execute the scouting report. Then the third and fourth, I felt like that's where I'd like to be for the rest of the year." Tyler Chatwood (0-2) held the Padres to one run through five innings but yielded two homers and was knocked out in the sixth. Myers lofted his third homer to right-center on an 0-2 fastball to open the inning. Chatwood walked Ryan Schimpf with one out, and Renfroe followed with a first-pitch homer, his third of the season, to put the Padres ahead 4-0. "Didn't get it up enough," Chatwood said of the fastball to Myers, "and he barreled it. Then I tried to throw a sinker in and didn't get it in to Renfroe and he barreled it to right." Chatwood has allowed four homers in 11 1/3 innings in his two 2017 starts. He yielded four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings Monday. The Rockies made it 4-1 when DJ LeMahieu hit his first homer, an opposite-field shot to right in the sixth off Jose Torres. Mark Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the ninth off Brandon Maurer, the sixth Padres pitcher. Miguel Diaz (1-0), who followed Cosart to the mound, earned his first major league win in his second appearance in the big leagues. He threw one shutout inning. Myers' triple quickly led to the final Padres run when Yangervis Solarte followed with a sacrifice fly. Myers, who signed a six-year, $83 million contract in January, said he had been a triple shy of the cycle three times and had never accomplished the feat at any level, including his amateur days. "Those moments don't happen very often on a baseball field," Green said. "To see somebody get it, kind of the cornerstone of your franchise now, too, it was a lot of fun to watch." NOTES: Rockies RHP Chad Qualls (right forearm tightness) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Albuquerque and pitch one inning at Reno and do the same thing Thursday.... Rockies 3B Nolan Arenado has hit safely in each of the team's eight games.... Rockies OF David Dahl (stress reaction rib) will join the team in San Francisco this weekend to be re-evaluated by the training staff. Dahl is getting treatment at the Rockies' complex in 18

Scottsdale, Ariz.... Padres C Luis Torrens made his first major league start and went 0-for-2 with a walk after appearing in two games as a defensive replacement.... Padres RHP Carter Capps (right elbow) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with high Class A Lake Elsinore and pitch one inning as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery performed on March 8, Padres rookie CF Manuel Margot has hit safely in six of eight games and reached base safely in all but one. Wil Myers hits for cycle in Padres win BY: JACOB ROTH Fox 5 DENVER Wil Myers smashed his way into the Padres record books Monday night, hitting for the second cycle in club history as the Friars beat the Colorado Rockies 5-3 at Coors Field. Myers started the night off with a single in the first inning. Then in the third, he added a double that scored Manuel Margot to give San Diego a 1-0 lead. Three innings later, Myers hit a solo home run to right field, doubling the Padres lead. Rookie outfielder Hunter Renfroe followed that up with a two-run homer to push the lead to 4-0. The historic moment came in the eighth; with the Padres leading 4-1 and Myers facing an 0-2 count, the All-Star first baseman blasted the ball into the gap in left center field. He nearly stumbled sprinting around second base but easily made it to third to complete the cycle. Coincidentally, the only other cycle in Padres history also happened at Coors Field. On August 14, 2015, former Friar Matt Kemp hit a homer, a single, a double and then a triple in a 9-5 San Diego win. With Monday s win the Padres improved to 4-4 on the season. Myers Hits For Cycle in Padres Win BY: BEN ROSEHART NBC 7 Matt Kemp is no longer the only answer to the question: Who has hit for the cycle in a Padres uniform? 19

Wil Myers earned the second spot in that illustrious club Monday in Denver as the All-Star helped San Diego earn a 5-3 victory over the Rockies. Myers singled in the 1st inning off of Colorado starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood. Then in his second at-bat, the first baseman doubled and plated rookie Manny Margot to give the Padres a 1-0 lead in the 3rd. When Myers led off the 6th inning, he sent an 0-2 fastball from Chatwood over the right-field fence. That put Myers just a triple away from completing the cycle. Carlos Estevez relieved Chatwood but did not have any success retiring the Padres slugger when he came up again in the 8th inning. Myers quickly poked a base knock into the gap in left-center. As the ball rolled towards the warning track, he hustled around the infield dirt and after a brief stumble around second, he wound up with a stand-up triple for the second cycle in the history of the San Diego Padres. Ironically, Myers saw Kemp accomplish the same feat in person on August 14, 2015 in the same city. Kemp collected a single, double, triple, and homer at Coors Field during Myers first season with the Friars. Hunter Renfroe also smacked a 2-run home run in the 6th inning. The blast by the rookie rightfielder made it 4-0 Padres and was more than enough for the bullpen to close it out. Jarred Cosart pitched four shutout innings for the Friars in a spot start for Vista native Trevor Cahill. Cahill was placed on the 10-day disabled list over the weekend with a lower back strain but manager Andy Green said Sunday that he plans to have Cahill back on the mound when his spot comes back around in the rotation. Former Padres manager and current Rockies skipper Buddy Black complimented Myers after the game saying, His strength is his ability to hit the ball to all fields, and he s realizing that potential. It s hard to believe that in 20 seasons in San Diego, Tony Gwynn never hit for the cycle despite a.338 career batting average. We can probably all agree that if Mr. Padre was still with us, he would have been very proud of Myers after the show he put on Monday night in a winning effort. 20
