Eastern League MVP Brock Stassi collected four RBI, highlighted by a gamesealing three-run homer in the fifth inning. Tyler Pill was roughed up for 13 hits and seven runs over five innings in the loss. Zach Eflin went seven innings to earn the win. Vince Belnome launched a homer in the second inning. BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Robert Gsellman takes the mound for his first postseason start with the B-Mets. The righty split the regular season between St. Lucie (High-A) and Binghamton, going 13-7 with a 2.89 ERA across both levels. After joining the B-Mets in late May, the SoCal native went 7-7 with a 3.51 ERA in 16 Double-A starts. Gsellman faced the Fightins in his second start with Binghamton on June 6. He went six innings in a loss. READING STARTER: RHP Jake Thompson takes the hill in the playoffs after going 5-1 with a 1.80 ERA in seven starts with Reading. Thompson was traded from the Rangers to the Phillies along with five players for Cole Hamels on July 31 this year. The righty had been pitching for Frisco (TEX: AA) prior to the trade. He went a combined 11-7 with a 3.73 ERA between both teams. Thompson lost his lone career postseason start with Frisco in the Texas League playoffs last year. GSELLMAN IN THE POSTSEASON: Robert Gsellman is set to make his second career postseason start. With Savannah (Low-A) last year, he started Game 1 of the SAL Divisional Round against Asheville. He allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings in the loss. Savannah was swept in the best-of-three series. TIME TO BOUNCE BACK: The Binghamton Mets have not won a playoff series after losing Game 1 since Binghamton fell in Game 1 of the ELCS to the Harrisburg Senators, 5-4. The next night, Bill Pulsipher threw the first nohitter in franchise history in a 2-0 victory. Binghamton rattled off two more wins to earn their second league title. OUT WEST: In the Western Division Championship Series opener, the Curve stormed back from a seven-run deficit to shock the Baysox, 8-7, on Wednesday night in Altoona. Austin Meadows belted a game-tying homer in the ninth and Jacob Stallings delivered a walk-off single to give Altoona a 1-0 series lead. GAME 1 LOSS: Last night marked the first time the B-Mets have ever lost a playoff series opener at home. Belnome hit two homers in the regular season between Binghamton and Durham (TB: AAA). DOUBLE-A RINGS: Eight active B-Mets won the Eastern League title last season with Binghamton. Josh Rodriguez won the EL championship with Akron (CLE) in Vince Belnome took home the Texas League title in 2011 with San Antonio (SD). Joe Benson won a Southern League ring with Jacksonville (MIA) last year. GAME 2 FORTUNES: The B-Mets are 3-8 all-time in Game 2 s. Binghamton had suffered six consecutive losses in Game 2 s spanning eight years before beating the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 5-1, in Game 2 of the 2014 Eastern League Championship Series. 3 Binghamton Mets Postseason Guide B-Mets Postseason Notes EASTERN LEAGUE TITLES: Binghamton, NY has been home to 13 Eastern League champions. The Binghamton Triplets won 10 league titles as a Yankees affiliate. The Binghamton Mets won the championship in 1992, 1994 and DEFENDING CHAMPIONS: The Binghamton Mets swept the Richmond Flying Squirrels in three games in 2014 to capture their third Eastern League title in franchise history and first since The B-Mets look to become the first team to win back-to-back championships since the Trenton Thunder claimed the hardware in 2007 and BACK TO THE PROMISED LAND: The B-Mets are in the postseason for the third straight season. It is the first time in franchise history Binghamton has garnered three consecutive playoffs berths. Prior to 2014, the B-Mets had never made the playoffs in back-to-back years in franchise history. A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING: The B-Mets are playing the Reading Fightin Phils in the postseason for the first time in franchise history. The B- Mets have also never played the two Western Division playoff teams, Bowie and Altoona, in the playoffs. LOPEZ IN THE PLAYOFFS: Pedro Lopez is in the postseason for the third time as manager of the B-Mets. It marks the sixth time he has made the playoffs as a manger in the Mets organization. He won his first championship as a manager in affiliated baseball with Binghamton in Lopez won a Puerto Rican Winter League title with Caguas in Winter RELIVING 2014: The B-Mets ended a 20-year title drought in the Southern Tier in After limping into the postseason on a six-game losing streak, the B-Mets stunned the Portland Sea Dogs in the EDCS in five games, taking the final two games of the series at Hadlock Field. After grabbing the first two games in Richmond, the B-Mets clinched in front of 5,904 at NYSEG Stadium on September 12, A GAME TO REMEMBER: In Game 3 of the 2014 ELCS B-Mets starter Steven Matz struck out 11 and carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning. In the ninth, Jayce Boyd laced a walk-off double into the right-field gap, plating Gavin Cecchini from second base with the championshipclinching run. POSTSEASON MAGIC: B-Mets starter Bill Pulsipher threw the first no-hitter in franchise history in the postseason. On September 12, 1994, the lefthander tossed a no-no against the Harrisburg Senators in Game 2 of the Eastern League Championship Series. It was Binghamton s first win of the series. They would go on to win in four games. CELEBRATING AT HOME: The B-Mets have won the clinching game of all three of championships at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton hit.282 as a team and compiled a 5.16 staff ERA. The B-Mets and Fightins split a four-game series last week. GOING TO EXTREMES: The season series was marked by two blowouts and three nailbiters. Reading scorched Binghamton, 14-5, on June 6, but the B-Mets returned the favor with a 16-4 drubbing on September 2. Three games were decided by one run. REGULAR SEASON DIVISION CHAMPS: The Fightin Phils clinched their first regular season division championship with a record. It s the first time they ve won a division since Reading is looking to become the first regular season division title winner to take home the Eastern League crown since Akron went to grab the Western Division and beat Bowie and Trenton in the postseason that year. POSTSEASON DROUGHT: Reading has made the playoffs six times since 2000, but hasn t won a postseason series since 2001 when they beat Erie in the South Division Championship Series. Reading has lost three straight playoffs series ( 12, 11 & 09). BIDDING FOR THE CROWN: Since their inception in 1967, Reading has won three Eastern League Championships. They took home the hardware in 1968, 1973 and The were named co-champions with New Britain in MANAGER MATCHUPS: B-Mets manager Pedro Lopez and Fightins skipper Dusty Wathan are each in their fourth year with their respective teams. This season marks Wathan s second trip to the playoffs with Reading. Both were catchers in their playing days. GRAB A BAT: With two National League-affiliated teams meeting in the Division Series, pitchers will hit for themselves and no designated hitter will be used.
