Just two weeks ago, Beloit went into Ashford University Field and took three of four from the LumberKings. Clinton comes off of a series loss to Kane County, and sits a season high nine games back of the Cougars, but just 1.5 games behind Peoria for the Wild Card. Both teams will send #1 starters to the hill in the opener, as Kyle Finnegan goes for Beloit, and Edwin Diaz goes for Clinton. First pitch is set for 6:30. Extra, Extra, Read all about it!...the May 19 th issue of Sports Illustrated hit store shelves last week, and the LumberKings historic win last week in Burlington earned a four-page spread. April Review It was an up-and-down April for Clinton. Cold, rainy weather caused five rainouts, three of which resulted in doubleheaders. The L Kings opened the 2014 season with a four-game set in Cedar Rapids and split those contests. Clinton returned home where they won three of five, two over Lake County and one over Fort Wayne. Following that home stand, Clinton hit the road for six games against MWL Eastern Division teams. They were swept by the current MWL Eastern leading Dayton Dragons in three games, but returned the favor against the Bowling Green Hot Rods, earning their first 2014 sweep. The L Kings returned home for six games against Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids and did not fare well. They went 1-5 and were swept by the Kernels. After consecutive rainouts in Quad Cities, Clinton wrapped up April with a doubleheader split against the River Bandits on April 30. Marcus Littlewood raked to the tune of a.379 batting average, the highest mark in the MWL through one month. Mother Nature wreaks havoc yet again For the second time in just over two weeks, mid-game rain caused a LumberKings matchup to be suspended, this time vs. Wisconsin on Monday afternoon. Already with six rainouts at home to go along with the two suspended games, Clinton has lost two games in the first half and will play only 68. They Returned Five players who donned a LumberKings uniform at some point in 2013 are back with the team. They include catcher Marcus Littlewood, infielders Martin Peguero and Zach Shank, and pitchers Blake Holovach and Mark Bordonaro. Littlewood, Holovach, and Bordonaro spent their entire 2013 campaigns in Clinton. Bordonaro was promoted to High Desert (Advanced-A) at the end of April. Midwest League Debut 26 LumberKings have made their Midwest League debut, the most recent being outfielder Chantz Mack, who homered to tie the game vs. Burlington which eventually led to the LumberKings first walk-off win of Mariners Watch Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez each homered as Detroit powered it s way to a 6-3 victory over Seattle. Hisashi Iwahuma allowed five runs and eight hits over six frames, as he picked up his second loss of the season. Justin Verlander cruised through much of the game, as he picked up with win. Detroit jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Cabrera s 9 th home run of the season in the third, but Kyle Seager tied it up with his eighth of the year in the fourth. Victor Martinez then launched his 13 th of the season, a three run blast off Iwakuma in the fifth that made it 5-2. Rajai Davis added a solo HR in the seventh that put the game out of reach. Seattle is now two games under.500 (26-28) and just at Safeco Field. They look to even up the series Saturday night, as Chris Young (4-2) will oppose Drew Smyly (2-3). First pitch in Seattle is scheduled for 9:10 CT. All-Time Wins List as Clinton Manager 1. Jack Mull 300 (1991 Champions) 2. Diaz was a 3 rd round selection by the Seattle Mariners in the 2012 June draft from the Caguas Military Academy in Caguas, Puerto Rico. Last Outing: Diaz started vs. Wisconsin, and made it through three innings before the game was suspended due to inclement weather. He gave up six hits in just three frames, but took a no decision. Clinton fell to just 5-5 in Diaz 10 starts this season. Recently, he has focused much more on pitching to contact, as he has just three strikeouts in his past 10 innings. He struck out only one vs. Peoria, and two in the shortened start vs. the Timber Rattlers.
